    It's all about feel and not about finger size. I have short fingers and wear cadet size gloves and hate standard size grips. Been using mid-size Crossline grips for decades. Very comfortable and allows me to hold the club with light grip pressure and swing freely.

    Just seeing this video now. Very well done. Another factor to consider is how swing weight may change as you go up or down in grip size depending of course on the manufacturer and the materials used. Rubber grips are heavier and progress up as size goes up whereas composite type grips like Winn or jumbo Max the weight can actually stay pretty consistent not affecting swing weight at all. Keep up the good work 🏌🏻‍♂️

    Thanks for the vid! Myself I notice that the larger grips help me feel the angle of the club at impact, I am more conscious of the rotation of the clubface and more likely to square-up at impact.

    When you were explaining the relationship between the face angle and path, it would be great to see a visual, whether a graphic or just a side-by-side video (top view and side view) of a swing to illustrate how important that relationship is. For a lot of us weekend hackers, I think that data could be lost on us without seeing it in action lol.

    Great video. Most RUclips pros neglect to talk about swingweight when doing these types of videos. Kudos to you for bringing that up. One other factor to consider is the weight of the shaft in the club. 120 gram steel shafts can absorb the extra weight put on the end much easier than 50-65 gram shafts will. I'm 6'2", started playing in the early 80's and always lengthened my steel shaft irons 1" with extra layers of tape to build up the grips (large hands). Recently I retired and decided to take up golf again. I bought 4 TaylorMade FCT (White Head) Rescues with 65 gram Aldila RIP shafts and put JUMBO grips on all 4. They were erratic & unusable for me (I discovered that I CANNOT deliver an accurate swing with weights in the mid c's and lower. The bottom of the swing arc is different EVERY TIME, side to side AND front to back). I then bought the IDENTICLE HEAD clubs with the 85 gram Aldila RIP TP shafts and installed the jumbo grips. Problem solved. (I needed the heavier shafts to begin with in the clubs to minimize the effect of changing the grips. And yeah, I now own a swingweight scale).

    I've changed all my grips except my hybrid to oversized +1/8 and it's been a great thing for me. More comfortable and my misses are tighter. My hybrid I just haven't got around to doing it yet and that is the only club I struggled with a bad hook miss. I didn't even know the theory behind smaller grips having a left miss but makes sense. I just did it for comfort.

    To me it makes more sense to look at standard deviation for the off-line column because if you look at the average then if you hit 1 100 yards left and the next 100 yards right then the average is 0 yards off-line but the 2 balls are 200 yards apart.

    Senior golfer, hand/finger arthritis…..I moved to the same jumbo grip used by Bryson on my driver. I remarkably forces me to loosen my death grip, it is more cushion, and my hands hurt less. Other than my slices still…I do get longer drives, and hit a bit more to the left or straight now. Overall I am pleased. Same w Fatso grips on my wedge or heavier putters…calms my grip.

      exactly the same with me. For my constantly sore hands, the jumbo grips are so much more comfortable for me. And I also am able to grip it more lightly, which allows the clubhead to square up better and with a little higher swing speed. And even though I didn't change the grip on my putter, I find that I'm gripping that club looser too, and my putting has improved. Worth at least a couple of strokes in my case.

    I bought a used club a couple years ago that had a jumbo grip on it. Loved it immediately, and went on to change the grips on my whole set. I did a fitting with regular grips and it was weird. Felt like holding onto a drinking straw. With the jumbos, I feel like minor rotations in my wrists and hands are minimized, and I stay on target better.

    Much of getting fitted correctly for grips has to do with feel as much as it has to do with hand size and finger-length.
    I use Golf Pride mid-size MCC+4 grips and can't imagine trying to swing a club now with those slim cheap tapered stock grips that clubs typically come with off the shelf.
    One must always use what works best for their hands.
    Grips that are too big will become easily noticeable to the player after a few shots at the range or in a simulator, and the same will apply for grips that are too thin.
    Thin grips will usually result in the player having to death-grip the club much harder, which will often result in wild hooks.
    Grips that are too thick will often result in the face of the club being left slightly open at impact, which will often result in slices.
    There is also no rule against using different grips for different types of clubs, which is more common than many would otherwise believe.

      Great way of putting it. My hand size is borderline between standard and midsize and I’ve always played standard since starting until recently I changed to midsize. I have noticed I don’t grip the club half as tight as I used to or hit crazy hooks. I now hit nice baby draws which I am absolutely loving.

