One of the best game characters ever. Naughty Dog knew exactly what they were doing when they challenged players to empathise with her, and how some players would fail that challenge.
Abby, her father, and the fireflies were all hypocrites. Probably the worse character created in the whole series. There is nothing at all to like about her.
@@seanbennettsr.8604 don't get me wrong Joel deserved what he got. It is stated several times in the second game. Even Ellie says he hurt a lot of people. But Abby killing him because he killed her father. But can not see he killed her father because he was going to kill the one person that meant everything to Joel. And to do it by the most brutal way shows she is a hypocrite. I have 2 daughters one is not biologically mine. But if someone was going to kill either of them for what ever reason they are going down.
I like Ellie and Abby and Joel. They all killed for love and I'm glad Ellie stopped the cycle. I don't understand why it is a competition between Ellie and Abby. Can't they both be interesting, complicated characters? Owen has some great lines in the game. When he saw that Joel was part of a community he said, "I want what you want but not at any cost." Abby didn't care what killing Joel might cost. She lost everything for revenge, just like Ellie almost did. She blames Ellie for the death of her friends but if she'd walked away, they would be alive. Owen asks Abby if he should go after the people who killed his parents too. EVERYONE has lost people. EVERYONE has committed moral atrocities. And Abby heard her father's conversation about secretly killing Ellie for the good of the world. That trying to find a cure might absolve them from the evil they'd done. From Joel's POV Ellie was the only thing good about the world. Ellie and Abby are mirrors of each other in avenging their fathers and Abby mirrors Joel as her world falls apart and she anchors her life to Lev, forsaking her allegiance to the Wolves. There are no easy answers from my POV. I like the fan theory that in the end Ellie is living back in Jackson and just goes back to the house to say goodbye to Joel's guitar. To symbolically put him to rest.
I like how how Abby initially stopped the cycle of revenge (because of Lev) ... But Ellie doesn't "We've got a family. She doesn't get to be more important than that... No..." -Dina
@David Mutchler because its about stopping the cycle of violence. And if it makes some people feel better abby chose not to get her revenge on Ellie for killing most of her friends.
@David Mutchler Abby was punished enough. Most of her friends died. She went on an extreme journey to resolve the guilt of killing Joel by rescuing 2 children betraying her own group. She was captured, tortured, and starved for nearly 2 months. In a sense, Ellie realized she wouldn't have felt any better killing Abby just like Abby realized too late that she didn't feel any better killing Joel AND she lost everything because of it
I have to admit as much as I hated Abby after the leaks, I don’t dislike her any more after playing the game , especially after seeing her relationship with Mel. Plus her combat gameplay is so much fun
@Reloaded Past that's a great analysis! i think something along the same lines. i honestly didn't like mel, at all. she was a bitch, and she repeatedly needlessly risked the life of her unborn child.
Agreed.. the first time i played abby, i was like wtf.. buat after that im starting to love her.. the same for manny.. when he spit on joel, i was like f*** you dude.. when he was killed, i was like wtf naughty dog
I absolutely love Abby's story. She was consumed by revenge and ended up making something horrible. She had nightmares about Joel, and needed to do something good to make up for that. Then we enter on a really good and compelling adventure where Abby tries to help two enemies, Yara and Lev in order to redeem herself, and also learn different perspectives. Our enemies have families, they have friends, they have names, they have feelings, they are people, and this is also a messege to the player. If you let go of your thirst for revenge, if you let go of the hate you have for your enemies, if you try to look from their side of the story, if you actully try to forget the past and have empathy like a human being, you will be happy, you will be a better person. If you don't, you will be stuck on a never ending cycle of revenge and violence, a cycle where few actully can avoid, like me and a lot o brazilians actully... The last of us 2 is really special to me, too bad it's receiving so much hate. Also sorry about my english, i'm brazilian :3
@UnbeatableSheep Because Abby manages to move on from her vengeance, Ellie does not. Even when letting Abby go, she is still consumed by her vengeance, and has lost everything for it.
Idk, alot of society is apparently also just not mature or tolerant enough to accept that women can be physicially strong. (which is a shame, in our time …)
She didn’t really care anymore who she was the fireflies was gone at least in her head which made her useless not to mention her people died for Joel to save her I don’t think she really blamed her I just think this girl killed my friends
She probably didnt care, so what? Ellie saying she is immune won't change Ellie killed her friends/family and there was no more fireflies around (she thought) all she wanted is revenge, because in Abby's vision Ellie was a monster, and she was lol, both are monsters for each other
@@San-cb9mj oh because Abby didn’t do the same? But I think both of them are misinformed of what’s going on. Ellie has no idea why Abby killed Joel. Joel has A Idea on why Abby killed him. and Abby doesn’t know why Ellie is coming after her.
Abby with just a single pistol won the fight with ellie equipped with a full backpack. AND she showed mercy to ellie. When ellie forced abby to fight at the beach, abby still had the energy to throw hands even after being held captive and tortured for 2 months. Now that's an absolute total badass!!! I bet most folks didn't realize that she's a deuteragonist. Alot of people just can't see her point of view/where she's coming from so I understand the hate. Can't wait for part 3!!!!!!!!
"Abby haters don't understand empathy" Five reason why empathizing with ABby is asking people to empathize with a psychopath 1) she dragged her crew 500+ miles for reckless revenge based off a tip. Then after figuring out Jackson was a huge town and risk, instead of retreating she was going to blow her groups position and her life by trying to do it alone. 2) She tortured Joel, who saved her life without hesitance in front of his loved ones, Even if joe killed her father 4 years god, it's a bit insane to think this would make your father proud. She knew he was making a controversial decision on a young girl's life, and no one forced her to watch Jerry die 3) She validated her dad in thed ecision to kill Ellie without choice or even allowing closure with Ellie's loved ones prior 4) She gets dry fucked by an ambivalent close friend with a pregnant girlfriend. This actually isn't her fault. Its neil's because of obvius he wanted to let us know his fetish, Thanks neil. Didn't need this to further the plot, and it certainly doesn't make me empathize with Abby. ["It's kind of what i described: i wanted people to hate her immensely. Where they think they want to do horrible things to her" -Neil Druckmann] Abby actually feels like the manifestation of psychopathic torture that Neil wanted to put on players. Maybe he should see a therapist. 5) Was completely ready and happy to knowingly kill a pregnant woman (until her new BFF gave her a look (?), but it doesnt take away from teh fact she wanted to], credits: reddit u/yellowdai
