Same. I think its weird to wear a band shirt for a band you don’t even listen to. At that point its just a fashion trend, or maybe even trying to fit in. All trends come and go so its no big deal.
I mean, you don't know if any of these people are actually metalheads or not. Just cuz someone makes different music doesn't mean they don't love metal. Post Malone is a great example.
My little cousin went to see the used, He was telling me he paid 50 bucks for a used tshirt. My mom overheard him an flipped out. She thought he bought a used tshirt, like he jus got a old nasty shirt somebody was wearing an paid em 50 for it. I lost my shit it was so funny.
Dave mustaine told a story in an interview that he walked up to a couple who were wearing shirt megadeths and they said to him they didn’t know who he or the band were and thought he was just a creep. And didn’t know he was the singer of the band that was on their shirts. There was even someone who thought Metallica was a clothing brand.
About 5years ago there was this girl that trained in the gym where I worked, she was flirty and chatty with me so the day she walked in wearing a slayer shirt I thought "holy shit shes wifey" so walked up to her pulling out my earphones as I exclaimed "I'm actually listening to south of heaven right now" and she responds with this totally confused face saying "what are you talking about" I then said slayer pointing at the shirt and she said "oh I just got this in Penny's, is it a band" (pennys is Primarks name in ireland) and without even processing it I blurted out " you dont know who slayer are? So Why the hell are you wearing the shirt???" She was a bit embarrassed and tbh looking back it was stupid of me to call her on it the way I did but in my head I'm like "wow I literally learned how to fight just because of the amount of times assholes and bullies in school would take the piss out of metal attire"
I’m a black guy that’s been wearing metal shirts since I was a kid. My dad would take me to shows never had anybody question what I wear. But if you ask I’m ready to school you 😂 51 years old and still rockin!!
I can relate. I'm a 53 yo, conservative looking, mother of 2 & mimi of 3 and I will drag any & everyone that is just somewhat willing to every metal show I can get to. Most ppl are shocked when they would come into my office cause it was the typical office with pics of my family all around but playing over my computer would be Wait & Bleed, Face to Face or Steambreather.
People rarely bother me either (black female here). They are usually shocked about how much I do know on the rare occasions when they do approach me. I listen to a lot of “obscure” bands so most people (Americans) have no clue who they are anyway.
Music isn't a fashion statement or about race I think if you're into metal then represent that shit I'm white and listen to metal and Tupac and wear both t shirts because that's what I love not to get a fashion compliment. I hope you always represent metal it speaks to everyone that music is universal and for everyone. I have black friends that love Metallica and Pantera.
I get a little upset when I see someone with a band shirt that I like, and they don't listen to the band. It's not because I care that they are posers, or don't listen to the same music as me, but it's because I thought I had an icebreaker to meet a new friend. Sometimes it still works, but often times it's a false sense of identity.
The fact that they're a poser only means that they're making a mockery of a art form u take seriously so yes u do care that they are posers as u should...
Same and it was the best way to get exposure. You weren't going to hear metal on the radio so you found music through zines and street teams handing out demos at shows. Then if you were lucky had a big bands original shirt cause you repped them in their young days?? Ultimate cred.
One of my old bands used to cover "Leather Rebel" and I tried to talk to girl wearing a Pain Killer shirt...... 98 percent sure she had no idea what I was even talking about.
In that situation, I wouldn't answer regardless if it was me. Who are you to challenge me? Good thing I only wear band shirts I know because of all these elitists out here! F.U.
I love when people throw out the term "elitist " because they spot a poser trying make a mockery of something that metal fans fight to keep alive. I still remember being called a Satanist for throwing up metal horns in a catholic middle school. I have fought battles with assholes over metal stereotypes what has Kayne West or some other person who doesn't Ike metal done for metal other than buy a tee-shirt ? Also a lot of these people that use " elite " term are more than likely people who got into metal late and life and are downloaders that feel like their credibility as a metal fan is threatened.
CFH was the first album I ever bought with my own money. Got it the week it came out. Hearing Redbeard shred... I was never the same. Metalhead for life.
