I always imagined Spongebob being in his mid 20’s. Old enough to be noticeably more mature and responsible than a high school student like Pearl but still younger and more energetic than a middle aged person like Squidward
Yeah so did I 😅it just seems to make sense his be in his mids 20s.

The first film technically is the end of the series, as that was the original intention of the film. Great video by the way.
An argument could be made that there really isn’t a continuity to this series, but an even better argument could be made that as long as the new episodes funnel down and eventually lead to the first movie then they can make as many episodes.
Basically the timeline is episode 1: spongebob is hired to the krusty krab
Then the rest of the franchise happens.
Then the first movie at the very end of the timeline.
You already said it before i could at least someone else had the same mindset as me
I really hope the first movie was not the end of the series because that would mean Plankton never redeemed himself at all.
@@TheVeryLastOne yeah, I really like Plankton’s character, and I always like when he’s portrayed in better or sympathetic lights in episodes (although his appearance in the movie is still awesome, and villainous Plankton is usually pretty fun too)

I sorta always just accepted that he’s perpetually in his 20s or maybe early 30s at the latest (like how most cartoon characters never age) which is why he lives on his own and is clearly pretty independent but everyone also treats him like a kid. That wouldn’t really make sense if he was like 50. Especially because a plot point in the movie is that he’s “just a kid”.
You can have the mentality of a child and still be an older person like 'ol Squarepants.
I agree. I personally never try to overthink it, since cartoons are infamous for not caring about continuity. Especially cartoons aimed at kids.

"Spongebob is meant to live for thousands of years"
with how popular he has been over the last 20 years, he might.
So technically the whole, "Mr. Krabs saying that Sponge bob's a kid" is really Bull-crap.
I mean.. Krabs is pretty old too
He’s a kid mentally.
He meant he was too childish.
Krabs is like almost 80.So anyone under 50 is a kid to him lol
It's not. Kid can mean a lot of things. It doesn't just mean child , it means a young person as well. I mean, to Mr. Krabs, spongebob is a kid because he's very likely much younger than he is. I mean Krabs is even old enough to be figure father to SpongeBob. So it's understandable why he will call him a kid. Also he could have said he's a kid because he has a childish personality I guess. Either way stop taking this phase too literally guys. I don't think it meant hes a kid as in he's a literal child. I don't think that was what the message movie was trying to say at all.

I prefer to use my own "Pineapple Theory". A pineapple takes roughly 36 hours to decompose and become uninhabitable underwater.
Therefore, given his house is still standing, Spongey is not much older than 36 hours old. Given how starkly younger he looked when he moved in, to the pineapple shows that he ages astonishingly quickly and could only have been born a few hours prior.
But what would explain the day/night cycle?
@Javier Lugo It’s not a fake showed in multiple episodes
@@birdboy16 ikr
Actually, your theory is incorrect. In "Lost" episode, there was "(forgot how many) days later" transition and his pineapple was still alive.
What about him winning Employee of the month 1/2 years?
Spongebob is definitely an adult who is a kid at heart on his happiness and ideas. But it definitely shows that the series is for everyone.
Well, in the first movie he has 374 employee of the month awards. That comes to 31 YEARS and 2 months. Depending on how old he was when he first started working at the Krusty Krab, Spongebob should be a minimum of least 49 years old possibly.
Ntm spongebob is called a “kid” in the first movie by everyone despite no one doing this before or since
Also apparently sandy is going to be in the camp coral show though the writers have claimed there will be an explanation preventing this from contradicting their meeting in the show
*brain explodes*
My method for calculating his age is simple, add 18 + 20. To give some further context, you have to be at least 16 to get a job, and at least 18 to own your own home. So if we assume that SpongeBob is the bare minimum age he needs to own a home, then he would be 18 and all you need to do is add 20 which would get us to 38. The reason we add 20 is because the show itself is 20 years old, and in SpongeBob's big birthday blowout we can hear a fish passing and conversation say, "20 years old". So I believe he is 38 years of age.
But that's just a theory A STRIDER THEORY
Yes
Thanks for watching and...
Ayyyy
If this comment doesn’t get a heart then I don’t know what will
I think he's 18. He's old enough to live on his own but still young enough to act childish.
Even 20 something year old can be childish you know, not just 18 years old.
So Spongebob is in his 30's, I didn't know how old he can be and I thought he would be older than 32 because of the episodes and movies that went by to the age he is because of those passed years of episodes and the movies I could be wrong. He is a man that is a kid in his heart.

In Sponge on the Run, we find out that Gary met SpongeBob at a summer camp. SpongeBob is possibly a 7 to 10 year old kid and Gary is a kitten. Gary would have to be really old in 2020. So, how old is Gary supposed to be?
The show is inconsistent with how and when Spongebob got Gary. For instance in “have you seen this snail?” there are pictures of spongebob with Gary when he was a child. However in eps like “treats!” Spongebob is shown adopting baby Gary from a pound when he’s an adult
Just another thing they’re loose abt

Spongebob is smart and mature, it’s just he isn’t very smart when he’s hanging out with Patrick especially when he’s convinced to do something that’ll land him in jail
And anybody is a child at heart so nothing wrong with that (unless my mum hears and says that it isn’t true)
I believe they made Spongebob’s (as well as the rest of the cast’s) DOB ambiguous on purpose. There was a quote from either Hillenburg or another member of the team (which I can’t exactly remember at this time) but it went along the lines of: they made the show with the intention that the age and sexual orientation of the characters (traits they believed to be superficial for the cartoon) would not be revealed at anytime in the series’ run.
I do think that traits like the ones that were omitted can and do contribute to deep and enjoyable characters, but I can also see why they chose NOT to include them. Not including them can be perceived as giving them a sense of timelessness or purity, where any demographic can appreciate these characters with their personalities being front and center.
So yeah, THAT’S why none of the characters in Spongebob Squarepants have known ages (aside from obvious jokes and/or visual gags).
Phantom Strider doing analysis videos? This is not a development I ever expected, but I'm not complaining either. Nice work on presenting this! ^^
Considering real life sponges tend to live for OVER HUNDREDS OF YEARS, he's probably still in his child years.

