    Starcraft was originally going to be a licensed 40K video game, but Games Workshop and Blizzard had a falling out over the direction Blizzard wanted to take the story. GW withdrew from their agreement and Blizzard repurposed what had already been developed into Starcraft. The story is similar for Warcraft, and that's why Warcraft orcs are green.

      Yeah this video was like a less detailed and more dry version of brickys introduction. It had a lot of good art though. The aesthetic of warhammer really is unique. As fbj noted, humanity in 40k is a much more interesting faction then humans in just about any other sci fy. Always so sanitized and striving to be congruent with the beliefs and values of today instead of considering how they might change in the future, and not for the better.

    Fun fact: the 40k ships (the smallest class being around the size of a star destroyer from star wars, 1.6 kms long) can fight at 25/50/75/95% of the speed of light, all the ships fights you will ever see in cinematic are not meant to be seen by human eyes (with exceptions)

    • @101Mant
      @101Mant 2 года назад +2

      What does that even mean? All speed in space is relative so if you are fighting another ship it's the relative speed of the ships that matters. If two ships are traveling 50% the speed of light in the same direction the engament is happening at 0 velocity.
      They clearly don't approach each other at anything like that velocity as if they did they would just shoot past and that would be it. Since they actually manoeuvre in combat it's clearly not the case.
      Maybe someone at GW who doesn't understand basic physics wrote that but it's clearly rubbish.

    • @valostheroman
      @valostheroman 2 года назад +5

      @@101Mant the lore says so, like the phalanx in the book "flight of the Einstein" (though it wasn't fighting, it was still travelling in real space at 75% of the speed of light) plus i was referring from the outside perspective, us, the 40k ships engages at first at distant lenghts of hundreads of thousands of kms with weapons such as black hole launchers (the example of the speranza mechanicus capital ship), nova cannons etc... To later engage in closer quarters with lanches and then even closer with macrocannons and similar weapons
      The eldar ships are more agile and faster than imperial ships and are said to be able to dodge macrocannons (which travel at 50% of the speed of light or more or less, the macrocannon shell firepower changes every book, for example in one, a cobra class destroyer (1.5kms) had macrocannon shells (50 meters large at least) capable of three teratons of firepower, and in others is much less. it's not realistic i know, it just does, and even then, the lore is quite fragmented here and there)
      If we have to put an imperial star destroyer (SW) against a cobra class destroyer, the ISD crew couldn't even see (theoretically) the 40k ship as the cobra travels at 95% of light while the ISD (at minimum, travels at a thousand km/s) which is impressive but thousands, if not millions of times slower than the cobra class, making it impossible to be seen by the isd crew
      i know physic very poorly, so... sorry for saying something wrong, i don't know how such different speeds interacts with the crew of both sides, i just know that without some technology the iom ships have, for which we don't know nothing, the only guess i can make is something that slow time inside the ships, otherwise the crew would just die in either getting squashed from the speeds, and they also couldn't guide the ship or fire the weapons properly

    • @chrisf7730
      @chrisf7730 2 года назад +2

      @@valostheroman The black library authors have put out a reasonable amount of contradictory information with how things work over the years, so you can take some of it with a pinch of salt, especially when there can be so many contributors and perceptions of the lore. General speed and speed in battle are going to be 2 different things as well, there'd be little point of blitzing past them in a flash especially if you missed the shots taken. A lot of the Imperiums strongest weapons primarily face forwards of the ships so you will want to spend as much time facing them before you close in with a slower speed to utilise the broadsides and boarding actions.
      Whilst the ISD crew may not be able to see the ship with their own eyes, which would be expected being in the void at incredible distances or even speed if flying by, the ships targetting systems and sensors probably can
      As mentioned above, its about relative speeds, you may feel the pull that you get from fast acceleration but when maintaining a speed there is no sensation, the weapons firing rounds that fast would be dealt with by the recoil of the weapon, unless you're touching it, you wouldn't be impacted by it.

