All those texture and shadow lines from Everyone trying to be Todd McFarlane or Scott Williams just made every book look scratchy. Almost the sole reason the art did a 180 and got minimalist today. Art from 78-88 was so clean by comparison.

    I’ve been collecting comics since 1977, and drawing professionally since the late eighties. I have always loved that Rob Liefeld completely had his own style in an industry full of clones. Like Jack Kirby and Berni Wrightson, Rob’s work is always immediately identifiable. I also loved his super dynamic layouts. I found his work to really embody the fun and action that comics were all about for me.

      I'm a professional fine artist and back in the late '90s, in high school and university, I wrote and drew a little indie comic series. I like to think my work improved over those 5-6 years, mainly out of sheer repetition. Draw the same characters over and over and you refine your style very quickly. But unless you're pushing yourself to improve, being critical of possible shortcuts in your work that weaken your style, those shortcuts gradually become the norm, your baseline. It's an easy trap to fall into because of the repetition, and it requires constant monitoring to avoid.

    I, too, liked Liefeld back in the days.
    Then, I started drawing myself - a year later, I couldn't ignore the weak points in his drawing technique.
    Also, at the time I had the impression that he was de-evolving as an artist, that he was growing increasingly sloppier as time went by.

    What's mindboggling is that at 12:38 he had a perfect reason to hide the feet of the guy in the front (since he already successfully hid the feet of the other guys) yet he actually does not. Instead he fucking puts them in the other panel where they are just ruining the whole panel :D

  • @JimV90

    I honestly feel bad for Rob Liefeld. Yes, in my opinion he is at fault for not developing his art to a more sophisticated level, but the amount of hate this guy gets just doesn't seem right. I, as well as others may find it difficult to grasp how he became famous for his comics, but the fact of the matter is, people out there do like his art, otherwise he would not be where he's at in life. This all just goes to demonstrate the subjectivity of art.

    • @Impybutt
      @Impybutt 6 лет назад +47

      I think most of the ire Rob Liefeld gets for his art has to to with the fact that he earns millions of dollars for being sup-par, and has actively influenced a lot of young artists who regarded his work as something to aspire to.

      The analogous to Liefeld is Limp Bizkit and Adam Sandler. Completely juvenile in its art but kids think it's cool especially when you don't see the stupidity. I worked at a Limp Bizkit concert and the most people you saw was 10-14 year olds. Limp Bizkit is essentially below average rap on top of below average metal guitars, but you see Fred Durst backwards hat and talking about nookie and kids eat it up. Same thing with Adam Sandler movies, shit quality, but kids fucking love it for some reason.

      He knew how to draw, just didn't care to learn everything their was about anatomy. He had a style and he was with McFarlane who you can see inspiration in some of his panels. He also created deadpool, interesting designs, experimentation, and mistakes come from Liefeld but to not a lot of people can do what he does at the time it takes him to do it.

    • @coldfeet1000
      @coldfeet1000 6 лет назад +14

      Round "He also created Deadpool..." Came on! Great shit! People talk about deadpool like he was Batman, but no, its just a miserable copy of deathstroke...

    • @RubbinRobbin
      @RubbinRobbin 6 лет назад +9

      Luis Fernando Barbieri AND Spawn is a miserable copy of Spider-Man and ghost rider but we don’t give liefeld hate because he’s an artistic legend? Rob like Todd knew what was cool to draw, these were superheros after all.
