Pete made a tab and lesson video if anyone is up for learning the song ;) lesson video: How to Play: Progressive Metal Town, USA | Pete Cottrell Pete: ruclips.net/user/peteplaysmusic tab: dft.ba/-ProgressiveTABtown
Got an idea, opened Songsterr, searched Rob Scallon, saw like a hundred tabs and passed out... Well I know what I'm learning for like the next 5 years! Thanks Rob for putting all this stuff up on the interwebs you're doing this world a good'n :)
That is probably the most expressive playing I've ever heard coming from an 8-string guitar. Most of the time, it's just these hacks playing these atonal, start/stop riffs on the low F# string that sound like dinosaur farts. In this case, Rob's playing is very melodic, and the bass strings just accent that instead of being the main focus, which sounds quite refreshing.
I'm not really a prog metal kinda guy, but I'm a prog guy. You'd be impressed by how awesome 13 minutes or more can be. I'd have to agree, though. Length doesn't necessarily make prog what it is, though it is quite characteristic of it.
Prog is more than just nutty time signatures, do to longer songs and extended structures, it creates a world within the music (Gustav Mahler had a phrase for it but I forgot). The only genres that really pull it off are prog, Ambiant, classical (if it can suck you in), and psychedelic stuff. I think the repetitiveness of this keeps in from being really in the spirit of prog. Still a great song though
"In 1907, Mahler met Jean Sibelius, whose symphonies are the polar opposite of Mahler's: compressed, distilled, self-referential. The composers discussed the meaning of the symphony. Sibelius admired its "profound logic and inner connection". Mahler completely disagreed: "A symphony must be like the world," he said. "It must embrace everything." And Mahler really did turn that all-encompassing embrace into sound: in a piece like the Eighth Symphony, you hear the whole world, in a range of references from ancient hymns to Goethe's Faust, and in music that is the apotheosis of every large-scale musical form: symphony, oratorio, mass, even opera."
+Richard Harrold that's awsome, thanks for that quote, but let me go check online bc I think he had a specific name for it. (Really enjoy the quote though)
+Richard Harrold that's awsome, I haven't heard it yet. (I was working through the Mahler symphonies, and I got like partway through the 3rd, but then I kinda put it on hold for Brahms symphonies) btw I found it and the two phrases were "world of its own" and "sound of a distance"
Ryan Sanders Also check out Bruckner - I especially love the 7th. My local composer, Ralph Vaughan Williams (who called Mahler "a tolerable imitation of a composer"!) was nothing short of a genius - but the biggest, grandest of the lot was by an amateur from the Midlands - Havergal Brian, whose Gothic Symphony has only been performed a handful of times - makes Mahler Eight look like a string quartet.
This is an absolutely beautiful song. I'm glad people like you are on RUclips and can reach out to around the world. Thank you for being an inspiration - all the way from Angola.
Guys, this riff at 2:04 and 3:46 is pure magic. So inspirational, so true, so deep, you really achieved something huge there, everytime I listen to it, immediate chills, I close my eyes, warmness all over my body, but in a really special way, it's not like it sounds good it's that it says something fucking true, masterpiece.
This is one of my favorite instrumentals because it creates such amazing visuals in my head, almost like I'm by the beach side, calm and mellow, followed by the craziness of high tide. Rob if you see this, please consider making a longer version of this song :)
Hands down one of the prettiest songs I have ever heard. With such a great collaboration I have to ask, have you and Pete ever even met? You two seem to have a decent musical chemistry.
One of my all time favorite tunes you’ve written. You are an everyday inspiration for musicians everywhere. I love that you love music, not just guitar and do all the vids with new and unusual instruments
This is the coolest song to listen to after a long day just sit back relax spark up a joint or crack open a a beer and then let the darkness consume you until you need to wake up and start the dreadful lull of life
Probably one of the best things I can say about this highly impressive performance is that it doesn´t only transmits a kind of musicality difficult to find nowadays but also that it has the ability to depict images in your brain as if the chords and the notes where painting a beautiful canvas. Greetings from Spain, keep on playing.
This song is the most amazing thing I've heard in a long time and all i do is listen to music all day long i DJ part time I love this song it makes me feel powerful
Mr. Scallon, you won my heart many moons ago. If I had the confidence (and/or the ability) I would follow in your footsteps and go full time into my music!
I love that you own an extended range guitar, and that you ACTUALLY USE THE ENTIRE RANGE OF IT! Bro, seriously? Your music is killer! Keep it up! Much love and many blessings!
I can't explain waht i feel when i hear this song, it's just, man, so many things come to my mind, i think about everything, and especially, i don't know why, i think about someone who's really special for me, i don't need say her name but, is amazing who i can see in my mind and i feel in my heart all the time i lived and i will live with her, you're fucking awesome :D
Spectacular, this is pro tech metal 101 advanced lesson. In spite of that this is a very good song ranging from the textures and landscapes to varied multi layered heavier parts. I have been listening to metal and prog for some many time that I know a great and unique piece of art in the genre instantly.
Niiiiice, gives me a bit of an Animals as Leaders vibe!
Thanks Dave!
The idea behind this song was "play exactly what people would expect from an 8 string" so yea, Animals as Leaders.
Rob Scallon THis is better than any Animals as Leaders song that I've heard.
Animals As Leaders 'are technical but they cannot make a good song'
Alex051993 Then obviously you haven't listened to a lot of Animals As Leaders... :)
AAL are unlistenable
I got 99 time signatures but 4/4 ain't one
I think is 7/4
+BlindeyesTV there's 14/4, I have tab pro and checked it out
It changes between 4/4 and 3/4, so you could say it's 4/4, 7/4 and 13/4.
I think I'm getting this now; so mixed meter, at 75bpm: 8/8 and 7/8, or 150bpm: 8/4 and 7/4.
Counting 7/8 in quarters is ridiculous.
Pete made a tab and lesson video if anyone is up for learning the song ;)

