I wish there was a type of sunscreen that you didn't have to apply but could just consume like a pill. The sunscreen always gets washed off when I go swimming and I burn very rapidly before even realizing it. Just imagine a type of sun screen that you could take in as a pill and just works for a few hours by making certain chemicals circulate through your blood to your skin.
While this would be nice, there are a lot of hurdles to this. Sunscreen behaves like a barrier, so any sun protection would need to involve an even distribution of protection across the skin (plus the thicker the barrier the better), and I don't think that a pill could effectively dissipate across even the dermis to absorb UVA. Otherwise, I would imagine sunscreen chemicals would inevitably be absorbed anywhere throughout the body (not just the skin layers), and excessive amounts (which could give the best sunscreen protection) would be poisonous if it was in our bodies. Well, maybe if they were small doses that can be directed to deposit near the skin layers that fortifies the skin barrier (preferably the epidermis) over time, maybe a sunscreen pill that absorbed UVA and UVB rays could work? I think burning would still occur to some extent, though, and much like how sunscreens go through a lot of rigorous testing before getting onto shelves, this would probably require much more time.
I have oily, sensitive, acne skin. My favorite sunscreen under makeup is the litttlextra rice berry sunscreen SPF 50. It performs well even under makeup. Over time, it actually brightens my skin, I’m not sure what’s in it, but I really like that. I have already used about 3 to 4 bottles of this sunscreen. One more tip, I also apply rice berry face moisturizer under it and it keeps my skin hydrated.
I’ve already gone through four bottles of Riceberry sunscreen, and also repurchased three more. I’m absolutely in love with it, you should definitely try it!
So now if we are 24 this means we are too old to start using it ? and we’re already damaged ? God help those who are in their 40s when they read comments about age.
I'm from the Philippines. I came from a community of fishermen, our skin is always exposed to sun more than 5hrs everyday since childhood but no one in our entire community had experienced skin cancer even the old ones. We never used sunscreen not even once. Yet we looked younger and don't have much wrinkles. Why is that?
It's a result of natural selection. Specifically, overtime, people lives in areas with high amount of sunlight evolve to have more melanin in there skin, which helps protect their skin against UV rays but also makes them look darker. People live in regions that lack sunlight, on the other hand, evolve to have lighter skins for the opposite reason, to absorb as much sunlight as possible. Skin tone natural selection happens a lot faster than other evolutions, especially in regions with high selection pressure and can take as little as 100 generations. It also explains why Australia and New Zealand have among the highest skin cancer rate in the world, even after taking age into consideration, as majority of their population descended from Europe from around 100 years ago and majority have relatively light skin tone that make them vulnerable to skin cancer.
You're doing everything right. In fact, no one should ever use sunscreen, it prevents you from building your solar callus and producing the Vit D hormone in your body, which in fact, low levels of it are tied to all types of cancers. What everybody should understand is that the way they are built, correlates to a specific latitude in the world, that means, the way your skin is should be tied to the max UV index of that particular place. People is more afraid of the sun than ever before, and sunscreen use and profits are in an all time high. You know what's also in an all time high? Melanoma rates. How can this possibly be? We now live in a toxic blue light world, out of circadian order, avoiding the sun, there's your answer.
Wish he would explain a little more about the chemicals that some sunscreens contain, especially Oxybenzone that seems to be a very questionable ingredient.

+EndErPuppy Yes, there is UVA present all seasons, all weather. UVA passes through clouds, so even when it is overcast, you still need sunscreen. Temperature does not affect this. Look for sunscreen labeled Broad Spectrum or has a PA rating. The highest PA rating is PA++++, so aim for that. A good thing to know is that if you are wearing a chemical sunscreen, those two hours before reapplication are two hours of sun exposure. Modern sunscreen chemicals DO NOT break down when exposed to Ultraviolet Rays! People in the US still think a “tan” is healthy when it really is our skin screaming “please stop you are killing me!”. No tan is healthy!
a completely new kind of sunscreen that lasts more than a month could be based on a thing like transparent Henna. A chemical at henna does a Michael reaction with the keratin protein of skin and links a colored molecule to it durably, not washing off. This could be a completely new anti-photoaging product as a new revenue product. Notably, the UV absorbers in commercial sunscreens last only a few hours, but, fortunately, the UV absorbers in printing inks lasts months. Good point. Humans have evolved hundreds of thousands of years WITHOUT sunscreen and no generation failed to reproduce. Now, suddenly, we get melanomas like never before. Draw your conclusions. Live naturally and avoid these know-it-all “scientists” who completely deny nature.
I'm sorry, but this is the first ted talk where I didn't learn anything. It read like an advertisement for sunscreen. So... The real question I have for you is: why did we not wear this for thousands of years only to suddenly need it NOW? I would be truly appreciative to have an accurate answer to this.
Just a thought, but the average life expectancy in the last thousands of years was very low compared to today. Most people didn’t grow old enough to die from cancers in general, they’d die from bacterial infections prior to the discovery of penicillin, dehydration from diarrhoea or just lack of access to food and water during droughts etc. The same thing is seen today in developed world vs ‘third world’ countries, where in the former people tend to die from age or lifestyle dependent diseases such as CHD, cancer, diabetes etc, and in the latter from largely treatable communicable diseases (and even childbirth).
It's not that we didn't need it back then. It's just that we only fairly recently discovered that sun exposure causes faster aging or even cancer. So sunscreen is one solution to deal with that. Additionally, life expectancy was much shorter, people died of other things before they got skin cancer
Well most died at 50, skin damage is accumulated through your life, we have clear data that it causes premature skin aging and age spots and that cant be refuted, people back in the day and a bunch of people of old age now days look terrible skin wise because of this. Being super wrinkly is not normal if your protected your skin diligently

