i loved alley viper v.1. the molded on gun and "mine" are one assembly, its a rifle launched grapling hook and the "mine" in where the rope is wound around to help the climbing of buildings and associated structures. okay, i knew i had a joe comic somewhere, and i found it. its the g.i.joe comics magazine december issue #1. its still in great condition. the only gijoe comic related material i have left.
The reason the backpack gun looks that way is because it's not a crossbow but a grappling hook launcher. The v1 had a detachable hook and cord. It was pretty cool but i agree, it would have been better if the whole gun was detachable.
love this! thank you! even how nice it is of you to give this to a Joe collecting friend I think you should keep it on a shelf since it was your last GI JOE! Maby you remember your first Joe as well? get him too and let them stand together! even you dont collect toys It's nostalgic
about the backpack, isn't it a grappling hook kit? The "mine" is the rope lodging I think, there's even a detail going from the "crossbow" to the "mine" that really remembers a rope...
Alley Viper was probably my top 5 figures. He has a Boba Fett Mystique about him , where "He's Cooler then Bad" attitude. in Playing he'd usually be the one that kills off the crappy Joes. So when I eventually used my favorite at the time to get him at the end, it would be in epic stand off style .
Chris, do you remember an even smaller comic that came wrapped around Bazooka Joe bubble gum? I used to collect them back in the 70's, in the UK, is it worth troping?, I wonder. Thanks for another great episode.
This was my favorite toy growing up and I was telling my buddy about it and he got me one for my birthday this year. Such a good gift, such a good friend.
3:00 wow.... the GI Joe for India looks like something you'd pick up at the DOLLAR STORE under the name "COAST GYARD FIGHTING MAN!" Mispellings and all! 😉 The Killer Whale was awesome though... why they let that loser CUTTER command it is anyone's guess...... 🙄
For a future episode, may i suggest choosing a 80s Marvel Productions episode (GIJoe, Transformers or other) that was written by a veteran Marvel writer, like Marv Wolfman or Steve Gerber?
I am a little squemish that you opened it, is the comic the one that's worth more? Or would a complete figure on package fetch more? I dunno in just asking, I dont even collect action figures
Every Christmas I look for action figures with comics to give to Toys For Tots because 1. It gets kids to read. 2. I don't know if the kid who'll get it knows what the toy is so at least the comic will give him/her some idea.
About the comic that came with the figure, I was in high school at the time and still collected GI Joe (I remember how disappointed I was with the last two series before it was canceled). I recall some of the mini-books came in as a promotion to promote the Marvel series. It was not like the mini-comics for He-Man. Some of the comics came with the figures did not include that figure. I believe the figure in red is really a Crimson Guard Commander, the give away is the circular chest piece that Crimson Guard Commander had and Alley-Viper had a vest. (I would imagine another user would mention this before me). It would prove my point. I wish Marvel or Hama would have done it just like Mattel did for He-Man, a comic about the character it was a package for. It would have been interesting to see how this Alley-Viper to be in Cobra or his position as Alley-Viper.
3:04 I think u mean 82-92 cause for those years we had the classic explosion artwork for the g.i.joe toys 93 and 94 we didn’t have those anymore I still like it though
Twenty-five years ago, $30 was a lot, especially for a kid... though I guess the Star Wars vehicles were expensive, too, which is why I never bought/received any. :-(
I actually like snake-eyes 5th uniform if you want something that's by zero means a strong look in this comic that would be Muskrat v3 that design for muskrat was absolute garbage!
What a cool design. I love Cobras troopers, there all so cool and gotta love the snake names. Great vid!

matt lerch Beat me to it. Grappling gun and reel.
This reminded me of the "Big Jim and the P.A.C.K." product comic from the 70's!
*I think the art was by Kirby.
That's not an Alley Viper at 11:58. It's a "Crimson Guard Commander" released in 1993, just in different colours.
Good catch. I didn't recognize it but knew it wasn't an Alley Viper
Thanks for this review. This is my first exposure to Alley Viper version 2, and I think it looks like a seriously cool looking design.

Thanks for the info!
The hook was detachable on V1, but it still didn't come with a cord.
GI JOE are iconic, boy 80s Joe is even better!

My first was Major Bludd. A friend gave it to me because he had two.

The detail indeed remembers a rope.

bonpourvous Sure, I remember those. It was always a simple pun joke. I call it "gentle" humor. I'll think about it.
Nice review! I had this figure and I still have the comic that came with it. And I think you're right about the mine on the backpack.
joefan82 There were 4 different comics. Do you have the same one?
25:44 Alley Viper establishes dominance by T-posing
This was my favorite toy growing up and I was telling my buddy about it and he got me one for my birthday this year. Such a good gift, such a good friend.
I gotta say, the V1 shield is soooo much better than the V2 shield... I just wish it had the arm clip the V2 ahd, it would make posing much easier.

This was my fav joe as a kid. Hard to see you open it
Cheers Chris

Somehow no Viper Vipers.
i wish hasbro would make gi joes again.
Me too
The black/yellow color scheme makes the figure look like a bumble bee.
my fave gijoe toy was alley viper saved my lunch money and bus fair for over a year just to buy that orange and blue slice of heaven

Actually, Alley-Viper was my favorite since v1. And I have been trying to build a troop of them. Along with Lamprey and Viper.

Alley viper = Steelers fan!!!!!

Cobra street boots lol....
gi joe dino hunters...lol.
maybe they dropped the ball, cobra commander mounted on a t-rex might have been pretty cool,
they are reptiles after all.

Were you actively trying to copy HCC788's articulation rundown?
Yes. He invited me to do this to participate in Cobra Convergence.