blackjackmcgack There're schecter dimond + for 8 string and passive Cepheus i guess
Антон Утенков Schecter make a pickup for 8 strings?
This gives me chills SO HARD.
oh god that part thats liek dun dun duuh dun dun dun
Contortionists As Leaders
chickenbeforeegg Two bands that have nothing to do with prog
+Funeral Flesh wtf lol
+chickenbeforeegg Between The Buried Animals As Leaders And Me
Scallon The Summit.

How did it go?
@@Cigarcat390 omg lmaooo
really like it, i dont know if this was a joke or not, but I have a soft spot for melodic metal.
JwblackRS If you like melodic, check out Mastodon if you haven't already (specifically Blood Mountain and Leviathan).
Another great mastodon album is crack the Skye
Me too
It is but in a very self aware way. Its probably my favorite track rob has ever done.

"Dinosaur farts." I like that description.
gibbsies Noooope. Both are playing 8s.
+Dartheria Well, to be fair, they are the exceptions rather than the rule when it comes to 8-string players.
+Dartheria Well, to be fair, they are the exceptions rather than the rule when it comes to 8-string players.
you could say the same about all his solo work as well
I don't think the song's long enough to be considered prog. Needs to be at least 13 min
+Zerxyo Sánchez It's not about lenght. He was just joking. Progressive is more about exploring the instrumental than about lenght.
69 minutes ( ͡° ͜ʖ ͡° )
I'm not really a prog metal kinda guy, but I'm a prog guy. You'd be impressed by how awesome 13 minutes or more can be.
I'd have to agree, though. Length doesn't necessarily make prog what it is, though it is quite characteristic of it.
So Pink Floyd isn't prog?
Prog isn't about time
It's about a different way to show the music
Even after more than two years I keep coming back to this track. Thank you for this!
I know I already commented but I literally listen to this song almost every day. Such a good collaboration and amazing sound!
3:24 is just too good...
The best thing about your music rob, is the fact your not afraid to use the whole fretboard, its amazing,. Keep doing what your doing.
I thought it needed an earth shattering solo. Waited for it, never came.
boo hoo :(

The Eighth is also known as the "Symphony of a Thousand", on account of the forces required to perform it!

Thank you for introducing Pete!
The best song I have heard in a while. Didn't came across some good music for a long time
This concept, taking the eight strings with clean sound, is just the coolest thing ever. You are amazing, Rob.
It is really awesome! I wish I could think up the stuff he does. But I am learning... Slowly...
So do I, well, takes some time.
This hits so hard...in every way.
Oh my gosh, this is so beautiful. *.*
Hands down one of the prettiest songs I have ever heard.

And all the feels were felt.
Moody and full of texture. Nicely done, Sir.

Beautiful
I can literally listen to this song forever. Great work as always Rob and Pete!!
Two of my fave 8-stringers jamming together, excellent! Very skillful tremelo picking and skipping strings at the same time :)
That metal transition was godly.

That Omen is such a great guitar for the price. Some of the best stock pickups in existence for an 8 string in my opinion.
Mr. Scallon, you won my heart many moons ago. If I had the confidence (and/or the ability) I would follow in your footsteps and go full time into my music!
