Illustrator Reacts to Requested Comic Book Artists

- In the short time that I've been doing 'Illustrator Reacts to Good and Bad Comic Book Art' I've gotten hundreds of requests for different artists who's work I should go over. So in this episode I'm going to talk about the manga, comic, design and fan art of a bunch of requested artists.
In this episode we've got Junji Ito, the widely requested artist of some pretty freaky horror art, Lee Bermejo, Akira Toriyama (the creator, writer and illustrator of Dragon ball) Esad Ribic, David Finch who's course to draw like him is linked here www.thegnomonw..., Jason Fabok, Skottie Young, Gabriel Picolo, Tsutomu Nihei, Andrew Wildman and Mark Bagley. It's a lot more artists than I normally talk about so I hope I did them all justice.
This was also a bit more of a genuine reaction. In the last few episodes I've spent more time researching a smaller number of artists, so I hope this episode is still as informative and entertaining as the previous ones!
Also, as always, I'd like to thank the Corridor Crew channel and LegalEagle for inspiring this series with their 'VFX Artists React to Great and Bad CGI' and 'Lawyer Reacts to Always Sunny'. I wouldn't have started making these episodes if it weren't for their inspiration and great content. Both are linked here:

You don't think Dave Finch , who is great and learned from his videos and helped me a lot but he has the "same face" problem Campbell has as well. Finch was is still great though i love his Wonder Woman comics.
this may seem like a strange request. but please look at some Gorefield art.
I wish you had shown images of his non-horror manga, the one where he talks about his cats, cause he has the talent to make even those a little disturbing XD
If you've read spiderman life story please tell me if it's worth picking up .
PLEASE LOOK AT TOKYO GHOUL (RE) ARTWORK.
Ishida really improved a TON from the first tokyo ghoul!
Also Ohtaka Shinobu from Magi please! Their designs are super unique!

Junji Ito with context: Oh god, why?
Yeah, its like that.
fuck yeah, the art of junji ito is disturbingly fascinating, he always finds a way to disturb the fuck out of me but i can't stop reading it because of it so fucking fascinating. i remember when i finished uzumaki i couldn't see a fucking spiral without getting uncomfortable.

@@zleeven Yes, specially Jack in the box chapter from Uzumaki. This chapter is a master piece. I´m into horror comics since I was a child and this was one of the few that really gave me creeps.
Since a lot of people don’t know about Junji Ito’s personality: he’s actually a really big scaredy cat.....he did a tour of the Winchester Mansion with Crunchyroll (it’s on RUclips) and he was creeped out quite a bit
He's like a nice and very polite (and in pretty sure not racist) version of H P Lovecraft.

I just love how Junji Ito thought: "Hm. If I cut the scalp of an old man's balding head and stacked them... it could look like a FRIGGIN WISPY MILLIPEDE OMG. I gotta draw that NOW."
I think whats funnier is when you see how he acts in real life, and hes this dorky old man that gets easily scarred by the smallest things.

“Ooh- wait. What if I give this girl a scar, but it turns to a spiral, and she asks someone if there’s something wrong with her eye?! Gotta put that in uzumaki! Fuck yeah”
It's a TON deeper than that, but you got the main part. All of Ito's work has shade towards Japanese culture baked in. Gyo is about the horrific war crimes Japan committed during WWII, Tomie is about how beauty is regarded more than anything in Japan, Melting Classroom is about the absurdity and weaponization of apologizing in Japanese culture, and this one, from My Dear Ancestors, is how the weight and pressure of your ancestors forces you into a role.
Those are all the ancestors of the protagonist's spouse, connected and feeding off the youngest head of the house. The older generation refuses to let go, and the weight compiles every generation, each new head feels the weight of all that came before them.
"Oh God why" instantly knew he was looking at Ito's work.

He even puts horror elements into cute things like kissing his cat on the nose 🤣

Me in a nutshell
Yes :)
Yes Goku's hair are inspired by Astroboy's. Also consider that Toriyama had to rush a lot, during the creation of DragonBall. He had to release a chapter per week, with only one person to help, and without internet or fast communication. Considering that he had to give the sketch to the editor, do eventual corrections, having a bit of back and forth, it's a miracle he did it, at the time, that's why during that period his art was a lot angular and imperfect. They were essentially inked drafts wi a bit of definition.
The Super Saiyan look and the usage of empty/desolated environments are all compromises done to spare time.
If you read is last comic 'Jaco - The Galactic Patrolman' you'll see is Real and improved style.
Oh cool! Wow that’s some intense working conditions. Thanks for the info!!!
@@PopCross Yup, he got sick few times for that, too. By the way I love your Channel, has the right balance between semplicity and entertainment ❤️
but thats the condition for everyone who works for shonen jump. Knowing that makes the works of many mangakas so much more respectable. At least today the pc's make it somewhat easier to do the weekly chapters.
@@xXdimatryXx yea, but they usually have 3-5 assistants and now it's much easier to change things, and to communicate.