@Suraj Seepersad the major problem is i buyed tlou 2 for playing ellie or joel or anyone, but they made me play as ABBY, joel's killer, for 10-11 hours, and i hated that so much.. for real, plus ellie suffered much more than abby
@Suraj Seepersad At first I didn't understand why all that hate against the last of us, but now I'm glad, just a shit story, I almost played more time with abby than ellie, I can even accept Joel's death (also if that's shit) but what I just can't accept is having to play the character who killed my all-time favorite character of all games, and they even try to make me like Abby, fuck you naughty dog.
The more I play this game, the more I like Abby. Second playthrough is really starting to make sense. The structure so unique and I can see people arguing for 1/10 or 10/10. What you take from this game is what you see it: a story that completely failed to capitalize what made the first so captivating, or a gem that blurs the lines of morality and violence. Who's the protagonist? Who's the villain? Stories like these don't come around often, and every comment, meme, and paragraph made with this game in mind proves that this is something truly special.
this one for me was less boring than the first one i didnt like the 1st one as joel was selfish i agree they killed joel very quickly which is bad for fans I had alot of fun in this gameplay Story was good because in real life a raised kid will know what to do in the end but they shouldnt have included that she went to live and forget all of this then suddenly someone comes and tell them to revenge they should have ended it at the first fight by letting her go and the game ends there jesse didnt deserve to die at all it was bad choice and done so fast biting 2 fingers out and whatever wasnt nesassary at all
Part II was so preachy and the message was too obvious. If you needed to play as Abby to learn to learn any of these lessons, yikes. There are no heros in this world, that's kinda the point. We're not really meant to root for anyone. I rooted for Ellie up until she gave up Dina to seek revenge. I will be rooting for Lev until the world hardens him and he becomes hardened and savage.
I think people are really missing the big picture and message of this game. Revenge, hate and the cycle of violence. It is never-ending. I personally loved this game. But that's just my opinion.
i think the message is poignant (especially given the world we live in today) but it lacks any nuance and emotive meaning. tlou1 was a landmark in storytelling and each character represented something unique. beyond abby, joel, ellie and lev these characters are just empty vessels. the idea is great, the execution is lacking. it's a real shame, in my opinion.
02:07:20 is one of my favorite video game moments of all time. the sheer hatred in Abby’s eyes was so clear and present that i literally had to stop watching for a good few minutes to collect myself, because i knew with a look like that… a lot of people are gonna die.
Tbh, I liked Abby’s missions more than Ellie’s. Could be just cause they gave her a lot of the more combat, epic style ones like The Hospital and The Island. She definitely redeemed herself by the end for me, and I’m glad her and Lev escaped. Now they can be in the 3rd one and continue the story.
@@snappyego908 Yeah, but I think it’s a good story because I DIDNT like Abby the whole time, not until she saves Lev from the Wolves. I feel like they made her do this horrible thing at the beginning of the game for it to play out that now she is in the exact same shoes as Joel was, and causes her to understand that the cycle of the revenge of is pointless. Hence why she keeps letting Ellie go. Idk, I know people didn’t like it and obviously they have a right to, but I enjoyed the game and the story a lot. The ending in this one hit me harder than the first one. The gorgeous design and brutal fun combat help it a lot too
Abby is a perfectly written character. People claims she's pure evil where she's not. They use her actions to wanting Dina dead after finding out she was pregnant as an evidence for this but she was angry and upset about finding out what happened to her friends. Her emotions there was pure rage so her impulse is to just kill. But Lev didn't really do anything but to call her name. This immediately snap her back. Knowing that killing them for revenge won't bring back her friends. And now, she had to take care of Lev, the person who Finally stopped her from having nightmares of her dad. It's a parallel with Joel story in away. Sarah's death turned Joel to a cold hearted killer like what Jerry's death to Abby. The two of them finally broke out of their shell after meeting a kid in need. Someone they can take care of and protect. Someone who can make the whole damn apocalypse worth living again. Abby is a complex character and people hate her solely because she killed Joel. And nothing else. People claim she's boring when she's badass, doesn't take shit to anyone and one of the WLFS best fighters. People claims there is no way she should be that buff or strong but failed to realise that she wasn't always like that. She only put on some muscles after her father's death. You can see their setup on their base. That Gym is amazing and if you don't built up some muscle after focusing most years on training then you're an idiot. People claims she's evil when her actions, saving Yara and Lev prove that she's not. That she's just a person who did bad things but is trying to do less of those in their situation. People claim she didn't need to torture Joel but failed to realise that Joel tortured people all the time. When Ellie tortures Nora you can see the hesitation and regret in her strikes and the effect of it after. In contrast to this, Joel does it so easy in the first game like it was like breathing for him. It's clear that she's the protagonist of her own story and people only hate her because they purely love Joel and can't move on or they are just Antiswj snowflakes who put SJWs tag on anything these days. There was nothing woke or preachy about the game. Just get out of your rabbit hole and you'll see that.
Now that is a nice detailed look on Abby as a character. And if I’m being honest I kinda like her character as she has been through hell and crap just as Ellie has, loosing people she cared for and now having to take care of someone. And while yes Joel May have been killed by her in a lame way of twd Glenn’s death, she isn’t heartless like most say, saving lev, protecting him from the wolves and others, sparing tommy and Ellie the first time, not killing Dina and Ellie the second time, and when she sees Ellie the third time, instead of wanting to kill her or say to leave, accepts the help, and even refused to fight, only fighting for levs safety. The only odd things I can point out is her friends shooting Joel in the leg even though he only said his first name, if he did say his full name than sure, and not all her friends were that great, some I pick were Owen,Nora and manny.
I just think the pacing could've been a lot better. I don't have an issue with Joel dying, that was expected. It was how and when in the story he died. I just didn't care for Abby and her friends at all because they gave me no room to care until after they killed off a character I did care about. And then with the constant jump arounds, you had to connect the story timeline by yourself, instead of the game just telling it chronologically. This is like if, in the MCU, if Mysterio killed Iron Man before Infinity War and then we just got Mysterio's back story...I wouldn't care. I think if this game had better pacing, it would definitely be an S but because of the reasons stated above...I give it a C.