Aren't you Indian? Indians are a mixed race of ancient Caucasians (aryans) and Africans (dravidians). Most Indians have more dravidian genes, so that's how you get darker skins. Indian's obsession with light skin is ridiculous, that's why you think exposure to sunlight make you darker when it's genetics

I was hoping this video would answer the question of why humans have to use sunscreen to prevent sun burns and other animals don't ever seem to get burned in the first place.
Me wondering why they hate the sun despite it is part of our everyday life and has been so for as long as humans have existed and provides us with vitamin D:🤔 Me remembering the main reason: Wait, you're whi-
It's not about being harmful or not! People who smoke know extremely well what harm they are doing to their bodies. The problem to me is exactly that kind of condescending superiority (typical vegetarians and vegans have for example) that makes people think they are better than others if they eat or do something that is more "healthy". I'm not a smoker nor a drinker but I respect more a person who smokes than a person who keeps thinking himself superior if he doesn't.
I like how they say you shouldn't go outside between 10 AM and 4 PM...Really!? I mean are they actually serious about that? That is the whole day! I understand that this video is supposed to teach the viewer the dangers of the sun, but with giving overzealous rules and harsh consequences, they are doing the opposite. People are smart and will rebel against you if you do that. You can see it in the comments already.
Either that or being a night owl with REALLY good curtains over your windows... Sleeping away the 10am-4pm (about 6 hours out of the ~8 typically recommended) timeslot is one way to well and truly avoid the sun during that period. :P
If you sunbathe with sunscreen you WILL get darker(supposedly even in a more fairer and longer lasting way), less than without but you will. plus, consider that without sunscreen you my get burnt so much that your skin will peel off in which case you'll be paler than before
I know that sunscreens are the best protection against the sun but I wish there was another way to apply it because its so hard and sunscreens also very expensive in turkey

I never wore sunscreen as a kid and now I'm paying the price. I have deep hyperpigmentation that's going to take years if ever to lighten.
Same here
TED-Ed, wanna collab keep it up bro
ME: Who cares about melanoma Everyone cares about tan!
ME LATER: Nooooooo! This ain’t tan
This would have been such a better idea TEDTALKS!!!!! Remember, "Don't panic, if its organic" --- good point, Draftgon. Logic in some of these lotions is "Prevent that skin cancer by using our cheap, chemical-infused cancer-causing lotions!" . Facepalm hard.
the only problem is you still need the sun without sunscreen to get vitamin D which helps prevent against canser and the chemicals used in sunscreen are not very good for you and should only be used when your going out for a long pie rod of time
actually sunscreen doesn't block the absorption of vitamin d so its fine to use
@@marihumanisa7803 Yeah, right. Sunscreen doesn't block your car as well.
I need those sun glasses at 2:03
One Time I was trying to find out
How long can I stay in the sun without sunscreen before having a sunburn?
5-7 hours
If it's not between 10 AM and 4 PM, will I need sunscreen?
HistoryTrainDude nope
HistoryTrainDude I recommend applying until 5:30 pm and start applying at 9:30 am
Never worn sunscreen before never been sun burned
Quelle surprise.
Paigefilms you have dark skin
Paigefilms a burn is not the only type of sun damage that is occurring. Getting a tan is sun damage and leads to hyper pigmentation and cancer, which doesn’t Discriminate everyone gets it 😝
I use because I have acne scar
Sorry, but in Africa we EAT THE sun. Sometimes we dance in the sun till night comes to replace it.
I only use sunscreen to prevent skin cancer and aging
Even still with all the cloud cover, UV rays are still able to hit your skin.
Lessons worth sharing!
Through living in tropical region, I always struggle with this doubt whether I should use sunscreen for protecting from strong sunburn or should refrain from using it that contains lots of chemical substances that cause our skin really dry situation.hah
The chemicals in sunscreen aren’t harmful on your skin, it’s harmful if you eat it
Good point. Humans have evolved hundreds of thousands of years WITHOUT sunscreen and no generation failed to reproduce. Now, suddenly, we get melanomas like never before. Draw your conclusions. Live naturally and avoid these know-it-all “scientists” who completely deny nature.
Do some research for a healthy sun screen. Try applying moisturizer like Cerave before sun screen if youre dry.
Excellente vidéo ! C’est tout à fait ce que je recherche mais en français. Pour des élèves de 7/8 ans :/