    Enjoy your test and fitting videos. I have looked, but I may have missed a fitting for someone similar to my situation, I'm 78, my handicap goes from barely into single digits (9.7) to highs around 12 (12.3). My driver (44.75 shaft) swing speed is low to mid 80s, (83-85 with a rare one up to 87). You guys ever record a fitting for an old guy like me? If not, it would be interesting and I'll bet you have more than a few viewers in this general category. Thank you for your work!

    Agree, correct grip followed by comfort and familiarity with the grip size will breed confidence. One point I would make is regarding glove size being a potential guide to grip size; I have found the gloves size is dependent on the brand and composition of the glove (leather v mixed leather material v all weather man made).

I recently switched from Golf Pride Standard Size Z Grip Chevron Soft Black (50g) to Winn Dritac 2.0 Midsize Swing Grip (54g) and I am no longer hearing the sweat sound I used to hear when I hit the center of the club face. For me, it all comes down to feel. The feel relates to confidence, just the same as looks do. But it also relates to repeatability and fatigue. The only way a person will truly know how a change will affect them is a large sample size (like playing several rounds or range sessions). That's one reason that a good club fitter has a guarantee that if you're not happy after a certain time period you can return a club and they will try to make it right.

I don’t choose for the rotation reasons, simply it feels more comfortable in my hand…

    I went to jumbomax grips, the XS size, and really loved how they felt. The problem I didn’t think of was, they really threw off my swing weights as they were twice the weight of a regular grip. If I had went with the lightweight version, I would have been fine. Now playing Winn Dry-Tac LT midsize. I wear a medium glove.

However, I do feel that when I have probably the correct grip pressure, that I'm less in control of the clubhead. Currently have standard grip with 3 layers of tape. Might a midsize grip offer me more feeling of clubhead control?

    Feel is key but bigger grips are definitely more forgiving and offer more control, like wider tires on a sports car. I recommend a midweight jumbo grip for most guys and light-midweight midsize grip for most gals.

    I went from STD to MID in my woods at the start of last year. The intent was to calm down my draw/hook tendency and it worked. A few months later I regripped my irons from STD to MID and they felt odd to start but it did take way the draw/hook tendency. If I had done more range time after the regrip it would have transitioned easier. In the end, they feel great for me and I'm keeping the flight straighter. I still snap a few every now and then. The only clubs still STD are my wedges so that they have more feel and can be opened/closed and flipped/flatted as needed. I'm a Cadet M-L glove sized hand. The wedges have Lamkin 1130s for the more barreled longer grips. For someone that slices the ball I would suggest a thinner grip so that they can get the hands moving through the zone easier to turn the club over and to also strenghten their grip. It gives a change to get the grip more into the fingers easier.

    • @sumsar0125
      @sumsar0125 4 месяца назад +1

      I would counter this and say that a skinny grip makes me clasp on much harder which in effect tightens the wrists and hinders the release. It also causes fatigue and pain as was explained in the video.
      The data showed negligible differences in release/delivery and I personally think you should go by feel/comfortability.
      Just my five cents.

    • @epgolfstudios
      @epgolfstudios  7 месяцев назад +3

      My advice when it comes to grip size it always comfort. Just have to feel comfortable with how it sits in your hands. It's all well saying let's try and put on a big grip to take your hands out of it (which in my opinion rarely works anyway) but if you don't like how the size feels it will negatively impact your game. So always be cautious of that. And swing weight wise again it depends on the player, but if your miss is left the yes you may benefit from adding some lead tape to the head. But I'd maybe suggest start off getting one club regripped and test that out for a few range sessions as see if you like the size. If you decide to change them all then have a couple rounds without any extra lead tape. Then if the miss is more left and can't feel the head they try adding 4gs of lead tape to the club head. If it continues then keep adding 2gs at a time until the weight feels good and miss is better 👍

    Excellent video, I have always played standard grips even though they appear slightly small on my hands, last year I changed to a MCC PLUS4 Align (standard) and the thicker lower hand feels so much better although the grips still appear slightly small on my gloved hand, so should I try 2 or 3 layers of tape with my current standard grips or try the midsize which is a massive 14 grams heavier and I do not fancy having the swingweights on all my clubs messed up.

    • @petrotmyrcz308
      @petrotmyrcz308 4 месяца назад

      Hi Scott. Some will suggest, and it works for me, this "rule of thumb". Using the glove hand, grip the club as you normally would. If your longest fingers don't reach the meat of your thumb, the grip is too large. If they dig in, the grip is too small. You want the fingers to just be touching the palm. Try that first. If you have a Dicks Sports nearby, they will have different size grip samples attached to shafts which you can try out. They will help you with the fitting. Layers of tape under the glove hand would definitely be better than going to that hefty midsize.