Marvelous Meh That might work for some people but we all grew to love Joel and wanted to see him in this game so when he dies instantly most people got pissed and weren’t capable of feeling empathy for her because she ruined what they expected of the game. I ended up liking her at the end but doing the fake marketing and killing Joel was just way too risky and was obviously not going to go through to everybody. That’s why they should have done abbys story first.
@@marvelousmeh2077 No the game failed. Even Itsreal85 who hasn't slandered Abby at every turn and actually shows a liking for her, screamed to be killed by Tommy when he figured out Tommy was the sniper. The problem this game has is expecting us to understand Abby and her motivations after she murders the beloved main character who we spent hrs growing close to as well as watching him come back from the brink of darkness thanks to Ellie, second chance at being a father and a second chance to be happy. The series goes from depicting such a positive part of human interaction, to showing some of it's most darkest. However instead of allowing people to go through that with the characters they became attached to they are forced to be teathered to the being that causes this darkness and suffering onto the characters people loved. This kind of story could have worked as the first part of the series or a movie, but not in a video game where a player has to propel a character to complete their goals. No one bought this game to see Joel get murdered uncharacteristically and then play as his killer who was designed to outshine the other person we came for, Ellie. It all culminates in the theatre battle where Abby murders Jessy, shoots Tommy, and then utterly victimizes Ellie and almost kills her girlfriend, knowing she is pregnant. While the player is actually invested in getting revenge alongside Ellie, they are dealt another loss with jessy and then abruptly snatched away from Ellie to see why Abby is so awesome and not wrong for 11 hrs. Nobody really chastises Abby for her reckless actions and she is ultimately vindicated in killing Joel as it is Ellie's coming for revenge at the end, that ends up saving her and Lev(who is a great character unfortunately used to make the player sympathize with Abby). Meanwhile Ellie loses absolutely everything her vengeance is inherently wrong compared to Abby's. At the very end she loses her fingers, and the ability to play the guitar, a skill that Joel taught her. all the while letting Abby go and in the grand scheme of everything validating her murder of Joel. And what makes everything even worse the story is framed to make Joel out to be a selfish asshole who "had it coming" when in reality, the fireflies more specifically Abby's father, was going to cut Ellie's skull open without consent from her nor Joel, and wouldn't even answer if he would be able to do so to his own child. Abby witnessed this and still had the nerve to seek out and murder a man who wished to protect someone he saw as a daughter. On top of that there was an extra recording in the original game on ps3 that revealed that there were 11 or 12 people immune like Ellie that the fireflies had operated on and gained nothing. The last of us 2 is Abby's story featuring Joel and Ellie, who were used to do all of the leg work for promoting this game. No one bought this game to watch Joel be murdered so uncharacteristically, and be unfairly( unfair because of the changes naughty dog made In order to create this strained dynamic) emotionally abused by Ellie. And when Joel was murdered, no one wanted to be dragged away from Ellie to play as Joel's killer for 11 hrs just to get back to the point u left off... to utterly destroy Ellie as Abby. That is just horrible story direction and writing, They even give Abby like 7 or 8 guns, and more upgrades in order to subtly sway the player into thinking she is cool. The story is objectively shit and tone def in terms of crafting a character and player connection.
I genuinely adored Abby! Her story and character is so complex that all the parallels are just mind-blowing! I love the symbolism of her dreams and the fact that she's a reflection of Ellie and Joel.
@Tevin Grouse Exactly! Just watching both of their societies die in a senseless war felt like these two were the only survivors who just got out of literal hell! :0
Its ironic because Abby and Lev weren't really suppose to be a copy of Ellie and Joel but to also mirror understanding and empathy between two people on opposite sides. (Her group vs Scars) The game works because her journey is based on love and redemption unlike Ellie who's journey is based on Revenge and Hate.
@@potatoesblink3299 kinda ironic some people blabbering about forgiveness and redemption while he or she never know about it. if you really know then what is forgiveness and revenge? do you ever feel it and overcome it soy boy?

