Im sorry about your mom Mr. Ryan. I lost my mother about 2 years ago, when she got sick i had to close my school to take care of her. She loved martial arts greatly, and i just got a new class going.i think shed be proud
You did the best thing! You can always run a school. You couldn’t always be there for your sick mom. I did a similar thing with my mom. Would definitely do it again.
Ive done intermittent fasting for like 5 months and its so easy to lose and maintain weight. I use 18/6 usually and i can eat pizza or burgers and a few beers sometimes and it doesnt raise my weight. Now ive done couple of full day fasts and i can train just as well, its all from the mind that u cant train without food. Cardio, grappling etc is easy even after a full day of fasting. Hunger is just a feeling!
Like literally every video so far is stuff I already know but you have such a good down to earth view on things that I find myself watching them all and enjoying them.
Sorry to hear about your mom Professor Ryan. Thanks for sharing. And that's some cutting edge wisdom with respect to the diet and fasting information. I've employed similar strategies in recent times, with great success. I hope this helps many.
working as a primary, ER medical provider, i’ve learned that diabetes has nothing to do with fat, obesity or weight. unfortunately, people can get pancreatic insufficiency or worse a malignant disease throughout their life. that being said, i think you’re completely right about diet as a main source of good health & weight loss
This is AWESOME! I am type 2 and I have high blood pressure, high cholesterol and heart disease. All of which are in normal range now because of meds. I’m 43 and I started Jiu jitsu a month ago to get healthier and one hr kicks my but. I’m fat from 30 years of bad decisions. That last visit I had with the Dr I see for my diabetes told me not to eat if I’m not hungry and of coarse I still try to eat three meals a day cause you know. 30 years of habit. This video seriously made things they have been saying finally click. Thank you so much for taking the time to share on so many topics but especially this one.
Yes sir! I started prolonged fasting as well. The longest I've done is a 5 day dry fast which was pretty extreme for me, but now I'm just doing intermittent and 24 hr, 48hr fasts.
Patrick Goebel according to Cole Robinson the Creator of the Snake Diet, there are several studies that show that dry fasting helps heel the body faster than water fasting. I just wanted to see what it felt like to do it and also you'll cut more fat faster. Water fasting is good though, and it helps to add some Himalayan pink salt to keep your sodium levels up. This will help you keep up your energy levels up and avoid dizzy spells.
So sorry about your mom. Cancer took my mother also. I totally agree with the information you present on this video! I also do daily intermittent fasting, and have for over thirty years. All the recent research is very supportive of this lifestyle. A professor at our university, Steve Anton PhD, is a recognized authority on this and also a good friend of mine. I eat moderate carb, but with my high level of exercise I also am very adapted to burning fat. Steve says I have a flexible metabolism, and maintain a low level of body fat. Best! PS: I think the body will use up the available glycogen in 12 hours of fasting or sooner with a high activity level and move to a ketogenic state.
the marathon runners of kenya have a 80/10/10 diet, which is 80 percent carbs. They drink ALOT of refined sugars because they burn it off so fast. Your diet depends alot on your activity. Carbs and healthy fat (omega 3) are very important for training. Everyone is always about the protein, but eat what you need for your activity is my best advice. (ie. body bulding needs more protein, running needs more carbs, martial arts needs a balance of all 3)
Man, I've whachteds many videos on dieting from professionals and every day people by far this one video has the best explanation of how the body gets fat from to much fuel. Thank for sharing your experience.

I normally don't take salt unless I really need it towards the end. My immune system gets very weak.
My friend did more than 30 days fasting (drinking only water). He didn't die :). He said the last few days became unhealthy and the first few days were tough but otherwise he said he felt fine. He was overweight became normal. There's an Amazon video called the science of fasting which is nice. Also Dr. Daniel (David?) Fung has RUclips videos about it. I tried it twice intending multiple days but I lost my nerve. I've fasted during daylight (no food no water) and I've fasted for 24 hours water only on two occasions, but not more than 24 hours. I'm on the Gracie diet which I modified twice, once to remove raw foods and again to integrate another doctors advice and avoid some other foods. I read a book by a doctor which said eaten fats are converted to body fat quickly.
Thanks for video. (KIS) Lets keeps IT SIMPLE. no meat, no sugar, no dairy, no processed food. Water, make your own juice. Light breakfast or no break fast. More vegetables, spices and herbs.

Good stuff on this video. I'm 48 and I noticed my metabolism has slowed down over the last year thus having to reduce my caloric intake. This fasting advice might be the extra little routine I need to add to my diet. I'll first start with a 12 hour
I was about your age when things started to change in the way I described in the video with the bloodwork. The fasting is really the only change I’ve made from that time that actually worked.
If you're considering fasting then check out Loren Lockman's videos on this topic first - fasting is very easy when done right, and very difficult when doing just a small thing wrong. For example - if you consume anything else than water then you are not fasting because anything else than water activates the digestive system which takes away most of the benefits of the fast.