great video! you should start doing more cartoon theories every once in a while. I really enjoyed this video :)
I do think this theory makes more sense depending on Spongebob's Age.
My biggest problem with the employee of the month metric is the key word "consecutive." That does not tell the audience anything other than the amount of time required to build up the record. just because spongebob has 3&1/2 years worth in one episode does not mean spongebob has only worked for 3&1/2 years by that point, but that the time frame is his current streak. That time can be inflated by any hiatus to the reward (for example, maybe mr krabs doesnt award any in 2020 because the seafloor experiences the same problems as the surface, but he reinstates the awards in 2022. spongebob had a streak of 2 prior to the hiatus, and depending on how you count the streak after the hiatus, can reach 2 [if not counting pre hiatus] or 4[streak maintained during hiatus].) or shrunk by pity rewards given to temp help or squidward (we see such an example to some extent in the same episode, even if only in nightmare form).
Overall, i agree that the license metric is likely the most accurate, but at the same time the entire concept is trying to fit logic to an episodic show with no clear timeline. There is even enough material to work with for dedicated people to make a multiverse theory. (for example, the reason patrick is such a jerk in some episodes could be written off as an entirely different universe, as could any instance where spongebob is a bit too emotionally young for his main character portrayal be considered part of yet another timeline.) Heck, some might even say it is already confirmed what with episodes containing events like chrome future, alien tourist future, and squidward creating jelly fishing due to time travel shenanigans, and those are the more vague examples. There are flat out alternate reality episodes like the one in which manray takes over bikini bottom due to more time travel shenanigans.
Great job phantomstrider, i love your videos
Great video,Phantom Strider.Keep up the good work 😄👍🏾
I’d say by behavior he was an adolescent (18-23) in Help Wanted and now probably is in his late 30s.
Krabs just handed out the awards whenever he saw SpongeBob’s productivity slipping in his early years at the KK, which explains the inconsistency.
If I remember correctly, Hillenburg himself actually stated the movie is meant to be set at the end of the series
this is a great video! From the time I am watching this it has just came out a few minutes ago.

There is one thing I don’t understand about squidwards and squilliams age. After some research, it said Squidward is in his 60s. And squilliam is 39. This makes no sense because they both went to highschool together so I think squidward is younger than that-
Not everything g you search in the in is accurate you know.
This is a very interesting video. I've wondered this myself. I've wondered how old other characters are in relation to him too. Characters like Mr. Krabs and Plankton specifically. Even Squidward is implied to be older than Spongebob.
This was a pretty deep question that has pondered everyone’s minds. I do hope to is ends up in many people’s recommended

What about Spongehenge when we time travel 3000 years into the future?
If Spongebob lived for 3,000 years in Spongehenge, then he would be 1,014 years old (and it make sense since he's a sea sponge).
1986 (birth year) - 3000 (future) = 1,014 (age)

There's a theory about how after Spongebob died in the first movie he was reborn as a child and that's why season 4 onwards spongebob act more childish... Or my theory is maybe he lost a lot of brain cells and suffered some brain damage when him and patrick dried up
True
Or the brain cells he lost in the episode Squiliam Returns when Squidward told SpongeBob to empty his mind.
@@jasonrandom372 wasn't that in another season?
That's false the first spongebob movie is canonically the end of the entire show
Everyone says that seasons 1-3 are the golden age. Well, they are, but they are spitting on season 4. Season 4 has only one or two duds. Season 4 might some bad episodes, but most of them are nearly as great. But my last reason they are wrong is because season four was the golden age of Specials. So if you ask me, “why is season four underrated?” I will tell you, “because it has some of the best specials in the series.”
I definitely agree I'm 9 and seasons 1-4 are fantastic in my opinion episodes like SB-129,band geeks, wet painters and skill crane are some of the best of the show and honestly I think season 4 is better than season 1 and to be honest I actually think good nieghbors is a great episode

I’m just going with the license theory like you mentioned lol realistically he could be hundreds of years old but cartoon-wise, 34 seems like a good age for him. I wouldn’t say he’d be as young as 14 in the first episode however, each episode within each other can differentiate and not exactly be 2 months apart whether the timeframe of every week, month, etc. Overall, Spongebob is indeed a man-child:)
*☆HAPPY NEW YEAR !!☆*
Josh, are you a little like Spongey yourself? 😏 Lol. Thanks for making this video. Talking about SpongeBob's character development as an adult made my heart so full. 💕
I agree with you honestly, the movie theory makes the most sense, especially seeing as it’s been stated the first movie dose take place at the end of the Spongebob time line. The only other theory I have is what I call the actor theory, that being a theory that honestly can apply to all of animated media in general, the theory is essentially that all these cartoon characters are just actors playing themselves in their show, it at first seems unlikely but it does explain every continuity error, fourth wall break, and even the times we are shown it’s just a show, such as Pixar’s A Bug’s Life, Toy Story 2, monsters inc, or the LEGO movies all having bloopers. In which case the only idea we have to go off of is the driver’s license if it really is Spongebob’s birthday.
He'll always be a child in a man's body, we can all agree.
In SB-129 when Squidward travels 2000 years into the future, the calendar shows the year 4017. Meaning the first season takes place in 2017 at one point at least.
