Watching your channel grow is truly encouraging. I'm so glad you are sharing your knowledge and educating people based off science and not just trends. You're the best Dr. Dray🙌🏾❤❤💯
You can use it with AHA, BHA, vit c or BPO. She's staying that it could lead to irritation for beginners, I'm an advance user and I combine BHA, Azaleic acid and retin a 0.025. Great results without irritation. Been using it since quite a few years. Retinoids play very well with other ingredients, it's just people have tendency to over do it and that's what Dr has been saying.
Do you use all of them every day? I currently use vitamin C and azaleic acid in the morning, and retinoid and niacinamide in the evening; twice a week I do an acid instead of the retinoid. I wondered if all this was overkill? I mainly hear of azaleic acid for pregnant women or those irritated by retinoids, so wondered if there was any benefit to using both.
Yes, and I think I have contributed to this. I'm glad to have the answers, but also I'm totally flipping out. Explains a lot about why I have had reactions though.
Thank you for the wonderful content, Dr. Dray! Would you be so kind as to address the care of facial hair/beards: cleansing, moisturizing, general maintenance? Most beard products, washes, and balms are filled with fragrance and are problematic. Thank you again for your helpful channel.
I have used vitamin C and retinal together (one directly on top of the other; vitamin C first then retinol) and I have also used salicylic acid and retinol together both combinations several times and I never had a problem. I have also used multiple cleansers along with vitamin C and literally never had a single problems. Does this woman actually know what she’s talking about?! I use a salicylic acid face cleanser AND a salicylic acid serum along with a vitamin C serum and I have NEVER had a problem.
I love that you answered my question on using the same ingredients. You and your content is changing lives and the quality of skin care! Thank you, Dr. Dray!!

I am about one and half months into using tretinoin at .05 percent. I made tons of mistakes during the first month. Using glycolic acid on the nights I didn’t us the trentinoin. At first I was disappointed at not getting.1 percent of the trentinoin, lol. Anyway this is a place where the doctor knows best! Now I am used to using the prescription every night. I still get stinging but I tolerate it fairly well. Still get dryness but I’m sticking with it. I’m thinking that perhaps more in 3 or 4 months I’ll see som noticeable difference. Thanks for the information. Love your videos.
I use both an AHA and Vit C in my night routine lmao but I'm loving the effect. I top it off with a centella essence and my skin has never been the smoothest.
I've been thinking/wondering about this lately!!! I almost mixed my moisturizer with retinol with a new AHA serum I got😨 Thank you Dr. Dray! Me and my mom love you
What I appreciate most about your videos (besides the info you share) is how get directly to the point of the subject. You don't do a useless 30 second into or add a ton of annoying editing with sound effects and other clips. Thank you for that!😅
I used to use Alpharet before I went on to prescription Trazorac. It’s based on a patented compound consisting of Retinol and AHA. I used it for 6 months while building up my tolerance to actual prescription strength retinoids. So NO, you can use Retinol with AHA if it’s formulated together. Alpharet is also endorsed by a plastic surgeon I follow on Ytube. I have super sensitive skin and it is very gentle for such a high strength Retinol AHA combo.
Dr. Dray specifically said, several times, that if the manufacturer made a product with a combination she suggests not to use together, it was because the manufacturer had tested the specific combination for safety and eficacy!
When dose it count as mixing? When it’s all used in one setting? One item at the beginning in the day and one at night? Or does it count if it’s within the same week?
I don’t know what flared up my Rosacea because my skin was looking pretty good. I’m blaming the sunscreen. I used neutropenia sunscreen in the past and had horrible rash like acne so switched to a different brand that seemed ok. I never used sunscreen daily, only when going out in the sun in nice weather, so I thought I’d do what every dermatologist recommended and use it daily, that’s when I started breaking out like crazy again. But I stopped using everything and am following Dr Drays advice to keep it simple. The darn sunscreen is still making me break out though.
For those that need the short answer. It seems to be generally recommended to use Benzoyl Peroxide in the morning and Differin Adapalene gel at night. But Benzoyl Peroxide and Differin Adapalene gel can be used together. Differin Adapalene gel is a form of topical vitamin A that actually remains stable in the presence of Benzoyl Peroxide. It is literally what prescription medication Epiduo(a combination of Benzoyl Peroxide and Adapalene) is. You can find a few studies on the subject in the National Library of Medicine. However, combining both products together could cause skin irritation and dryness for individuals that have more sensitive skin. Also some additional studies show that the lower percent Benzoyl Peroxide products work with pretty much the same efficiency as the products with higher percent for acne. So if you want to use Benzoyl Peroxide and Differin Adapalene gel together at night it may be beneficial to go for a Benzoyl Peroxide Cleanser with lower percent because it can be less irritating and just as effective for treating acne as higher percents. But as always you need to try these things out for yourself, monitor progress over the course of 4 to 6 weeks, and adjust as needed to see what works best for you and your skin. If you require a more personal assessment then it would probably be best to see a Dermatologist.
