I'm not doubting the importance of sunscreen but I have to ask why it's SO expensive relative to the amount we'd need to be using to effectively apply and reapply every single day. For things like cleansers and moisturizers, it's often easy to find affordable, effective products that will last you months because you're expected to go through so much, but sunscreen? It's expected that you'll pay 20, 30, 50 dollars for less than TWO ounces of fluid on average. Speaking as somebody that wants to take care of my skin but legitimately can't afford that kind of repeat cost every month or two months, I wish there were dermatologist-developed sunscreens that place an emphasis on affordability relative to its necessity. If sunscreen is important for everybody to use every day, then its accessibility should reflect that in the amount you're given for the cost.

I get what you mean! It's so frustrating to find sunscreens that don't irritate my skin or eyes or don't have a white cast just to see that they are super expensive. With proper application and reapplication, a 50 ml tube will last you about one week which is ridiculous.

I suffer from the same issue as well. i’m a student and for me, the best way to handle this is to find a cheap body sunscreen with no white cast that’s not gonna irritate my skin/clog my pores, apply it and (because it’ll probably look greasy) apply a layer of powder. cetaphil daylong has a really affordable spf30 spray sunscreen (150ml) that has a more lotion-like consistency with new generation european sunscreen filters, which I think you could definitely check if your skin can handle denatured alcohol (3rd ingredient)

I don't have the money to be using sunscreen 3x a day, let alone every 90 minutes. I just feel like the obsession with ageless skin is so intense these days. I am interested in skin care but watching stuff like this makes me feel like I'm doing something wrong and I just don't have the mental energy to be able to fixate on my skin this intensely. I'm not judging anyone for applying sunscreen several times a day, cause at the end of the day it's your money and your time. But I just find it hard to believe that we need to apply this much sunscreen for our whole lives or else we're doing everything wrong. Does anyone else feel this way? Modern skincare stresses me out!

I'd whine about it if it's just something like essences or serums or masks or toners. But this is sunscreen, one of the most BASIC pillars of skincare. It's avoiding skin damage and possibly cancer.
You don't have to fixate on it, just slap on the damn thing and forget about it for a few hours before doing it again. Fretting over the smallest thing will age you faster than thinking about how many sunscreen reapplications one should do daily. Whittle down your skincare routine to the basics if it stresses you out.
For skincare, you can do a lot of things without... Except sunscreen (along with cleansing and moisturizing).

No actually I do not feel this way...but I do not know, I think I have reached a point in my life that I judge myself based on my previous self and try to improve based on that, not on the ideal behaviour. Dr Dray is going to talk about what the optimal is, and bearing in mind what the optimal is is always good. But a message like this is not having me feel that I'm not good enough or I'm doing something wrong...I think the only thing one would be doing wrong is internalising the message in this fashion.
I enjoy doing my skincare and try to remember to be as sensible as possible, but I am not going to give myself shit if I have a day or two when I don't reapply 3 times. I keep it simple so I don't sabotage my efforts, and I'm happy I'm doing something vs nothing.
I don't think Dr Dray is responsible if people go nuts about it and end up stressing out. You just acknowledge the risks and play this game of life within your own limitations.

not really... I guess it depends on the person. But I believe it's always the best to make a decision after knowing. You can always just not care as much as these people. The people you see in the comments/youtube are the tiny minority that are heavily invested in skincare compared to the general population, so yeah it does kinda make you feel like it's the "norm" to always apply sunscreen. But tbh I don't really care, I'm only applying sunscreen when outdoors, even after knowing all these info. I'm just not as invested to my skin as them. Yea I might have some wrinkles when I age, but honestly when I'm 60 years old I probably won't care about how I look as much as I do today.

