Finally, a comic that does Superman justice, to who he is as a character and a hero. Granted, not the best Superman story ever told, but miles above anything written today.
@@johnnywantyoudead5113 I'm partial to the Death of Superman event, myself. It helps that I had the trade of it from a very young age, and the trade did a good job of bringing in tie-ins that showed just how THOROUGHLY FUCKED everyone was against Doomsday. I will never forget the feeling of reading how Doom ripped through every hero thrown at him, each only serving to make him better by removing his restraints slowly, only for the Blue Boy Scout to throw the first punch to make him truly pause. And then to immediately go to Supes' internal monologue about how he was tights-browningly scared because everything this monster was throwing at him hurt to a degree he had never felt before. I am protective of that story and how it was told to this day, and is a major reason why I hate Batman V Superman as much as I do.
@@johnnywantyoudead5113 I can acknowledge that it has some good writing in spots, but I will never forgive it for jumping the gun on Doomsday. Making him a last minute threat does a disservice to that character. It would have been like if the first avengers movie was the entirety of the Thanos conflict. Too much, too soon.
Lois Lane was clueless for decades, being fooled by useless glasses and a different hair part. Lois not figuring out his powers is well within believability
There's a whole breakdown of why Superman as Clark is effective. >_> I can't remember what it is called, but look around it might change your opinion or might not. It is still interesting though.
Pacing is certainly off between the transitions of the stories. But, that ending exchange between Superman and the uncle? Fuck, that just screamed Superman to me and I absolutely loved it. I also agree that the girl shouldn't have explained to superman about his powers. If the girl had to be involved they could have used Lois to be the bridge between Superman and the girl. So Lois is the one that notices how the girl says she only gets motion sick in vehicles, which could spark Lois considering the way she feels when carried by him. Overall sounds like a good story.
It's less 'stay in your lane' and more 'read what you're criticizing', which you obviously did here, which is likely why this video was good, if lightly dusted with salt.
1st Amendment, say literally anything you want. Even though I disagree with you sometimes, I still enjoy the channel. Also, I love how RDR2 made the Klan a huntable faction. But even better is if you actually just stand there and watch them, they always fuck up and kill themselves by being stupid.

No subtext of what may have been and no subtext based upon our understanding of the amendment; just words. I didn’t think this was particularly woke, not compared others you’ve reviewed. Stomping on the Klan is just good old-fashioned fun, like stomping Nazis, or Imperial stormtroopers. I do think you were a bit harsh on Chuck, though, because he’s just a kid. I’d have less sympathy if he was 30, but “I don’t want to believe the people I love are monsters” is a pretty normal reaction for a 15-year-old.
Yeah. I don't think the criticism on chuck was valid either. Any kid wouldn't want to believe someone they love is a monster, his reaction in complete neglect makes sense.
Exactly. He was just a kid who just found out that his _family_ are monsters who tried to kill his friends because of their race, that's not going to be an easy thing for any _child_ to digest.
I don't think he was too harsh, the story does pretty well by Chuck, he ends up being forgiven and with none of the endless guilt and debt that the left like to spout about in spite of starting out as an asshole and going along with his uncle the terrorist for most of the book. He was taking part in some evil stuff, imagine how you might react if you learned your son attended a communist of fascist rally where people were hurt and buildings were burned. 15-year-olds aren't adults, but they definitely are responsible for their actions. The book gives him a similar treatment to Agent Kallus, from Star Wars Rebels, it's overly optimistic and hopeful, but I think that's not out of place for a children's show or comic. JSJ's comments about him seem similar to his comments about some contrivances surrounding the kids; they aren't wrong, but they also seem intended towards a more mature audience than the comic is probably designed for.
Agreed. Even abuse victims don't realize that they're being abused or those that abuse them are bad when it comes to friends, family and people you love.
The connection between the Lee's story and Superman re/discovering his powers could have been linked better with a story of the girl being afraid to show off who she really is. She holds herself back. She doesn't want to put forth her full effort to stand out. More interaction with her during the story and Superman slowly coming to the realization that he's holding himself back just like her. There you go... first idea off the top of my head. Stories are connected better.
My idea for that is for them to have used Lois and let her do her whole reporter thing. Acting as the bridge between Superman and the girl. It would be easier if she was investigating the Klan and by doing so got led to that family. Plus, she can hop in on Superman stuff to with learning more about himself. It'll also help with that one odd moment when they randomly decided to finally use her.
YEah i think that was the point of Lee being the secondary protagonist rather than Lois, But i believe the story could do a more complete job at developing her arc. It just feels incomplete.
Fun fact about the Klan: Their cloaks and hoods were stolen from the Catholic Church, they still wear those things in Spain for certain religious beliefs.
Which is dripping with irony considering how anti-Catholic they are. Also isn’t it rather hypocritical of them to set a cross on fire while having the nerve to represent Christian values. I mean seriously, you wouldn’t set your Bible on fire so why the heck would you set a cross on fire. It just seems somewhat hypocritical when you get down to it. Know what I mean?