Idk why but I still think Abby is still a good character and have a great story, because she wanted to kill Joel to revenge her father's death, she hated heights, and she loved Owen.
I’ve played the game maybe 5 times now, and I honestly prefer her character to Ellie’s. I like both characters, don’t get me wrong, but Abby’s story just resonated more with me. Keep in mind, she wasn’t some evil person from the jump. She seemed like a happy (relative to the world she was living in) person, until her father was murdered by Joel. That started her desire for revenge, which probably drove her forward in her becoming a Seraphite killing machine. Once she is able to let go of her desire for revenge and leave Seattle with Lev, she seemed like she was on the path to becoming more like the person she once was.
At the very end I was praying like ellie wouldn't kill Abby. I was about to cry with abby drowning. She doesn't deserve to die. I hope last of us 3 is about Abby and Lev searching for the fireflies. I think ellie's story is over.
RalDal well, we know they found the fireflies, the question is what happens next. I, too, hope the game focuses on Abby and Lev, but I also hope Ellie will be a part of it. After all, she is still the only immune person in the world (that we know of), and Abby knows she’s still alive. I doubt she would hunt after Ellie, but maybe Ellie will be the one to find the Fireflies. Lots of possibilities, and such a beautiful game! I’ve been stuck on it for the past month now, give or take! Gonna keep beating Grounded until I’m confident enough to do a grounded/Permadeath run.
SkeletalSounds _ Well, you’re not alone. It seems like a fair amount of people disliked her character, though I wonder how many of those people actually played the game (to completion). Just out of curiosity, what do you dislike about her character?
Also, I think Abby was actually considering for a moment to stop, but she realized that Joel would have died later due to the head trauma, so she decided to kill him so he would not have died more painfully. This would be pointed out due to her shaking her head before the final strike like an act of disgust, and when she paused for that moment she was thinking to herself.
Possibly, but I think maybe she was convincing herself that that was the right move. I think she paused because the satisfaction she wanted was given and maybe for a second, it wasn't right what she was doing. But idk.
@@Ozbeta44 That makes a lot more sense, but could she have paused because she actually wasn't feeling the satisfaction she thought she would have? Then that final strike, the look on her face as if she is sad and frustrated that her problems and trauma have not been resolved from this murder. Then back in Seattle she makes it look like to her friends it was worth it to kill Joel though she is hiding the fact that she is still as broken and conflicted she already was.
@colemarheine3503 Yeah, I'm with ya on that. She definitely was putting on a front for sure. I agree. She definitely wasn't satisfied that's for sure. But I like the development she had. And I think how she felt is how ellie feels at the end of the game. Like "this will bring me no peace." Great character overall.
I pointed this out and almost got Joeled by someone. But I feel like that last was pretty painful, it is such a difficult scene to watch, nevertheless she got her revenge, I suppose? I feel bad for Ellie.