For someone who has suffered from oily skin through my teen years, and all of my adult life (I am 27 now), the oil that builds up quickly on my face ALONE was enough to make me look like I dipped my face in grease. Dickinson's Witch Hazel Wipes are one of my best friends. I only started applying sunscreen to my face about 2-3 years ago. 2 years of using SPF 15 because that was the only number I could tolerate, and the past year I've been using SPF 30 (Eucerin) because the formulation is so light.
However, yesterday I started adapalene, and I want to up my SPF to 50 (Walgreens Sensitive SPF 50) but I don't have what it takes in my soul to reapply over a previous layer of sunscreen + enough oil to fry an egg on my face. I will always use a witch hazel wipe to gently remove my oil. (Pure witch hazel, not the wipes that leave films)

    • @Es3iya
      @Es3iya 4 года назад +10

I kind of noticed that reapplication is possible only if i blot my face with tissue paper or something, then it removes some of the existing layer, but still ends up being greasier than before, after applying just half of the recommended amount. Reapplication is just a messy business.

For people with oily skin, look for a sunscreen that is light-weighted. When comparing the texture, Korean sunscreen has a more liquidy formulation which favors wearing it underneath makeup or for reapplication when compared to US-made or European sunscreen. Sometimes I feel that dr Dray is a bit of a perfectionist and a bit scared of aging, which for me it’s something that we shouldn’t promote. This “for ever young” look or the pursuit of that can cause so much damage. One thing is to be aware of how dangerous is to burn under the sun, and other thing it’s been obsessed with any ray of light that touches your skin. • @username46946
      @username46946 4 года назад +38

Hi Yumi, you are correct that we have better UVA protection in Europe than in America, because of the next-generation filters. However, the sunscreen filters are not the only indicator of performance of a sunscreen at all - you need to consider the film-forming ability of the sunscreen, and how well it handles water/sweat. That is why European sunscreens also instruct the user to apply 15-30 min before going outside: the filters will start to protect against UV as soon as they are out of the bottle, but the full protection will not be present until the film fully forms on the skin.
You can consider make-up for this analogy: after a few hours it can start to crack, or change aesthetics (especially in highly mobile areas such as around the mouth and eyes). The same thing happens to sunscreens, regardless of where it was formulated, and the film loses efficacy and consequently, the protection is lowered.
I highly encourage you to reapply European sunscreens - I typically apply in the morning, and then again around 11h00 (that gives me roughly 3 hours in between). That time is also when the sun is generally strongest. My other application is at around 14h00 after the sun peak, and again at around 18h00 (such as before I exercise).
      Hopefully this helps.

in Europe where I live it also became a kind of sunscreen obsession. Girls reapplying spf in the office, removing makeup 3 times a day and reapplying everything. I must say I dont use spf at home because I would have to buy a new product every week (50ml - lets say 5ml or so a day, or more) when I'm outdoors I reapply after two hours and then I go home and wash it off. even when I reapply once people look at me like I'm crazy, which compared to dr d I'm normal lol

Looks like a reasonable strategy:) I very much appreciate Dr. Dray's videos, I came across them just a little over two months ago and have changed my skincare routine completely for the better. The sunscreen topic is the only one where I still have doubts. While I do believe that proper sun protection is necessary (and I've made my mistakes in the past as well - walking without sunscreen whatsoever in South-East Asia was a horrible idea, but I knew nothing about proper skincare at that time), being overly obsessed with religious reapplying regardless of the factors, like season, time of the day, latitude of the place where you are, UV index and actually how much time one spends in the sun does not look very convincing to me. After all, when there were no proper sunscreens, not all of our predecessors died because of the skin cancer, right? I have heard multiple doctors, not only derms, say that sunscreen is actually the last step you should resort to if you cannot 1) avoid spending time in the sun at all 2) make use of protective clothing, umbrellas and hats. Bidding on SPF alone and ignoring these two factors looks like an illusion to me

I'm latina, and yes, I do bleach my hair, but to have a whiter appearance is definitely not the reason why I use sunscreen. I have to explain to them it's because I don't want to have wrinkles and hyperpigmentation, I don't know why they won't understand that.

I don’t think regular clothes provide that much UV protection though...if light can get through the fabric, it’s not protecting you much. I don’t want to apply sunscreen underneath clothes so I’m thinking about investing in UPF clothing.

