    Your video has been spot on. I do have a few comments that others have said plus one of my own.... THE POWER STEERING PUMP...Others have stated that YOU CAN get the two lower bolts from the bottom and thru the wheel well. I agree- I did it and it was fairly easy. The top one was a BEAR but I after a frustrated morning trying to get it, went my own way and got it out fairly quickly. I disconnect the high pressure line from the pump, I move the steering reservoir out of the way , and I was able to use a 12mm (short socket) -3" extension- and 6" long 3/8" ratchet with the handle pointing to the passenger side wheel well and it was easy to take out. NO universal needed. I'm 6'3" and I was all crawled up in that engine. You will need to ORDER special bolts from Mazda to pull the timing cover off--- do that early. Remember to bag/tag your components, place bolt and nuts back into the holes you took them out of as soon as possible. ORDER new pully bolts from Mazda early.... I've spent nearly $800 (2023) in parts/tools for this job. I believe this video made it worth the effort. My skill level... I was a F18 mechanic is the Marines and I mostly have done brakes, suspension lift kits, and axle swap on vehicles. This was the deepest that I have been into an engine and NO WORRIES SO FAR- Thanks for the video.

    John, I have to say this series of how to replace the water pump on this CX-9 is probably the best car series I've ever seen. Nice job! I have a 2012 CX-9 with that poorly designed ford engine/water pump and after watching your videos, I felt like I could do this. Although, my torque converter started having issues at 100k miles and I plan to just trade this POS in for a more reliable Toyota or Honda. Thanks for taking the time to create and post these videos...I'll definitely be checking out your other videos.

    Nice videos John
    well done, just to let you know i did the same thing in the balancer pully but it kept pulling it sideways. so in cleaning my tool box out i found a puller one size smaller. all 3 arms fit no grinding and it came right off. just a helpful tip. Good videos

    • @rje613
      @rje613 Год назад

      Just wanted to add that I did the same. The box of pulleys I got from Harbour Frieght came with 3 pulleys and the 73mm one was fine for the job. No grinding needed. I also found that no socket was needed on the bolt. It was easy enough to just place the pulley tool tip directly on the bolt.

    BTW. the two bottom bolts for the power steering pump can be seen and accessed from the wheel well. Jack the car up, take passenger front wheel off, and put it on jack stands and you can slide your head in by the rear end of the wheel well with a flashlight and take them both out with a 12 mm socket and a universal and two extensions and a ratchet. It took me 10 minutes to get them out. The top one? Maybe 2 hours because I am used to two angles to see something...the third angle was a pain in the butt. Even with a mirror and flashlight, I kept poking the socket through the pulley wheel hole. If you have done this job, yo know what I mean. I took the banjo bolt out before the top bolt. Just when i thought they were completely nuts when I had to find and replace a starter on one of these, I get hit with a timing chain replacement. Arghhh.

      I did the easy lowest bolt from the bottom- glad to know that I can do the other bottom bolt as well. That top one---are you kidding me. It's still there after a morning on that one bolt...it's still there. I'm on a 12oz break right now - getting ready to go at it again.

    Hello John, your video is informative. I am using a Mazda CX-9 2015 and facing the water pump leak issue. Mechanic told me to change water pump, thermostat, radiator and timing chain. I could not understand, if I change those, will it be ok to drive another 2 to 3 years.

    How much did everything cost you in total i have one cx9 2008 and the coolant is leakinf

  • @jsimmonstx
    @jsimmonstx 2 года назад

    A friend has a CX-9 and the water pump failed, dumping all the coolant into the crankcase (internal water pump is a STUPID design). Interestingly enough, this catastrophic failure was preceded by a P0016 engine code (cam/crank timing sync). Apparently, the water pump bearing was starting to fail, and finally let go. Now she needs a new engine. Mazda 3..7's are unobtanium, but can the shop use a Ford 3.7 in its place?

    For the love of all that's good... That top bolt on power steering pump is the worst on my 2012 Mazda cx9. I can't get to it. And when I do I have no leaverge to get it off. The bottom 2 were very easy... What did you use for the top one..

    • @JohnCanFixAnything
      @JohnCanFixAnything  4 года назад

      I used a mirror from the top of the engine. I laid rubber mat over the top of the engine, stuck a portable light behind where the bolt was and then used a 1/4 inch twist socket to get at the bolt. A complete pain in the rear. took me over an hour just for that darn power steering pump.

      @@JohnCanFixAnything I ended up having to unbolt the main hose to get to it. So naturally all my fluid is out. I tried to avoid that for like 2hrs.... Once I did that and used the mirror I got it out.. I am not looking forward to putting it back in that is for sure...

      @@JohnCanFixAnything first off I can't believe I have to do this at 110k . Japanese motors will run a chain for twice that. Second is why in the heck did they design it like this. I can pull a Camry motor and replace it easier than this...lol

      @@JohnCanFixAnything it's my wife's SUV. Very bad rattle under load at low rpm coming from chain area. It worse when the AC is on. And only between 1500 to 2k rpm.. once you get past that it's fine.. once I did get the cover off. There was slack in the chain. When I aligned it, And stuck my tool in cams. I do not feel any slack now. So I'm guessing during the revolution at some point it's loose. I'm in it now. So no going back. I hope this fixes my rattle problem.

      Also they made a few changes from your model to 2012. One being the motor mount is a little different. You had to take some small plates off. I don't have this plates.. but no real big difference. You video is great.

    You mentioned in your first vid that you did this twice. How many miles did you get out of it before deciding to do it again. how many mile on the second one before you sold it? Did you have any worry about using non- motorcraft water pump and chains? By chance have there been any improvements on the seals/bearings over the years? If so, any idea what I should be looking for? Thanks

    • @JohnCanFixAnything
      @JohnCanFixAnything  4 года назад +1

      If it is for the power steering pump, you don't. You cut the old one off and replace with a new one. If it is the large Serpentine belt, there is a pulley with the square notch on the front of the engine under the motor mount.
