I've never heard any of these rules, Jack Skellington is just trying to ruin Christmas
"only if you've seen the band live" - I guess that's the most debatable rules, aside from "only one genre".
That'd mean newer generations aren't allowed to represent some of their most favorite band's, just because these dinosaurs are either too old or simply dead.
Shit I guess I should throw away all my Dio patches, all my Motörhead patches, all my Black Sabbath patches, and all of my slayer patches
Also it's not like some people are simply not well off enough financially to afford a 90€ ticket to their favourite artist

For me personally it's important that I sew them on myself, because for me it's about the personal connection I have with the patches and the vest and the time invested, but I'm obviously not gonna judge anyone else for not doing it that way. It's your vest, you get to decide the rules.

I don't blame you! Get those patches on by any means necessary. When I got my first ever leather jacket, I used to just glue them on because i cba sewing through real leather 😄 no regrets, that would been such a pain.

Mmm.. glue is ok for leather patches but not for basic patches. It comes right through. Best bet, get some one to sew them on for ya. 👍

Omg! Never washing it! After Download 2023 just could not leave that but I was ours on a regular basis. Sad thing though my cure patch faded but the rest were fine. I have sewn all my partners patches on! I saw something really lovely at Bloodstock 2023, a guy was sewing some patches (I assume he had just got from one of the stalls) onto his jacket in the arena just chilling on the grass in the sunshine. I'm with you guys on all of this.
I love it when you see the biggest, hairyest metalhead dude calmly sewing at fests 😊 Something sp wholesome about it.

You guys really made me feel better about this topic I was scared to put certain bands I liked when I start on a battle vest bc some i like aren’t exactly metal you know like suicidal tendencies or outta pocket 🙏

I think these rules are intended as a starting place and that's why their was multiple "don't be a dick, have fun" rules.

I'm still collecting patches, and bollocks to one style of music. I've got Maiden, Marley, Muse and Madness amongst others. Not to mention the vegan patches and random stuff like my cub scout badges from the early 80s 😂

Could not agree more that a battle jacket is meant to be a second skin of your personality. It's meant to invite others to be like, "Oh! You love that thing?! I also love that thing! Let's talk about that thing that we both love!" Sure, bands and music are the most traditional, but go ahead and put movie, tv show, or cartoon patches on if you've got them! Who cares?? It's uniquely yours!

I have rules, but they're for ME. My 1st one is: A band may only be represented once per jacket, at least in terms of patches. I may have a pin of the same band as a patch though, but I try not to.

I definitely broke rules my big main patch is death never seen them live cause chuck died when I was 6 but death is my favourite I got a black sabbath and a ozzy patch never seen them and I got mix genres of metal all over
My partner and I have a game for our jackets…that we can only get the patch if we’ve seen the band for 20 minutes…but that’s just our little thing :-)

Rules no. As suggestions yes agree. The sewing part is a maybe, safety pins are ok (expect to loose some). Staples not if your going near people. Spikes ok assuming venues allow them. Personally hate them in the pit otherwise love them. You are a "fake" if you but patches of bands you never seen, but who cares you like them. As a teenager, you have to start somewhere. Back piece are normally two big pieces, be original place multiple instead at the end no rules, just imitating others makes it pointless.

these rules are utter rubbish especially when interacting with irl metal/punk community so many people with jackets nowadays don't even define themselves under one genre. I've seen patches of all kinds on people's jackets i love to put political stuff on mine and the rule about only wearing them to shows is rubbish i wear mine whenever i can i've even had friends say they've never seen me without it on!! the only rule i'd have about battle jackets is do what you want it's your jacket

Oh man you guys are f****** awesome that's why I've been looking for I've been looking for f****** people like you you know I'm a real f****** metalheads man come on I have my battle Jack and I want you to listen to this this will blow you f****** people way off now I have my battle jacket the person who made it was 1982 I bought the battle jacket in believe it or not the jacket was are sprayed iron maiden I went to all their shows and then I lied when I was working and I was sick so I could go to the shows I had an autographed and I are sprayed clear gloss inside the jacket so I can have the autographs my battle jacket is on a different jacket now because it's shrunk because so I put it right now on a different jacket I wear it every time and I don't give a f*** what people say that's my battle jacket I love iron maiden I love my skulls buttons and all that that's me keep up the good work send me more letters in my email I would love to hear you guys you guys are the best f****** sick people in the world where were friends like you and where I'm looking for keep up the good work f****** yeah heavy metal rules
