The pink followed by yellow ink is my favourite way to paint yellow - I love the browny-orange it makes in all the recesses, and it's dead easy to boot.
If you were to undercoat purple, then apply a pink zenithal, followed by a white zenithal; the yellow contrast layer would make the transition from yellow > deep yellow > orange > brown. Alternatively, you could undercoat pink, then apply a white zenithal and a purple 'anti-zenithal.' I haven't tried it yet - but the colour theory checks out - and it just makes sense intuitively too.
It’s great, but People should know that if you do zenithals, putting this paint over it will give that green tinge. What you do instead of white over black, is do white over pink, brown or tan. That way the one coat contrast yellows will look much nicer and more contrasted, without relying on slopping it on.
@@Smilomaniac Yes, zenithals and pre shading with colors is a great tool combined with contrast in general. But I was manly talking about coverege, sorry for not being clear. That thing is amazing for achieving a smooth yellow surface, besides using an airbrush, of course
...and yet, shouldn't paints just work? Really? Why are so many shades known for their poor coverage, or streakiness, or whatever, when per volume they cost as much as a 200 year old scotch malt! I think it'd be better to produce a score or so colours that work, rather than several hundred that don't. IMO.
I really like this format the "Hey here are some techniques you don't have to do it but they could be for you give em a go - but this one is naff don't do this one" great vid
Pink undercoat / primer is the way forward. Love the effect and a great way to get that browny orange shading in with little to no extra effort. Its the only reason I even entertained going for Imperial Fists as my Heresy army! Great video as always, and love that ranking system.
Imperial Fist Yellow is my go to these days. I've painted up a fairly large heresy force with it and it's just so easy plus I think it looks good. Definitely interested in trying the white over pink method. Looks great. I'll also use daemonic Yellow by AP for some stuff since it's quick. Wish I could find the colour forge stuff in the US. I'd like to try it.
It's Stippling, no dry brushing in there. If you watch his video he specifically says not to use motion in the brushing as you want the effect to appear random and build up a realistic texture
Imperial Fist contrast over white is amazing. For my HH Fists, I did that, then the new formula Cassandora Yellow all over shade, with a layer of Phalanx Yellow, and Dorn Yellow for edge highlights (keeping it on theme). The new MkVI marines have a lot less detail than the models in the video, so the layering/cleanup stage after the all over shade is a lot faster, and honestly pretty fun! Great video guys.
Vince Ventruella used flesh colours as an under shade in his video. When I did some skaven recently I started with a recess shade of guilliman flesh followed by imperial fist over the top. Was happy with the result
This video is coincidentally came out at the same time i was looking for a new yellow for my space marine army as soon as i watched this i headed to the store and came home with some imperial fist thank you
How I painted up my fists was the super simple method of: spray averland sunset, drybrush hexos palesun, all over shade casendora yellow. Can't believe you missed that one lol
Up until recently I have used a recipe for yellow which I found from Pete the wargamer. Undercoat the mini with bone color like Skeleton bone or Wraithbone and then apply Cassandora yellow all over the mini. Recess shade with Seraphim sepia and if you want apply highlights. Really simple and effective but I’m unsure how it works with the new recipe for Cassandora yellow
Great video. If using a rattlecan, Molotow and Montana both make excellent paint for the street art (graphiti) market. It's very durable and much cheaper than anything from citadel or army painter. Montana makes both high and low pressure and the spray can be adjusted with different caps, which are less than a dollar.
Well tickle me pink and spray me with Averland Sunset, another great video 👍🏻 I rate this video as highly as a copy of fly fishing by J R Hartley found because of the yellow pages 😊
I stick Imperial Fist through my airbrush on anything that needs to be yellow, massive time saver and my Sunblitz Brotherhood look pretty good if I do say so myself. I do the zenithal undercoat with the pink, and it's way to good for a method that easy.
Awesome Video Boyz! You should do a similar video gor all primary colours I think it would be great for beginners but also just a great playlist and add to the Painting Phase catalogue! Very Fun!
Wish i'd seen this before committing to a Bad Moon scheme for my Macfarlane Ork! I certainly ran into the issue where a drybrush looked great and highlighting looked plain wrong. Great vid, i'll give it 12 Dorns out of 10.
