  • This is my solution for a Lipo Bonker to avoid having a fire in my appartment in case of a problem.
    I wanted something portable, that I can bring in my car, safe, without any flames and having the possibility to charge my batteries.
    I tested it by catching on fire a 3S battery.
    The box weight 27 pounds.

    Great idea and a good job showing how you made your bunker and how you tested it. I'll be making mine just like yours.

    Thanks for sharing and showing how it should be done. I've used steel casette for money and lipo pouches inside about 10years ago and it was always my concern, that in an extreme case with fire shooting off the battery, the temperature might get transferred through the steel and spread onto furniture or wooden/rubber floor or car interior. I also had some kind of fireproof 0,5cm thick fabric to put either under the pouches or under that cassette. But I was still concerned. This is super well made. Today a good idea would also be to buy a smoke/fire detector with sim card support and smartphone alert to be always next to or mounted on the lid of the cassette, so when we are away, it can let us know that something is going on.

    Good project I’m gathering information from RUclips and started buying parts for ebike battery and my RC drone . Bought 21” Harbur freight metal tool box lining with 1/4” cement board . After batteries in box lying top bags of sand to smother fire if any . Also important to have vent hole so no pressure build up .

    love the sand idea, seem to work pretty good in combination with the drywall separators since the paper in the adjecent slots did not catch fire
    I bought some new lipos for my rc car and got a new 4-channel charger (Hota F6+) with storage mode so I can take better care of my batteries....all my old ones are puffed to like 150% their original thickness ;o]
    I plan to order a metal box for storage (now I store in lipo bags alone) and one to covert to a dedicated charging box like you have where I can charge 8 batteries at once (both my rc cars use two 3s batteries that I charge as 6s to balance all 6 cells to same level)

    Instead of sand I would use glass bubbles you can buy for lipos. They are said to melt on the burning lipos and seal them from air, quenching the flames. I’m freaked out by the same situation. Only have my apartment, no garage.

    Maybe, if you stretched a rubber membrane over the bottom of the tray and filled it with sand. Then when the rubber melts it will 'pop' like a balloon and release all the sand quickly.

    • @TOUTest1
      @TOUTest1  4 года назад +1

      First I think it will be complicated to have a plastic solid enough and able to pop. Secondly If the sand fall all at once everywhere it will put less sand on the battery on fire.

    Hi, is there any alternative stuff to replace drywall? Its not available in my country. Also, I hv a suggestion, if u could attach the sandbag to the box lid, charging would be much easier

    • @TOUTest1
      @TOUTest1  6 лет назад +1

      I just tried and the box is unbalance and fall back if I put weight in the lid. You could put sandbags at the bottom of the box to dissipate heat. If the sandbags on top melt well, maybe 3/4 inch wood planks could be use to isolate the batteries from each other. This also can be use for the bottom. You could use ceramic floor tiles, chlaks.. Note that I did not tested all those alternatives.

      drywall not available? Dude, this material is in every country. He is referring to gypsum. It's on your wall and ceiling. Super cheap from the market.

    if you are just putting them in a vacuum sealed bag it CANT GO WRONG (cuz fire wont burn if you have no oxygen )
    or put the exaust pipe into a box with the batteries as CO2 is supposed to take out fire i think that what they said at my 10 minute fire training session to use co2 extinguishers

    • @TOUTest1
      @TOUTest1  3 года назад +5

      I think that lipos do not need external Oxygen to burn. Also, if the battery begin to burn it will melt the bag... Exhaust pipe of what ?

    The plastic puts off a caustic smoke and is dangerous to breathe. Try a thin sheet of paper that you can cover with dry sand. It will burn through fast and pour onto the batteries.

    • @TOUTest1
      @TOUTest1  4 года назад +3

      The paper will burn slower than the plastic if thick enough not to brake by itself. Also, some plastic burning compare to a LiPo battery.. Also, I cannot contain the sand with paper only.

      I don't understand what you just said.
      Why 220v ? Outside of what ? Seal what ? Why would this prevent my battery to catch on fire ?

    • @SkyGamer911
      @SkyGamer911 3 года назад

      @@TOUTest1 I assume the lipo need to be exposed to the air or at least fire need O2 to actually burn (so if you were to put a glass over a candle, assuming that it was sealed, it would not burn. In the same way I Assume lipos will burn if they do. And hence sealing the box itself, having a 220V plug (like those 220v plugs on Xbox, pc, ps3) on the outside that goes to a charger or whatever you use inside to charge them it will be sealed and airless if you somehow remove the air. Did that make sense for you?
