2012 with 248,000 on it today! Regular oil changes! 4th set of tires. Had some issues EARLY on... like power window was very slow, sticks in the cold... manifold gaskets replaced, AC fixed (something that required the dash come off), something with the Trans (a few times, same thing, put the truck in limp mode, other time left me in the street needing tow). I've replaced the suspension, breaks and rotors 4 times, Headlamp wire harness, both front wheel bearing, a bad coil.... but, I've never changed the radiator coolant, or any of the differentials, or any of that other stuff and she is driving me down the road. I want to get 300k out of it. It doesn't owe me anything. I'll get something pretty again after that!
Ram Big Horn 2013 2500 series, Got 300K on it, and just replaced a water pump, front brake disks, and starter, other than that, the alternator is the same, and there is no problem with the auto transmission, engine, Michelin tires 4th sets, I'm getting a new Rebel 2500 series, and I'm worried about the MDS engine. There are so many bad reviews. Do you have any advice on a Rebel 2500 series from current owners?
I still have my 2008 Dodge Ram 1500 quad cab Lonestar Edition 5.7 liter hemi flex-fuel, with over 422,000 miles. I remember buying the truck brand new back in 07 of November when it was called "King of a trucks." And not to mention, I still have "Lifetime Powertrain warranty" for as long as I own a vehicle under my name. And of course your regular maintenance and other stuff. When it comes to my automatic transmission I've only had it flushed 3 times, every 30K miles up to 90k miles. After that I just drop the pan and drain the fluid. Replace filter and gasket every 30K miles. Never flush an automatic transmission with high mileage. As for my differential I changed every 60K miles other than that it's still running like a champ. Good video!
I have the same truck, bought it new in December 08. No major issues other than tie rods. Live in Texas and the A/C still blowing cold, never had any problems or Freon added. Best truck I have ever owned.
No need to replace trans oil and filter every 30k. Every 60k is enough. But its up to you. My sister a 2003 1500 5.7 with the 545rfe it has 365k and it's still on its original trans. And she also has a 18 2500 6.4 with a 66rfe it has 95k and it also has lifetime warranty. I replaced the valve body at 55k due to a warped valve body. The main issue with the newer 65, 66, and 68rfe trans are valve body's warping, od clutches Buring up causing flare 4th gear and slips In 5th. On the newer 68 I have been seeing the snap ring pop off 2c piston. The truck will still run and shift OK most of the time. It may get a dtc set p2701. The 545rfe are mostly reliable.
A few things to note....the 09-12 rams have copper spark plugs that have to be done every 30,000 miles and the coolant is 5 years, 100,000 miles for those same years. The 13 and up had some changes to make the maintenance interval longer. Also, i never flush my transmission. Just drain and refill and new filter. My 09 manual says to change trans fluid at 10 years, 120,000 miles but i do it sooner.
@hunterellis5628 sitting pretty at 80,000miles. Needed a new starter since then. For the 8hp70, I used a ppe pan with valvoline maxlife. Do you idle? I have about 12% idle time.
Thank you for the brief yet concise video! I just purchased a 2010 Dodge Ram 1500 with 139K on it and will have a buddy of mine who's a great mechanic give it a thorough inspection. These pointers definitely help me in deciding what to possibly replace...especially the engine and tranny fluids.
They didn't do one on the 2007 model. Its because it was the best year ever built truck. Had one. Quad cab, lone star, 4x4, hemi, upgraded chip from the dealer, black pearl paint, 60-40 bench with double console, possitrac, upgraded sound system. Thing was a beast. Can't find them anywhere.
The zf 8 speed on a few of the 1500s dont have a transmission dipstick. Theres a fill plug on the side of the transmission. Fluid should slowly flow out if its full. The pan and filter is all one unit so if you need to change fluid, do the pan also. And you will need a fluid transfer pump to get fluid back into transmission. A cheap $10 pump from a auto parts store will work fine
Nobody listen to this guy. It is one unit and has to be done at dealership, due to the specific temperature it has to be checked. Fluid is also twice as expensive on this tranny
@@ramtrucks721 I've changed the fluid 3 times in my trucks (takes 1 to 1 1/2 hour).... Drain and new pan and fluid , add til over flows, close, level truck and do the shift procedure, check fluid level again....save a thousand bucks. Dealership gets a woody if you bring it up. Not rocket science
Yep no need to have dealer do trans service. Just make sure to use correct oil for 8 speeds. I have worked on many of these trans, customers replace there trans oil but use regular atf4. Then the bring it in to the dealer complaining the trans issues. Take a sample and it's pink oil. Automatic warranty decline on trans. I felt bad for a customer, he was a Vietnam War vet and ran over something, it cracked the pan. So he pulled the pan off and jbweld it which actually stop the leak, but he used atf4. Since most 8 speeds transmission repairs require us to email pictures of fluid and stuff, they would have not covered a replacement under warranty due to impact damage. So if you don't know what you are doing they yeah bring it in to the dealer or a good mechanic that knows how to service this trans.
This is a very informative video and it helps me to understand what my 2018 Ram 1500 Longhorn will need to have done in the next year. My truck currently has over 81K miles, and I am scheduled for the 80,000 mile service in 3 weeks.
