    I bought a 6 gal metal trashcan with a lid. The handle locks the lid in place. Drilled a couple of holes on the lid and placed the lipo bags inside with one battery per bag.

    It has been my understanding that with Ammo Box you drill SIX (6) holes each at 5/16 diameter in the lid. Even then the tests have proven you STILL need to remove the rubber seal all the way around that lid in ADDITION to all those 6 holes drilled. There are video tests of it VS 5 OTHER tests to compare results too. I did not want to post the link to that other website here since I felt it NOT at all polite to do so. But the tests done with that gasket in place were pretty terrifying! I sure got MY 5/16 drill out in a hurry:-) and while it bummed me out to remove that shiny bran new seal all the way around, I did it after watching that video! I'm old, been wounded 4 times in War and have NO desire at all to get my old self blown up any more!

      Mike Cartwright. Thanks for adding to the conversation. A lot of techniques out there. Another variable to consider is the size and/or number of batteries in the box.

      Of course. I am actually waiting for Tom at Bat-Safe to get back to me on buying this Bat-Safe. He gave me instructions but of course as usual I am on so much Pain Medication I am unsure of some of the specifics in his email to me:-) Anyway, I intend to take FULL advantage of all tools at my disposal given the nightmares my wife and I have already faced in our lives. Whatever the cost it seems better to US at least than all we have experienced just being evacuated fro all these wildfires in our area. Then losing your entire home had an entire new level of pain and bottom line, WE will likely always be neurotic from this point on about most everything in life.

      PS- Most all I will likely be using is little 1S and 2S batteries as I am badly disabled trying (badly too at this point) to fly quad copters from an Electric Wheelchair my wife got me to get me OUT of our home. After almost 5 years in bed at hospitals and then at home I agreed to let her borrow to get me one and a few cheap toy grade quads. FIRST day out had a flyaway and been downhill from there:-) Bottom line, she was right, I DO need to get out and it is a nice hobby but sure rubs my nose in just how disabled I now am. As a former Big Wave Surf competitor and motorcyclist, I do NOT do well with 6 spine fusions a bunch of old War wounds and too many things to even list. I wish it was ME who could do a "FLYAWAY" most days...Back to this product I am simply SO grateful that someone is willing to step up and work on these problems for those of us who cannot.

      I do nearly all my charging in my BatSafe. Fortunately I've never had to put it to the test. You're smart to be cautious. Best wishes.

    that's why i just charge mine in the field if it go's up it's only going to damage my small table i have, or in my shed on the bench and it wouldn't damage a thing if all my battery's went up at the same time in there, it's been well and truly tested with my forge only thing i have melted in there was one off the strip light ends then i got a fluorescent tube smack me on the head lol have been close to one going bang once when i was charging it in the field it wasn't far away from being to hot to touch did sometimes charge them in the house but after that completely stopped

    could lipo batteries go up in flames when just storing them or is it just mainly when your charging them?

    • @AZJim12
      @AZJim12  5 лет назад +2

      A lipo is most likely to catch fire during charging or after being used too hard. By that I mean pulling more amps than recommended which causes the battery to get hot and/or puff up. I've heard of batteries catching fire a while after a flight where they were over amped or damaged by a crash. Lipos at storage voltage of about 3.8 volts per cell are unlikely to catch fire spontaneously. Storing in a metal container or lipo bag is a good practice. I'm not a battery engineer so am speaking from experience not science.

      mainly overcharging or when damaging them. Shorting can also lead to ignition. Also : discard puffed batteries.

    How safe is charging lipos or storing lipos in a cinder block bunk or cinder block box that’s what I’m using now

    • @AZJim12
      @AZJim12  3 года назад +1

      Lots of folks have chosen that solution. The goal is to keep the heat and flame contained for the few seconds it takes for the battery to vent and burn.

    Good lecture, but "xyz will keep most of the gases in the container" is a myth. The gas will escape in any case, otherwise you would later open a pressured container. Smoke will come out in any case, the Batsafe offers the best protection against soot and poisonous gas.
    I charge mine in a cashbox with a hole large enough to run the leads through and most importantly, I stay in the room when charging. Experience tells us that you have about 30secs to bring a hissing battery outside before it bursts in flames. That is time enough for me. Dealing with batteries correctly is the best precaution. Check battery for damage before charging. Check that the cells are balanced before and after charging. Use a brand charger. Get rid of unbalanced batteries and double check the settings on your charger before pressing the start button. Always balance charge. Don't store batteries other than in storage charge. Avoid excess heat and cold. I additionally have my storage box packed with bags of Pyroballs. They are said to melt to a glass layer around the battery in case of fire and extinguish it quickly. RUclips has videos that demonstrate this to work.