It is only normal for people to feel angry after they suffer from losing one they care for. It can be used to help gain benefits, but it is easy to get lost in it, corrupted and destroyed. Ellie and Abby are both prime examples of this. This is just logic and true to a point but, it takes someone who keeps their emotions in check and live by the moral standards of reality to complete this game. It is not healthy to cling onto these characters as golden idols you live under, especially after they die. People need to accept that death whether natural or caused by someone is part of the reality of the world we live in.

I don’t hate her for that. I was sad Joel died, but I reconcile that was narratively sensical and sound. He brought it in himself with his choices. Ellie is not a psychopathic killer. If you think about it, with the exception of Abby’s friends, the rest of her kills are strictly self-defense. Her main enemies are the WLF, and from the very start they go and blew up their horse, and a few minutes later she was gonna get directly executed along with Dina. Right from here to the end of her story, multiple squads of WLF armed to the teeth and with dogs are searching for her with the “shoot then ask questions” mindset. So I honestly do not see anything wrong here. Abby in contrast was more than lucky to reach Joel with zero effort. He just happened to be the one who saved her life. As she said, she was more than willing to capture one of Jackson’s patrols for information. It’s worth noticing how different Jackson is from the WLF. Tommy, Jackson’s leader, offered both Abby and her group supplies and shelter, in contrast with the WLF xenophobic, murderous tendencies towards outsiders. Jackson people are benevolent, while the WLF is basically a fascist paramilitary group. Again, Abby did not wreck havoc in Jackson due to pure luck. Well, I wouldn’t call it “spared” in the strict sense. Ellie was an innocent witness. In fact, it was the salt lake crew’ fault as of why Ellie was capable of entering to Joel’s murder scene. If Jordan would have guarded the surrounding area as Owen ordered him, none of this would have happened. Even Nora remarks this: “WE didn’t think anyone was gonna show up!”. The second time at the theater, Abby wasn’t the one who spared Ellie. It was Lev. Abby didn’t want to ruin her bond with Lev, and she knew this was all her fault by brutally and unnecessarily torture Joel to death instead of giving him a quick death.
I am not Abby’s biggest fan, nor I do really “love’’ her as a character (Killing Joel was “justified” in her head, maybe), but after facing the rat king just to save one stranger of the opposite warring faction... my god, this chick is unstoppable when she puts her mind on it. That speaks volumes from her. By the end of the game, I believe she just suffered enough. Killing her would only have made Ellie the same as her. In the end, not only Abby got defeated physically, but spiritually. Ellie’s mind was “I will not become you. If I do. I will never know If I really did forgive Joel”. Abby has now a second chance to grow from ruthless killer (just like Ellie, Joel and pretty much every FUCKING person in this series) to a more benevolent person, along with Lev. I’d like to see a part 3 where adult JJ decided to join the fireflies, Ellie decides to go after him (at the end of the game she writes on her diary: FUCK THE FIREFLIES, so I’m pretty sure she does not wanna know shit about them since Joel’s death...”, and then expand on Abby and Lev within the fireflies community. Maybe Abby gets to see how the fireflies are not really the “saviors” of humanity she thought and turns up against them... along with Ellie and JJ. That would be dope.
Abby saving Yara and Lev was pretty much her subconscious way to deal with the guilt of killing a man who saved her life even if he killed her dad. It is not a coincidence that Yara and Lev save Abby's life like Joel did. When a sworn enemy saved her the second time, this time she chose to replay the favor and use it as a way to connect with her enemies to understand them. I think deep down Abby realized that killing Joel at the end was a bad and wrong.
@@colemarheine3503 when lev asks abby why she saved him and yara she said that she needed to “lighten the load.” this was before her friends died (that she knew of) so i think she just genuinely felt guilty and wanted to get her humanity back
Abby was a damn good character. Ppl just mad she cracked Joel’s skull open🤣. I loved Joel to, don’t get me wrong. But the story direction they decided for him, never really bothered me while playing. Honestly would have felt like TLOU 1.5 if it was yet another Ellie and Joel game 🤷♂️
Thank you so much. I love it when other people can think for themselves and juge characters on all their actions and past. Not just one thing, she did the exact same thing ellie wanted to, except ellie showed no humanity and Abby showed mercy, 3 times!
People hate her because they only learned about her motivation and who the character actually was 6 or so hours after she caved Joel’s skull in if the game opened with the start of her backstory people would be less mad about Joel’s death and kind of understand why she did what she did
@@jameswilliets8117 I completely agree, the only thing they fd up is the order of the story. 1) ellie and Joel museum 2) Abby waking up in camp after a flashback from finding her dad and get stuff to head out with the ones going to Jackson. 3) ellie and Dina on patrol and flashback fight with Joel about him lying to her. 4) Abby heading out with Owen and finding Joel. Flashback from her dad goofing around with her. And end it with Joel saying "just say whatever you rehearsed" and the smack. 5) ellie finding Joel up until Dina and her are in the theatre. 6) Abby going to look for Owen, flashback Owen. and finding the scar kids 7) ellie in Seattle up until she smacks the bejesus out of that black girl. Abby's best friend. 8) Abby trying bonding with lev and getting supplies up until she is fixed and lev gets out to talk to their mother. 9) ellie going to the aquarium and killing Owen and his pregnant gf. And being found by Tommy and Jessie right until she opens the door and you see Jessie on the floor. 10) Abby finding lev and seeing his sister die, going to the aquarium, finding Owen dead and killing Jessie, "killing" Tommy and sparing Dina and ellie 11) ellie's trick happy end 12) Abby and lev finding fireflies and getting captured 13) ellie finding Abby. And the end of the game
Great storytelling. You go from hating her to cheering for her. They turned Ellie into an absolute grudge queen until the very end and I STILL found myself rooting for Abby.
I was rooting Abby more than Ellie because how villainous Ellie was because of her vengeance. She was extremely rude and arrogant towards her friends especially with Dina and calling her a burden and saying mean things behind her back. It reminds me of how Joel was in the first game how arrogant and rude he was an especially trying to get rid of Ellie to the fireflies and he also believed the fireflies could do a cure on her. No offense I also see how rude and arrogant Abby was when she found out her dad died by the hands of Joel.
Pretty interesting how my perspective concerning this game and especially Abby has changed. First was hyped. Then after the leaks was pissed because of what seemed to me a toxic agenda and a man-hating protagonist - which turned out to be false. Then decided to give it a try because I enjoyed the first one so much. Then I was shocked and disgusted at the Joel scene. Finally got to play the whoe thing and warmed considerably to the game and the character while still seeing many flaws with both. Quite the emotional rollercoaster, at least... I suggest everyone should give the game a try.
"What if I'm wrong? What if these men do not need to die? What if they mean well? Misguided perhaps, but pure in motive?" - Altair: Assassins Creed 2007 This is how I felt playing through this game...
I fucking hated Abby at the start. I hated when I first had to play her, but the more I saw from her perspective, the more she grew on me and the more I understood her. She is now my favorite. I think there are no good guys in this game. No one is perfect and everyone has done terrible things. People don't want to hear it, but that's how their world is. I just wish people would understand that because this game is getting hate for all the wrong reasons.
yeah ellie is kinda like abby for killing owen when abby killed joel manny wanted to kill ellie and tommy too but owen defended them just like abby's joel helped her and she just killed him like that so yeah i wish owen survived till the end

