I just felt compelled to share how much I appreciate your videos!! It has been a belief of mine that you protect your skin from the sun during the day and hydrate the crap out of it at night. I love seeing a professional backing up my understanding, I am also learning SO MUCH from your channel. Thank you Andrea!

4:45 physical (aka mineral sunscreen) ; zinc and/or titanium dioxide ; can have white cast
6:16 chemical sunscreen : avobenzone, etc ; need to wait 20 mins before heading out ; tend to not leave white cast ; but many people find more irritating
    8:12 combination sunscreen

The mineral kinds are so good on my face! I recently started caring about sun protection. Found that there’s no stinging for me with this type, and I use mineral & chemical type for my body.

I'm so glad I discovered you! Sometime at the end of college (when I'd be out in the sun a lot walking around campus), I started getting rashes on my arms, hands, and chest from sun exposure, so I've been wearing sunscreen daily ever since which significantly helps prevent that. But I had no idea there were different kinds of sunscreens based on their ingredients and the essential need for reapplying, waiting 20 minutes after application, and replacing them after a couple of years. I thought the Lubriderm Daily Moisture Lotion w/Sunscreen I use daily was good enough. But I see from the ingredients that it's a chemical sunscreen, so I'm going to look into other options. I've learned quite a bit from your videos, especially this one that puts all the info together, and I thank you!
Also, I try to stay out of the sun as much as possible, but I've been criticized for it, especially recently when a blood test showed I'm vitamin D deficient. I was prescribed a weekly vitamin D2 50,000 pill and have been told by others I need to sit outside for 20 minutes a day, which I don't want to do. I'm glad to learn from you that there is no evidence sun exposure is an efficient way of getting enough vitamin D. So again, thank you for such useful information!
Finally, I really appreciate you reinforcing the idea that even sunscreen isn't enough and covering up should be an added method of protection. I had no idea there was clothing specifically for sun protection. The items you linked are a bit above my budget, but I may have to make an exception since they're an investment in my health.
Oh! And the recipes you share! I'm definitely trying some of those. I've gone back to start watching your videos from the beginning, and you've inspired me! Thank you again, Dr. Dray!

I'm LOVING the EltaMD UV Shield! It definitely has a bit of a white cast, but it's manageable and I highly recommend it to any darker girls here in the comments section! Another sunscreen I absolutely love for an active day is the Jack Black Sun Guard SPF 45! It's marketed as a men's brand, but the sunscreen is amazing, and the whitecast is minimal! It is loaded with silicones though, and with daily use it ended up breaking me out, but it's great to wear during my weekend hikes!

I wear the Banana Boat mineral-based kids sunscreen and I actually use it as my foundation. I'm kind of pale so I can get away with the white coating. Some might say it's "greasy" but I personally love the way it feels on my face. It gives my skin a super dewy look.

I’ve tried the Cerave “invisible” physical sunscreen products (SPF30 and 50) and wasn’t too happy with them. Although I didn’t feel they irritated my skin and didn’t caused rosacea flare ups.... I found them too be too moisturizing. They made my normal to oily skin rather greasy, as the day progressed and I had to do a lot of blotting, which made my tinted sunscreen and light coating of powder foundation on top, look “not so cute.” And the “invisible “ claim is a joke. Those definitely left a slight white cast, which my makeup only slightly toned down. It’s a shame, because i love a lot of Cerave products!

How do you clean 2 or 3 layers of zinc based sunscreen off your body, mainly face, without Brillo? Dr Dray or anybody, PLEASE! I have had to use oil, to break it up, but too much oil is probably bad for my skin. I wear sunscreen everyday and the zinc is STUBBORN and it won't rinse or bathe off with my reg facial cleanser.

Do you personally feel that EltaMD UV Clear and some of their other combination sunscreens match up to LRP Anthelios XL (the european stuff, not USA)?
I did an experiment with UV detection beads. I used EltaMD UV Clear, LRP Anthelios XL Ultra Light Fluid, and Blue Lizard Face. I used 1/8 teaspoon of sunscreen applied over a ziplock bag for all three sunscreens. Inside, I put the same number of beads for each individual bag. Then, I put it out in the sun for 10 minutes right next to each other. I also had a control to compare the colors to one with NO sunscreen at all. All but the Anthelios the beads turned color when exposed to UV light. The Anthelios remained white! That proves to me that the Anthelios is far superior.
But the problem is that the LRP doesn't suit my skin as well as the EltaMD products. I guess I want the best of both worlds, nice texture, non-irritating, AND superior sun protection. Any advice?
    Thanks!

Hi Dr Dray, I really love the way you explain things!
I got irritated by mineral sunscreen... Every time I used mineral sunscreen, afrer a few hours, my skin started to feel tight and weird, especially the areas around my mouth... Then, those tight spots started to peel the next day and became red... I don't think it is normal... Anyone faced the same? How can I still use mineral sunscreen without this irritation issues... Thank you!