I was using a cleanser with niacinamide, a toner with salicylic acid and taking oral Vit C and then boom, breakout! I did not know first about this mixing active ingredients. Now the lessons learned. 😅
Why would an oral vitamin C interfere with topical ingredients? My take away from this is she was talking about mixing topically applied ingredients. I don’t remember her ever mentioning oral vitamin C.
@@pjschmid2251 hi, I was just sharing my experienced. As for my experienced, it just happens that I've experienced it from oral Vit C and not from topical. Just saying. 🤷♀️
Yes! I accidentally added a peptide to my routine, behind my vitamin c, and woke up very uncomfortable! Thankfully, I know it's the peptide because it's the newest addition. So now I'm just trying to keep the irritation calm. It's been a full 24 hours, and the swelling under my eyes is down.

I don't know, I'm more partial to Ice Cube and Eazy E, but she's pretty good too. The Chronic was a good album. Sorry, been holding in a Dr. Dre reference for months now. But I definitely agree, she has lots of great useful skin care tips.
This timing is perfect. I started breaking out quite heavily all over my face and had no clue what was going on. But just started to use a bha exfoliating tonic and retinol cream. Even though I only used this combination twice a week, the effect is very intense! I stopped using the retinol and hope my skin will clear up.
Thanks for this video. I was wondering if using lactic acid and glycolic acid would be too much. Now I know! Also didn't know not to combine vit c and soap, thats a good tip.
I use Salicylic acid in Murad cleanser at night. Followed by Retin a micro. I’ve never had any problem. My face is extremely oily, so bad that I was on antibiotics, Retin a, and finally accutane at 45 yrs old. Finally have my acne under control now at 50.

After much stress and deliberation I’ve decided the only specific ingredient (other than sunscreen) I look for is niacinamide. Keeps it simple and saves money :)
Very good tip about using vitamin c during the day and copper peptides at night. But my concern is that I use retinoids at night as well. Can I layer retinoids and copper peptides?
Another good way of using retinol and AHA/BHA safely is to alternate nights. I've been using a system by ASAP (Australian brand) that uses Vit ABC & an acid blend. Great results!
Re the first combo; what if the AHA is from an exfoliating toner (I use the AHA BHA PHA 30-day Miracle Toner)? At night, which is the only time I use the toner, I apply Tretinoin after moisturizing. I can’t wait for you to hit 1m! I keep checking.
I’m going to be honest, I combine AHAs/BHAs with my tretinoin all the time. I also have very resilient skin so I’ve never had irritation from the combo. Try what works!
Ok, vitamin C with no cleansers and Vitamin C without peptides is new to me. I will try to avoid using those together. I intend to remove Vitamin C from my routine eventually, when I finish the ones I have already bought anyways.
Such great information, Dr. Dray! I was wondering if there is an issue with mixing azelaic acid and retinol. I’m sorry if you have mentioned this beforehand, but I just introduced azelaic acid into my skin care routine, and I am on tretinoin as well. Any information you can provide would be wonderful. Thank you so much!
Great video! Where in the routine can I add the Hyaluronic Acid? Can I use it with Retinol at night ? I use now just a plain moisturizer and then retinol on top before bed . Thank you DR DRAY
Just use Vit C serum in the morning after cleansing your face with water only and apply sunscreen to boost sun protection. Thats it! You dont need much in the morning. Night time, cleanse with your cleanser, maybe a toner after that, apply either Ordinary Buffet, Matrixyl, or HA, followed by a moisturizer and then your Retinol! Boom! Simple & effective
Hello Dr. Dray ,I want to thank you for all your hard work .I’ve learned so much from you. I hope you have a wonderful Thanksgiving. Tell mom hello, I hope mom is doing good. Give Tybee a big hug for me . Bless you and mom.
Hey dr dray, love your videos! Would you please do a video on your thoughts of apple cider vinegar for the face? I have seen it all over the internet, but would love to know your thoughts! :) have a good day 💙💙
She's mentioned it before but I can't remember when. ACV is actually way too acidic for the skin even when diluted. She really has a negative opinion on DIY skincare in general. The reasons are: 1. Natural ingredients have too many volatile chemical components which degrade 2. Home formulations are incredibly variable and not tested for safety 3. Most of the beneficial molecules are in the wrong concentration to work 4. Many recipes include physical exfolients, enzymes, strong acids, or strong bases which all are leading causes of irritation and may cause infection. Basically, if you're not a chemist and you aren't familiar with the hard research, you are not qualified to make your own skincare. Not even Dr. Dray makes stuff on her own.