I have a 2012 Ram with the 5.7L Hemi just approaching 100k miles. Nothing huge so far, CV axle on front left, pads & rotors on front wheels, new battery, new power window switch for RH passenger door, and tires. Looking at U-joints soon, and spark plugs in the spring. I do my own oil changes, plus both engine and cabin air filters.
Im at 200k, with a 2012 Ram 1500 Laramie 5.7 hemi. Still going strong!. Thus far, I have replaced a new belt, starter, an alternator, and a few sets of brakes, a bad oil pressure sensor, and a bad wheel hub, but honestly changing the oil when the dash reminds you will save you a lot, and the transmission fluid and filter, every 50-60 thousand mikes. Other that my Ram runs like champ.
Iridium spark plugs were introduced in the later 2013 models. If you have an early '13 or earlier, you have copper-nickel plugs and need to change them every 30k miles.
@@DL101ca just had my 8 plugs, frt & bk diff and trans fluid changed first time @ 105k mi. On my wife’s 2016 Ram 1500 Hemi. No problems were found by mechanic, $1150. That tells me that Rams are well built. Next will change the coolant whether it needs it or not.
I have 125k mi on my 2012 ram hemi. Im very impressed at the stock dual exhaust. Still leak free in PA and that the first vehicle i could ever say that about.
My 2014 needs trans replacement at 99k miles. Has had starter, multiple broken exhaust manifold bolts, bad fuel sensor. Definetly gonna do all fluids and spark plugs once i get it back finally.
2010 Hemi 4x4 Ram 1500 with 260,000 miles Water pump, front wheel bearings, PCV valve, religious oil changes, INSTALL A CABIN AIR FILTER, trans service (MUST USE OEM FLUIDS) Never replaced the alt, starter, fuel pump went out at 250,000, rear suspension bushings went out at 230,000
I have a 2004 ram 1500 slt 5.7 431thou miles and engine still rus perfect. Im about to rebuild front end , replace timing chain and go over whole truck. I just bought a 2018 longhorn laramie . l love Dodge trucks and have never had major trouble with Dodge. Very durable. Buy Dodge
I always trust 1A videos, best on the web. my tip is to always wipe the trans dipstick clean at the top before pulling it out. keeps debris from entering the tube.
Just did my plugs on my 12 Ram. As long as you have a swivel and a plug socket its easy. Plugs were pretty bad ( 65k miles) , mass air flow needed a clean also. Just praying the hemi tick goes away with new ex manifold.
@@okitailsnscales1707 it's the front and back studs holding the manifold shield as well as the manifold itself. They usually snap off creating exhaust leaks.
I always check the ball joints by jacking the wheel up by the bottom of the lower control arm. With the wheel hanging down, puts more tension on the ball joints, you might not catch a bad ball joint in its early stages.
Had a 2012 ram 1500 5.7 express, I bought it new in 2012 ,and it just last me till this year 2024 had 146,000 thousand miles I wished it would gave last longer than that ,change oil at every 6000 miles and the lifters failed on me and ate up the cam , now I traded it it for a 2024 ram 1500 5.7 e torque hopefully it lasts over 200 miles
2012 ram 1500 with 174k. Getting the engine replaced under warranty. Something with the valve and cam. Gonna have a 0 mile motor on a 174k truck. Gonna do some other maintenence on it and keep her going 🎉
The 2015 5.7 Hemi doesn’t have a transmission dipstick, it’s a closed transmission and suggests changing the pan/filter at 160,000 miles. Yes, I said pan/filter is a one piece deal, the filter is part of the pan which is plastic. Other than that great video, very informative. I’m new to Dodge Rams and my god the little differences with the Hemi are interesting to say the least. 😂
I always did drain and refill (drop pan change filters re install pan) The manuals don’t say flush so. Maybe once or twice it be ok for it. You want some friction and grit in there especially with more mileage on the vehicle
You should also check the spare tire wench that lets the tire down, it could get rusted and not work, I would suggest that you lower the spare tire down a little way to make sure it works.
I do that a couple times a year and hose off the area where the spare tire sits. Good to double check everything is working in case you need it in a pinch.
LOL 😂, the first thing that I did when I bought my 2012 was to get thar tire and put it in the bed. I did that with any pickup truck that I had. I couldn't imagine being with a flat tire in a snowstorm or rain and crawling around on the ground with hardly any room to get the spare out . But I never had a flat in over 20 years because I carry a plug kit and Dewalt tire pump.
Good video, 100,000 miles on coolant seems to long to go, and radiator hoses need to be changed out at 60-70,000 miles in my opinion, and I would replace the thermostat, hoses start to get hard. Newer trucks do not have transmission dip sticks, I’m not convinced that the lifetime fluid is all that.
8 Speed Trans have closed systems that can't be checked conventionally. You have to go through some weird ritual or take it to the dealer to get it done correctly without compromising the integrity of the closed system. Kinda cool because I imagine it might have more longevity but at the same time makes me a little worried because I can't check on it myself.
2016 Ram 1500 with 79,000 miles. Has the 8 speed transmission and doesn’t have the trans dipstick… wish it did so I could check it. Side note, why did Dodge not think it was a good idea to have a cab air filter on my model? Had to add my own with and aftermarket kit.
Picked up a used 2014 RAM, popped the air filter because the engine was struggling on hills...Turns out there was a chipmunk nest in there, and the remnants of one of their fearless leaders. Check your filter if you live in the country!!! My mechanic missed it....So I'm looking for another one now
2016 ram Laramie Longhorn no transmission dipstick check these you gotta put it up on a lift. Serviced mine at 60,000. It was shifting funny after the service it was fine.

