    Looking back at my childhood, my parents were highly irresponsible. Living in Australia I was at the beach all the time, yes with swim shirts and hats, but with barely any sunscreen let alone reapplication. I recall having quite severe sunburn every summer, with peeling, pain, dizziness. As a child I thought this was my fault, but looking back my parents and teachers were just uninformed about the dangers of sun exposure. And now I have two 'precancerous' moles behind my ears. I am now the sunscreen queen thanks to your videos.

      I relate a lot. As a pale blue eyed child in a Mediterranean country I got sunburns every single summer. My parents didn't do it necessarily on purpose, they weren't informed, but I am dealing and will be dealing with the consequences of that for the rest om my life. It sucks. Now that we know better we can do better. 🙌

    Thank you for another wonderful and informative video, Dr. Dray.
    How disappointing to learn about the EWG funding conflict of interest. I'm not 100% surprised. It's along the lines of the meat industry donating funds to breast cancer research and cosmetic companies running their own "clinical tests."

      @DrDrayzday  7 лет назад +68

      Don't be scared Ms Cara. We learn new things all the time. Not a realistic expectation given the knowledge we had at the time. Plus alot of the older sunscreens were not great, and maybe protected people from burns ok...but not necessarilyl all sun damage. Best we can do moving forward is teach young children to form the habits early. Hope you are having a great friday!

    Wow, just discovered you from someone talking about your channel in another comment section. I have been on a quest for great everyday sunscreens so this video was wonderful to watch. Currently I really love Japanese sunscreens because I was using mineral sunscreens but still freckling quite a bit (I am a redhead with super pale skin) and couldn't figure out why. So I started reading a lot about it and realized that the sunscreens I was using weren't actively blocking UVA possibly. So I switched to a Japanese sunscreen and bam, no more freckling! Happiness!

  • @denisiel1

    Thank you Dr. Dray for your in depth explanations. Would you please address two issues: (1) Japanese sunscreens are broken down into categories of incidental and outdoor sun exposure so that even a 10 minute walk to the train would require use of a outdoor sunscreen. Besides harsh sunscreens labelled for sports usage in the US, what make a sunscreen better for outdoor use? I found that when I switched to Japanese outdoor sunscreens, my melasma significantly improved even though it always seemed my makeup was intact (not sweated off) with indoor use sunscreens; and (2) Is the high alcohol content in Japanese sunscreens degrading for the skin if it is applied on top of serums and a moisturizer? Alcohol is found in a lot of Japanese skin care products and older women's skin are often in very good condition even after decades of daily use of alcohol containing products so is it certain that alcohol breaks down the skin in the long term as some American "experts" allege?

    • @DrDrayzday
      @DrDrayzday  7 лет назад +6

      Thanks! 1.) "outdoor" use is largely marketing....these sunscreens also are not harsh. sunscreens with iron oxide, as well as zinc and titanium dioxide, have been shown to improve melasma 2.) no alcohol in the sunscreen is not problematic, and in fact is likely there for stability of the uv filters...it is not a dangerous/harsh ingredient, unless too high..as in alot of toners

    • @denisiel1
      @denisiel1 7 лет назад

      Thanks for your reply! I think the Japanese outdoor sunscreen that are sweat and sebum resistant stay on better and that is why they provide better protection. Compared to EltaMD Clear 46 and MDSolarSciences SPF50, Biore Perfect Milk or Anessa Aqua Booster (these have ZO) seem to stay on. But I can't figure out the equivalent in US sunscreens, which I would prefer as US sunscreens are less expensive.

  • @hillareads
    @hillareads 7 лет назад +11

    Yeah, I bought into some of the EWG hype a few years ago, but none of their recommendations ever seemed to work any better than the supposedly unsafe products. Have you discussed spray sunscreens on your channel? I've always preferred the way they feel, but I never considered if they would actually be as effective as their lotion counterparts.

    • @DrDrayzday
      @DrDrayzday  7 лет назад +6

      Yeah I find that media frenzies and false scares against ingredients (which are often necessary for safety and efficacy of well established skin care products as well as prescription medications applied to the skin) wind up doing alot of harm. As far as spray sunscreens, i have addressed them before, and I believe i mention them again in this friday's q&a. They have a major short coming in that they do not reliably distribute the sunscreen ingredients on the skin so as to give an even distribution of spf. If you like them, they are okay as a "top coat" in my opinion....but not enough on their own.

    Hi Dr. Dray! I know you mention here that retinyl palmitate isn't carcinogenic in sunscreens, but does this form of vitamin a make you more sensitive to the sun? I'm always confused about retinyl palmitate in sunscreens since you're supposed to use sunscreen to protect your skin when using retinol/retinoids!