1. Retinoid + alpha hydroxy acids
2. Retinoid + benzoyl peroxide

I wish all dermatologist as as passionate as you are. As always, we very much appreciate your videos. I am so glad I found your channel 😊
I take that pycnolgenol is the same thing as the vitamin C with the peptides. I use the peptides with the tretion and night time and the antioxidants with the sunscreen
Thank you!!! What about retinol with hylauronic acid? Can they be combined?
I am 66 and your video's have helped me so much as what to use and what not to use together. Thank you
Ooh this was Dr Dray at her best!! Thanks for putting the info across very well 😎. Another advantage of introducing a new product slowly is that it’s easier to spot the culprit if an allergy or skin issue occurs. Happy Tuesday 🥳🥳🇬🇧🇬🇧
Yay Dr Dray! This is very timely, as I have recently started tretinoin. Thanks so much!!!
thanks for watching
FYI, now I’m chanting “Yay Dr Dray!”
Ah yes, the question you must be asked 100 times a day.
Yes, and I think I have contributed to this. I'm glad to have the answers, but also I'm totally flipping out. Explains a lot about why I have had reactions though.
Your skin is so glowy and healthy. Natural beauty through skincare… love this!
Thank you for the wonderful content, Dr. Dray! Would you be so kind as to address the care of facial hair/beards: cleansing, moisturizing, general maintenance? Most beard products, washes, and balms are filled with fragrance and are problematic. Thank you again for your helpful channel.
I combine tretinoin with glycolic acid and hydroquinone every night and I have no issues with my skin.
I wonder which will come first, my one year anniversary of discovering you, or 1 million 😄
thank you so much for all of your support!
@@DrDrayzday You deserve it 😊
I have used vitamin C and retinal together (one directly on top of the other; vitamin C first then retinol) and I have also used salicylic acid and retinol together both combinations several times and I never had a problem. I have also used multiple cleansers along with vitamin C and literally never had a single problems. Does this woman actually know what she’s talking about?! I use a salicylic acid face cleanser AND a salicylic acid serum along with a vitamin C serum and I have NEVER had a problem.
Excellent and very informative video, thanks for sharing such great content!
Glad it was helpful!
Oh no. I combine retinol with salicylic acid 😊 But so far it doesn't give problem to my skin.
I love that you answered my question on using the same ingredients. You and your content is changing lives and the quality of skin care! Thank you, Dr. Dray!!
what did you use on your skin right before this video?? chin, forehead, right next to your nose has pearly glow!
I have mixed all of these ingredients together.... ha...
No irritation luckily, but dryness on my nose only. Very informative video, thank you Dr. Dray! c:
Same thing here, bro 😊
I use Sunday Riley and they say you can use retinol and lactic acid. My skin loves it
I love using benzoyl peroxide and then tretinoin after! My skin loves it so much. I’m finally seeing improvement and no irration because I moisturize really well and use sunscreen everyday
@@Love-dc5tq the retinol marks cream I use saids that you can combine it with benzoyl peroxide gel. I just started doing it today. Why would it say that if it’s not good?
I love the addition of chapters to your videos its so helpful
Thank you dr. Dray. I started watching your channel in March or April of 2020, since then, thanks to you I’ve improved my skincare routine so much that all the issues I had before are almost gone. Thanks and have a great Thanksgiving 😊💕
A year later I'm finally here and I love BHA for bumpy skin to exfoliate for me as it doesn't cause my rosacea to flare and I love tetrinoin for age related issues. So I think you said I can use both, just use bha in AM and tetrinoin in PM, right,Dr Dray? Do not want to make the tetrinoin unefficacious...inefficacious...??? not efficacious 😂🤣🥲 We all love you and appreciate the hard work you do in our behalf. You are my fave dematologist. My local derm tends to my cancerous bumps from NOT USING SUNSCREEN as a child, teen, young adult growing up in Florida. So everyone, Sunscreen&Subscribe to Dr Dray and one day when you are older hopefully you will not need a derm to biopsy cancer on your upper torso...also had 2 on my calves. No place is safe from the harm of the sun...so Sunscreen,y'all!
Dr Dray just said not to invite a new guy to the prom, but stick with the one you know and use it for 4-6 mos before adding a new guy to the dance. Perhaps the one you are dancing with right now, in 4-6 mos he might ask you to his prom and then who knows how that will go. But be patient for a few mos to see how this current relationship is working out before discarding him or inviting a new boy to the prom. Our dance cards do not have to be filled so quickly, in spite of what Miss Elizabeth might have instructed you in Pride&Prejudice. Dr Dray trumps Ms Elizabeth everyday of every week. Patience, dear peeps, patience...sunscreen&subscribe to Dr Dray.