Honest question I got a 2016 Ram 1500 and I dont know if it ever got its transmission serviced at 60 000k and it was at 89k.....now it's 95k. Would it be bad to change it still? I'm always nervous to change fluid or touch a transmission
@@mbr9106 No, too many people urged me not to. When it's too a certain point and too late, you'll definitely have more issues after changing it. Flushing it is even worse when it's too late. At 160k miles, you should just look into replacing it.
I have the 2015 with 5.7. Bought with 100k miles on it. Everything seems ok even though online it says to avoid this year model. Hopefully it will be ok.
There's no transmission dipstick on these and no way to check the fluid easily. The 8 speed ZF8HP transmission is supposedly a sealed lifetime transmission. There is a way to service them, but it is a very specific detailed protocol that is important to follow. Most Ram dealerships just say that it's a lifetime transmission and will not service them. The filter is built into the Pan... so in order to change the filter, you have to replace the pan. There are now some aftermarket pans that have a replaceable filter. The simplest maintenance is to just do a drain and refill. It's better than nothing. It's only a partial/incomplete service... you cannot drain all the fluid out and you're not replacing the filter, but you are getting about 50% new fluid in there. Just make sure you follow the proper steps, ie: level the transmission (not the truck... this usually means having the rear end higher, which you need to do anyway so rear wheels are off the ground to run thru the gear sequence, one of them being running it in second for 5 or 10 seconds... research it carefully and do it right...).
Rear differential should be filled to the line on my 2010 Dodge Ram... it has a mark...Filling it up to the bottom of the opening will be overfull and cause the rear seals to leak at the wheels. Change all u joints at 100k with greaseable u joints ZERKS.
I picked up a 2020 Ram 1500 Classic SLT with 68k miles about to hit 72k and going to change the oil now to keep it strong! So far so good 🙌🏽 came from a 2013 bmw and it was a nightmare learned my lesson tho 💀🤣
Great video, quick question. Is there no power steering reservoir? I’m gearing allot of squeaking when I turn my wheels. Trying to figure it out. Thanks!
Thank you for the video. its very helpful. I'm thinking of purchasing a 2012 ST 4x4. It has 129k miles on it. No accidents per carfax report. Oil has been changed regularly along with the air filter when needed. Struts replaced at 90k, tranny flushed at 93k, and plugs replaced at 110k. Is there anything else I should look for or be concerned about? I'm a first time truck/RAM owner. Any help or advice from anyone would be helpful and greatly appreciated. Thanks again...
No dipstick. Pretty involved procedure to change the fluid in the 8hp70. Fluid change is recommended every 80000miles by manufacturer of transmission, Chrysler claims lifetime...not likely.
Great video, like always i have a problem with my car is a older car, and the check engine light came up and the scanner said is a transmission solenoid e...but the transmission seems to change gears fine well the 4 gear take a little longer i think...what you recommend, how i now is the solenoid and not the filter is clogged or something because the car was park for a long time maybe 7 year ...
I just brought a 2014 and while looking over it I didn't see a trans dipstick and assumed it was a sealed case. Guess I'll be rechecking in the morning.
Thanks for the video. I’ve saved it and am doing all of this on my truck. I’ve got the tools and setup so might as well stop being lazy because even the mechanic ain’t doing all this 😂
Probably not the best place to post this but I just bought a 2014 ram bighorn yesterday. 71k miles. Last night it started on its own 3 different times. I replaced the batteries in both key fobs today and waiting to see what happens. I read it could also be the after market remote start malfunctioning. How hard would it be to remove that?