my brother got sick like 2 months after his birth. When he was in hospital nurses use to take to the roof to expose him to sun. now after 20 years i realize why he is twice as much darker than me.
That's not how it works
it could just be natural yk
Aren't you Indian? Indians are a mixed race of ancient Caucasians (aryans) and Africans (dravidians). Most Indians have more dravidian genes, so that's how you get darker skins. Indian's obsession with light skin is ridiculous, that's why you think exposure to sunlight make you darker when it's genetics
I rarely ever apply sunscreen and only ever have been burned twice
I live in a cave pretty much. It's called my room.
Eat fish, mushrooms, eggs, liver, fortified cereal, and drink milk and orange juice and you'll be good to go.
I was hoping this video would answer the question of why humans have to use sunscreen to prevent sun burns and other animals don't ever seem to get burned in the first place.
they have thicker skin and fur / lots of body hair
🤑🤑🤑 always follow the money, and current reports linking skin cancer to sunscreen. The beauties of 10 year old videos. We know nothing 😁👍

We do?
Fearing sun is like fearing life.
So, we should all embrace cancer and be happy people have it?
Enjoy your wrinkles and age spots
@@nairbdelrey1561 Can someone, who fears life enjoy something?
@@stefankant2612 lmao no fear its called precaution and it does not take that much time or effort 🙄
Me wondering why they hate the sun despite it is part of our everyday life and has been so for as long as humans have existed and provides us with vitamin D:🤔

Great video work specially the animation helps easy understanding and make it fun
Also, make sure you're using sunscreen that is eco-friendly and doesn't use aerosol or chemicals that are harmful to the ocean!
Why do we not have as much?
I like how they say you shouldn't go outside between 10 AM and 4 PM...Really!? I mean are they actually serious about that? That is the whole day! I understand that this video is supposed to teach the viewer the dangers of the sun, but with giving overzealous rules and harsh consequences, they are doing the opposite. People are smart and will rebel against you if you do that. You can see it in the comments already.
!???
ok

They tell u to avoid the sun between those times, not really not to go AT ALL

Either that or being a night owl with REALLY good curtains over your windows... Sleeping away the 10am-4pm (about 6 hours out of the ~8 typically recommended) timeslot is one way to well and truly avoid the sun during that period. :P
Without suntan my skin looks badly. Is there way to speed up tanning without UV damage?
DMTbliss NewWay tanning lotion
If you sunbathe with sunscreen you WILL get darker(supposedly even in a more fairer and longer lasting way), less than without but you will. plus, consider that without sunscreen you my get burnt so much that your skin will peel off in which case you'll be paler than before
@@rita7070 just...wrong
tanning is a form of skin damage
Very informative and amusing! Please edit "it's" to be the possessive "Its" at :16...so that it reads correctly "...all of its good qualities..."
Sounds nice
i like being in the sun ... better wear sun screen :-)
*FOODA MOMENT*
Why is a nursery channel here? Genuinely curious.
I know that sunscreens are the best protection against the sun but I wish there was another way to apply it because its so hard and sunscreens also very expensive in turkey
One of my best friends absolutely refuses to wear sunscreen. When I brought it up just today, she replied “Well how long do you think that’s on the shelf? How long are those oils on the shelf?” Bruh. The same time that your makeup, perfume, shampoo, conditioner, food and drinks are. AND she likes to go tanning 🤦🏼♀️ She’s literally had a med student to tell her off and she still won’t wear it. I honestly don’t think she’ll listen to anyone about how important it is.
Let her learn the hard way.Wheneever I tell my family why I wear a lot of sunscreen, they always tell me off but then they burn and can't sleep on their back, but guess who can😂
shouldn't *
Very interesting and informative video.
What if I only walk through the sun to work which takes about 10 mins a day.
luckly i live in a cave called my mom's basement
This is why I love cloudy days😔
Sun rays still penetrate clouds they dont stop UVA rays at all. UVA is not felt by the person like UVB which burns
eew, I hate those depressive days
Sunray is everywhere even cloudy day😎
You can still be harmed by UVB rays even at a cloudy day
Does sunscreen prevent you from synthesizing vitamin D from sunlight?
No
If children below 6 months should not be exposed to sunlight, then how are they supposed to get vitamin D? In that case won't they develop rickets?
Sreshtha Nayek do not OVER expose them and it also depend on their skin tone
