True. It's not like he copies the reference exactly as it is anyway, he exaggerates certain features and changes the line of angle to give it a more "animated look", clearly showing skill in using references.
As som one who illustrates himself and hopes to do it professionally, I don't get that complaint. Sometimes a reference is needed, and it's not cheating, it STILL takes work and effort for to make the image work.... Heck, it takes about as much effort to make the photos viable references.
Alex Ross's style virtually demands reference material. He has the technique to create stunning hyper realism. If the anatomy and lighting isn't perfect, it would fail.
Look at the Shazaam art next to its reference: the posture, proportions, setting, figurative prominence, facial structure, and elasticity of the costume are *all* different. He took a picture of someone indoors for exterior artwork, and it still turned out perfectly. Even if the model was standing by a window, he's still not being lit the same way as if he'd been outdoors. Yet that's one of the only things he used. So, I don't think I can agree that his style demands reference. Maybe it does, he's the one deciding to use it after all, but he cans a lot of it in the end. I'm really impressed by how useless that reference feels in comparison to the finished artwork.

Green and purple are somewhat codified as "villain" colors. Red, white, blue, and gold (yellow) tend to be "hero" colors. You can also look at it as Primary colors = Hero. Secondary = Villain.
@@RPO808 Think Sadie is referring to CMYK 4 color process. It's Cyan, Magenta, Yellow, Black. But that is the general color scheme of comicbookcs, particularly Marvel to have heroes in Primary colors and villains in Secondary. P.S. Magneto's got the purple cape, gloves, and piping. It really is a conscious decision they made. And very evident if you look at Spider-Man and his Rogue's gallery. It's not 100% uniform for obvious reasons, like the Hulk. But, in general, that's how they do 'em.