Are there any grease points on the manufacturer upper control arms or anywhere on the front of the vehicle? I'm getting a squeak and thought it was the struts, then maybe control arm, but it may be the sway bar. It's only with up/down movement.
You guys have anything on replacing an engine coolant sensor? On a 2013 ram 1500 4.7 v8? There seems not to be any info about it online. Ive been searching for days.
Very seldom anyone talks about the 2009 and up 1500 dodge ram. I have a 2010 with a 4.7 engine and I’ve got 167,000 miles and it still runs great change the oil every 3000 miles and do periodic maintenance like I should. The only thing I’ve had to change was a water pump like you said there is a problem with the water pump and put a new belt. I’m planning on driving this dodge four wheel 4.7 forever it’s a standard cab I’m 74 years old and I like this truck. And it looks like now on top of it so any advice on Dodge 4 x 4‘s specially 4.7‘s I will be turned into Jp I’m coming like to show
at Vid was awesome and I am picky! So I live in Florida, about to move back up north and would love to get this used 2014 dodge ram 1500 with 170k miles! So not a few but not a ton of miles right. Its prices well at $6800 (I might get it for a fair bit less!!) body is in good, not great shape but not at all an eye soar! Same with interior. NO RUST. If i look it over, as a Lay Person who is NOT a mechanic, what can I focus on first! ( I do have a mechnic but he is so busy so, might need to do my due diligence here!!) My main concern is, we move in 4-6 weeks 1300 miles up north and a bit terrified it makes it with no major drama. Any insights would be awesome if you see this in time. Otherwise, good on ya, "keep truckin! " (haha get it.....truckin lol)
The wheel bearing check is for a pretty bad bearing that has little hold. If it is a seized up one, the tire test wont help. Check your abs sensor at the hub and get a flashlight, if there is a significant amount of grease on the ring sensor of the hub, you likely have a seized up bearing that needs to be replaced. I only know this because my abs light came on and this was the reason. Also a soft rotational tire hum noise was an indicator. Purge valve checks on these rigs are also a must even without a thrown code. Also, the gas caps on these 4th gens are garbage.
100% not GM. 2008-2011 they had major engine issues with the displacement on demand. Then “fixed it” with a solenoid block. 2012-2013 were good trucks (still had some cylinder deactivation issues but not nearly as extreme as before). But when they did the redesign in 2014 the transmission because extremely problematic. Look into the class action lawsuit against them for the transmissions. The trans clunks, shakes, rattles, hard shifts. Just an absolute mess. Ford or Ram is where my money is going in the next 2-3 weeks here. Best of luck to you!
That is a question that has no right answer. Too many variables. Do you need a fullsize,a heavy duty, a small truck ? V6 engine,V8, diesel ? Turbo, non turbo. Etc etc...
I would like to ask you why does my car jumps when I put it in R or D and it jumps only when the car is in minimum. The truck is a 2013 dodge ram 1500. Thanks!!
I’m at 190k on a work truck. I assumed the dealership would have done the maintenance I asked after getting it repaired from getting hit by an 18 wheeler. Definitely didn’t do any. I need to do all of this or pay to get it done
Funny I stay on my maintenance and I've had so many things brake on my RAM and I'm only at 115000 km it was built in Mexico wondering if that has anything to do with it.
Question, came across this video and I have a 2010 ram 1500 and 104000 miles and I have a vibration in the steering wheel when barely turning to the left.Kind of like when switching from right lane to left lane or when going around a slight left bend in the road. Can really feel it going around a left bend in the road.No vibration when turning to the right. Thanks for your input.