    • @DrDrayzday
      @DrDrayzday  5 лет назад +2

      it is an antioxidant that stabliizes the ingredients...it does not act as a retinoid/retinol and therefore is not probematic in the sun

    For those that prefer a more cosmetically elegant sunscreen for underneath make up, I just want to mention that I just recently tried and love the MD Solar Sciences physical sunscreen line for that purpose. There are tinted and a non-tinted versions and they feel so barely there that it makes me feel vulnerable since my cognitive association with sunscreen efficacy is paired with a thick layer of goop.
    Other tinted sunscreens I like are the tinted Suntegrity with 20% Zinc Oxide but it has more of a thicker consistency than the MD Solar Sciences. For those that prefer a chemical, tinted sunscreen the Zo Oclipse Daily Sheer is another “barely there” type.
    When I cycle, I add an iron oxide (in the form of a mineral, liquid foundation) to the Neutrogena SheerZinc so I at least have some semblance of a flesh-colored mime. I read some empirical research that iron oxides provide some protection against the UV’s, infrareds, or visible light (can’t remember which).
    At the onset, I did not intend to write all of that but if it helps someone it was worth the time it took.
    Thank you for your wonderfully informative videos Dr, Dray!

      I have a heard a few people mention this actually. One of my coworkers tried it and said she experienced an acne flare and thought it might be related. I couldn't tolerate it myself after a few days, because it was too irritating and drying. I think that plum extract may be a problem? Not sure. Sorry to hear this happened Ms Michelle. HOpe your skin gets better. You can try and return the unopened tubes and get refund, hopefully?

      It caused the same reaction with me. I hardly ever get pimples but after 1 week of using this I started getting them. Once I stopped using it, my skin cleared in about 2 weeks. I tried again, and the pimples came back. I stopped using it completely, went back to using Elta MD, my skin is back to being clear. I was trying to save money as AG is much less expensive than Elta.

    Hi Dr Dray! I was looking for a day moisturizer and know you love Neutrogena oil-free moisturizer. Right now I am using Vanicream. I do have adult acne and with it being summer thought a lighter moisturizer would be better. But I noticed that the Neutrogena oil-free has Dimethicone and Petrolatum as the 4th and 5th ingredients. Didn't you say those could be pore clogging or acne causing? I can't remember!

    • @DrDrayzday
      @DrDrayzday  7 лет назад +5

      these are great ingredients in a moisturizer and do not clog pores, depending on the vehicle in which they are in...lotions designed for the face are fine..ointments (like vaseline) where these ingredients are high...are too occlusive and clog pores ( i discussed this in other videos and q&as, so check the q&a playlist if you are interested in more)

    Hi Dr. Dray,
    Please help!!! The search for sunscreen continues. I have tried several (chemical) sunscreen products specifically for running outside. My recent failures include Aveeno protect and hydrate, alba Hawaiian, Traders Joe’s spray, and Walmart brand Equate sport. They all burn when applied and eventually sting my eyes. This weekend, after binge watching some of your vlogs on sunscreens, I tried Neutrogena Sheer Zinc face dry-touch and Aveerno baby zinc oxide. In both cases, even after waiting 15 minuets, it looked like I painted my face white. I covered the Neutrogena with lots of makeup. The Aveeno baby was very white too. But, most days I wear very little makeup so, that won’t do for running or work. I need an affordable daily sunscreen that doesn’t burn my skin or eyes for exercising or just out in sun; I also want to avoid the mime look. Any other suggestions?

    Aah you have put my mind at ease r.e sunscreen ingredients- thank you! Quick question on reapplication: is it every 2 hours of sun exposure that sunscreen needs to be reapplied or every two hours regardless of sun exposure? I.e if, say, I were indoors out of the sun, blinds drawn (but still during daytime), would I still need to reapply every 2 hours? Surely if UV filters are broken down by sunlight then if you're not in sunlight then there could in theory be longer between reapplication times? Thanks :)

    • @DrDrayzday
      @DrDrayzday  7 лет назад +2

      Glad to hear! If you are indoors you don't necessarily need to keep reapplying. I try and reapply about 20minutes before heading out to my car...regardless of if it is physical or chemical

My kids are in preschool. I send sunscreen in their backpack. But I don’t think the teachers put it on before recess, every time. Why do some dermatologists recommend light treatments for acne (mine wanted me to go in twice a week for full body treatments)? I understand they emit UVB rays. Doesn't this damage skin? Is it safe?

    • @DrDrayzday
      @DrDrayzday  7 лет назад +3

      Different types of light, first of all. Usually for acne it is blue or red light, not uv. Phototherapy with UVB is a treatment for many inflammatory skin disease, but with a targeted wavelength and in a very controlled manner. Ultraviolet light is immunosuppressive, so certain disease, that have too much of the immune system coming into the skin can causing disease (liek psoriasis for example) this type of targeted and controlled therapy is needed.

    I've been marathon watching your videos to take my mind off my community that is currently mostly ash (Sonoma county, CA). I'm blonde hair blue eye fair skinned. I spent a good portion of my younger years traveling to so many beautiful places near the equator. A few years ago I discovered basil cell on my forehead. Nothing else since. Since then, I wear sunscreen every day and try not to be outside too long during peak hours. I have been told more times than I can count that sunscreen is bad for me and I need to be in the sun more so I can get my vitamin D. I don't listen to this nonsense but am surprised how prevalent this belief is. I do take a vitamin D supplement but suppose I didn't. I have this theory that as someone with fair skin, I probably get enough vitamin D walking to and from my car. Plus I must admit I don't cover my body in sunscreen just face and neck. My point is, my skin gets at least a few minutes of sun every day. Can you talk about the sun and vitamin D more or if you already have, direct me to that video. What is a good source and amount of vitamin D?
