Help! I just applied 1 teaspoon of my Cerave AM, I've been using about 1/2 teaspoon, and I can hardly tolerate it. It's so much that I feel almost suffocating with that much. What do I do? Apply it in two steps? It's hot here and I'm sweating buckets!!! :(

I was wondering if you answer a question? I found a foundation with SPF 23 (titanium dioxide) and I was curious if this is a high enough SPF or if I should layer it with another SPF? Right now I am using the DRMTGLY tinted SPF 45. My instinct tells me that SPF 23 is too low, but I want sure. Thanks for any help!

Happy Friday, Dr. Dray! I've really appreciated this series, and (thanks to your recommendations!) have finally found a couple of sunscreens that I can comfortably wear with or without makeup. Love the Cerave one, as well as the Neutrogena clear skin. I'm getting ready to try the Australian Gold 50 Tinted one that many others have praised. BTW, for others like me who have not been able to find the AG 50 tinted anywhere, I found it at CVS yesterday quite by accident, I was looking for something else, and spotted it on the bottom shelf with face moisturizers (not with sunscreens). Have a great weekend!

Well, sun (!) of a gun. I wear SPF 50 every day, but I rarely reapply and thought the lack of redness meant my sunscreen had protected me from skin damage. You very clearly explained how wrong I was. I've been enjoying your videos for a couple of months and thought "reapply-30" was a little overboard, but this video finally made me understand why I need to be reapplying sunscreen. I have to watch this vid again today to make sure of what I have learned about sunscreen from you so far. The reason is I came across this vid of 2 beauty bloggers (my favorite ones) who still claim SPF indicates the time our skin is protected from UVB using sunscreen. All the things they say are reasonable enough (types, ingredients and reviews) except the one thing above. I was a bit disappointed cause they know all that but then give the wrong info of a basic term. Information sources are important and I trust you Dr Dray.

Thank you for your commitment to educating so many of us on skin care routines and products. Watching your videos the last several months, I've learned so much and my focus on sunscreen has improved significantly as a result. In rewatching the sunscreen videos, I have a question about layering. You mentioned avebenzone is degraded with titanium dioxide. I often vary applications between chemical and physical sunscreens during the day. If I use chemical in the morning and reapply with physical, wouldn't the physical sunscreen application still protect me against UVA regardless of how the titanium dioxide affects the avebenzone filter applied earlier in the day?? I'm sorry for being obtuse, but I didn't understand your point here. Thanks in advance for providing additional clarification when layering sunscreens throughout the day. (And...congrats on fast approaching the 100k subscriber mark!! Well Done!)

    • @DrDrayzday
      @DrDrayzday  6 лет назад +1

ti can, in theory, degrade the avobenzone faster...but in reality, it doesn't seem to make a difference as studies do show that the combination of mineral and chemical filters still lower amount of skin cancers and sun damage

SO GLAD I FOUND YOU :) You're amazing! Hope you see this. QUESTION1: Can you do a video on melanin? Reason why I've always been a sunscreen advocate myself is cuz I felt I've always "sunburned" and got dark easily. (Ironic, given my name, Melanie.) I'd love to hear your breakdown of different skin types and their solutions. Leading to my next question. QUESTION2: How do I reapply sunscreen on a daily basis if I am wearing a full face of make up?? (Yes, I am trying to wear less make up but I'm stuck between a rock and a hard place with wanting max SPF coverage and makeup to cover acne scars and active acne.. ) Regardless, I want to be protected EVERY DAY, but you mentioned powder sunscreen isn't really effective. :( For a second, I thought that was my solution. PLS HELP!

Would love it if you addressed the issue of dentured alcohol in face sunscreen in a Q and A. All my favourites contain it high on the ingredients list, and everything I read says its the worst thing to put on my face in terms of aging.
While I have no issue with getting older, I don't want to use products that are actively aging my skin and would love your balanced advice.
I love your sense of humour and look forward to your posts every day.

Hello Dr Dray. This is the most in-depth series a medical person has ever done on RUclips for sunscreens! You got me converted to physical sunscreens. However there was an article that I came across that when you nanosize zinc oxide it loses its potential to protect against UVA while retaining its UVB protection while micro sizing does not do that. Is there any truth in that. And would also like your thoughts on layering chemical sunscreens on physical ones and vice versa. Regards from India.

Question, after I apply my sunscreen and then make-up, how often do I have to reapply during the day, if I am a teacher? I am mostly indoors with about 30 for recess and then 15-20 minutes at the end of the day at dismissal. Then there the 1 hour drive to school in the morning and afternoon. TIA

Hi dr Dray. Thanks for the video, helpful as always. A note about Heliocare supplements. On the instructions in fact they explicitly say that this is not a substitute for the sunscreen but is to be used in addition to it (so people don't think it is a sunscreen in a pill). They also claim to reduce the possibility to get an irritation from heat (like little blemishes on skin). I really like their Tolerance Mineral fluid sunscreen and have used supplements together with it while on holidays. Whether supplements did something difficult to say as I am already diligent about sun protection but my dermatologist said I could try.