It's a nice throwback to the old Superman comics. It's not perfect but we get to see Superman be Superman which is rare. Asking you to give the same treatment you would to a review to any politics is not trying to silence you.

Doesn't matter how hard one tries to deny it or justify it, it is wrong. I also love how this story shows that racists do not realize that they are racist, or how evil people do not realize how evil they are. Also on Jimmy: he might be 16. It was pretty a normal thing to have some regular work and extracurricular activities like leading scouts of baseball team etc. were highly encouraged during those times (especially in US). It is also one of 'very early stories' in Sups timeline so likely Jimmy just got his gig in newspaper and so my bet is: he is 16 y.o. here.
25:00 Absolutely. They're also still his family. He has known them his entire life - unless these people are hideous cartoonish super-villains that do nothing but talk about how much they hate the non-whites, Chuck is going to have a very complex and deeply rooted connection to them - even before you add in the additional hard-wired part of them being his parents. His entire concept of self is going to be heavily dependent on his relationship to his parents and the things they taught him. And now he's just learned that on a fundamental level everything he thought he knew about them might be wrong. And he's a _child._ A teenager specifically, so to some extent he's likely to have more to stake his identity on, but that's still a really big one. Chuck is honestly a pretty realistic depiction of how that cognitive dissonance might play out for a person: you _know_ what they did is deeply, horribly wrong, but on a subconscious level you still love these people because they're your family, and in a way a part of who you are. Completely overturning that is incredibly distressing, so the brain actively tries to rationalize a way out of having to do it. And it can fucking _hurt._ So instead the brain tries to make excuses to soften the blow, to salvage as much as it can. And a lot of this _will_ sound like attempts to make it sound like justifications. Tommy's reaction is honestly just as valid, because he is also a kid, and as far as he can tell Chuck just wants to stay racist - especially given all the shit he's been through and the fact that he has none of the attachments to Chuck's parents to stop him from thinking they're evil. I'm only bringing this up because it sounds like you're treating this bit like the writer is trying to _defend_ the racists. 26:40 Because the entire theme of the story is centered on the sense of alienation and isolation racism can create, both for the people who are victimized by it and the people who genuinely believe it, and coming from Lois there wouldn't be any weight to the delivery of this scene. Don't get me wrong, the logic behind it is weak, it's ham-fisted and more than a bit shoehorned, but the main reason it's there is to connect the theme to Superman and use him as a lens to try to make a point in a way the reader might not have considered. The awkwardness and illogic of the scene is a surface-level issue; the actual substance is in why the scene is here at all. It can be argued that the substance isn't enough to justify the illogical and awkward framing, but to do that you have to acknowledge the goal. How the fuck'd you read the title 'Superman Smashes the Klan' and expect something that _wasn't_ going to put the subtext and themes before solid logic and believability?
Superman Smashes the Klan is a complex story, dealing with themes of racism and identity on many different levels. However, Roberta is not alone in this struggle.
Ideologies and hatred have always existed, even now days people i know are still a little racist, mostly older folk but still, racism is definitely real. I would also like to point out that there were no gun control laws in America until after the passage of the 13th Amendment. Gun control laws, historically and by their very purpose, are racist. Every American citizen who can legally do so has a right to arm themselves and defend themselves, their family, and their property, and their community, regardless of race, culture, gender, or any other factor. This is just a statement of fact and should not be controversial.