abby isn't really a villian if anything she's the opposite because while yes she did kill joel but all she knew was that man killed her father she didn't know anything else about him then she didn't kill ellie and even when ellie came after her and she could've killed dina and ellie she didn't (but i think that was because of lev) and in thye end she refused to fight ellie until forced to i mean she helped other people as well so am glad baby doesn't die cos but am still pissed at how much ellie suffered maybe the third game (if there is one in the making) might finally give both baby and ellie a decent ending
Five reason why empathizing with ABby is asking people to empathize with a psychopath 1) she dragged her crew 500+ miles for reckless revenge based off a tip. Maybe he should see a therapist. 5) Was completely ready and happy to knowingly kill a pregnant woman (until her new BFF gave her a look (?), but it doesnt take away from teh fact she wanted to], credits: reddit u/yellowdai
@@jacked9055 I agree to an extent. Remember that she felt extreme guilt for killing Joel especially considering that he and Tommy saved her. It completely destroyed her relationship with the people around her. Manny, Nora and Jordan were sadistic fucks and deserved to die a slow and painful death. But Owen and Mel were very hesitant in taking part of killing Joel especially given the fact that they watched his family ( Tommy and Ellie) watch and struggle and cry in pain. Abby realizes that killing Joel only made her feel worse about her dad's death which is why she goes on her journey of redemption. She got what she deserved, she lost what she lost, so she didn't need to die. So hate her all you want. I don't hate her but I still resent her. I know I'm a little all over the place with my speech but understand what I'm trying to say
If ellie killed abby then she will be living on alert because lev wants her head after or dina or the child unless she kills lev too but what do we get from killing them? satisfaction? nothing will change yet she killed all those people just to get to her then backout thats why people are hating it
@@psychedelicyeti6053 she will be on people's list everyone is on someone's list thats the point. But ellie like abby when she has the 3 visions of the hospital has the vision of joel. Its the epiphany its the regaining of both of their humanity. Their fathers wouldn't have wanted this for them. The point was for abby the revenge never helped her, she had lost owen, like ellie had lost dina. Forgiving ellie for killing Owen and ellie forgiving abby for killing joel gave the piece humanity and heart that would have made the game miserable without.
No, you’re not. All the gamers that I watched were so closed minded and die hard for Joel. Everyone has their truth and Abby has hers. Joel was not the savior most people thought he was
People never decide to put themselves in Abby’s shoes, and only decide to see Ellie’s side. I love both Ellie and Abby, especially Ellie more. But the fact people are always blind towards Abby’s side is just so sad. Like how would u feel if u found out a loved one died and u lived in a world where murdering is legal and you were able to track down ur loved ones murderer. The fact ppl think it’s dumb Abby didn’t forget what Joel did to her dad, but don’t think it’s dumb that Ellie didn’t forget what Abby did to Joel. It’s like ppl don’t understand the similarities in both Ellie’s and Abby’s story. And the moral of part 2 is that revenge is never the answer. Abby kills Joel, it gets all her friends killed. Ellie kills Abby’s friends, it gets Jesse killed, made her lose her fingers and Dina. Same goes for Tommy, since he wanted revenge he ended up losing an eye and his wife.