@@jamesoblivion wtf? Why does that make him a hack? Do we not care more about WHAT is portrayed, the story etc. ? Do we care how that image was created?
Guyver by Yoshiki Takaya. One of the longest running manga series, it has been going since 1985. What fascinates me about it are the extremely complex and detailed character designs. Takaya took influence from many Tokusatsu style sources. As manga styles have continually evolved as the years have passed many (not all) more modern series have moved towards more stylized less detailed character renderings I have always found it heartening looking back to the series that have been going constantly since the 1980's such as Guyver, Berserk, and JoJo and being blown away by the sheer amount of drawing and inking that went into each individual panel. An intricate style that has slowly been disappearing for many years now.
I always liked the way Romita Jr drew Spider-Man when he was in costume during his run with JMS in the early 2000s. He had a nice balance between muscular but still lean and wiry that I think fit an adult Peter very well. But yeah, his faces can get samey and there's a boxy-ness to some of his characters that can look a bit stiff.
All the sailor moon art books are gorgous and pretty much spot on for fashion illustration. naoko takeuchi is big into fashion and a lot of the looks still hold up. She also does some cool stuff like putting beads, doilies or salt on her art and photographing it to get texture. If you do her definately look at the art from the sailor moon art books
some manga artist you should check: Kentaro Miura - berserk Hirohiko Araki - jojo bizarre adventure Jungi Ito - veries (focus mainly on his monster desing and body horror) Itagaki Keisuke - Baki(in case you thought Rob Liefeld draws insane body poportions) Tite Kubo - Bleach (his earlier work was amazing but with time his art has gotten less imprasive)
Bleach got progressively worse because of two things. One was the grind, pushing that out weekly means you're usually trying to find ways to cut corners. The other is probably just a lack of drive. Even if you want to keep doing the story after years of doing it you're going to start feeling the weight of the work. But yeah there's a ton of great art out there(And awful). I mean check out Eat-man's artist: ruclips.net/video/p0Y_rCFutv0/видео.html
What I don't get is that indie artists will get destroyed for tracing pictures when professional artist Greg Land does it and gets paid big bucks to do it.
For manga definetly check out some of: Jojo's Bizarre Adventure Berserk Any of Junji Ito's work The Promised Neverland Mob Psycho Grappler Baki You have to take into account tho, that most manga are extremely stylized, like Jojo's in its 1-4th parts, and Mob Psycho, and most definitely Baki, but they're deliberately stylized rather than it being bad artists.
One thing to take in mind with manga artists is that almost all areselftaught and started their career as a complete beginner most of them also write the comic they illustrate. That is because of how magazines there hire newcomer. A bit much to explain but Id suggest you to read about how manga artists are hired for weekly magazines to know the very different work backgrounds
@PopCross Studios I recommend checking out Tetsuo Hara's art especially in Fist Of The North Star as he was basically one of the few artists who started the trend for the manly anime art style and depicted the anatomy of bodybuilder's and famous action stars quite wonderfully. I would recommend checking out both his older stuff as well as his last pieces. His use for complementary colours is great which in turn accentuates the story and character's emotion. Also, unlike newer artists, he primarily used watercolour paints for colouring. Sorry, this was long as shit but hey I got a lot of good stuff to say about Hara's work.
I'm not an artist and despite these "Professional X Reacts to Good and Bad X" becoming somewhat saturated, this particular example is excellent and I love it. You get a sub. Cheers!
Check out Kentario Miura and/or Hirohiko Araki or Takehiko Inoue They are completely different artists but I love their work like Berserk(K.Miura), Jojo(H.Araki), and vagabond(T.Inoue) Of course there are many more mangas made by them but those I love the most
Stuart Immonen is one of my favorite artists. He has a simple. fluid art style but manages to capture motion and dynamics with the best of them. I honestly don't understand why he isn't talked about more within the pantheon of comic legends. Even Jim Lee - who is a personal hero of mine - really is only great at hero poses but not capturing action.
You can actually learn from his explanation how to be a better artist, the way he praises and criticize their work and coloring are full of useful information, that's a professional right there
frame Strider Thank you so much! That’s really my intention with these episodes, not to blast any less than stellar work, but to help people (and myself) learn from the good and less good elements of these artists work!
There's also a big amount of disney villains hat are purple and green. It's they've got a big neon sign saying "this is the evil purple&green dude/witch".😅
2:26 It's not Anatomy what these people struggle with. They study anatomy frequently, it shows, what they can't handle is drawing anatomy in correct perspective volume because they do not go through the process of "blocking volumes" as geometrical shapes before adding muscles, the result is often a formulaic rigid pose in their characters because of that.
Nice to see you reviewing Mignola's work. Most comic/layout artists have a little bit of graphic design experience, but I've heard said that Mike Mignola has talent in BOTH graphic design and illustration. They aren't wrong. Every piece of his art is a treasure.
*Some Manga Artstyle or Images that you should look* -Jojo Bizarre Adventure -Berserk -Vagabond -Slam Dunk -Death Note -One Piece -One Punch Man(Yusuke Murata ver.) -Attack on Titan -Vinland Saga -Oyasumi Punpun -Gantz -Blade of the Immortal
God, no, not Attack on Titan. Isayama is a good writer and a worldbuilding expert but his art absolutely sucks. Especially the early volumes of AoT. Hoo boy. Not saying the later versions were much better but the art in the previous ones really sucked big boiled eggs.
These is a huge difference, not even diffenence, in looking at reference photos for building... horses... people...and actually using and drawing and incorporating that into your own art work, as opposed to flat out tracing. (Sorry, run on sentence I think.) Great video.
LOVING this series so far! I'm so glad you're doing it as it brought me to your channel. I am excited to hear your opinions on some manga artists' work as well. For good art, I'd plug: Oh! Great (Air Gear), Takeshi Obata (Death Note, Bakuman.), Kentarou Miura (Berserk), Adachitoka (Noragami, Alive: The Final Evolution), Naoki Urasawa (Monster, 20th Century Boys), and Karakarakemuri (Takeru: Opera Susanoh Sword of the Devil)
That Wolverine cover has been and always will be one of my all time Wolverine favorites. I love the facial expression and how strange it all feels. It adds a flair that I'm super drawn to
I'd really love to know what you think about the style in the asterix comics... (Also if you ever do something with manga: i think bleach had a really big change in style from the first issues to the later ones...)
For manga you should do Berserk by Kentaro Miura. An early chapter and later stuff. You can literally see his progress. He went from meh'diocre to one of the greatest.
One Punch Man is also pretty good although yeah the people who draw those manga should be considered gods in their field especially Takehiko Inoue (vagabond) and Kentaro Miura (Berserk)
As a Brazilian I'm genuinely happy you put Ivan Reis as one of the best today. Brazilians draw artists are not appreciated around brazil and don't have any support, so when you support Ivan after all problems he had to overcome, to became one of the top illustrator in the industry, its really make my brazilian heart proud and very happy.
Berserk should absolutely be a contender if you ever review manga. The art has changed significantly since it first game out like what, 25-30 years ago? I don’t remember, but I’d say it’s improved from the first book. Almost every panel is a masterfully crafted work of art and is definitely worth a look. It barely even resembles the typical manga/anime style, which I’d say is a good thing.
For the manga video: For awesome things check Hiromu Arakawa's manga pages (She's the artist and writer of Fullmetal Alchemist) and anythig made by Naoki Urasawa For... not so awesome things xD check Hajime Isayama's first numbers of Attack on Titan (anatomy was crap, but I think his action pannels where preety good allready at that point)
The thing with color themes in comics and other types of media is green is usually used to represent bad or evil things like poison or villains while red, blue and gold/yellow tend to be hero/good themes i/e health potions. While it’s not exactly a rule it an ordinary thematic choice.
Do7 I was told at the art institute of Philadelphia, that as long as you're NOT creating FINE ART. There is NO such thing as right or wrong. The simple fact that you are creating fantasy, let the sky be your limit or no limitations at all. Trees can be blue. The sky can be polka dot if you wish. Because it's your own created universe. Even perspectives can go askew! I agree with that statement.
I almost can't even comprehend what Alex Ross gets out of using reference images, the end result is often *so* different, when you consider that the _details_ - the things most likely to be helped by reference - are often left out, altered or exaggerated in such a way that you can imagine being second nature to a career artist, you're almost left to wonder if he needs them as much as he thinks he does.
I wondered why his entries in the Marvel Zombies Volume 1 (well, the Fantastic Four arc that introduced the concept) looked so inconsistent and why the women looked so ... well, pornographic. Now I know. And, now that I know, yea, he's awful. Going back and re-reading those parts with this knowledge makes them look that much worse.
Was definitely not cool of me to not credit the Inkers and colourists, I promise to do that in the next episode! Sorry about that everyone!!!