I always liked to prime my models (those I wanted to paint yellow that is) with Zandri Dust. It's absolutely perfect base for any yellow paint to go on (regardless if you airbrush, dry brush or just paint layers). Hint for anyone dry-brushing: instead of wiping your brush into a paper towel, instead wipe it on a wooden pallet. This way you avoid the moisture being sucked out of the brush, and prevent the end result from being chalky :)
For spray yellow montana has some ridiculous good yellows, they go on much smoother, and you can put like 100 different attachments to make the spray more concentrated of diffuse or in lines its awesome
I always used the Vallejo heavy skin tone under the yellow. It's not great to be honest. but when doing hazards, I've found it easier to put yellow on black than the reverse.
Interesting to see how the Contrast paint differs between brush and airbrush. And now I'm off to find out more about this Richard Gray gentleman, I've not heard of him/the approach before and it looks rather good!
@@thepaintingphase I'm a couple of videos in, he's on of those frustratingly talented buggers who can turn out a complete, high quality model in the time it takes me to base coat an arm 🤣
Something I have been thinking of doing is priming black., then painting the bright colour areas with Grey Seer., and then using a bright contrast paint on those areas 🤔
Great analysis. Very different results depedning on the technique. I'll add, if you start with a more ocher colour like Averland Sunset, you can shift it to a more vibrant yellow very easily by washing it with a yellow ink. Also, for recess shading I really like sepia washes/inks as they enhance the mid-tones of the yellow. Lastly, bright colours really react well to oil washes.
You should try a white (or off white) base with either black or brown lining (recess shading as you say) then either dry brush yellow (or use contrast yellow) over the whole thing. The big thing here is to get the recessed areas dark with a light base then apply the yellow over the whole thing. You can do highlights after that too.
I did a similar thing to the pink trick when doing Ultramarines recently, but I used a red primer from Halfords and Corax White spray zenithal. I don't think it made much difference, given that I could only brush on Macragge Blue after. This is very helpful, thank you. I think might stick to light undercoat and Contrast, though I suspect zenithal or preshading would both enhance that further.
I'm in the middle of an Imperial Fists army and I've been hesitant to use the Imperial Fists Contrast paint due to the vibrant color. My previous application was Iyaden Yellow Contrast with a dry brush of Scale 75 Sol Yellow, as I greatly desired a matte finish that Scale 75 provides. However, seeing the pink/white spray option with Imperial Fists Contrast over it, that is definitely an interesting combination that I wish I could have used from the start. Certainly something to think about, and probably a good motivation to finish this army ASAP!
This is a great video! Very informative and thorough, which I appreciate. However, I want to ask, which of these techniques would you recommend when painting accessories or other details yellow? Like, say the face of a shield or the charm on a necklace/bracelet, for example. Or would that require different prep compared to the techniques outlined? Sine there is a big difference between painting an accessory yellow and using it as your primary color on most of the model.
Glad you liked the video! Lots of them are transferable to details, probably not so much spray cans, airbrushes, or dry brushing as that could cause lots of mess/clean up. Just paint it yellow, or you could paint it white and then contrast it. Completely upto you and what kind of yellow you want to go for.

i was impressed by the white with contrast paint, not a big fan of the black primer for the yellow. The yellow primer kinda looks like the darker areas of the yellow contrast paint, so i'm curious trying it out as a base, and then dry brush to lighter colors. The ones with pink primer looks a bit orange, but it does make them alot warmer in tone, will definitely try it out as well. Honestly, I find yellow easy to paint. Thanks for this video! Gave me confidence to paint Imperial Fists. My only question is, how do you repaint areas using contrast paints, If I did the trims black or red and accidentally hit the yellow parts?
unfortunately i have to piant nameplates atm - for example Batman ;) and thats where i can only go with a full black spray and paint on the yellows as i really dont feel like masking for 2 hours. i usually always start my yellows with a pinkish/red tone which adds so much to the yellow afterwards.
I thought Thunderbird 4 was the yellow one? :D Great vid as always - very informative. I've been committed to Averland + layering up old school but may have to try these contrast + airbrush methods...
Well, airbrushing yellow (zenithal) works great if you use a reddish brown for priming. You wouldn’t use Nuln Oil for washing yellow either, so why would you use black primer?