@@menzzle210 why dont you put yourself in joels shoes? Remember in first game, where we, as joel, had to rush through hospital butchering bunch of people to get to the surgery room. And then there is a guy whose intent is to actually kill the person you love. You wouldnt think of not killing him, he is pointing knife at you, there is always a danger he could kill you. I think what joel did was reasonable. Even though i feel sorry for abby and he had every right to kill joel, we shouldnt be forced to play abby who is just a side characters daughter. I play this game to see ellie and joels journey. Anyway...
Abby is the most competent, professional, and stable minded compared to Joel and and Ellie. Joel was a selfish cynic who disregarded everyone's suffering, sacrifices, and personal causes including Ellie's just to get his own fatherhood back. Ellie's a person with an existential crisis and survival's guilt, with a deteriorating mind who believes she should have died a long time ago with Riley, then at the hospital, but Joel and life (behind all those decent moments) were just too cruel to her. Such a compelling game franchise. I'm down for a Part 3.
@@Magnachargefan She didn't take joy in killing Dina you guys just make that up to antagonize her some more and Ellie literally killed her pregnant friend first so ofc shes gonna retaliate

Surgeon of death To each their own, I found Abby’s journey more than just interesting, it was intense and heartbreaking. I found her story really incredible
I know I should hate Abby for everything that she did. But I don't. Because when Joel killed her dad and took everything from her, she went to a sweet little girl, to an angry, vengeful person. Such impulses can make good people make terrible decisions.😔
Dude, i like Abby about a 100 times more than Ellie to be honest. I can totally understand her motivation, she had all reasons for killing Joel. She refuses to kill Ellie and her friends two times, she refuses to kill Ellie even three times, because she did not want to kill people for no reason. Also, in her part of the story, you learn that she also has a good heart, knows gratitude, and risks her own for those who saved her life. I really (really!) can't understand how one can have such hatred for the character. If you just find her unlikable, fine by me. But she alone has reason for revenge, not Ellie.
@@marcor6284 good point I also like Abby more because she had better outfits Ellie on the other hand I absolutely hated every outfit she wore in this game the only outfit I like on Ellie is the jumpsuit from the first one but we obviously can’t wear it anymore which is stupid I mean what happened to changing outfits it made no sense but hey at least we had infinite stuff and render modes better than nothing

It's so nice to see some love for Abby in the comment section. I am tired of those stupid piece of shits that hate her just because she killed their pReCiOuS jOeL. I mean, I like all the characters actually, but they failed to understand her side... and that's funny cause Naughty Dog kinda wanted this to happen.
Gonna be honest...I think Abby killing Joel COULD have worked better...for an alternate The Last of Us Part 3, and alternate The Last of Us Part 2 is we follow Ellie and Abby on their different quests, heck maybe Ellie gets pissed off at Joel and leaves him over what happened in the first one and ends up with Abby and her crew while Joel is finding Ellie, and killing Abby's crew...or I dunno. Something better.
My little theory about Dr. Daniela Star and Savage Starlight. That's a comic book that ellie reads. Joel says " I liked the twist ending on how they both escaped. Foreshadowing for ellie & abby. Just my opinion
Joel made an exceedingly selfish decision to save Ellie over making a vaccine. However, players sympathize with him because he found a daughter with her. It's a valid showcase of how humanity operates
I just saw the video of a doctor analyzing some of the scenes. And he said something that really stuck with me,: that in their last fight, Ellie gets to pierce Abby's sterno, something which would ultimately cause damage to her heart and therefore kill her, in words of said doctor "she wouldn't last alive much longer after that". If that's true, considering the realism of the game. Ellie actually killed Abby, she just didn't get to see her die.
Now this is the way to build empathy with a character, it's not that the argument of the story was shallow, it was the order of thr events that didn't fit at all. By the way nice editing wish Druckmann made it this way.
The point of the game is not to be told to like a character, it is giving you the choice to understand a character, it is to show you how your actions effected them, both in the first game and the second, and how Abby's actions effected Ellie. This game isn't abby's story, it's Ellie's. This is the proper way to continue the first game. "I don't want the Parallelism of MY world being shattered in an instant through the sudden death of Joel, like Abby's was with the sudden killing of her father, so I have the oportunity to TRULY understand the pain and anguish and want for revenge that she sought, I want stereotypical storytelling where EVERYTHINGS in order, so I'm not challenged and things are easier to handle." I like Ellie and Abby and Joel.
Love it. Love it. Gotta say though, if she did go back to Jackson, she probably would be avoiding Dina and Tommy as much as possible

@David Mutchler Abby was punished enough. Most of her friends died. She went on an extreme journey to resolve the guilt of killing Joel by rescuing 2 children betraying her own group. People couldn't get past sentimentality, but I do agree with some comments that they could have sent the same message with a different execution.