You know, I was *just* listening to that Clan of the Fiery Cross episode, and I'll finish the last part tomorrow. Lemme tell ya: There wasn't any Klan kryptonite weapons in the original radio show story. That being said, the Unity House was featured in a previous radio show story, where anti-american agents were manipulating a gang of youths to sabotage it in order to turn people against each other. Edit: Already I saw deviations from the radio show story, particularly with Chuck Riggs and Superman: In the story, Superman only found out who Chuck Riggs was and his significance when Clark Kent put out an open letter on the Daily Planet newspaper to the kid who tipped the Daily Planet off about Tommy Lee, and that open letter was posted *after* Jimmy Olsen and Perry were kidnapped by the Klan following Perry's posting of a 1000 dollar (later 5000 dollar) bounty for identifying members of the Klan of the Fiery Cross. Edit 2: Superman already had his X-Ray vision in the radio show. Edit 3: Frankly... I think this video's just JSG nitpicking a la CinemaSins, and that's a sin to entertainment.
I think he had X-Ray vision in the comics at the time. I don't know if he was using "the heat from my X-Ray vision" to burn things at the time, a precursor to his actual heat vision, but like JSG said he could still leap 1/8th of a mile from his first story. Also, was Atom Man in the radio show? The only Atom Man I know was in the second Superman serial, Lex Luthor in a disguise lined with lead.

@@GlareanLiebertine Admittedly I haven't really gotten far in my listening of the Superman radio show (I've been listening to The Blue Beetle during walks...which I hope to start doing again when the nights are a bit warmer) but it's not like the show didn't get things wrong. The Kents, who show up in this story, weren't part of his origin unless they added that later as a retcon. Guy is right that he should at least be leaping the tall building instead of climbing it (I don't know what the show did in the original story) but if he could fly then that makes this even dumber just so they could have the little Chinese girl tell Superman how to use his powers despite (according to the review) not showing any kind of science prodigy skills. I don't know if that's woke necessarily but it is rather silly if not stupid.
Always powerful to see people wrongly led by evil being given a shot at redemption or realizing the error of their ways. Chuck is understandable as he's beginning to question other motives and sides to what his family believes. It's hard to cope with needing to completely re-evaluate your entire life's viewpoints, especially when you realize how severely damaging it is to others. He started out as a bully, but I think it's showing how he's become lost when he sees how much more extreme that mentality has gone with his Uncle. White supremacists love to claim they're "protecting what they love" but it's hypocritical when most of their actions are done in service of hate. I think the comic does a good job with Chuck showing how a white supremacist begins to react when they realize their values are more-so rooted in hate. I don't think it's odd it would mirror "stages of grief" either.
I'm actually surprised you weren't aware of the original radio show and this topic, it's probably one of the more interesting subjects as far as Superman trivia goes.
Before we even get started! Guy, much love bro. This is your channel, this is your content, you talk about what ever you want. Your "lane" is yours to choose and to travel in. No, no buts. Full stop. Love you Guy. Lord knows I don't agree, but Love you.
Y'know, one of the things I like about Yang's work is that he can tackle things like racism without being preachy. Even the klansmen were humanized. American Born Chinese is a good example of this, and Boxers & Saints handled the Boxer Rebellion quite well. As a Superman comic, I think it's safe to say that Yang gets Superman. That's the problem with a lot of woke comics; they just don't get the heroes they're portraying, while Yang is clearly a superhero fan. My favorite part was when the klansman thought he died and the first thing he saw was a Jewish man, and was scared to find out Jews were in Heaven. Btw, The Shadow Hero is another one of his excellent comics. It's an origin story to the first Asian superhero in comics. It's one of the more original superhero origins I've read.
I’m a big fan of Gene Luen Yang, and I’ll have to pick up this trade at some point. Weaving together different storylines is one of his trademarks, as in American Born Chinese and Boxers and Saints. It’s a shame it doesn’t quite work here.
Damn the art alone sold me on this book. Great find. I wonder if the pacing issues are from it being a radio drama. One episode dealing with Superman, then one with the clan, then one with the kids, and it's only when you put them all together that it's jarring. Either way I think I'll pick this one up.
1. Didn't know the klan was trademarked, learn something new every day. 2. I also like the art style, it's in that nice in-between of cartoony and realism. Wish there was more of it! 3. And yeah, what is it with people not calling parents in these stories?? Can't even make an excuse about the parents just not being home.

