One quote that I always remember from my martial art training (not BJJ) is:
*''You have to be soft to be tough and tough to be soft.''*
What I think it means is that to be tough you have to be able to relax (be soft) because when you relax you're faster
and you have to be tough to be able to relax in a situation that most people can not relax because they're not tough enough.
    And another one:
*''Practicing technique is getting rid of unnecessary movement that wastes energy.
Better physicality allows you to train more technique and the more you train technique
the less you waste energy as you become better.''*
People can train thousands of hours one technique,
but if they don't have the physicality to maintain a good form
at the end of each training session then every time they should be training technique
they're actually training for endurance which is away from the technique training,
because they're tired and can not be as focused and accurate as someone
who has good physicality and can train technique easily many hours and get
all the benefits form that technique training even at the last minutes.

I think Rob Biernacki's "alignment" is better than "position before submission". Statistically "position before submission" doesn't play out as much as people expect, for example the most common guard leading to a sweep at the IBJJF worlds is 50:50! The most common event before a submission is a scramble. It's not saying "position before submission" is wrong, more a debate about what a valid position is.

I don't know though- keep in mind I'm a judoka. Throughout school and my life I was an unathletic nerd. I decided to take up judo and I became obsessed with it. I spent a lot of time on the mat. Whenever I had to move and changed schools, had only done it a year but I was very easily able to throw higher belts at the newer school. I feel like my mat time gave me an advantage.

GM Helio and Carlos come from a time in Brazil which tatoos were a thug thing only. Alchool, cigarettes and other stuff were used in rituals of the Candomblé religion which is associated with the Capoeira (back them seem as a marginal art because was practiced by black people from slums) Jiu-jitsu in the other hand was more an elite thing and the guys who started to make it more accessible for the poor were Carlson Gracie, Rolls and the Fadda Lineage. This is why Carlson seems like he treated his fighters as his property demanding loyalty. In fact Carlson had a paternalistic approach treating his students as sons. He was a casca grossa!

Not only by his moral values but also to preserve his image, Helio avoided everything that could be associated with marginalized behaviour unless someone talks s**. Lately Relson has been focusing to emphasize the importance of self-defence with Rickson and other brothers and he sent aa message to one side of family, "this is my opinion, blue belt who doesn't know how defend himself isn't a grace lineage blue belt if you have anything against that, my GYM is open but I'm also street ready" lol

Really interesting to hear your thoughts on those saying I've heard for a couple years now. The belt holding up your pants always bothered me since it really has nothing to do with your pants. A belt it seems is really like a stamp of authenticity from your professor. It means he feels comfortable allowing you to go out into the world and everywhere you go and to everyone you meet, represent him. It should give you a sort of benchmark of where you are in the wide world or jiu jitsu, most of which you may not experience outside of the 15 or 20 guys maybe in your gym.

No not every one can make it to the NBA. Slam dunking just may be a bit more attainable though, with all of the instructional videos on how to increase your vertical jump. I don't know if reaching the rank of bb is equivalent to making it to the NBA, I do know that people who pay to train anywhere are basically paying an instructor to teach and train them. I think its the instructors job to teach, and the instructor should not give up on them or not take them seriously if they appear to be limited in some way. I don't know how far each individual can go, but its worth their while to give their best shot. Not to sound cliche. I also think the instructor should put forth their best effort to take the most limited student to bb or at least as far as they can take them, even if that means they need to spend a little extra time and give a little more attention to that student.