Anyone who says Alex Ross "cheats" because he creates reference photos to help draw from is, frankly, a jealous fool.
corvus1970 most people using that argument don't even know how to draw, if they did they'd know proper references are a must have for a good artist
Norman Rockwell used reference images. Alex comes across from the same school of illustrator.

Green and purple are somewhat codified as "villain" colors. Red, white, blue, and gold (yellow) tend to be "hero" colors.
You can also look at it as Primary colors = Hero. Secondary = Villain.

Rebel Wolf and purple.
@@Circuit.Cosplays why aren't red and blue actually not primary? Is it a joke I'm missing? Please to explain.

I’m so on board with your Romita jr criticisms. His mid 2000s Spider-Man stuff irks me a bit
Everybody has the same face and square hands
I always liked the way Romita Jr drew Spider-Man when he was in costume during his run with JMS in the early 2000s. He had a nice balance between muscular but still lean and wiry that I think fit an adult Peter very well. But yeah, his faces can get samey and there's a boxy-ness to some of his characters that can look a bit stiff.
comic book ludenn I'm creating
That first one looks like Jim Carrey in the 90's cosplaying as Wolverine.

your reaction towards the arts from a famous artist actually did help me to improve my artwork style. thank you for the video as i enjoyed it so much.
All the sailor moon art books are gorgous and pretty much spot on for fashion illustration. naoko takeuchi is big into fashion and a lot of the looks still hold up. She also does some cool stuff like putting beads, doilies or salt on her art and photographing it to get texture. If you do her definately look at the art from the sailor moon art books
some manga artist you should check:
Kentaro Miura - berserk
Hirohiko Araki - jojo bizarre adventure
Jungi Ito - veries (focus mainly on his monster desing and body horror)
Itagaki Keisuke - Baki(in case you thought Rob Liefeld draws insane body poportions)
Tite Kubo - Bleach (his earlier work was amazing but with time his art has gotten less imprasive)
Ya baki is fucking nuts
Bleach got progressively worse because of two things.
One was the grind, pushing that out weekly means you're usually trying to find ways to cut corners.
The other is probably just a lack of drive. Even if you want to keep doing the story after years of doing it you're going to start feeling the weight of the work.
But yeah there's a ton of great art out there(And awful). I mean check out Eat-man's artist:

yea araki's art is very western-like. But why all jojo characters body are really flexible. Like they don't even have a spine.
It would be good if he reacts to different parts and compare the evolution of araki's art

God yes. I love his art
For manga definetly check out some of:
Jojo's Bizarre Adventure
Berserk
Any of Junji Ito's work
The Promised Neverland
Mob Psycho
Grappler Baki
You have to take into account tho, that most manga are extremely stylized, like Jojo's in its 1-4th parts, and Mob Psycho, and most definitely Baki, but they're deliberately stylized rather than it being bad artists.
Nire Baki is a great choice. The anatomy of some the characters goes really far
Nire Promised Neverland isnt that crazy. Its good but a lot of shonen look better
Takehiko Inoue (creator of Slam Dunk and Vagabond) has to be mentioned if you're going to list these manga

Would love to hear your thoughts on Brian Bolland and Dave McKean. Love their dark and disturbing pieces in particular.

8:16 It was a conscious choice. Take superman for example. All his villains have a green a purple colour design also. It's no coincidence.
There's also a big amount of disney villains hat are purple and green. It's they've got a big neon sign saying "this is the evil purple&green dude/witch".😅
@@mathilda6763I think it depends on what colour the protagonist is
@@TheCelticTiger32
Protagonists are very often in primary colors though. Villains are usually in secondary colors.
Back in the day they had a limited color palette, so I'm not surprised that they didn't want to get everything muddied in the panels.

Ed Boon yeah except for the most recent chapters when guts and the gang get to elfhelm
Berserk is a masterpiece in terms of art. 10/10 would love to see him react to the dragons, monsters, the emotions...

The thing with color themes in comics and other types of media is green is usually used to represent bad or evil things like poison or villains while red, blue and gold/yellow tend to be hero/good themes i/e health potions. While it’s not exactly a rule it an ordinary thematic choice.
If you’re going to study art from manga please do Berserk!!
Finally, a man of culture.
[Ditko or Stan] reserved Green for villains, I think they talk about it in one of those history of comics documentaries
That's true. There isn't a lot of green heroes in Marvel. Like Hulk, She-Hulk, Drax, Gamora, Mantis (?), Rogue, errrr... Mar-Vell originally kinda.
Greg Land is so bad that he should be blacklisted from the industry. Marvel has no standards.
The porn faces are ridiculous.