Nobody listen to this guy. It is one unit and has to be done at dealership, due to the specific temperature it has to be checked. Fluid is also twice as expensive on this tranny
And you can easily do it yourself because your truck tells you Trans fluid temp. Do your research and you don't need a dealership for nothing
@@ramtrucks721
I've changed the fluid 3 times in my trucks (takes 1 to 1 1/2 hour)....
@@therealDYL93you’re exactly right…
This is a very informative video and it helps me to understand what my 2018 Ram 1500 Longhorn will need to have done in the next year. My truck currently has over 81K miles, and I am scheduled for the 80,000 mile service in 3 weeks.
My 2018 has 65k miles. Your video reminded me to service my diff and trans fluids. And to check my spare tire pressure. Thanks!
If you have an early '13 or earlier, you have copper-nickel plugs and need to change them every 30k miles.
the replacements are now all iridium at least that is what my 12 called for even though it had standard plugs in it...
@@bones007able as long as you make sure they're in good condition, copper or iridium won't matter.
I change my coolant every 80k miles to 100k. Like 3 times… on my older ram hemi which has almost 270k on it.
What a ole reliable.

I always trust 1A videos, best on the web. my tip is to always wipe the trans dipstick clean at the top before pulling it out. keeps debris from entering the tube.
Just bought a 2018 with 50k miles. Thanks for this vid, would love a gen maintenance video for this gen ram 1500
Excellent and informative video. Concise information without the fluff. I'll be using this guide for my 2021 Ram. Keep up the excellent work!
Just did my plugs on my 12 Ram. As long as you have a swivel and a plug socket its easy. Plugs were pretty bad ( 65k miles) , mass air flow needed a clean also. Just praying the hemi tick goes away with new ex manifold.
Did u do iridiums? I think those yaers came with copper plugs
If the sound goes awAy when heated it’s a manifold stud, if it sounds like ping pong balls then you have a lifter issue.
Mine goes away after it warms up what do you mean by manifauld stud ?
@@okitailsnscales1707 it's the front and back studs holding the manifold shield as well as the manifold itself. They usually snap off creating exhaust leaks.