Back in the 80’s & 90’s it meant something. People gave you serious shit for listening to those bands, so it was a way to identify your own. Then, suddenly, every highschool football team was playing Pantera at the rallies and the basketball team was using Enter Sandman. All those guys who gave us shit were suddenly stealing our shit, so it was personal back then.
So fuckin true like all the wanna be emos wear Led Zeppelin shirts and fake depression and the popular girls wear nirvana shirts and one said that their favorite clothing brand was nirvana 😤
Not just that, but just about everything we were teased and picked on for before has become trendy and "cool" with those idiots now. Metal, D&D, Star Wars, Star Trek, Lord of the Rings, wide rimmed glasses, video games, or even just being a smart person...
Hmm this is a difficult one for me. Being from a small village, I was one of the only kids in my area who would wear band tshirts and listen to metal music, and I was bullied for years for it. I still wore them, because I would rather wear my favourite band tshirts than pretend to be into something I wasn't into to blend in, even if it meant getting bullied, because you have a passion and love for that music and you hope to meet others who like them, too. To see people wear it casually without knowing what it is does get to me on that fact alone, even if I don't want it to, especially when it's those same people who would have bullied people like me for it in school. I do get what they're saying, there's not much harm in it and it can just promote them more, but I don't know. It's a weird one.
For my generation Metal Tshirts was a way to find friends that understand you, being a metalhead wasn't cool in the past and often we were bullied because our music. Meet people who wear that kind tshirts without know whats behind a metalhead people who never ben in a mosh pit makes me sad because we have nothing to share.
Exactly.. I don't really mind if people want to wear shirts even though they don't like the music.... But for me? Why the fu*k would I do that? Nah nah nah, if I have a band shirt then it's because I love the band, fuck owning shirts for bands I don't like.
@@cookiesontoast9981 exactly. i don't really understand why people would buy a band shirt if they aren't into it. it's something i'd never do. but i guess some people just like the "aesthetic".
I kind of get it when people get really irritated by it though. I do myself sometimes. I’m mainly into death metal and it’s sub genres and other really extreme shit like goregrind and it really grinds my gears when I see like playboi carti wearing a fetal deformity shirt and his fans obsessively searching for their shirts without even knowing they are a band. That being said people take it a bit to far
I was a metalhead and still am for the most part but I would just classify myself as a music lover. I'm 45 and as I got older I opened up myself to different genres of music. 20 years ago I knew absolutely nothing about Motown and 60s r&b or doowop. Im here today to tell you I love that old school r&b. It has it's place in music and doesn't try to be anything different than what it is... Anyway what I originally was going to say is I used to buy albums when I was younger based on the name of the band and their artwork on the album cover. Not all the time. That is how I found soad from their name and first album cover with the hand. Knew absolutely nothing about them, turned them on and they fkn blew my mind. If I can do that,I think it's fine to wear a cool looking metal shirt. Then maybe just maybe they'll get turned on to the music. It's a bit of a reach,I know.
When Nate said 'if you put a Slayer shirt on you're signing up for all kinds of shit', he reminded me of something. Once, while walking through a department store, a random metalhead jumped out at me and yelled 'welcome to hell' because I was wearing a Venom shirt. It made me happy.
Right on! I was in a Carraba’s restaurant with a Machine Head shirt that I cut the neck and sleeves off of, and a waiter went up to me and just yelled “Let freedom ring with a shotgun blast”. One of the most amusing moments of my life so far haha
Haha, this shit has happened with me ages ago with a From Mars to Sirius tee(RIP) and more recently with a clutch sweater from the Book of Bad Decisions tour.
The only issue I have is when these posers complain about how metal is "just noise and doesn't make sense" but wear the tees religiously just because their favourite celebrities or pop artists wear them. I'd rather they be unaware posers than hypocritical ones.
@@greatdude7279 My whole family and two of my friends have called metal "random noises" you must not interact with people regularly if you haven't heard anyone say that
This. If you wear a band shirt out in public, you shouldn't be surprised if you get asked about them i.e sharing some of your favorite songs. It's not always "Gatekeeping" or "Elitism" neither, some people are genuinely excited to meet other potential listeners of the band in public.
