This is Superman, what Snyder never understood or just refused to see. He's the best of humanity and he challenges them to be what he sees in them because as this comic so beautifully shows he loves humanity and is proud no matter how many mistakes are made.

@@newagerise4638 I don't hate Snyder and I'm not ignorant, it's both petty and a weak arguement to claim I do. The best Superman stories both in comics and adaptation are ones that challenge his light heartedness and morality, Man of Steel was lazy and likely made as much as it did due to the action and spectacle. Superman vs the elite and Superman man of tomorrow are vastly superior films because they understand the core of the character, Snyder wanted to make his movies dark and edgy but compromised the core of the characters to achieve this. That is why I dislike man of steel, it's a poor representation of the character - a weakness of writing born of misunderstanding the character.

Except he can be very boring at times.
Not every Superman story has him flying around smiling and crying at the world, just being wholesome and such. He has stories where he has doubt about his place in the world, where he’s angry, depressed ect.
And IMO the best Superman media outside of comics isn’t Reeves flying around being a boyscout.
It’s Smallville(yeah he wasn’t Superman), JLU Cadmus Arc, Superman & Lois, Zack Snyder’s Superman. I like when Superman has an edge to him.
People need to get over themselves, these characters have many different interpretations.
Some people like the overly joyful Superman, some like Superman having a bit of an edge.
Even with both companies shoving the Multiverse down everyone’s throat, you still have people saying this is how Superman should be and should never be deviated from. This is the perfect Superman.

You know I'm really glad I've been seeing a recent resurgence of interest in Superman. I think it partially maybe because we're just exposed to so much bad news nowadays. Climate change, poverty, war, and just the overall knowledge that so many of our politicians and leaders are failing us really bums people out. It's so easy to just give up hope and become a doomer. But Superman reminds us that even he can't solve every problem or save everyone, but he always tries his best because he knows that if we all give up on fighting for truth, justice, and the good in people, nothing will get better for certain. And if we all could be like Superman in terms of morals and acting upon those morals, the world would be so much better. That's why his character is timeless and one we should all try to emulate.

The "super" in Superman isn't supposed to be from his super powers, but rather from the heart of gold that makes him what he is. He is the symbol of the ideal human, the best of what humanity has to offer.

I have to say something like this actually gives me hope not just in humanity like one of those star man edits but also in comics. It’s a simple, anthology comic done almost entirely in red and blue and seems to keep to simple almost cozy stories. It’s a work of artistic and writing skill that seems to get buried under the unending event comics, 41 flavors of new gritty Batman (tm), and the latest excuse for hero’s to fight each other instead of crime.

This is superman and why I love him. Take away the cape, the tights, the muscles, and all the heavenly powers bestowed upon him and what are you left with?
A man who would embrace you in the coldest winter just to give you a moment of warmth. A spark of hope in your darkest moment. A light that shines brighter and has endured far more than anything any individual, company or idea can possibly ever imagine taking away.
A dream, an aspiration, a hope not just for a better tomorrow but a better us.
    Thank you again.

I've never had a comic affect me as much as that chapter did. The first time I read it I was full-on ugly crying at how beautiful it was. To this day it still chokes me up to read. All of Red and Blue is incredible, right up there with All Star, Man of Tomorrow, Kingdom Come, etc. but that one chapter is elevated so far beyond just being a comic for me.

I want you to know you’re showing some good talent for video essays. Really good editing, great execution of thesis, and a fabulous compare/contrast without bluntly saying it.
If continuing this, I recommend writing your scripts out if you don’t, getting either a better mic or better recording room, and consider just getting more clips than you need on any subject and then when you’re good to edit, you have more than you need for any one segment. Selection/options is key for including clips.
Best of luck. I’m proud of you. You’re special.

That is a beautiful story indeed. And I’m glad someone else loves it as I do.
That said, there’s no need to put what Snyder did, down. Snyder’s Superman was not dark or edgy. His WORLD was dark and edgy much like ours. And Clark is faced with very tough choices in those movies.
Yet at his core, Snyder’s Superman is hopeful, kind, heroic. He looks for guidance, from his father, from his mother, from Lois, from a priest. Even when he meets Batman, he tries to talk things out with him first. it’s a Superman at his beginnings. He struggles, loses his father and keeps trying to do the right thing.
Even the possible Apokolips on Earth Superman is a Superman that was pushed to the edge. Zod pushed him to the edge as well.
Was everything that Snyder did perfect? No. He made the same Superman we all know but in a realistic setting. I’m sick and tired of people putting Snyder down when I saw with my own eyes that he loved Superman and had a path, a journey for him but you all wanted a realized Superman from the get go.

Superman shouldn’t be conflicted by anger and rage. He’s the best person who also has powers. Yes he can leap tall buildings but that’s not the best part of him, it’s his goodness and his incorruptible nature. He is hope in a silly blue outfit.

  • @bigscarytigermonster

So glad somebody else gets it.
Superman tackles pretty much everything and is considered overpowered - but his level of antagonists is damn-near cosmic level in strength/power or have abilities that can change the world as we know it. That's the conflict part of it.
Superman isn't just the "super." He's more the "man" than he's accredited. It's his heart and compassion that makes Kal-El one of my favourite heroes for the past 50+ years.
As for killing Zod? He did that in the comics, too. It's the why he did it and what it did to him, afterwards that counts.
He may have a "no killing" rule, but he learned a hard lesson that there are times when you need to do things you are against if the innocent are going to survive. War taught me that part.
I can only strive to be half the man this fictional character is written, but I think it's a good standard to uphold.

The confrontation with Lex at the end is perfect, it sums up why they're perfect foils of each other.
They're both people with gifts that mark them a super in some respect. But Lex is so caught up in his own superiority and need to prove that to the rest of the world, that he couldn't get out of his own way long enough to do anything that mattered. Whereas Kal see's the value in everything and commits himself to the service of others, because that's what matters.

I heard this somewhere else, but it's actually thematically appropriate that Superman is usually the one who ends up beating Darkseid in the end. Not necessarily because he's the strongest, but because there's just something special about the abstract concept of evil being beaten by the good in all of us. Because Superman *is* goodness. He's the type of person who would save a kitten from a tree, answer Christmas cards from strangers, and save the world all in a single afternoon. Not because he's strong enough or fast enough, but because he's compassionate enough.
That is Superman. That is Clark Kent.

Red from Oberly Sarcastic Productions made a Trope Talk on Grimdark that is relevant to this video. In it, she talks about optimism and pessimism at a universal scale; optimism says that humanity can become better, and pessimism says it can never. She says that optimism will always have it hear because it can and has been at least improved.
Superman is _the_ optimist and only stops being it when a writer is trying to make a point, one made when he kills. Almost every universe with a Superman that kills has no “good guy” because of it.

It's an absolute shame how they've been treating superman comics in recent years and they could have fixed this through Jon but they didn't.

This is something that Zack Snyder and all of his dumb fanboys will never understand about Superman. To me he's always a kind, loving and caring superheroes of all time. He's the embodiment of hope, while Zack tarnished that by making into this edgy and lonesome character. He's not a God that Zack thinks he supposed to be, but a man who uses his gifts to help the people around him. Hearing him saying "I Love You" to Earth. Really shows what he's supposed to be.
