2009 to 2018 Dodge Ram 1500 to 5500 Steering Wheel Air Bag Clockspring Removal / Replacement

  • This video covers removing and reinstalling the steering wheel and airbag clockspring. The process is the same for 2009 to 2018 Ram and Dodge Ram 1500, 2500, 3500, 4500 and 5500 pickups. The steering wheels are slightly different between 2009-2012 and 2013-2018 models. A 2011 Ram 5500 was used in this video.
    If your airbag warning light is on, scan the SRS system for fault codes. The most common faults related to a broken clockspring are "B0001-13 Driver frontal squib 1 circuit open" and "B0002-13 Driver frontal squib 2 circuit open".

    Great video. A few tips:
    1. My steering wheels wouldn’t turn easily. You might have to jack up the front end to lessen the load. You do need the ability to turn the wheel to do this job. The biggest pain was the airbag metal clips, and using the selfie view on your phone, propped up on the dash in various positions, is helpful to see them because otherwise you’re working blind.
    2. Be careful not to drop the top torx screw down the steering column when you’re reattaching the new clock spring 🙄
    3. I used the Dorman clock spring. It comes with two plastic tabs to pull- one is the usual tab and the other is a ring, protecting the electrical female connecting pins. My plastic ring snapped improperly when I pulled it, leaving a plastic part remaining in the connector. I had to get that part out with needle nose pliers and it was finicky because you don’t want to bend the now exposed metal pins. Anyway, maybe there’s a specific way/sequence to pull these (maybe the exact same time?) that I was unaware of.
    4. You might have additional electrical connections versus the video, depending on what options you have through your steering wheel (I had more).
    5. In addition to the airbag light, I had the red dot on the dash (the security system). BOTH immediately disappeared when I started the truck back up.

    Great video! short, detailed and to the point! just one question... what's the yellow tab for? I may be using a clockspring out from a donor truck on my Ram 2014, since the new part is EXTREMELY expensive here in Mexico. Thank you!

    • @redneckoriental
      @redneckoriental  3 года назад +4

      At 4:43 in the video, I explain the yellow tab. If you're going to use a used clockspring, obviously the tab won't be there. You'll need to manually find the center point of the clockspring. LIGHTLY rotate the clockspring all the way clockwise until you encounter some resistance. I say "lightly" because of you force it past this point of resistance, it will break the ribbon cable inside the clockspring. So, after rotating all the way clockwise, count the number of rotations as you rotate it counter-clockwise. Again, lightly find the point where there is resistance. Then, rotate clockwise again 1/2 the number of rotations you made from one direction to the other. So, for instance if it rotated 5 turns from full left to full right, the center is 2-1/2 turns.

    You think I could put, say a 2015 or newer steering wheel in my 2009 Ram? I'd like to have the radio controls and possibly the cruise control buttons that come in the newer models, but I'm worried about not only whether the wheel will physically link up to my stock column, but also whether the cruise control and steering wheel control buttons will link up to the truck's cluster and my aftermarket head unit. Thanks, this is a great walkthrough video on breaking down and reinstalling!

    • @redneckoriental
      @redneckoriental  3 года назад +1

      I don't think it will work. The steering wheel design changed in 2010. Even if you found a 2009 steering wheel with radio and cruise on the steering wheel, you won't be able to make it work without a ton of modification. If the truck wasn't originally provisioned for steering wheel controls it's probably missing all the wiring for those controls. Sorry.

    • @redneckoriental
      @redneckoriental  3 года назад

      Roger, I'm sorry this is 6 months late. If your new clockspring didn't have a tab installed you need to find the center position of the clockspring. You don't need to install a tab, bus just know it's centered when you install it. To find the center, gently rotate it all the way clockwise. Stop when you feel a little resistance. That means you've gone as far as the internal ribbon cable will allow it to rotate. Now, as you gently rotate counter-clockwise, count the number of rotations. The center will be 1/2 that number of rotations back clockwise. For instance, if it allows 6 full rotations, you will go back 3 rotations. Then, you can install the clockspring.

    • @redneckoriental
      @redneckoriental  4 года назад +5

      @@supermfduke9223 It's plug and play. The only alignment I can think of is what's shown in the video; making sure your wheels are pointed straight ahead when you install the clockspring and not removing the yellow plastic tab from the new clockspring until it's installed. This is important because the clockspring can only turn a certain number of revolutions in either direction. If you turn it too much, you will break the ribbon cable inside. When you buy a new one, they've aleady locked it in the center position. So, the steering wheel should be positioned in the center (front wheels pointing straight forward). Even if you accidentally remove that alignment tab, you can re-center the clockspring yourself before you install it. As for any "coding" or programming, the clockspring doesn't need any coding. It's just a ribbon cable and some connectors. There are no other electronics inside.