@@KaiDecadence exactly. it's funny how some people think it's wrong to ask about the band. i feel like that's one of the cool things about merch, it connects you with people who like the same stuff.
@@qgp Agreed, it's not supposed to be about elitism, it's about trying to connect with other people and the only people I see getting offended by this are people who only wear band shirts for fashion while not knowing that what they're wearing is a band logo.
I saw Slayer at universal amphitheater there were 2 distinct groups of people . Family's dressed up for the day headed to universal studios and a long line of metal heads dressed in black shirts black pants waiting to be let in to the slayer concert. Coolest guy at the show was wearing a iced earth shirt . This concert they wanted to charge extra to go in the mosh pit .iced earth shirt guy rounded up about 50 people and they walked right through the security guarding the mosh pit area . Once the security gave up everyone including my date started to flow into the pit area .
At high school, a kid was wearing a Metallica shirt, and I asked him what his favorite Metallica song was, and he straight-faced asked me “What’s Metallica?”
in high school some girl was wearing a skid row shirt and i went up to her all excited and asked her what was her favorite song. she looked at me all confused and didnt know that it was a band.
If I was wearing Tshirt of a band/artist that I don't listen, I would feel stupid. And for me waring a musician/band tshirt is more than showing what type of music I'm listening, its also about supporting the artist/band. Also metal tshirts are way cheaper than the usual mainstream brands.
Yea men when you're going to buy a formal shirt or pants it starts from 90 to 200 but a band merch is between 25 to 50 and ı kinda feel more relaxed in wearing those
I'm not going to tell people they can't wear a shirt but your referencing the thing that confuses me. I just don't understand how someone would buy a shirt of a band and it's not because they love the band. And 99% of the time if I see someone wearing a metal shirt I'll approach them and say "cool shirt" and it's a shitty thing that my compliment is based on a falsity. Also, if someone is wearing a metal shirt and a metaller engages them in conversation only to discover they really aren't in any way a fan that is fucking awkward and, frankly, a bit of a downer.
@@alanandrewmass That remind me that once I had the reverse experience. I was at a local gig with some hardcore, black and death metal bands. One guy made a compliment towards my Tshirt and I was like " nice, someone that listens Blood of Kingu as well" and proceed to ask the guy if he likes the band, what he thinks of Roman Saenko, etc. The guy was like "nah I don't know the band, its just a cool tshirt". So from this case I can say that some people like the cover/art of the metal tshirts and thats why they wear them. Ofc. there are posers as well, you can find them in any musical genre, so its not a metal specific stuff. But yep, it was kinda awkward my conversation with that guy.
@@ZerraX2 Hahaha! That's an amusingly awkward situation. Although is this proving your point? That person might like the shirt's design but that doesn't mean he's going to go out and buy it...
I stopped wearing my dm shirts a long time ago. too many times I get other metalers trying to quiz me on said band or other anecdotals that I need to be made aware of. or suggestions for other bands. hardly talk about the topic. heavy black all day.
fun fact: Post Malone actually was in a metalcore band called Ashley's Arrival and even auditioned to be the guitarist of Crown the Empire. So it's safe to say he is or was a metalhead and definitely not a poser.
Fun fact there are whole pages dedicated to people who have the scratchy blood logo tattooed, mostly on their forearms. Then there's the 'full patch on the back' school . . . I recall reading an interview with Sum41, the punk band, who got to meet their idol Kerry King, they said "We weren't sure if he would smile or kill us". Another clip where they're practicing backstage and drowning out Metallica, and Hetfield won't go ask them to turn it down so they can practice too. Full disclosure have more than one Metallica shirt for every day of the week and a Slayer shirt or two also :) Wearing a shirt is your personal advertisement for the band, if you can't make a good ad and represent the product, you probably shouldn't wear the shirt.
I have 3 Sabaton shirts and 1 hoodie, 3 Judas Priest shirts, 2 Motörhead shirts, 1 Slayer shirt, 1 Dream Evil shirt, 1 HammerFall shirt (also the Crimson Thunder single, signed by all band members), 4 Iron Maiden shirts, 2 Metallica shirts, 1 Pantera shirt, 1 Mustasch shirt, 1 Alestorm shirt, 1 Blind Guardian shirt, 1 Clutch shirt, and it goes on.
