- Ten months after the defeat of Armenian forces against #Azerbaijan in the war for control of the breakaway region of #NagornoKarabakh, #Armenia is seeing its border regions come under threat from Baku. According to Yerevan, hundreds of Azerbaijani soldiers have entered Armenian territory since mid-May 2021, particularly in the Syunik and Gegharkunik border provinces. The situation is sparking concern and even panic in Armenia, particularly in villages close to the frontier, where incidents are frequent. Our team on the ground reports.

Nagorno-Karabakh was never recognized internationally as part of Azerbaijan
Regarding Nagorno-Karabakh know that Azerbaijan's entire legal claim rests on a non-binding resolution from 2008 titled "The Situation in the Occupied Territories of Azerbaijan" in which only 39 states voted in favor, 100 abstained, and the United States, Russia, and France voted against.
Its also often argued that the UN Security Council "affirmed" Azerbaijan's sovereignty over Nagorno-Karabakh. In reality this is entirely from the language of preambles being taken out of context. The Preamble states "reaffirming the sovereignty and territorial integrity of and territorial integrity of the Azerbaijani Republic and all other States in the region". This doesn't find Armenia guilty of infringing on Azerbaijan's territorial integrity or that Nagorno-Karabakh is an integral part of Azerbaijan otherwise it would have stated so in the preamble.
To date no UN Security Council Resolution has restricted the Artsakh Republic's right to Self-Determination which is a fundamental right under international law included in the United Nations Charter.
Here's another thing to consider: The Artsakh Independence movement was legally valid under Soviet law and the actions of Azerbaijan support concept of Remedial Sucession.
Here's a quick recap of events to demonstrate this:
Feb 20, 1988, NK Regional Council of People's Deputies voted to transfer NK from Azerbaijan SSR to Armenia SSR.
Feb 11, 1989, Soviet Authorities withdrew NKAO from Azerbaijan SSR and placed it under the central authority of Soviet government.
Aug 30, 1991, Azerbaijan SSR adopted declaration of "Reestablishment of the State Independence of the Republic of Azerbaijan" as it existed in 1918-20 which did not include NK
Oct 18, 1991, Azerbaijan passed a declaration which declared itself the legal successor of the first Azerbaijani Republic which did not include NK and rejected its Soviet legal heritage which is what transferred NK to Azerbaijan in the first place.
Dec 10, 1991, NKAO holds a referendum for independence from Soviet Union, there is a 80% turnout and 99.98% voted in favor. On the day of the voter 10 Armenian civilians were killed and Azerbaijan later launched a unprovoked offensive against NK.
So no Armenia did not seize Nagorno-Karabakh from Azerbaijan.