    • @valostheroman
      @valostheroman 2 года назад

      @@chrisf7730 the sensors detecting them would make very little to help them, the isd weapons are operated by humans and not by ais, and even if they were actually manged by an ai, as we have seen, the artificial intelligence in star wars is mostly human-ranged (*MOSTLY*) and can reacts with little difference from the standard human, their reaction time is simply not enought to compete, meanwhile the cobra class is probably making fun of them for some time manipulation technology inside the ship, which is probably the best explaination about those fights (the imperium of man, while technologically stagnant, it does have some, like the stasis bombs), i stated the phalanx earlier simply because i don't remember where the battles which quoted the lunar class cruiser speed or the gloriana speed are from, the phalanx quote is the only one i remember the book

      @Kalebfenoir 2 года назад +2

      @@PreceptorGrant I was about to suggest Ciaphas Cain. That series was my doorway into the WH40K world, because it's generally easily digestible and understandable, even if you don't QUITE get the details at first. I wasn't entirely sure what the difference between a boltgun and a stubber was until he describes bolt shells as basically micro-sized gyrojet rocket bullets with mass-reactive explosive tips, and that stubbers were basically just slug-throwing guns. Ciaphas Cain is a great starting point, and good for a chuckle as well. One of the few places you'll actually find laughs in that horrible universe.
      The other would be ironic humor, like Iron Snakes marines puzzling over why they'd been invited to a party, or their confusion when someone says they all look the same when they can see all the myriad details that define each other. Or the time when, after his brothers found his severed arm in a room full of dead Orks and presumed dead, Alessio Cortez's flippant response to his Chapter Master pointing out he's missing an arm. "No I'm not. It's over there!" At which point he just casually walks over, picks up his severed arm and hooks if over his shoulder as if it was a towel. (I think they ended up putting his arm back on later, surgically reinstalling it). It was either that, or he said something like "Oh there it is. I was looking for that!"

    Yeah, Warhammer 40k has been going on since 1987, and we are currently at the 9th Edition of rules, miniatures, and lore, as the three are inexorably linked. Games Workshop also has a division called Black Library dedicated to publishing their Warhammer Fantasy and 40k novels and audio dramas, and they've been going at it since 1997. So yeah. They've got a LOT under their belt.
    As an aside, the Horus Heresy series of novels has seen some success in the wider markets outside of the 40k fandom, and I would recommend picking up a copy of the first book, 'Horus Rising', once you start familiarizing yourself with the setting some more.

    It is a great reaction that you make about the Warhammer universe but let me give you a clarification on a topic that other users have commented on but is wrong. We must start by saying that neither Starcraft nor Warcraft were going to be GW games since there was never any agreement or deal between the two companies. That is a lie told by a famous old fan forum created by wh fans that the majority of the fandom believed without have even investigated. Regarding the similarities, it is simple, both Blizzard and GW were inspired by the same works for their universes, being DUNE, starshiptroopers, alien xenomorph, Ender's Game, the novel among others, so they share basic concepts of science fiction.
    PD: Warhammer 40k was born as a parody of everything famous from the 80s in addition to copying and pasting many fantasy elements into space in order to sell more.

    14:30 as for the Tau "diplomacy" .. it has a very dark side to it.
    The basic structure ist that for around 100 years or so they really do try to be diplomatic with you, but wont stop until your race/planet submits to the tau to be integraded "for the greater good"
    After that grace period they are going to ask you one last time if you wont join the tau empire (and basically submit yourself fully and handig over all governance over yourselves) ... if your answer ist still "no" .. the tau have basically had enough of your shit and start indaving your territory to take you by force.
    And since they operate huge ass mechas with unbelieveably strong weaponary piloted by elite forces that are hyper specialized in what they do, the outcome is basically your civilization gets wiped out.
    And to make them even more dangerous to the setting in its whole ... these giant space-faring mechas with extremely advanced weapons technology are built by a race (the tau themselves) that is barely 3000 years old since they discovered the use of fire.
    THATS how crazily fast they advance their civilization.

