@@JonnyFreecss i understand. I've been on youtube since 2015 and i still don't get the ropes
This is why Superman works best as a heroic character rather than a villain
Superman does not represent the scenario “what if someone with power was evil”
He represents what would happen if someone wasn’t.
And that's why I don't watch The Boys, Invincible, or Brightburn
@@seanemery1917Invincible isn’t really “what if Superman was evil”, if it’s “what if general zod pretended to be superman, and Superman was his son and also spiderman?”.
Yeah Invincible is about a boy who trys to do right in a world that does wrong.
@@beakerbot-xq6pb I'm just tired of seeing what-ifs of heroes being villains, especially Superman

The story behind the artist, Gurihiru, is actually an interesting one. It's a duo of two Japanese women who originally tried to use their talents to break into the manga industry. When they submitted their work, the editor said their style was very reminiscent of Pixar, even suggesting they find work in America. They did, and now their art can be seen in DC (like this comic) Marvel (like Gwenpool), and the ATLA comics. I'm not too crazy for superhero comics, but their blend of East and West makes them probably my favorite in the industry right now.
Now that you say it I can see the whole Pixar/Disney look!
I didn't remember them properly, I thought one of the 2 women is a Japanese-american but I'm so glad you've posted this comment I'm going to be more aware and now I'm able to spread the word. Is amazing what they managed, I also love their penname!
Than these two actually did their history on this well because super man did help make the KKK loss most of their power in our history, it was do the efforts of an investigator and the radio talk show crew of the Superman series that put the KKK in its place and for the government to see them as an series threat due to how close they were to raid military bases for weaponry
@@yamataichul That bit of one being Japanese-American does actually sound familiar. You might be right about that.
oh wow, very interesting. Yeah, I noticed the anime-like art right away, but I like it in these cases, because the lines and coloring are very crisp and consistent.

Superman is more human than the actual humanity itself.
That's the whole point of superman and while lex makes a great superman villain lex thinks superman is an alien an invader yet superman is more human than lex himself
Pfff no.
He is just the glorification of all thst is "good" in humans.
I know people hate to hear it, but even the "biggest monsters of humanity" are still humans.
Cause humans are on it self neutral. We are capable of great good, but also (and far more often) great evil.
No, he's just more news worthy than John by the creek helping old lady Wilson with her groceries.
Yeah, he's actually done it before. In a radio show. And the history behind that is quite interesting, too.
Learned about that in comic documentary. Superman literally defeated racism 😎
I'm pretty sure this comic is a direct homage to that story, I remember an Asian American tommy being a character in the original story.
Edit: nvm it’s a direct adaptation with an expanded story, pretty cool!
Sometimes we sleep on great artists without an ounce of awareness of us actually being intrigued by them. Thanks for posting this awesome video!
Appreciate it❤️
This is one of few superhero graphic novels I actually own. It's a straight up masterpiece that perfectly blends together classic and modern Superman while utterly nailing what he's all about.
That flashback to the circus is just genius in how it picks out the two things people laugh most at about Superman, (The glasses being enough to hide his identity and the underwear on the outside) and manages to explain them in such a natural way.
this story kinda shows why superman is a great guy. people think he's some kind of god who came to earth with all the knowledge, but he's just a person like you and me whos lived on earth almost all his life.
I agree
I like how these books take super man back to his literal roots, and still take things as seriously.
This is actually great with the whole not flying thing since Clark can’t just fly away from a superior enemy or chase down a runaway airborne enemy.
im pretty sure he defeated the klan, in real life, thanks to superman on the radio, and some guy that infiltrated the klan, and used their real passwords for it.
Okay, not that last bit. But the rest is all true.
In fact, the story in the comic is a direct adaptation of the radio show, albeit expanded.
I cannot describe how much I love this art style, great video, I love how he starts off not able to fly then learns too, so cool
Appreciate it❤️
Superman is a simple person that just wants to help people he see's himself as an equal and treats people the way he wants to be treated with respect. Because it's his warm heart of empathy and understanding that wins over me. he is more mindful. kind. and compassion. Superman might be overpowered but he knows how to control his powers and respect it.

An update of a storyline from 1946, AND it feels like a modern Elseworld comic (DC Bombshells vibes)!? Love it!
6:24 Having Fu Manchu on a pulp cover is a nice touch, unsettling as it is.
14:50 Dick Grayson and his parents.
I loved it too
Why is it unsettling exactly?
@@justincummings8557 Fu Manchu (created by Sax Rohmer) is an icon of early twentieth century white bigotry and Sinophobia.
He's a Chinese supervillain, master criminal and mad genius (the Yellow Peril personified) whose motivation for being evil boils down to 'he's Chinese, therefore evil'.
He was one of the movie "monsters" of the 1930's, played by Boris Karloff in yellowface.
The cultural influence of Rohmer's creation is VAST: Fu Manchu has inspired the tropes and cliches behind all James Bond villains, as well as every Chinese-looking pop culture villain ever since.

Good to see this comic getting some good press. I couldn't believe how much hate this got when it came out.

@@Blitzo8390I'm Jewish, and I think this concept is utterly ridiculous. The Klan is, or at least was barely a thing for a very long time.

this would probably go in a very different direction if this was created in the 60's 💀💀💀
Nah I think it would be roughly the same coz I think this was based off a radio ting from the 40s that was about super man bashing the kkk although maybe the Asian family would’ve been Japanese instead of Chinese coz back then the Chinese were on the Russian side of the Cold War
The radio story that this comic was based on came out in 1946 and had more or less the same message that racism and xenophobia is bad and that the KKK are evil psychopaths who use superstition and pseudoscience to justify their atrocities.
Superman has always been progressive, even if that took different forms throughout the years.
it was made in the 40s, originally. Aired on the radio. It was a massive hit

Gene Lueng Yang did an amazing job with modernizing this story through his graphic novel. I ordered enough for my classroom and we read it together. My students loved it!
True story: The radio show from the 40s this graphic novel is based upon actually did gut the plan by making people understand what that evil group is all about.
It sounds like im listening to a Anti-Drug PSA, its a platitude at this point
One of the few comics I’ve actually read in it’s entirety - honestly, it just makes WAY too much sense for Superman, the literal alien who has come to love his home like everybody else in it, going up against the very antithesis of that notion, and taking this younger, more vulnerable version of him and using the KKK as a the push to get him to accept himself and thus become stronger than ever… It’s just downright adorable.
Plus the supporting cast are great and my FAVOURITE comic artist (also the one behind the best Gwenpool comics) returns. One of the best Superman stories, 100%, even if it’s a bit different than his usual MO.
You know, I’m suddenly thinking about that scene from Django unchained

I love this story ❤ you tell it so well
As nasty and vile as the KKK was and they were vile and worthy of Superman smashing. It's only really insensitive within in the context that you can't have Superman smash away your problems fictionally. It also wouldn't be appropriate in real life within the confines of the comic book either. A Space Alien with God Like power can't tell people how to think and how to feel... even if those things are for good. A Lot of better Superman writers realize this. It's what makes Superman interesting... people hate him both irl and in comic books because of his neigh unstoppable power wrapped up in a flawless conscience but the issue inherent is that Superman can't MAKE people be better with his great power. He needs them to reach that conclusion on their own.
How much prep time do you guys think racism will need to beat Superman?