I always check the ball joints by jacking the wheel up by the bottom of the lower control arm. With the wheel hanging down, puts more tension on the ball joints, you might not catch a bad ball joint in its early stages.
Incredible video! I'd love to see more of these service style videos.

I want this guy working on my truck. Luv guys that have passion for their craft
I always did drain and refill (drop pan change filters re install pan)
The manuals don’t say flush so.
Maybe once or twice it be ok for it.
You want some friction and grit in there especially with more mileage on the vehicle
Awesome rundown. Just hit 100k not too long ago. Gonna tackle this on my next set of days off along with a few minor issues
I bought my 2015 new and it only has 52.5k miles on it. I had the hemi tick and a few small things break but overall it's a solid truck!
Add Lubegard Biotech (3 oz per quart of oil) I added a full 15oz bottle on the last oil change and the tick disappeared almost immediately.
@@frankwong294Most tics are caused by a broken exhaust manifold bolt and oil doesn't kill that.

You should also check the spare tire wench that lets the tire down, it could get rusted and not work, I would suggest that you lower the spare tire down a little way to make sure it works.
Winch
@@MyDailyPerspective maybe the guy has a wench lowering the winch ...you need to keep her well lubed too...😂
I do that a couple times a year and hose off the area where the spare tire sits. Good to double check everything is working in case you need it in a pinch.
I put the spare in the bed of truck with a chain to hold it down. You are right about tire lift rusting and not working as my Silverado did it
LOL 😂, the first thing that I did when I bought my 2012 was to get thar tire and put it in the bed. I did that with any pickup truck that I had. I couldn't imagine being with a flat tire in a snowstorm or rain and crawling around on the ground with hardly any room to get the spare out . But I never had a flat in over 20 years because I carry a plug kit and Dewalt tire pump.
Great video, very informative and easy to understand. He's literally working on my exact truck. Liked and subscribed!
Thanks for subscribing!

Did you have it done at the dealer? I'm curious how much. Thanks!
@@Searchin4tone No, at a local well-respected independent shop. It was $900.
@@mitchwinder1204
$900 for the trans fluid and filter change? 8 speed?
@@Searchin4tone Yes. The fluid is proprietary and over $50/qt. And the filter is part of housing of the trans. It’s also pricey.
@@mitchwinder1204
Good to know, I'll have to make sure the Ram dealer is using OEM fluids and parts. They only charge $375 for that service

Honest question I got a 2016 Ram 1500 and I dont know if it ever got its transmission serviced at 60 000k and it was at 89k.....now it's 95k. Would it be bad to change it still? I'm always nervous to change fluid or touch a transmission
Did you ever change it ?
@@mbr9106 No, too many people urged me not to. When it's too a certain point and too late, you'll definitely have more issues after changing it. Flushing it is even worse when it's too late. At 160k miles, you should just look into replacing it.
I have the 2015 with 5.7. Bought with 100k miles on it. Everything seems ok even though online it says to avoid this year model. Hopefully it will be ok.
As your brake pads wear the brake fluid level goes down. If it’s low, more than likely you need pads.
What's the age and mileage of this truck?
Seems to be in pretty good condition.

Is there anything else I should look for or be concerned about? I'm a first time truck/RAM owner. Any help or advice from anyone would be helpful and greatly appreciated. Thanks again...
Damm dude I love how u can explain all that stuff. Thumb up!
Good video. The 8 speed trans does not have a dipstick like that though.
Start by changing the fluid and filter.
I just brought a 2014 and while looking over it I didn't see a trans dipstick and assumed it was a sealed case. Guess I'll be rechecking in the morning.
8 speed transmission doesn't have a dipstick. Sealed system. Pan is changed when servicing as it contains filter.
It may be the Tipm open the cover and check for corrosion around the relays
100,000 miles on a first set of spark plugs, yeah I saw in the manufacturers manual. A bit mind boggling!

Are there any grease points on the manufacturer upper control arms or anywhere on the front of the vehicle? I'm getting a squeak and thought it was the struts, then maybe control arm, but it may be the sway bar. It's only with up/down movement.
If you check the trans oil, dont you need to shift through all geara, hold every gear for a bit put it in neutral and then check it? Or am i wrong

at Vid was awesome and I am picky!
Great video 1a auto ,I have just a simple question which in your opinion is the most reliable pick up truck ???????
Etc etc...