Hello Dr. Dray! Happy Friday. I would love to see a video re: your favorite (and not-so-favorite) sunscreens.
My personal favorite is the Josie Maran SPF, followed by Mychelle and Andalou Naturals. DeVita also makes a nice face sunscreen. My husband enjoys the Badger sunscreens, although I find them to be a bit too thick for the face, and some of them are essential oil heavy.
    Have a great weekend.

I have acneic, sensitive skin which doesn't like creamy moisturisers and I stuggle to find the balance between cleansing with the right product to take my sunscreen off and not over-cleansing.. Happy Weekend 🦋. I just purchase the Australian Gold tinted face sunscreen. SPF broad spectrum 50. The size is a 3 oz. I found it at CVS on the bottom shelf with the other sunscreens in that brand. Price was $12.99. Constantly sold out at Ulta. I haven't tried it yet. Just picked it up. Will let you know how I like it. Nice to have another choice that's available now in the drugstore. Run out of the EltaMD. Give this a try. This might be another review for you . 👍🏻👩🏼‍⚕️👍🏻 Sorry a Physical sunscreen👍🏻

Dr. Dray I need some advice on when to use sunscreen. I work overnight from 9pm to 5am I wash my face before I go to sleep at 6:30am, I wake up around 2pm then go about my day and then I wash my face again at 7pm. My question is when should I put on sunscreen? After I wake up? Also, when should I put on facial medication (such as benzoyl peroxide) in the morning before I go to sleep or at night before I go to work?

Hi Dr. Dray, I was reading that zinc, titanium dioxide, and octinixate cause avobenzone to degrade faster. I prefer chemical sunscreens because I have a lot of issues with pores and texture and chemical sunscreens spread more smoothly for me. However, a lot of makeup has mineral filters and/or octinoxate in it. Would applying my foundation on top of my sunscreen likely cause it to degrade faster?

Badger zinc stick all over face ears neck chest when working in the garden, smells like cocoa butter! My family asks why I have clown makeup on when I work in the garden! I don't care, it works! It can be worked into the skin a bit for more acceptable public appearance but I like just swiping it on full strength and leaving it for working in the garden.

I started wearing spf 50 everyday for 3 years and after the first year my doctor tested me for vitamin d deficiency 🤷🏻‍♀️ oh well I’d rather take a pill every once and awhile. I got a bbl facial and the nurse was struggling to pull up my hyperpigmentation. She goes wow you actually do take care of your skin. 🙌🏻 sunscreen is the best thing for your skin!
But I just learned I haven’t been using the best sunscreen 😭 atleast I reapply throughout the day. Side note I was a welder for a couple years and was the palest welder in the shop 😂

I grew up in the 60's when the only sunscreen that was available was spf 4 or 6. My mom, who was very pale (as am I) used diaper rash ointment (the water based formula 40%) to add to makeup, sunscreen etc. From the era when we all had white noses from the zinc oxide, is this viable? I still add a little zinc oxide into my moisturizer (even though it may have spf in it) everyday.
    Crazy?
    Thanks

I have been a bit on the desperate side having not liked all the garbage in the sc & dimethicone that 40% diaper rash zinc ox cream seems like not a bad idea mixed with some carrier such as squalane. I've literally read dozens of ingredients & none of them would be my perfect mix. Some even have alot of oil & could lead to break outs. I've not used SC daily for a real long time. I am very fair but seems to reflect the sun myself so I rarely burn & my legs are still lily white despite being out & about. At 60 I know I should try a bit harder but to me I'd rather just use zinc oxide on a natural safe base than mixing it w all the chemicals. Came here to Dr Dray as she takes the time & cares about our skin!

The dreaded question: what are recommended treatments in the unfortunate event of a sunburn? From a "mild" pink to full on blisters there have been times when this body has experienced the pain.
Yes, I forgot sunscreen on the tops of my feet. My daughter was severely burned while visiting the Galapagos (she rolled up her jeans during a "wet landing" ). I missed a small section of my back when applying sunscreen. The curse of red hair/pink-blue skin means one burns very, very fast.

I know no one will probably respond .. but something that confuses me is, so I apply sunscreen over my serums and moisturizer. then I'm supposed to slather more on in 2 hours. but when I do that I break out, because I have dirt accumulation on my face and I'm just pushing that into the pores. so do people wash their face again before re-applying, therefore washing off the serums we spend our money on? I'm so confused on this. I want to be careful about the sun, but I spend so much money on my serums and whatnot, so washing them off 2 hours later sucks, and re-applying my serums multiple times a day is not cost effective and takes way too much time anyway. can someone please enlighten me on what people do about this stuff??