Only goes to show that metal, rock music in general is the coolest but like I already commented just because I like another pro team's colors and jersey it doesn't mean I'm going to get their gear. I'm happy with my team's red, white and blue colors!
Well said Chris Motionless! If you’re gonna wear a shirt from a band you know absolutely Fuck all about, you owe it to us to at least listen to that band and at least try to become a part of our scene.
No. I don't want posers. You either are with the band or wear a shirt of shit, cause that what fits more than a brain for such a person. God I hate posers.
a poser who is clueless about the band isnt a good marketing strategy. Kim Kardashian isnt liked... so her wearing a Morbid Angel shirt prob made people say eww without knowing who it is. I bet she couldnt even listen to one entire MA song all the way through lol
True I mean its mostly people in the music industry wearing these metal shirts like it's just literslly a walking advertising for Metallica. And I gotta believe Kanye probably likes orbhas some respect for Metallica
There should be a brand that creates t-shirts with non-existing metal bands - for those who for some reason to wear a metal band t-shirt, but don't listen to metal.
The metal aesthetic is popular. A lot of streetwear brands are doing that. It doesn’t shock me to see someone wearing an Obituary or Morbid Angel shirt but don’t even know they’re bands, it just looks like the current fashion.
The Metal scene isn't just a scene, it's a fucking family. Real fans, real people going through similar shit, and real artists who share that connection with the fans. I get judged all the time for music I listen to. To wear something you have no understanding of, kinda does rub me the wrong way.
Me too,and thanks for speaking the truth,I'm African and I fuckin love metal,my fellow countrymen never heard of it and criticize me for listening to it
If the posers wanna spend 20 bucks for a t-shirt let them. Someone benefits from that money, either the band directly or indirectly or a manufacturer somewheres down the chain. Plus it increases metal's exposure by putting that name on the shirt out into the world, increasing the chances to gain new fans. Kim Kardashian has over 200 million followers. If just one percent of them are motivated to check out a band than it's worth it. Bands, especially more niche ones like Morbid Angel, don't sell multi millions of records like Metallica or Slipknot, so any extra money helps them continue on to make more music.
Exactly. I don't have the problem of a non-metal fan wears a t-shirt, but when they know shit about the music and criticize it, while their music most of the times is very shallow
I’ve gotten called out before for a Metallica shirt. I’m super into the band but I guess because I don’t look like a Metal head, some ppl think otherwise. Long story short I was asked to name my favorite album and song. I did just that and more. Should’ve seen their faces when I showed them I can also play the song as well 😆
The most boiled down reason I can find is this: Kids who were bullied and ostracized by the 'cool' kids for liking metal and wearing metal band shirts are now seeing those same people wearing them as if they hadn't spent their life making other peoples' lives miserable for wearing those shirts. You don't just get over that.
This guy gets it. I feel the same with anime and other "nerd" stuff gaining popularity over the years. On one hand I am glad it has but on the other I just wanna say "fuck you, this is our shit."
The fashionistas claim that they dress the way they do to "express themselves". What expression are they making by wearing a Misfits, Bob Marley or Ramones shirt? It's usually that they know bands like Aerosmith and the Stones have a classic image that has remained cool for decades and they want to feel like they are part of something deeper than than the Cardi B and Nicki Minaj fluff they actually listen to.
Ya, if ya wearin' a www.officialcancerslug.com #cancerslug shirt, I'll think we'll have a fine chance at gettin' along ya... Dancin'ta those sincere songs...
Metal music branding (logo, album covers, etc.) is incredible art. I just take comfort in the fact that non-metalheads also have some sort of weird, unique and "devilish" sense of taste in art by wearing band merch.
@@INIGO7 Regardless of the level of past success or current level of relativity, ripping off a band is ripping off a band. @@lycan2549 r/whoosh it’s not a matter of opinion, the point is if a band has been around n for so long n has reached a level of popularity in pop culture(Metallica ,slayer, beatles) it’s unavoidable that retail stores are gonna sell the shirts of said artitists...