I think I like Abby's mission better too because Ellie's mission was just all about finding Abby for revenge
How ironic most people I know hated playing every second of Abby including me, oh wait forgot I didn't buy the game.
That's how developer manipulation works tho.. let abby have all the cooler missions so that you like her better even though the story is horseshit.
The gorgeous design and brutal fun combat help it a lot too
But no excuses for her killing best daddy joel.

Looking back, Abby was more moral than Joel and Ellie. It’s surprisingly fitting that she got that happiest ending between the three of them.

@@marvelousmeh2077 so exactly what I said, then
Marvelous Meh That might work for some people but we all grew to love Joel and wanted to see him in this game so when he dies instantly most people got pissed and weren’t capable of feeling empathy for her because she ruined what they expected of the game. I ended up liking her at the end but doing the fake marketing and killing Joel was just way too risky and was obviously not going to go through to everybody. That’s why they should have done abbys story first.
Too bad it wasn’t. They wrote Abby really bad.

I absolutely agree

Also, I think Abby was actually considering for a moment to stop, but she realized that Joel would have died later due to the head trauma, so she decided to kill him so he would not have died more painfully. This would be pointed out due to her shaking her head before the final strike like an act of disgust, and when she paused for that moment she was thinking to herself.

Right? Every time i see the player reacting, showing little to no desire to stop and think about what they are doing, the trail of bodies they are leaving in their wake, and how there is no more just or wrong side, i keep thinking: "are we really that thirsty for bloodshed, or are we just so focused on our own pain that we become unable to understand the pain of other?"
Ellie is a lunatic in TLoU2. Angry on Joel, bitchy and always discontented. I hate, what they did to her character. Abby is much more reasonable and easier to like.
@@sopor11081981 I agree, but I can also see why Ellie turned out this way. She became so consumed by her lust for revenge that she completely lost herself. It's sad to see, but her complete change in character is explainable.
I cannot understand how people hate Abby, she's such a great written character. Honestly, somehow she's even a better person than Eliie. Ellie looks for revenge and kills everyone in her way. Abby killed the person who killed her father, and spared everyone else. She even spared Ellie twice.
@@ash9280 I'm sure she only regrets to ever killing Joel because his "daughter" followed them and killed her friends, nearly killed her.
@@colemarheine3503 when lev asks abby why she saved him and yara she said that she needed to “lighten the load.” this was before her friends died (that she knew of) so i think she just genuinely felt guilty and wanted to get her humanity back
@hhh not really 3 times. The third time was when Ellie almost drowned her💀
She’s already grown from that and she showed that in this game. Ellie is the one that has to prove that.
I don't know you but I love you
Thank you so much.
1) ellie and Joel museum
2) Abby waking up in camp after a flashback from finding her dad and get stuff to head out with the ones going to Jackson.
6) Abby going to look for Owen, flashback Owen. and finding the scar kids
7) ellie in Seattle up until she smacks the bejesus out of that black girl.
10) Abby finding lev and seeing his sister die, going to the aquarium, finding Owen dead and killing Jessie, "killing" Tommy and sparing Dina and ellie
11) ellie's trick happy end
12) Abby and lev finding fireflies and getting captured
13) ellie finding Abby. And the end of the game
I still like Joel way way way way more
Great storytelling. You go from hating her to cheering for her. They turned Ellie into an absolute grudge queen until the very end and I STILL found myself rooting for Abby.
I didn't
Go dilate.

The real villain is abbys shitty dad.
@@albertmaggiolo7448 I'm pretty sure they will because both of them went similar paths and they could understand each other and work together.
Five reason why empathizing with ABby is asking people to empathize with a psychopath
1) she dragged her crew 500+ miles for reckless revenge based off a tip.
She knew he was making a controversial decision on a young girl's life, and no one forced her to watch Jerry die
3) She validated her dad in thed ecision to kill Ellie without choice or even allowing closure with Ellie's loved ones prior
4) She gets dry fucked by an ambivalent close friend with a pregnant girlfriend. This actually isn't her fault. Its neil's because of obvius he wanted to let us know his fetish, Thanks neil. Didn't need this to further the plot, and it certainly doesn't make me empathize with Abby.
["It's kind of what i described: i wanted people to hate her immensely. Where they think they want to do horrible things to her" -Neil Druckmann]
Abby actually feels like the manifestation of psychopathic torture that Neil wanted to put on players. Maybe he should see a therapist.
5) Was completely ready and happy to knowingly kill a pregnant woman (until her new BFF gave her a look (?), but it doesnt take away from teh fact she wanted to],

@@psychedelicyeti6053 she will be on people's list everyone is on someone's list thats the point. But ellie like abby when she has the 3 visions of the hospital has the vision of joel. The point was for abby the revenge never helped her, she had lost owen, like ellie had lost dina.

"I don't want the Parallelism of MY world being shattered in an instant through the sudden death of Joel, like Abby's was with the sudden killing of her father, so I have the oportunity to TRULY understand the pain and anguish and want for revenge that she sought, I want stereotypical storytelling where EVERYTHINGS in order, so I'm not challenged and things are easier to handle."