I honestly couldn't stop laughing at your reaction to Ito's work. It does what it needs to do extremely well; I don't often get put off in any kind of way but a couple of his stories (particularly Gyo) have really made my skin crawl -- which is great!
I haven't looked deeply into it but as far as I'm aware, he likes to take sometimes extremely simple ideas/scenarios or concepts and just makes them terrifying. They don't even always look that horrifying, but then you'll end up staying awake thinking about that one thing.
Maybe starting with his Cat Diary is a good place. It has the less greusome looking work but gives a hell of a good introduction to his style of artwork.
I love the way Junji Ito uses shading in his artwork. All the shading is very dark, and obscures details, playing off the fear of the unknown. It makes your imagination fill in the gaps
What I really like about Junji Ito is how he makes ordinary things really creepy. Loved your reaction to his work.
Carlos Vazquez he reminds me of an Asian Stephen King.
@@elliottblair31 I think it's fair to compare Ito to Lovecraft. He does create his own eldritch horrors.
That and it seems like the goofier his concepts may seem on the surface, the more disturbing they wind up being.
I’d prefer the deeper dives into less artists.
definitely. I get the impulse to talk about as many artists as you can (there just are so many out there) but a deeper dive just teaches you more.
Like for junji ito it could have been interesting to talk of the caft that a lot of his characters are pretty "bland" in the sense that they are idealized, almost doll like, which contrasts nicely with the gross elements. And his art is also distinctively japanese but nowhere near "mainstream" manga styles.
On a side note, themed episodes could be cool. picking a theme can tie this analysis together and compliment an in depth approach.
Say you tackle Ito in a halloween special, you could compare and contrast the way he uses i=his art to disturb and shock with other horror themed art, maybe compare horror from different cultures, etc...
BTW, it would be awesome to have a metal hurlant themed episode, talking about such artists as Moebius (or maybe he has already?) Enki Bilal, Caza, Philippe Druillet and others. There art was and still is very influential, but mostly in a "subterranean" fashion: they influenced famous movies and such without their work really popping outside of the comic book pedant world.
Ditto. As someone who only dables in comics, I like the more focus on art. I was drawn to Saga bc of the art. i stayed for the great story.
Fewer.
For some reason i read diives
Agreed. There’s a LOT more to say about Akira Toriyama’s work. Both positive and negative.

The best thing I think with Akira Toriyama is that he’s just such an amazing manga artist and each panel just has such good composition and it’s so easy to fully understand the exact action that’s going on and where everything is which is great since most of the characters can fly and air battles are pretty common
To add onto that for reference I believe it was either eye patch wolf or mother's basement can't remember provided breakdown on comp and flow
@@suitrBJ Yeah eye patch wolf's video is actually what got me to try the DBZ manga. It was actually my first time experiencing dragon ball and I was super hooked. It's just so damn good
Toriyama is a god
He's a master in anatomy if you check his various work, not only is he a versitile artist, he's also a gun fanatic.
Sucks that he's stuck doing fantasy now and any form of modern weapon is lost in DBS.
Wait he did Toriyama in this video
This, so much this. After reading the Dragon Ball manga, Dr. Slump and Neko Majin. It's so clear to me that Toriyama is a master of his craft. His layouts and art read so well. I now a have a new standard when reading comic/manga.
I think I've read so much Junji Ito that I'm not remotely bothered by it anymore. I do recommend the manga he did about his cats. He digs into his horror art style for everyday cat things for humor and it works really well.
My suggestion list:
Akira - Katsuhiro Otomo
Vinland Saga - Makoto Yukimura
Hellsing - Kouta Hirano
Olimpos - Aki
A Bride's Story - Kaoru Mori
The Girl From the Other Side: Siúil, a Rún - Nagabe
Genkaku Picasso - Usamaru Furuya (This is a more anime generic style for him but it also shows off his work in several different styles).
Gunjou - Ching Nakamura
Children of the Sea - Daisuke Igarashi
Sanctuary - Ryoichi Ikegami
Kuro - Soumatou
Dr. Stone - Boichi
Oh wow! Quite the list thank you!!! And cool about Ito’s cats. I’ll check that out! (Unless it’s real freaky then maybe not 😝)
When it comes to painstakingly illustrated detail, the Berserk manga has some of the most impressive art I've seen. You should definitely check it out if excruciating detail is your thing.
Ah, He already looked at that.
Tsutomu Nihei is greatly underappreciated. He's my new favorite artist with how he can get from intricate to grungy
perharps its because a majority of reader focusing on character, story line, and its kinda sad that most of manga or comic now a day has so shallow action base story type and sexualize their character to the point its ridiculous, where as Tsutomu's works arent focused on both of them. But because of that his works are the some of the most amazing things ever created. Highly focus on environment, atmosphere and can be interpreted any way you want. There's a video on the philosophy of his manga BLAME! about Existentialism which is really nice.
BLAME! is amazing. wish sidonia had a better ending. nihei really should be the concept artist for some kind of dark souls-ish cyberpunk game
The Dahli of cyberpunk. Or Bosch?
Severely disappointed to see him looking at images from after Blame. Nihei's art went downhill after his daughter ruined his self-esteem.
I'd recommend checking out Kohei Horikoshi's work.

IT'S BEYOND AMAZING.
Junji Ito is such a sweet man you couldn't even tell those were his art pieces if you didn't know
In my opinion, what sets Jason Fabok’s art aside from many others is his extraordinary use of contrast with any beams or backgrounds against the characters in the shot. In the first one you showed, the whip just completely feels like a magical item when it outshines everything else in the shot. Or take for example the middle one you show in the group of three, where the sky is emanating and setting it’s own presence, than it basically allows for Batman to be emboldened while still not distracting from him. Essentially I would call it light shadowing, but I don’t know if that’s even a term or not