The same people who are wearing these T-shirts would be the same people who would bully metalheads, call them names, look down on them for wearing those T-shirts 20 years ago. (edit: or before this became a trend, 20 yrs ago is from personal experience)
I was thinking that too, and on the exact flip side to that, and i saw this personally, and not bringing race into this but if someone wore a Rap shirt back in the 90's and you didn't seem the "type" that would be into it, people be on your ass about it in a heartbeat " what tha fuck you know about that shieeet? think you some straight up G, Homie?!" in high school, i saw a kid wearing a Dr Dre "The Chronic" shirt and these guys were all over him, calling him "wannabe" and "poser" stuff like that, yeah right, we're in small town in Texas here and these assholes wanna act they're legit gangstas just for that, fucking idiots, the only "streets" they know of is the little dirt road they lived on!🙄that's why i take a small offence to obvious non-Metal people wearing Metal shirts, I'm an almost 30 years now Metalhead and I have at at least 50-75 Metal shirts, maybe more,i never bothered counting, got them from shows, stores, online, wherever i could get them, but i don't ever get a shirt of a band i don't know or like , otherwise what's the point? so i do have an issue with it, except for chicks. Metal shirts always look good on a girl, i wish more would do it, so that trend didn't take off that well, but I'm not a fan if they're wearing a Metal shirt and they're obviously trying ti be trendy, and it depends on the shirt, you might be able to pull that off with Iron Maiden and a Metallica shirt, but you'll never do it with bands like Darkthrone, Mayhem and Dark Funeral, those logos alone still get you the "WTF?" look no matter what, and i have Darkthrone and Mayhem, so know from experience, don't have a Dark Funeral one,YET!
poppypills That’s a 1,000.00% fact. And a point that hadn’t quite been touched upon. We however clearly grew up in or around the same era. Nowadays however I see kids in my ghetto riding Skateboards with Thrasher T-Shirts. And those kids have some however become the cool kids. Old enough to be the children of those white hat ass holes from back in our day. Apparently “cool” skips a generation. And their children are their own Karma.
Silly questions, I bought a Soundgarden CD and me being black another black person asked me about it and said that's white boy music isn't it? And I told him no I bought it for $15 so it's MY MUSIC.
Having fine taste in music has got nothing to do with race. I packed my suitcase in a hotel room at Atlanta, for stop over flight with James Brown on the TV blasting. Just cause I listen to whatever is good, whenever. Specially if their genuine musicians
I mean, metal has nothing to do with race. If ya like it, ya like it man. Ya can’t change what you like. Honestly, tell him to worry about what he’s listening to, not what you are. Rock on, man!
1:31 to 1:49 - Chris Motionless explained the reason behind the band merch gatekeeping mindset SO perfectly. Thank you, Chris. Also, it's to me, at the very least, disappointing to walk up to someone because you see they're wearing a T-shirt of a band/singer/fandom/whatever that you like, happy that you can talk to them about something that you think you both like, only to hear, "oh, I just wear this because it looks cool". It's very different when they don't know that it represented the band you liked/fandom you're a part of, and then get curious and actually wanna learn more about it. _Those_ people I'm much less bridge troll-y about. They wanna learn about the thing you like and what it means to you! That's a form of respect!

I would be irritated by it. Mentally roll my eyes... when I was in school, "those kind of people" would make fun of me. They'd be like, 'oh are you Gothic'. No I'm a metalhead. I agree. If you are going to wear a band's shirt, AT LEAST be aware of who they are, what style they play, or at least know a few albums/songs. I noticed there are plenty of pre teen/teen girls who wear Metallica or Guns N Roses shirts and they have NO IDEA of what or who they are. At the same time, I noticed that plenty of these kids listen only to mumble rap or modern pop. I personally wouldn't want to wear a shirt from a band I don't know or I don't like, or wear a shirt "only for the logo." I met a hispanic kid back in high school who would wear a Megadeth shirt only bc of the design and not bc he knew or liked the band. This kid listened to mumble rap and that crap lol
I think the big thing for me is that when I see someone wearing a shirt of a band I like I get excited to have someone to talk about the music with. Since it is not super common it is nice to find more like-minded individuals, but disappointing when you don't get to follow through on that excitement.