    *TL;DR at the bottom*
    Hey, i can't think of specific books or videos that talk in detail about them off the top of my head but since you mentioned you wanted to know about important aspects of the lore i'll mention the four big events in 40k that shape the entire storyline.
    1: War in Heaven. 65 million years ago the necrons got into a fight with the cliche precursor race that is in every scifi setting, called the old ones. The necrons used to be organic but in order to win against the old ones (and cure mega cancer) they created a race of gods called the c'tan who then tricked them into becoming soulless robots, at least until the king of the necrons pulled a no u, shattered the c'tan and trapped the shards into some constructs that could harness their power. They then proceeded to slaughter the old ones, despite the eldar and krorks (precursors to orks, but much bigger, faster *and smarter* which is concerning) trying to help. After this the necrons were damaged so they went to sleep for millions of years, meanwhile the krorks devolved into orks and the eldar filled the power vacuum. Also, all the souls of the old ones who were murdered created chaos. Big oopsie.
    2: birth of slaanesh. As i said, the eldar became the dominant species in the galaxy. So dominant that they became decadent and hedonistic, and like the video mentioned some of them got into t**ture p**n. Being all psykers this whole mass of warp energy got really mixed up by these hedonistic emotions, and around 25k A.D. it got to a point of no return, when the warp got fucked up enough to birth the chaos god of excess and pleasure, slaanesh. He/she/it killed 90% of the eldar in one moment, fucked with their souls a bunch and tore a giant hole between real space and the warp called the eye of terror (this is a surprise tool that will help us later). The opening of the eye caused warp storms everywhere, making warp travel at ftl speeds impossible for humans, so the elves weren't the only ones affected (or maybe i'm remembering wrong and the eye made the storms stop, can't remember). Humans called the period where the storms were active the age of strife, since we couldn't go from planet to planet anymore and human psykers started popping up, therefore sometimes leading to whole wordls being invaded by demons. Kind of a bad situation.
    3: horus heresy. This mostly affects humanity and not many other races but we're the pov so it's one of the most documented events. After the emperor took command of earth (this was a bit after the eye of terror thing, around 30k), he created his legions of space marines to act as soldiers, and -20- 18 sons called primarchs to lead them as generals. One of these was horus lupercal. Despite being the favourite son of the emperor, a lot of shenanigans happened, often involving another primarch called lorgar and his sidekick erebus (fuck erebus, all my homies hate erebus), and as such he fell to chaos and convinced eight of his brothers to lead all their legions to earth and overthrow the emperor in the name of chaos. This sparked a massive civil war between loyalists and traitors, which also had side effects with other factions like the guard and admech (not mentioned here sadly). The loyalists won, but like luetin mentioned the emperor was gravely wounded and placed on the golden throne, a giant life support machine that also amplifies his psychic signals to act as a beacon for imperial ships to travel in the warp. If the emperor died, not only would it be catastrophic for the morale of the imperium who sees him as a god, but it would make all ftl useless again, locking countless worlds outside of reach for food or military help. So overall nobody came out victorious from that affair, except khorne probably.
    4: fall of cadia. Very recent. Year 40999. Chaos wanted another go at the whole destroying humanity thing, so they came out of the eye of terror for the thirteenth black crusade led by abaddon the despoiler, formerly right hand man of horus and now supreme commander of chaos (kinda) after horus was killed. Cadia was a military planet next to the eye, meant to guard humanity against chaos. They fought against the chaos invaders and were actually mostly successful, also thanks to the help of some weird individuals like an admech mad scientist called cawl, the general of the space marine legion called the ultramarines, marneus calgar, and weirdly enough an eldar woman called yvraine and a necron overlord called trazyn. Trazyn released some of his captured live specimens (long story, he's great) to help in the fight and also activated some special pillars that mamaged to temporarily shrink the eye, while yvraine managed to resurrect one of the loyalist primarchs, roboute guilliman, leader of those ultramarines i mentioned. Sadly it didn't matter too much because when abaddon was about to fail he threw a blackstone fortress (the death star from star wars but to 40k scale so ludicrously bigger) at the planet of cadia, cracking it, destroying it, and making the hole of the eye of terror much worse, turning it into the great rift separating two parts of the galaxy who now can't communicate that well with eachother and can't ftl from one to another. Sadge.
    Now that i think about it you could watch episode 15 of emperor tts, which also has a big lore recap like mine, but at that point might as well watch the whole series since it's great. We still miss it.
    *TL;DR* four main events. 1, war in heaven, necrons murder gods creating chaos then create other gods then capture them then go to sleep, leaving the krorks to become dumb and the eldar as dominant.
    2, slaanesh, the eldar fuck so much that they create a god of excess that kills most of them and is a nuisance to everyone.
    3, horus heresy, half of the human forces turn to chaos and start a civil war. Emperor gets wounded.
    4, fall of cadia, planet go boom and the imperium is split in half, but at least the emperor's son is alive and enjoying some elfussy.