Reapplying indoors 3 times a day is SO ridiculous to me, I acutally loled. The 2 hours thing too. Sounds more like a marketing campaign. I apply and reapply sunscreen, the same way I am changing tampons, not based on someone's rule, but on my needs. Sometimes more often, sometimes less often.

Is the “water resistant” claim similar to or the same as the “sweat resistant” claim? I often find that after I’ve applied sunscreen to my face, and I’m waiting the 20-30 mins. before going out, I start sweating it off. :-/

I’m curious how the recommended quantity of sunscreen changes based on direct vs indirect light. If I’m 5 ft from an East-facing window, is my risk still as high in the afternoon?

Im so happy you're going to be doing a video on SPF and wearing makeup. I have to wear foundation during the week at work and always wonder if Im diminishing the SPF efficacy. Also I use a mattifying primer before SPF and was wondering if that too might interfere with the SPF. Thanks for all you do :)

Never been this early! Hi, Dr. Dray 🌞
May you please do (another) insta post/ YT video about hydroquinone. I stopped using it after 4 months. What is the longest one can use it successively? How long of a break must one take before resuming its use. And during that sabbatical, can one use other melanin-suppressive ingredients, like tranexamic acid, arbutin, or licorice root?

The reapplying without washing your face did create a very negative reaction on my skin! When I was in Hawaii and many natives there also were having the same problem! The problem is you sweat, you swim, sweat some more and keep applying product . My forehead developed bumps all over, black heads, white heads and an angry look. I was in my destination wedding and honeymoon. Not fun!! And my cleansing routine was meticulous, religious and detailed. I was using great safe products, but I couldn’t beat the reapplications over sweat and seawater. So. I have to disagree about that from tested experience. And when I’m not in Hawaii I simply only apply it once in the morning and once after lunch (powder SPF over the morning
sunscreen fluid). After 5pm the uva is lower and I reach for hat and shade. My car has a tinted window. Even my dermatologist agreed on this one, in order to keep skin happy:-).

You know... I really appreciate the advice and I respect that it comes from a dermatologist. However, I would never EVER apply sunscreen according to these rules. I am rather proud that I started using sunscreen on my face and exposed areas ONCE a day and it actually took me ages to find an SPF product that my skin would tolerate once a day. Because 99 out of 100 sunscreens, either mineral or chemical, make my skin freak out completely. They are sticky, they are greasy, they clog my pores, I can literally watch my skin break out from them, some even hurt and burn. And believe me I have tried them ALL. Because I am fair-skinned and know my risks. But sunscreen is something so highly uncomfortable and skin-ruining for me that the utmost I can do is apply it once a day. That’s it. The mere idea of re-applying layer after layer of the stuff on sweaty, sandy skin on the beach... no. Just no. The feeling would drive me insane. I’d rather cover up with clothing and a hat and sit in the shade.

    • @aimeeburch8329

I struggle with that to. Every single drugstore sunscreen breaks me out. My face and chest. If course those are places that I pay close attention to with applying my sunscreen. I guess I just deal with the breakouts
But when I apply body sunscreen I get so sticky and gross feeling. I have to put alot on frequently to or I burn. I hate it. But I could never put that much on my face it would be a disaster. Of course if I am at the river or something I wont have makeup on more than likely so I could reapply more often than say a work day. But still. I cant stand to be sticky.

I feel you. Everytime I apply sunscreen more than once a day, it doesn't matter which sunscreen, it breaks me out or triggers my rosacea. And I know it is a controversial opinion in the skincare community but tbh if you only apply it once a day, you're already doing much more for your skin and health then the majority of people. You shouldn't have to make yourself feel icky in your skin.

tried looking for this info online finding nothing. when not using sunscreen my skin tans ( im a fast tanner, and i try to avoid the sun as much a possible. )
but when i do use sunscreen my skin borns from the sun. instead of just tanning it goes red and sore. maybe as a doctor you heard about something like that. because here doctors dont really take it seriously.