Recently I back into metal, used to listen to angelmaker, upon a burning body, rings of Saturn, a night in texas, slayer, and a few other bands in highschool. As I grew older I started getting into hip hop for 3 years straight after living with my mom in the city, eventually came across city morgue around 2018 after I moved away, They got me back into the genre. Started listening to black sabbath, anthrax, and toxic holocaust around a month ago.still listen to hip hop, but Im more of a thrash rap listener now. Brings back memories writing this man, hoping to pick guitar back up after a year or so of putting it off. I always made it a rule for myself to personally not wear band shirts if artist I haven't listened to, as well as now. If I wear a band shirt it's after giving them serious listens to. Honestly even with rappers I never rep their merch without actually listening to them. Rock on y'all 🔥
Back in the 90s there was some conservative movement destroying CDs because they didn't like the messages they thought the artists were promoting. I distinctly remember Dave Mustaine talking about it because he had the best answer. "As long as you pay for it, I don't care what you do with it"
Same thing with star wars or video games. Back in the 80's and 90's, you would be a loser and a virgin for wearing shirts with those things Now it's pop culture 🖕
@Morbid Angel is better than Death how would you know? Just because he doesn’t make metal music doesn’t mean he doesn’t listen to it. You literally know nothing about him

It's crazy I see both sides. Like I don't care what other wear (granted I wouldn't consider myself a metal head though I love a lot of the music and my library is growing all the time thanks to it) but it's like when I was heavy into kpop and everyone made fun of us for listening to it but then they hit the mainstream and suddenly everyone's singing bts or nct. They watered down the experience violently until now it's no longer the same experience. It would suck if that happened to another community but on the bright side they're just taking the clothes rather than sullying the music.
It’s a double edge like Chris motionless said people should be able to wear w.e but at the same time it’s like if you don’t support something why wear it?
I'm not a Led Zeppelin fan but they have some cool shirts same with Genesis. All things said I would rather search and try to find something from bands that I like, that I would like people to know I like, bands who have an image and culture I associate with. The thing is to die hards wearing a Greatful Dead or ICP shirt is an expression of the lifestyle you like. It's like wearing a cowboy hat or leather biker jacket. Yes anyone can wear this but don't be surprised when people make assumptions based off your clothes.
because fashion doesn't have to be about any meaning, it can but it doesn't have to. If you think something looks nice or cool then wear it. Not everyone wants to make a statement or have any ulterior motive when they wear something
I know personally, I don't buy a music shirt if I don't know the artist just how it is for me. I've told my sister's that they shouldn't wear a band shirt if they're not ready to be questioned or embarrassed as one of the guys said.
It was the coolest thing to see my much younger sister wearing my old metal t-shirts. I got this Suffocation one from a friend and some random guy challenged me on that once. I liked it for the sentiment and the music, but I could not tell a single Suffocation song title. Is appreciation for the gift, the music genre overall and cool design not good enough reasons to wear it? I told him that I don't know a single song title, but I like the t-shirt, so he can fuck off. It wasn't me that looked embarrassed. Open your mind.
The problem is when people like me, get a guitar student who comes in with a Nirvana tee, and I say: "That's awesome, you're a fan of Nirvana. What's your favourite song of theirs?" And you're met with a look that says; "What's wrong with you?" If you're wearing a band tee, I'm going to assume that you're a fan, if you're not, then you're the idiot 🤣
At this point, whenever I see someone with a Nirvana I make it a point to approach them and ask their favorite song. I've gotten an answer from two. Out of at least 15.
I look at it this way, when I was a kid and one of the ways I got into certain bands was because of artwork whether it be their t-shirts or album covers. There was no internet there for me to search these bands and listen to their music online, all I had was metal magazines showing me pictures of bands and showing the artwork. So I think that today for a pop star or a so-called celebrity wearing a metal t-shirt, if a fan of theirs is even casually interested in metal sees that t-shirt and gets an idea to go on the internet and search this band out find out about them listen to them and then become a fan the more power to them! Sure it's annoying when a non fan of metal only wears the T-shirt because the artwork is cool, but the exposure can possibly lead to more rewarding things for someone else.