JSG has some personal problems with conseratives and it seems hebwants to own them at any opportunity even if it makes him look as dumb as some woke leftists
26:06 Although I agree with you that some parts of the story doesn't feel right, I really like that scene with the girl. In fact, I think THIS would not be only a good conflict for Superman, but also a great way to stablish why his powers changed. The disadvantage, of course, is that this would only work on the "neighborhood friend" phase of Superman. Of course, it would be a "must" for him to go full power when stronger villains came around. I also loved the "bonds" theme in the story. It makes the villains sounds more serious, not just cannon-fodder caricatures.
11:18 would be amazing that in 50 years they do the same with CRT (the right amount of melanin supremacy, the group of people that "can't" be reeeee) and the message from the infinite letters.
Kind of questionable for the time its release, but nice to see a callback that was pretty serious because the story was written around Mr. Stetson who went undercover in the klan and was trying to warn the government because the chapter he was in was planning on raiding a federal armory, and Kelloggs offered to advertise the show so it could be broadcasted with the radio's approval.
The comic seems cool (I'm also a fan of that clean, crisp artstyle), and I actually didn't have a problem with a couple of the things you did, JSG. For example (like someone else said below) I assumed the Asian girl was talking in her native language when her speech became fluent (but that it was translated into English for our benefit), and Superman's fortress existing undetected at the bottom of a lake seems plausible to me. Some lakes are deep. (And it's fiction, so that lake can be as deep as the writer wants it to be.)
I liked the anime-isk art style and as much of an OBVIOUS reason they made it, knowing its based on the radio shows, I gave it a try and now I would like to see more comic adaptations of the Superman Radio Show
A bit Educational yes, Woke no. Because This story is too well written.. In A Woke story the writer would've had Superman prison R••ed (that happened...) and the writer would've had a character say something harmless: "Sure thing dude" Person receiving said harmless statement: "Hey you bigot! My Pronouns are they/them get it right!" (Cue an hour long conversation as to why the person who just said "Sure thing dude" is a bigot...) and about a dozen token characters (if a character is: this hero but this it's tokenize.) who've taken the "Mantle" of an established character.. and it would've included story threads that contradict established lore...
If you want to stay on track with the actual story you could have simply said that the Klansmen where just turned into parodies of normal conservatives, like the most basic harmless beliefs like gun control or some other nonsense.