Oh how I wish I would have stumbled upon these videos sooner. Everyone always preaches "even one bad sunburn increases your risk of skin cancer", so I just tried to avoid bad, blistering, peeling burns and only get mild sunburns and tan. It wasn't until I started watching your videos that I learned that sunburn isn't necessary for damage to occur, UVA rays penetrate windows, and all the years I spent getting a "healthy" tan were really just years of killing my skin. Now I have dark, ugly sunspots on my lip and wrinkles on my face...and probably some cancer waiting to make it's grand appearance down the road.
I'm just praying that my skin will try to repair itself. Thanks for the sunscreen lessons! I now have 7 bottles of sunscreen scattered about my home, work places, and purse so I'm never without it :)

It is a combination sunscreen with iron oxide...so some protection into visible light...but not really offering much other than what is in other tinted sunscreens. It does have niacinamide which can help with redness and impart a skin brightening effect...but as far as sun/uv/ir protection...not anything other than the usual tinted sunscreen

Good Morning Dr. Dray. Thank you for sharing all this information. I have never really worried about protecting my skin but a skin cancer diagnoses in my immediate family has made me take notice. I have learned so much from your vidoes on sunscreen but I do still have a couple of questions. I use the Cerave line of products for cleansing, moisturizing and sun proctection. I find my skin tolerates them well so I am not going to mess with a good thing, I was wondering how close I should get the moisturizer and SP to my eyes. I know my under eye area needs to be protected but getting to close produces watery eyes for hours. Every product I've used seems to produce the same results. My other question is about dark spots and a Dr's appointment. I want to treat my dark spots for future cancer prevention and am not sure what to ask about. I will have to pay out of pocket for what use so I don't want to waste my money trying to find the right treatment. I am not sure I will actually go to a dermatologist (depends on my family practice recommendation at a military facility with limited resources so it may not happen) I want to go armed with good info so I can have a intelligent conversation about my needs. Thanks so much for all you put out there and have a wonderful day!!!

Thanks for sharing!! If the dark spots under the eyes are cosmetic, then the provider can reassure you that they are not of concern. However, cosmetic skin concerns are not covered by insurance. I tolerate both cerave sunscreens (combination one as well as zinc only one) on my eyes.

What do u recommend for people who wear makeup all day and who work in an office most of the day and are only outside when driving/ walking into buildings or to the car ? What do you think about using spray on sunscreens for reapplying over makeup? Because you can't put a lotion sunscreen over foundation. How often do you need to reapply if you are not outside ??

Wonderful and educational video! I currently use the La Roche Posay fluide XL 50+ chemical sunscreen which I get in Europe when I'm there for work. It has Avonenzone, Mexoryl, Tinosorb S, and other chemical filters. I find it to be very effective. Still, I sometimes apply mineral sunscreen on top to "bounce off" the rays before they even hit my skin. I'm really curious if the studies regarding Avobenzone and Titanium Dioxide took into account when Avobenzone is stabilized by other sunscreen ingredients in a high quality formulation, and when the Titanium Dioxide is silicone coated (which apparently makes it less reactive and produces less ROS). Hmmmm...

Because of my crazy schedule in the morning, I am not always able to wait 20 minutes before leaving the house after applying the sunscreen. Does the zinc oxide in the formulation offer me some protection immediately? Thanks so much Doctor.

This series has been immensely helpful! Thank you! I am now however slightly freaking out that my perfect SPF routine that I has taken me a long time to find and finally become compliant with every single day is not as good as I thought.... I layer a tinted physical BB cream (zinc and titanium) over my cetaphil oil control spf 30 (chemical including avobenzone) my super oily acne prone skin prefers chemical spf but I know it’s not good enough on its own so I add the tinted physical on top. Other than switching to a fully physical SPF is there another type of chemical filter that protects from UVA but doesn’t react that way with the physical/mineral spf? 😩

I've heard that certain types are ok, I have no idea what to think about this or if I should try to avoid this ingredient because it is drying. It seems to be in everthing though. Hi Dry Dray. You said in this video that if we apply avobenzone sunscreen first, then layer it with titanium dioxide sunscreen would cause the avobenzone to degrade. However, in your morning skin care routine video which was uploaded in May 2017, you layered with Neutrogena sunscreen followed by Elta MD sunscreen. I have checked the ingredients of each product and found that the Neutrogena sunscreen contains avobenzone and Elta MD sunscreen contains Titanium dioxide. May I know if it was a mistake that you made or it is because the % of the active ingredient in one or both products are too small to allow the avobenzone to degrade? Thank you in dance for answering my question.

Hi Dr. Dray! Loved the Sunscreen Series. Have you ever heard of the brand ISDIN? They have many products, but one is a zinc sunscreen (Eryfotona Actinica SPF 50) that contains photolyase enzymes, that help repair existing sun damage, as well as vit. E. Hi, I'm a fan of your product reviews (and in general). I'm curious what you think about Neutrogena's Hydro Boost SPF 15 product. It seems to be very similar to the hylauronic acid product sold in jars that you use except advertised as with sun protection. I get that sometimes general statements and "easy to remember rules" need to be made to account for the ignorant general public but I teach doctors for a living and and I get tired of hearing them regurgitate nonsense that they once heard and sticks with them instead of learning the right thing and educating the public properly. It depends on what activity you're doing to calculate how often you should be re-applying ex: swimming, running, sipping lemonade in the shade etc. You should also strive to use minimum 30spf anything more is unnecessary and only possesses a minuscule more amount of protection. @@CrashCarson14

Hi Dr Dray! I am a big fan of your videos, they are a great source of knowledge!!! I am based in Ireland so I don't always "get" the culture related stuff, but I still enjoy watching!
    I have two questions:
Question no. 1: Is it OK to use the "beach" sunscreen on a daily basis for face? I found one that is mixed, contains titanium dioxide but also some chemical sunscreens. It is Boots brand Soltan Kids Once Water Play. It is a "baby" sunscreen and can be applied to body and face. So that is question one.
Question no. 2: the sunscreen I mentioned above contains propylene glycol. Is it safe to use in the everyday skincare routine? I read that it has not really been tested on humans and yet it is approved for use in the EU. Are you familiar with any research that shows that it is /is not harmful?
Thank you and have a good day!