It irritates me when I see pop stars wear a metal shirt or someone that's not a metalhead. It's like a big fuck you because we were shit on in high-school for wearing that stuff and made fun of. But other than that Chris couldn't have said it any better.

The thing is that a lot of us grew up getting beaten and bullied regularly and relentlessly for being into those bands growing up, and to see those people take our passion and use it for a fashion statement is like re-opening old wounds. If they grew to like it, cool. We have something in common. But if they still hate the music but sport the merch, like...why? There's plenty of edgy looking shit they could wear, why choose to wear something you actively dislike? It's literally just surface level fashionista crap which is exactly what punk and metal are the antithesis of. It's like our scene is being appropriated by the people who embrace everything we oppose. No, it's not LIKE that. It IS that. If someone wants to change and become a more accepting person and they dig the music or can at least respect people who do, I'm all for welcoming them with open arms. But if they wear the attire of music they actively hate, then wtf are they even doing?
Yeah, you might be taking your life in your own hands wearing a Slayer shirt and not knowing the music. Slayer fans are a wee bit intense. Reminds me of when Jeff died, that fucked up church that protests at military funerals and whatnot, said they were going to make their presence known at Jeff's funeral...I figured, "That's cool, at least after all the news reports about what happened at the funeral, we'll never have to hear their shit again, because they are most definitely not going to survive Jeff's funeral with all the fans around.
100%. Also what Su-Metal said: Buying merchandise supports artists, and even if the people wearing the clothes don't know about the band behind it, they still gave them money and are carrying them out into the world for others to see. Something to consider: If a metalhead were to wear a pop musicians shirt, the pop musician wouldn't care because it's all about fame and making money. They would be happy with the free publicity, as there target audience is everyone. In contrast to this, authenticity and genuineness are an integral part of metal, therefor insincere displays are shunned upon within our scene.

Loved metal for most if not all of my life but i would so rock a Amy Winehouse shirt any time of the day, would have no problems with wearing a Wu-Tang shirt at any gig or Cannibal Ox or Steely Dan. Just because metal comes first doesn't mean you cannot like or openly support other genres artists.
I agree, if someone's wearing a band shirt just because they like the shirt, cool man. Wear whatever you want. But for me, if I'm wearing a bands shirt, like say Agalloch, I am wearing that shirt because I genuinely support that band. I probably saw that band live and it's definitely not a fashion statement for me. It's just what I like and I'm supporting that. Do what you want.
Personally, I'm old school about it. I wouldn't wear a shirt from a band I've never heard or didn't like. I think metal shirts as a fashion trend is fucking stupid honestly. Especially in this day and age where Rock & Metal is not as big as it was back in the 90s-00s, some people can get excited to see a band they recognize via shirt and think it could be fun to try and talk about the music with the person for a quick minute or two. It was not about proving superiority, at least not for the majority. Yeah you had some elitists here and there but most of the time it was just about having fun and chatting a bit about the music.

Seriously. It’s just an accessory to these swine

There was no internet there for me to search these bands and listen to their music online, all I had was metal magazines showing me pictures of bands and showing the artwork. "I honestly couldn't care less if non Metal heads wanna wear band shirts"
to me that means 2 completely different things.
the second means that YOU COULDN'T CARE LESS / aka.. you couldn't give a fuck
the first means You do give a fuck , so to speak
which is why it sounds weird
because you're basically saying that I COULD CARE LESS
which means you could so... you're giving it some importance
the second means you are giving it such little importance that you can't give it any less
THAT'S HOW I SEE IT
which is why i said what i said
Now.. I also accept that in common speak people are not so technically correct, but , again.. that's how i was taught that saying in 2nd grade or thereabouts
I've never heard anyone in australia when they didn't give a fuck say... i COULD care less
to me thats' weird
it would be on the same level as saying "I'm not having breakfast now" (While having breakfast)
so... Am i wrong or.... ??? I don't know
maybe it's just an Aussie thing..
what are you thoughts ?
You put a SLAYER shirt on you're signing up for all kinds of shit. Loved that.
