Alan, your banter and comments as you paint are an endearing quality...makes us feel like we are in the company of not only a teacher but a friend. At 70, I tell my wife..."We are getting along in years dear...Who knows for whom the. bell tolls, or when...the dishes can wait a little longer can they not?"
Hi Alan, I'm one of those fans that really enjoy your pen and wash videos. This is another good one! I so enjoy watching your sure strokes and paint mixing. Yay, Alan!
What a gloriously charming scene Alan, I love the addition of the old weather worn posts in the foreground a poignant reminder that in days gone by they supported a lovely old wooden gate, perhaps an entrance to a field where cattle once roamed.....for a few brief minutes I have escaped the worry of David having his first chemotherapy tomorrow..X
I just love everything about your videos, the sound of the rain on the roof, your wonderful clock, but most of all your lovely accent, I come from Oldham, so fully understand all, good luck and Thank you
i drew this with a cheap knib pen dipped in black acrylic ink ,and finished it of with a fine brush and black ink if you have no ink ,,,place some black acrylic in a bottle.or a tin lid,, add a little water and shake well .
Yes Ruth .you can sketch in pencil first if you like ,and line over with black.acrylic..when you get more profficient you will be able to do it free hand ,try something very simple at first
a dipp pen (old pen with knib) and then with a reservoir brush ,, that is a brush with a thin sable in the centre surrounded with squirrel hair ,, good to paint twigs and fine lines ,,
when I was younger my pet hate was going to a group when an artist was engaged .and seeing everyone with their heads down gripping their brushes,, and all I could hear was shush shush ,and the artist with a photograph pinned to his board grinding along admiring his work ,not telling anyone what he was doing or colours he was using ,-------- now ,,, oh where has that fire in me gone ,,,now I don't care about out,, I am a sloth ,,, I turn DEAF when my wife shouts ""ALAN YOU HAVE NOT WASHED THE DISHES YET",,,,,,, and other things I darn,t repeat,
Marvelous ... with a sure hand and a dip pen... no pencil sketch to help you along... gotta love it...
Beautiful Alan, these are some of my favourite buildings that I have seen you do, I want to live in one of those tumbledown cottages xx

hi Glenise
Merci beaucoup pour vos vidéos si enrichissantes
Just great Alan, what’s the name of the pen you are using to make the drawing. I love this kind of watercolour.
I use an ordinary ink pen with sketcher ink or acrylic ink or fountain pen
"just make them up", what a mind you have. no pencil marks, ink only and you cannot erase that stuff. if i only had 10% of your experience, talent.
thanks, Alan for the detailed explanation
Another great painting Alan, thanks. What is the brand of the reservoir liner brush you use for the tree branches and such and where can I get one?

Hello Alan. Thanks for your great videos. Quick question. What is that you are using to sketch the image first. Thanks from Ireland.
a dipp pen (old pen with knib) and then with a reservoir brush ,, that is a brush with a thin sable in the centre surrounded with squirrel hair ,, good to paint twigs and fine lines ,,
Thank you Alan.
Fun! It really "pops to life" when you do your shadows and dark bits.

Oh, I meant to say, the ladder and water barrel were great touches to bring your scene to life.
when I was younger my pet hate was going to a group when an artist was engaged .and seeing everyone with their heads down gripping their brushes,, and all I could hear was shush shush ,and the artist with a photograph pinned to his board grinding along admiring his work ,not telling anyone what he was doing or colours he was using ,--------
now ,,, oh where has that fire in me gone ,,,now I don't care about out,, I am a sloth ,,, I turn DEAF when my wife shouts ""ALAN YOU HAVE NOT WASHED THE DISHES YET",,,,,,, and other things I darn,t repeat,
Good energy flowing today. Looks sharp for me. Thanks for this great lesson.