Your content is always great and thanks for sharing your valuable knowledge 💜💜
thank you so much!
Dray! Me and my mom love you
❤️ so glad you made this vdo. Most of my questions are answered here😅 Thank you Dr. Dray. Have a great day.
What I appreciate most about your videos (besides the info you share) is how get directly to the point of the subject. You don't do a useless 30 second into or add a ton of annoying editing with sound effects and other clips. Thank you for that!😅
Great video and explanations, you are such a gem!
Is it ok to use salicylic acid and vitamin c in the same AM skincare routine?
Her definition of mixing is “all used in one setting.” For example, if you use both of these products in your morning skincare routine.
I really like the subtitles of each segment in the video! Your explanations are always concise and straightforward! Thank you very much Dr. Dray!
Thank you for this AWESOME video! I love that you get into the nitty gritty for us skincare nerds. 🙌🏻
I'm going to have to set up a spreadsheet of what can and can't be mixed. LOL
Ummm...will you share that spreadsheet with the rest of us? We're going to need it. HaHa!
There are apps that can help, like MSKD.
That would be great if she did one.
@@jamiesmiles8312 yesssss please share =)
What is topical that she speaks of?
Haaaayyyyyyy Dr. Dray! Thanks for all you do 🎀🎀🤸🏼♀️
Thanks for watching
Yess Dr drayy...Thank you so so much...I have been posting about a video like this constantly on you coments section, so I feel special today....Thank you for always delivering and being upfront about everything....Love you. and my skin says thank you too
Dr dray is the best ❤️
DA baste👍
thank you so much!
Definitely 🙋🏼♀️
I don't know, I'm more partial to Ice Cube and Eazy E, but she's pretty good too. The Chronic was a good album.
Sorry, been holding in a Dr. Dre reference for months now. But I definitely agree, she has lots of great useful skin care tips.
@@ck552 I thought the exact same thing when I first saw her name lol😂
Can you make a video about dermatillomania 🥺👉🏻👈🏻? A lot feel stuck with scars and not knowing how they should be treated or if we even have options when it comes to scab treating/fading scars 💓💓
I made my own skincare rountine after a hell lot of research.......I feel like a master even though I m not and knowing none of my products were clashing is soo nice to here omg❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️
Thank you Dr. Dray for today's vid and advice! ❤️
I literally just put my Revitalift Vitamin C cream on and then out on Differin gel. I'm glad I saw this!
After much stress and deliberation I’ve decided the only specific ingredient (other than sunscreen) I look for is niacinamide. Keeps it simple and saves money :)
My skin can't take niacinamide xD
Very good tip about using vitamin c during the day and copper peptides at night.
But my concern is that I use retinoids at night as well.
Can I layer retinoids and copper peptides?
Another good way of using retinol and AHA/BHA safely is to alternate nights. I've been using a system by ASAP (Australian brand) that uses Vit ABC & an acid blend. Great results!
I always learn something useful from your videos 👍💖😎
Awesome, thank you!
I also have super “tough” skin. It doesn’t well with my routine and I have seen incredible results; all products Dr. Dray approves.
No it’s not. They both work well together
Great video! Where in the routine can I add the Hyaluronic Acid? Can I use it with Retinol at night ? I use now just a plain moisturizer and then retinol on top before bed . Thank you DR DRAY
So basically dont mix vitamin C with anything💁♀️
I literally took it out of my routine because of this.
No its retinol
I use retinol with niacinamide should i stop mixing them?
@@samsam3845 You can mix niacinamide with anything.
Boom! Simple & effective
i was bout to use benzoyl with retinol thank god i watched this
Next: skin care ing You WANT TO MIX
:) have a good day 💙💙
I use it as a toner :) wondering the same thing
She's mentioned it before but I can't remember when. ACV is actually way too acidic for the skin even when diluted. She really has a negative opinion on DIY skincare in general. The reasons are:
1. Natural ingredients have too many volatile chemical components which degrade
2. Home formulations are incredibly variable and not tested for safety
3. Most of the beneficial molecules are in the wrong concentration to work
I was so confused using vitamin C and mixed with retinol, now I understand why my face was dry. 🥴 Thank you Dr. 😊😊😊🌴
I keep reading not to mix glycolic acid and niacinamide, is there any truth to this?
What about Urea? What not to mix with urea? Thank you dr. For your informative videos 💙
I was JUST wondering about layering skin care products/efficacy when mixed. How do you do this Dr. Dray? 🔮 👀
I would also like to know more about layering how-to's.