That is why although I listen to slayer I will never EVER! Wear a slayer shirt because if anyone gives me shit I will not be responsible for homicide that I commit sepultura on the other hand Max and Igor are sweethearts I buy they're shirts and wear them
yeah which are slayer neckbeard fans interrigating you bout what songs you know
The thing is that a lot of us grew up getting beaten and bullied regularly and relentlessly for being into those bands growing up, and to see those people take our passion and use it for a fashion statement is like re-opening old wounds.
"What's your favorite Slayer song?"
Umm....."Slayer."
it would be worst if the answer is Ummm.."Pentagram"? XD
Still a good answer.
Slayer is always a good answer.
To everything.

Statistically you stop listening to new bands somewhere in your 20s so your era of music would be from when you were around 13 to 25
I don't even like Motionless in White, but Chris nailed it
Same here
100%. Also what Su-Metal said: Buying merchandise supports artists, and even if the people wearing the clothes don't know about the band behind it, they still gave them money and are carrying them out into the world for others to see. So be it financially or in terms of popularity, those shirts still help artists, no matter who is wearing them!
Thats because although you dont his band you both share the same passion
@@cubbykovu8955 absolutely, there's a ton of ppl I respect and don't like the band, or sadly, the other way around. That's a part of the metalhead connection, respect where it's due, we're all here for the same reason \m/
Not into them, but I loved his Kittie shirt.
Is soo strange to see Phil alive and kicking and we don't have Dime or Vinny anymore. Who would have thought 🤔 I'm happy he "cleaned" up. Message in blood was his vocal masterpiece.
All I ask from people that do this, is that they don’t get mad or embarrassed when I ask what album or song they like. I simply just want to see if it’s something I have in common with them.

See them as walking billboards. They paid for the shirts, not only the band made more money, but they also got free advertisements. That's sweet!
Thank you
but what kind of metal head are u if ur wearing a pop t shirt
@@dannysmetalden3343 You would still be a metalhead.
You think Rob Halford would care if someone who was not a metal fan wore a Priest shirt?
@@dannysmetalden3343 One with taste.
I leave this comment because you mention Agalloch.
I will not wearing pantera shirt before learning all of their mainstream guitar riffs. I think I’m bit extreme with this phenomenon 😄
Gotta like your comment because you’re a fan of Agalloch. Fuck yeah!
For unknown bands I'd buy their shirts but for big bands like Metallica and stuff the bootleg shirts people sell look very nice already
Omg thanks for reminding me that Agalloch still exists! I’d totally forgotten!
Personally, I'm old school about it. I wouldn't wear a shirt from a band I've never heard or didn't like. I think metal shirts as a fashion trend is fucking stupid honestly. If I see someone wearing a Slayer t-shirt, and I ask their favorite Slayer song and they're completely fucking clueless and can't answer me, you're damn right I'm gonna point and laugh! They'll never hear the end of it!
It's like wearing an orange vest at home depot or a red shirt at target.

It always was a fashion trend. Since the 90s models, actors and fashionistas have been wearing those shirts.
This is actually a way that metal can become more popular again. Honestly, today, people need more Heavy Metal in their souls, it builds character and gives strenght.

@@Bixnood69 I guess some metalheads ask what their favorite song is as a way of starting conversation.
@@Bixnood69 Sounds like someone is insecure. It's pretty much what Stonk Guy 05 said, band shirts used to be a thing that was used to discuss about music.

I agree that non-metal heads wearing metal shirts is a short-lived trend. It’s not worth getting super pissed about it. I kinda get it though. But hopefully the folks wearing the shirts might actually listen to it and learn to love it. There’s bigger problems in the world than a fucking t-shirt.
Pretty much. Personally, I wouldn't wear a shirt for a band I don't like, but if you like the shirt, why not? Rainbow's Rising, for instance, makes for a great shirt, whether you like them or not.

That's because it's community, tribal thing. Back in 80's and 90's only most hardcore fans wore band shirts.
It's gatekeeping at its blandest which has plagued many a hobby.

Wonder why no one brought up the fact that plenty of metalheads can be seen wearing other genres of music shirts, especially rapper and hip hop artists logos. I have to agree with the very last statement of this video. Fuck it who cares. Wear what you want.