Anime and manga make many people human. Anime and manga save the world. Engaging stories, likable characters, pleasing visuals, and nice sound. Japan makes characters serious and/or cute as possible and enjoyable as possible. Personality, skill, and purpose that relates to people. America makes characters fat and/or ugly as possible and disrespectful as possible. Politically preaching and bullying offends people. Anime and manga need to be appreciated as art forms like music and others, not as political nor marketing tools. Art is what makes people human. Art is a creative expression and freedom of speech. Politics is full of hypocrisy and is trying to control people against their will. People are allowed to have a taste for what they like-no harm done. That is what I mean when I said art makes people human. Liking rock music makes people human too. A lot of us love rock music too. The creators and animators deserve better pay as always. $2,000+ a month should be the minimum-the studios will get their money from sales. If the studios are still murdering animators, we are just going to give our money to only animators and creators. Story structure, character personality and skill, and fitting visuals and sounds are important than only having females, same-sex-loving women, male-clothed women, and political ideology messaging. You can have a great series with even homogeneous characters. That is why Japan succeeds. "Diverse" means "range of differences and ideas". Anime and manga can do horror, sci-fi, action, thriller, romance, sports, superhero, drama, slice of life, erotica, history, even random subjects like cooking. Viewers can relate to characters and stories different from themselves and their lives. Sailor Moon and Pretty Cure are loved by boys despite girls only being magical heroes, Sailor Uranus and Sailor Neptune who are in love with each other have showed more that they are willing to help fight by the Inner Sailor Senshi's side. People love the Lucky Star manga since the characters and themes are relatable and understandable. We love Macross 7 because the rock music makes the action scenes fun that we love Basara. Same-sex-lovers (homosexuals) can love different-sex-lovers (heterosexuals) as characters. This is why anime and manga are winning. Focusing on current US politics and events will make any series outdated that in a few years and other countries, no one will understand them.
@@LuigiTheMetal64 or comic book creators can make up NEW CHARACTERS and a NEW COMIC BOOK COMPANY that still do the SAME THING THAT MANGA DOES. I know, shocking isn't it.
@@LuigiTheMetal64 Do you have experience with manga. I have been reading manga for years. I am trying to learn how to create my own comics and graphic novels. I also am dabbling into novels. Do you have any advice?
A lot of the themes in this comic is similar to the situations we’re dealing with today. It’s kinda crazy that a lot of woke people are exactly like chuck.
The first iteration, definitely, but the 2nd and current iterations are pure Republicans. Same as how dems used to be the party for evangelicals before Jimmy Carter.
Chuck had it the hardest trying to grow away from his role models and adult influences which so many children rely on for a sense of morality and see as heros. Its a lot harder for kids to break the idealized vision of their role models they have and I think having him not change immediately is a good showing his world was that and it be a disservice to have him break the first time. There is also how he broke the fantasy he got to know someone he's suppose to hate. I still think intermingling is the best chance we are going to have with overcoming racism as one it is much harder to hate someone you know and two it helps clear negative stereotypes as you have a direct source. Its why I hate these isolation ideas like black only safe spaces or mono communities That is only going to bring less interactions and more reliance on what they hear and told. Lets not forget cultural appropriation bs where people can like other parts of a culture and use it as it is stealing and racist like thaT cant be common ground for again more interactions. Sorry for the rant Love the work you do JSG glad you keep your own opinions.
Glad you have a sense of humor about everything. I don’t agree with you on everything but I can still enjoy your content. The book looks good. If I see it I will pick it up.
I want to know why “Birth of a Nation” is STILL taught in film school. There are many other options that teach the same techniques and styles without the theme.
Because it was the first one and was a major moment of change in the film industry. The film is horrific, but that doesn’t change it being a landmark in the film industry.
The reason you don't get the harder language of the era is two reasons. 1 - FCC Broadcast rules of the day. 2 - Laws targeting Klan activity. It would be like those reporters trying to discover how easy it is to build an illegal gun and end up breaking the law in the process.
btw, I don't know if this is out of place at the moment, but I just wanted to say that you channel was one of the reasons I got into comic books, and I have enjoyed your content for a fair while now. If you ever decided to, I would really enjoy watching a review of a Hellboy comic, I would love to see your take on it! keep on doing what you're doing, JSG
From the sound of things the story seems to be all over the place at first glance. Nothing that extra reads can't fix in case you miss something. Other than that I am legitimately shocked. DC Comics released a book between 2014 and current year that was...good? Great art style that catches your attention? No "woke garbage" infesting the book? Well it took place in the mid 40s so of course it won't. And most importantly, the author actually understands the character he's writing for and doesn't preach to the readers? I can't believe I'm saying this, but I actually bought this book. The big 2 have lost so many customers over the years that the indies and manga moved in and ate their lunch. But this? I made an exception for this.
Not sure if this is intended to be a YA story or not but it's leagues ahead of the other ones so hopefully it sets some sort of standard going forward. It actually seems like a good, albeit wonky, read and I think the art really works for this.
I LOVED this comic. The art was amazing, the 1940's setting was great, the characterisation of Superman was on fucking point, the REFERENCES! Oh my god the references! The fact that it brought Supes back to his original powerset while ALSO explaining his later powers was great. It had it's issues with formatting and story-telling structure but overall it's a great story.
I think he missed the point with Chuck, he was having a hard time with the realisation that his family is evil.
Negation is a normal part of it.
The first coping mechanism is always denial. That's just how we humans work
I guess just a guy was too busy composing to notice
Yeah it's kinda of hard to see the people who raised you be bad people atleast he realized it's wrong but he's also a kid what's he supposed to do run away cause mom and uncle don't like minorities that's not very logical for a post WW2 America.
Finally, a comic that does Superman justice, to who he is as a character and a hero. Granted, not the best Superman story ever told, but miles above anything written today.
A good classic story will always be good. Doesn't have to be high art, just good.

