Great video series! 5 years later and still the best video's for this project! I did the water pump and timing chain set on a 2013 CX-9, very small changes for the 2013 since your video came out, such as the timing chain is a inverted tooth chain. Very much appreciate all the tool tips, access issues, torque specs and part numbers as I followed along doing the job. Thank you!

Excellent video series John! I did the job, no hiccups. with the exception of the few access problems and a few expletives, especially when putting the power steering pump back on...I got it done. I gotta tell ya this job was a bitch! I've been working on my own cars for 40 yrs and I have a lift and lots of tools. I'm 55 yrs old and in pretty good shape for my age. This is up there with the worst of them. If somebody just has basic hand tools, this job is not reccomended. I used a battery powered ratchet on a lot of stuff which was a major time saver. and also the car lift saved a lot of crawling around, but there still was a lot of crawling around. I'd say I got about 20 hrs in it total. Now I know why the dealers take the motor and tranny out. It's gotta be easier than doing it in the car. I could have done it without these videos but it probably would have taken me twice as long and a few heartaches along the way. If nothing else, your videos lend a lot of moral support... Thanks again man.

Watched the whole series since my wife has a CX7, the CX9's little brother. I'm infinitely wowed by your wisdom, can do attitude, and endless patience. Suffice it to say, I'd never undertake this project since I'm quite challenged in the patience department but kudos to you good sir for demonstrating that it can be done :) . Great series of videos :) ! I've viewed several of your other videos and it was a complete no brainer ... I HAD to subscribe :) ! Thanks again for sharing these.

Thank you sir. I watched all 4 videos before starting to work onmy wife's CX9. You saved me a lot of time and headache, and I am not going to start the work and just going to put the ordered parts on ebay.
I've serviced my E46 M54 engine, and I thought that was difficult. Now I realize the level of difficulty was nowhere near of CX-9's. Thank you again.

I have watched all 4 videos. For, a couple of days now. Tomorrow, I will start on my son's 2012 Mazda CX 9. With the same problem. Everything looks good. I am capable of doing the job. What worries me a little is those power steering bolts. I am not going to replace the pump. But, to lose the bolts only to get that cover bolt. Also, the harmonic balancer bolt is a little worry, too. But, the job will get done. Even if it takes me a month. For, it has been sitting for 6 months. I thought that the engine was a rotary engine. Which, I know nothing about them. But, I ran into your video and it surprised me that it was a piston engine. Which, I know about them. My son is happy that I am going to fix it. Because he still paying this crappy car. Thank you, for those videos.

The crank bolt is a somewhat oddball M12x1.50. I lucked out and had an old Cologne 2.9 from a Ranger sitting around, and that crank bolt happens to be the same thread pitch but longer than the 3.5 bolt.
Using the 2.9 bolt and the thrust bearing from the inexpensive power steering pulley installer kits coupled with stacks of 7/16" Gr8 washers I was able to install the crank pulley/harmonic balancer

Your video series was amazing and got me start to finish. my timing got messed up on the right bank. Initially when I was attempting to take off the harmonic balancer bolt, my R1 camshaft rotated an unknown number of times. I tried to rest as best I could but when I got it all assembled it threw the code for that position. Also would not stay running. When I broke everything back down my main chain was still in the correct position but all 4 cams were flipped 180 with the alignment marks facing down. Like an inexperienced person I figured if the main chain was set all I had to do was to remove the cams and flip them back into position. My left side went in and set right, but both right side are not setting in. Any advice to keep me from breaking the valves?

GREAT video- I've been following along while I change the pump in my daughter's CX9 and your videos have been EXTREMELY helpful.
I am getting ready to reassemble but I do have a few of questions for you or anyone else that has done this job...
    1. While removing the right-side cam/valve chain and sprockets the cam lock tool popped out and the camshaft moved. I was able to rotate it back to TDC but am concerned that I may have caused some damage or messed up the timing. I am ok considering I was able to rotate it back to TDC? I am afraid to reattempt the procedure and am tempted to just leave the old chain and guides in place since they actually don't look too bad. Any thoughts or considerations?
    2. I may have missed it- but what gasket maker did you use for timing cover? Guy at auto parts store said Mazda recommends Permatex Ultra Gray
    3. How did you go about cleaning out the oil pan considering antifreeze is now mixed in. I was planning on dropping the pan and cleaning it out but considering its not all that straight-forward I was thinking before I install the timing cover, I might just drain the oil and using a hand pump to remove as much as oil/fluid possible and hand clean as best I can without removal and reinstalling.
    Thanks...

I saw that these pumps have two layers of gaskets, when the first one fails coolant starts squirting onto the backside of the alternator when engine is running. That's one of the ways you can tell it is time to replace the pump.

    • @JohnCanFixAnything

I bought the little slide on tool at Autozone but it did not work. I ended up taking two zip ties and tying it onto the pulley. I then turned the engine over with a breaker bar until it slipped on. Then I cut the zip ties off.

Did this work I’m having the same problem my mechanic said that it may not be worth it. Due to antifreeze in the engine. The bearings in the engine will fail is this true

    • @JohnCanFixAnything
      @JohnCanFixAnything  3 года назад

It works just fine but if you are paying a mechanic then I would think twice. How many miles are on the vehicle. What is it worth right now. etc. If you have antifreeze in the oil then your engine's days are numbered. Antifreeze will quickly breakdown the oil's ability to protect the internal engine parts.

I bought the Melling kit from RA. The chain guide which just slips on was identical to the OEM Motorcraft, to the point where the Motorcraft emblem and Ford part # had been ground off by hand (Dorman does this, too, with upper intakes/plenums). So, either Melling was purchasing Ford overstock or they OEM for Ford. FWIW
