Did Rob Liefeld Ever Improve? - Comic Tropes (Episode 100)

  • This episode asks the question of whether Rob Liefeld's art got better over time. Two years ago I did an episode that looked at his artwork in New Mutants #100 from 1991. So this time I jump forward 20 years to his art in Deadpool Corps #8 from 2011.
    Using the same list of his artistic tropes, I check out how many we come across in his more recent work. And each time I see one, I try a disgusting soda like Ranch Dressing Soda.

    I've always hated Rob Liefelds work and I don't want to come off pretentious but I've been an artist my entire life and I've always studied art and learned from masters such as Jae Lee, Lienil Yu, Alex Ross and of course, Jim Lee to name a few. I'm nowhere close to being at any level they're at but I know that one of the most important aspects of being a comic book artist is learning, and constantly trying to improve your craft. It goes for every medium in life really, which is why I have such an issue with Rob Liefeld. I believe that because he got hired at 19 to do comics professionally, he, for lack of better terms, got a big head and became extremely narcissistic to the point where he felt like he didn't have to improve anymore. Jim Lee's earlier work had flaws because he was also a young artist but even to this day he's still finding ways to keep at it and try new techniques to improve his craft. Now he's regarded as a legend and has earned his place in the comic landscape. However, Liefeld not only stopped improving but it seemed to halt completely when he got extremely lucky with Deadpool. I will say that yes, his artwork has technically "improved" now compared to then (he at least figured out how ribcages work) but not by much and it's extremely unfortunate. What makes it worse is that I know many artists my age and older would give a limb and an organ to have started a professional career in comics at 19 and even make a fortune with our own characters as he did but it feels like he stopped giving a shit. I guess the summation of my dislike can be described as a waste of potential. If he had not gotten so arrogant and cocky because of his success, he would probably be up there with Jim Lee and so many amazing artists today. I apologize if I offend anyone who supports Liefeld and I want to say really quickly that while I am new to your content, I am thoroughly enjoying watching your videos on these topics. Great video. I think Liefeld's newer stuff is a little more disciplined and toned down. In my opinion his strengths were always layouts that had bold impact and intensity, not really accuracy or consistent details. On a technical level he has improved in some ways, but in other ways he has kind of taken out a lot of what he used to be great at.

    • @jeremycline9542
      @jeremycline9542 6 лет назад +12

      Interesting take. I'm fascinated by how Liefeld has been able to stay popular. In that sense I respect him, and any creator who manages to stay in the game for so long. But I never thought about it terms of layouts or camera angles. Reminds me of Ditko and how well he uses layouts, even during those times when the guys inking over his breakdowns do a poor job.

    • @sk8mike
      @sk8mike 5 лет назад +8

      That's probably part of it, I just think he got too popular too fast. In the 90s there were lots of speculators buying comics as investments, and not even reading the books. Liefeld didn't get famous because people liked his art. Liefeld became famous because he was in a 501 Jeans commercial made by Spike Lee. After that he became one of the high selling artists in the industry, and I think it went to his head. He did think he needed to improve his art because his books were all selling so well.

      Yeah, sure, considering Dragonball started in 1986 and Toriyama drew consistently for over 10 years non-stop on a WEEKLY basis, besides writing his own story and doing the character designs for games like Chrono Trigger and Dragon Quest without stopping drawing manga, missing a deadline or failing at drawing backgrounds and perspectives.
      Oh, almost forgot Dr. Slump, which had a pretty lengthy run of 4 years (WEEKLY BASIS).

    Ironically I think his early DC stuff is his best work. He proved he could actually draw before he developed his horrible style affectations that distorted anatomy and common sense. His "Secret Origins" story of Nightshade was a very solid beginning, and his "Hawk and Dove" was good as well. It's when his "New Mutants" work began blowing up that he went off the deep end. Success simply went to his head.

    I know this video is nearly 2 years old, but I find this interesting. Many of those artists from that time period have stopped growing. I blame the deadlines and workload from allowing them to get better. One artist that most of us like that makes one of these big "tropes" is Jim Lee. How often does he avoid drawing feet? My eye is drawn (no pun) to Jim's lack of feet, especially on covers.

    I've just recently gotten heavily into comic collecting after about a 20 year break. The over-saturation of the market in the 90's kinda turned me off to buying new comics. Still read my old ones, but stopped buying new ones. Now that I'm back in full tilt, I'm learning a lot about what's been happening over the years from great channels like yours. I wasn't aware of the controversy over Liefeld that's been going on. Seems like folks either really love the guy or they hate 'em. Not much in-between that I can find. Fascinating to learn this stuff here. Thanks again for a great, fun informative channel.

      Jeff I left comics from 1991 to 2015 and have had a similar experience. The Lees and the Liefelds (and the speculators) really turned me off, but if only I had been a fan of, say, the Legion of Super Heroes, I would have stayed in comics.

Everything great has been tossed away in favor for Edgy Kid's fantasy, like: Guns, DUAL WIELDING GUNS, dark colors, power suits, shitty shading, ugly colors, EVERYONE BECOMING BUFF, I MEAN, MAGNETO IN THE 60's HAD A NORMAL SHIRT, AND IN THE 90's HE'S BECOME A BUFFASS BIMBO.

    Yeah, he's definitely far better than his infamous 90's work. Nowadays, you can look at Rob Liefeld's recent artwork and unironically say "Wow, that is great". I didn't know about the more recent Deadpool example, but another one would be his Micronauts cover. I had completely no idea it was Liefeld, until I saw his signature.
    It also helps that he's become much more self-aware and less defensive, even creating a self-parody character made entirely of pouches who uses a pouch gun with pouch bullets (I think it's called "The Pouch"). That's the kind of humor I think Liefeld always needed to have back in his heyday, but he was sorely lacking because "I just sold over a million copies, clearly I know better than you!" Leaning more on colorists I think plays to his strengths too. The problem with that is, he gets all of the limelight when it's the colorist (people who are already notoriously underappreciated as is) pulling his weight and making him look good. Even here, his colorist (Romulo Fajardo Jr.) doesn't get a name-drop, despite having been the one who actually made that art pop.

    • @medes5597
      @medes5597 5 лет назад +8

He got into comics at a time when his work, as bad as it was, somehow resonated with audiences, and fit well into the overall direction comics were heading into. I think it's great to see that he's improved and that he's still on books from the big companies sometimes. Kinda nostalgic and makes me happy for him.
    I do feel a little bit like if he was still operating as he did in the 90s it would be harder to get away with it now. Not only was that stuff more in vogue then (tho he did help popularize it) but the 90s was also a more lawless period for comics. All sorts of wild shit going on, and more books running at any given time and less scrutiny on those books (most artists wouldn't dare attempt a bathing scene nowadays), etc.

      It's always been painfully obvious that Liefeld has no idea what he's doing.But one great thing about the comic book industry(depending on how you look at it)is that there aren't really stringent requirements to work in it(and even more so,nowadays,with all of the different avenues available to aspiring writers and creators).
      There are a lot of writers and artists who quite frankly,aren't that talented,aren't that creative and who aren't that skilled but they still managed to make it,anyways.I think Liefeld is just the most famous example of that.