    As someone who is versed in Starcraft but is just learning more about 40k, you guys got it all wrong, GW and Blizzard were meant to collaborate on Warcraft in making a Warhammer fantasy game, but they had some licensing issues and GW pulled out which was a lot like the Nintendo Playstation situation, Blizzard then went on to make Warcraft their own thing, Starcraft on the other hand like 40k took it's liberties from the 1950s Starship Troopers novel, while the xenos like Zerg are a mixture of those space bugs from starship troopers and Xenomorphs you could see a Hydralisk looking pretty similar, while the Protoss are the steroetypical grey aliens but on steroids with a sense of honor like the Predators, hell both have dreadlocks and use wristblades on melee. Also the Tyranids got their current look back on 2002 which is 3 years after the original Starcraft came out.

    Ork lore is interesting because they've basically won the game as far as the setting is concerned: their end goal is essentially fulfilled. They get to fight.
    There's no angst about one's purpose, because an Ork is supposed to krump, smash, stomp, chop and shoot things. And if whatever they're acting those upon fights back, that's all the better.
    There's no frustration about one's station in life, because if an Ork thinks he should have a higher station, he'll get bigger until he can challenge the current holder of the position. If he dies, at least he tried; if he wins, he's got that position. This cycle repeats up to the Warboss level. Each and every interstellar Waagh has started because a regular Ork somewhere thought he'd be the biggest and baddest Warboss.
    There's no real poverty among the Orkz, because their currency is their teeth, which are perishable. Either they take their own teeth (they regrow) and/or other Orkz' teef, or they directly barter loot.
    There are no concerns about education, because if an Ork has a scholarly bent to his character, it's genetically programmed and he'll become a tinker or a doctor by instinct.
    There's no nepotism among the Orkz, because they all grow from shrooms in the dirt.
    But if you're born a Grot in Ork society, then sucks to be you.

      @Onan - Son of Judah Brother of Er If you look at the stat blocks, the ONLY difference between an Eldar Guardian and the Imperial Guard is that the Eldar are slightly faster (7" vs 6"), a slightly better WS and BS (3+ instead of 4+), and have a better armor save (4+ instead of 5+). They have the same Strength, same Toughness, same Wounds, and slightly _worse_ Leadership (6 instead of 7). So looking at them purely by their statistics blocks, they're faster, fight better, and have better armor, but are EXACTLY as strong as baseline humans. Now, from the _fluff_ point of view... that's different.

    Only one really. It was 'inspired' by 40k. Games Workshop wouldnt let it be official, so if you actually dont know anything about 40k, the warp, and chaos, you'd never know it as a 40k movie.
    It is a movie about mankinds first attempt using the warp. They knew nothing about what the warp was, or what dwelled within, and our cast then has to deal with the results of the Chaos corruption left behind within the ship they are sent to rescue.
    The Movie is called "Event Horizon" and was very well done, and very well liked by most who saw it. Even those who know nothing of 40k.

    40k is much older than Warcraft & Starcraft. Blizzard use to work for Games Workshop. Blizzard wanted to make a medieval fantasy based on 40k called Orks vs Humans. GW turned them down. Then Blizzard left, started their own company, then renamed their game to Warcraft.
    Starcraft is more of a rip off of 40k since Blizzard was fully aware of 40k before they ever came up with Starcraft.
    Terrans = Imperium
    Zerg = Tyranids
    Protoss = Eldar
    Xel'Naga = Old Ones
    In 40k, the Old Ones created all life in the galaxy. However it is unknown if the Tyranids evolved on their own or not cause they were in other galaxies long before the Old Ones were killed off.
    Major difference: Every Hive Fleet has a Hive Mind, and there isn't a "Overmind" equivalent. Their entire goal is to literally eat every single planet in the galaxy. With the Zerg, you at least have a chance of joining their ranks. With the Tyranids, you are nothing but food to them, there is nothing you can offer them that would stop them from eating you.
    When you think about it, the Zerg are nicer.