Lois Lane was clueless for decades, being fooled by useless glasses and a different hair part. Lois not figuring out his powers is well within believability
I think that was the last funny SNL sketch, where the Rock played Clark Kent and everyone used that line Superman, who ever that is, then snickers.

Glasses are actually pretty effective. Superman also changes his posture and body language in his Clark Persona.

You know as JSG was reviewing it I thought the story was all over the place.

Well I think that you can be in any lane you wanna be in, but I always enjoy your comic reviews.
That someone has a different opinion than you just means he's his own person. Talking about sides/lanes is just childish. Not calling this comic "woke thrash" doesn't make JSG a left winger just like calling Quanza Osajyefo's comics "bad" doesn't make him a right winger.
It only means he had his own opinions.

Also on Jimmy: he might be 16. It was pretty a normal thing to have some regular work and extracurricular activities like leading scouts of baseball team etc. were highly encouraged during those times (especially in US).
It is also one of 'very early stories' in Sups timeline so likely Jimmy just got his gig in newspaper and so my bet is: he is 16 y.o. here.

Absolutely.
And it can fucking _hurt._
So instead the brain tries to make excuses to soften the blow, to salvage as much as it can.
26:40
Because the entire theme of the story is centered on the sense of alienation and isolation racism can create, both for the people who are victimized by it and the people who genuinely believe it, and coming from Lois there wouldn't be any weight to the delivery of this scene.
The book follows Roberta as she manages the complicated process of being herself in a new environment that's not very welcoming to those who are different. However, Roberta is not alone in this struggle.

Ideologies and hatred have always existed, even now days people i know are still a little racist, mostly older folk but still, racism is definitely real. The book has some issues, but all-in-all it was decent. You are right about the smaller font, just enough to be annoying. If you get a chance to listen to the audio drama, I recommend it. "Clan of the Fiery Cross" It is on YT.
Birth of a Nation was the first movie ever screened in the White House, for Woodrow Wilson, the man who resegregated the entire federal government. He was the man responsible for even resegregating the military. Wilson typically doesn't suffer any of the negative reputation that a lot of past politicians rightfully do, but he should.
I can only give you one Like . . . which seems unfair, when compared to the sheer quality of this comment.

@@ShadowWingTronix I don't know, only started actively listening to the radio show serials around the dark side of the moon story (which I'll save that rant for another time, but I'll leave it with this: HOW THE *FUCK* DOES THE DARK SIDE OF THE MOON HAVE PROPER ATMOS?!)
But I know for a fact Superman had the power of X-Ray Vision and flight in the radio show at least.
Still hold my conviction that JSG's just frivolously nitpicking in this video though.
Episode 2 just has Kal-El on Earth as an adult, given his Clark Kent identity by a scientist and his grandson he saves from a train accident.
Who tf asked you to be nice to the klan?
I don't think anyone would give a shit about Clark decking a Yahtzee out.
"They find out there's one thing different about him and they turn on him" - that's better narrative interweaving by JSG than Yang.
I’m a big fan of Gene Luen Yang, and I’ll have to pick up this trade at some point. Weaving together different storylines is one of his trademarks, as in American Born Chinese and Boxers and Saints. It’s a shame it doesn’t quite work here.

Although I agree with you that some parts of the story doesn't feel right, I really like that scene with the girl.
I feel like a 1940s Superman would've said "shut up kid" and ignored the girl

People conveniently forget just how much society depends on Superhero stories.

@@nevermore7285I still think any student should be able to opt out without penalty to their grade.
Don't stay in your lane, YSM. Free thinkers are rare and I appreciate you taking a principled stand on things.
The art looks amazing! I'll add this to my list. It reminds me of Darwin Cook's style
This is how it's done! I loved this comic!
. seeing actual honest to goodness decency of the true superman in his perfect moments like this one. he right here represents everything they hate.
Not sure if this is intended to be a YA story or not but it's leagues ahead of the other ones so hopefully it sets some sort of standard going forward. It actually seems like a good, albeit wonky, read and I think the art really works for this.
I don't know why I love this art style so much
I LOVED this comic.
I like listening to your voice man keep it up. You're a chill dude.