  • @kenshinwarriorX

    In my opinion if a bigger grip gives you the right grip pressure that’s the main concern. I’ve had standard grips for years and gripped to tight. I now lighten my grip each shot and it’s changed my game. I will be changing to midsize soon.

    Grips are an individual thing. I use midsize for two reasons. One, arthritis in my hands makes it easier to hold them. Next, I know I can hit it straighter. Right or wrong, I have tried all the way from regular to jumbo. Settled on midsize and never deviated.

    Your assistance will be very much appreciated

    • @epgolfstudios
      @epgolfstudios  Год назад +1

      I haven't built one in a while but from memory the 790 2 iron was taper tip, and the hybrid shaft will be .370. So you could get it to fit but would need to possibly ream out the hosel. Regarding swing weight that wouldn't be an issue as the head is designed to play the standard length that you would cut it too. And flex wouldn't be too much of an issue either as you could tip it depending on how you wanted it to play. If it's already in a hybrid it likely will already have been tipped some amount, depending on what hybrid it's in. There are a lot of variables here. Too many to say on here. It could be done yes but you would need to take it to someone who knows what they are doing and tell them how you want it to play.

    I am sure if you go from a small grip to a large grip there is going to be a difference. Also depends on the club how much effect it has. I know I put a Large Grip on my Putter and hated it because lost all feel. But for a Driver it might help absorb impact for those who have sensitive hands..

    • @epgolfstudios
      @epgolfstudios  Год назад

      Yes David there are so many variables you could talk about them all day. But the reality is everyone is different and everyone reacts differently, so you really have to test them yourself. And yes impact absorption is also a good point and ties in with grip material and pressure.

      Very good point Tim and you're right, comfort does come from familiarity for sure. But I have also had it many times where a grip size change has instantly felt better and performed better for players that have never played that grip size. So of course it's going to depend on the individual. If there is a case where we think changing grip size for technical or data reasons seems like a good idea but they player feels more comfortable on their original size then really I would leave that call down to the player. I can only advise on what I think would be better in any given situation. It might be they try and trial the grip for a while on an old club and see how it feels after practising with it for a few weeks. But as with anything in fitting it's just about trying to make the best call we can for that player.

    For me personally, if I don't have a larger grip on my woods I find I go left A LOT. I'm a right handed player.

    there are so many different gripweight out there, so why don´t you seek same weight of grips, if you try to have a talk about gripsize.... ex winn dritak Jumbo is about 50 gr, and if you take the lite version it`s under 40 gr in jumboversion, just for the comparison !!

    Larger grips should intrinsically increase sensitivity to face angle changes and allow finer adjustments. That's the biggest advantage of larger grips is their greater directional control.

      Certainly for some, but that wouldn't be the same for every golfer out there

      @@epgolfstudios it's simple math larger diameters allow finer adjustments. Individual performance is a function of more variables.

    The bottom line with these swing tests is that every grip got you on or near the green. There’s not a grip in existence that would do that for my game. Lol.

    Is it not true that the larger the grip for average size hands the less the wrist rotation?

    Most amateurs could benefit from a lighter swing weight, even single figure handicappers. So I wouldn't be to concerned about swing weight and offsetting the head with a heavier jumbo grip.

      @@epgolfstudios yeah, it always struck me as strange that clubs off the rack - even game improvement clubs are sold with the same swing weight as tour pros - what the hell? and most clubfitters build every iron set up around d3. you wouldnt dream of putting a blade with tour stiff shafts in an amateurs hands, why swingweight? ive jumbo grips with extra tape, i reckon the grip weights 90g +, love it!

      In all fairness my miss is low, however a good strike is 3rd to 4th groove so on quad that'd like 8 - 10mm low on the face so a perfect strike looks thin anything lower then like 12mm would be thin

      Same as anything when it comes to equipment, everyone will find slightly different results. But the idea that a bigger grip will help you stop you turning your hands over and prevent the left miss is mostly a myth in my opinion. But can have benefits elsewhere for the right person.

      @@epgolfstudios I think there is something to be said for getting a grip that fits your hands. Grip diameters have been the same forever and there are simply more bigger, taller people then there were 50 years ago. And having a grip that is too small could cause you problems.

      In some cases I do yes, it depends what I am testing. In this test I didn't take out any bad shots (only ones that exceeded the swing speed that I was trying to achieve). However if I was texting a club or shaft I would take out any very bad shots because I am trying to see how the club performs, not how well I perform.

    Once again a whole lot of golf comes down to individual feel comfort and looks. I personally am very visual. If I look down and don’t like the top line, or a meeting of crown to face or the look of the shaft I don’t care how good it may be I won’t hit it well because it doesn’t fit my eye.