Man That's crazy fasting, This is the first time someone explained it like that, WOW I finally understand it a lot better. I am usually drinking a lot of water some chocolate milk with half a bottle of Starbucks mocha fav, with a big squirt of Hershey's every four to five day's, No regular coffee tho. I've been out of the gym for a lot of years gain a ton of weight, little chocolate candy's don't help lol But I was at 315 at one point went down to 271 while doing heavy squats 5x5. Then Covid hit back to 300 I'm going to try fasting for the rest of 2021 off an on. And see if I can get my weight back down. Maybe a little push up and bodyweight squats, ab exercises too. Great video Excellent explanation of the Fasting process. I couldn't imagine going three days fasting man I'd be looking at people like they're food. LOL Peace!
I don’t even do jiu jutsu but I watch this channel regularly. Before a fast eat a decent bowl of oatmeal and drink a protein shake with mixed berries, cinnamon, flax seed,Maca powder and a milk of your choice. Guarantee you’ll be full for the day or two. I learned this from fasting because of religion. Stay hydrated and you’ll be good
Those of you that think adding salt to your water is going to make it taste bad, it won't. I thought it would when I first heard it, didn't do it for a few weeks, then got on board. I do it all the time now, you can barely tell a difference and I actually prefer it.
When fasting multiple days, you’re losing all your body’s mineral stores, but not replenishing them, since we get our vitamins and minerals from our food. Putting sea salt in your water helps to replenish some of them during your fast.
It was... already ready to crack. Two weeks cheering for the guys in the Dojo doesn’t bother me too much either... I can still practice technique but... I totally can’t roll. Which is fine I suppose., I’m such a pretzel anyways. 😂
get better. when bodyparts break, it's often the body telling us to 1) ease UP some (too much stress of late), or 2) ease IN your the pressure/torque in your training regimen. i've seen a LOT of rib injuries. if you limit the "twist" in your body mechanics, you'll eliminate most of the environments in which they can occur.
I am a white belt one stripe at the Gracie Academy in Peachtree City, Georgia. I am also a preacher and believe in fasting. My question is are you eating smaller portions of whatever you want after you break the fast or what meats and sweets are ok to eat? I must admit I do have a sweet tooth. But things have to change. I gained about 20 lbs and take. Mild blood pressure pill. Thanks
One little thing: while it is true that your body can produce glucose, that doesn't mean you don't need to take in any sugar / carbs at all. The production of glucose creates side products, which at certain concentrations can poison your body. For example: in extreme cases of ketogenic dieting, ketosis can lead to ketoacidosis, which is a life-threatening condition. So, while most people nowadays consume too much sugar and could do with less, keeping your diet *balanced* is ultimately the key to being healthy.
I usually have my first meal or lunch at 1 pm but before that I have about 2 cups of coffee and some water from 8am-1 pm. Does that count as breaking the fast? I use no sugar and very lil amount of milk to lighten up the coffee.
Water, coffee. Try heavy whipping cream HWC in your coffee. It technically breaks a fast but there's so little sugar you shouldn't get an isulin response. Plus it tastes great.
@kama have you ever done the 5 day fast ?ive heard its great i do interment fasting and 2-3 day but never the 5 day apparently after day 3 ketone production is in full drive so your not hungry anymore but ive never made it wondering if you have and your opinon
Ive gone 4.5 days. It's pretty, remarkable the feeling if euphoria after a couple days. Be careful at day 2 or 3. It's very common to get some "intestinal distress"... Never trust a fasting fart....if you know what I mean.
i don't have my own kids fast, although if they miss a meal here or there because of time constraints, i don't sweat it, and just make sure they eat more when they do have time to eat.
Thanks for sharing, I didn't expect fasting could reduce diabete. You advise to not take glucose, is it not contradictory with making smoothies like Gracie do (and you do or did) ? because fruits can contains a lot of sugar (fructose usually).
Diabetics should probably not consume too many smoothies. But the GRACIE family doesn’t seem to have a history of diabetes caused by the gracie diet. So I don’t know what to tell you there.
@@KamaJiuJitsu yes I don't know either. I will think about that when I drink a beer tonight (like you say no sugar, no coke ;-) ) btw drinking a beer sometimes and practising bjj seems compatible for me, your opinion about that is welcome.
Great explanation on fasting, Ryan. Love your videos. Just want to submit a few things. Fasting is great for many many issues but a long term state of ketosis i.e. 5 days should be monitored by health professionals. This is because ketosis is not the body's natural state, and has long term consequences not often discussed. The body's primary source of fuel is glycogen, and to run in ketosis (running on fat) is to run in an emergency metabolic state. Also, since glycogen is the body's primary source of fuel, the body should always have glycogen when not fasting (keep the fridge and only the fridge full at all times). This also goes with the following correction. Diabetes isn't caused by sugar, it's caused by intramyo cellular lipids (fat in your cells). It's just that the sugar allows for the build up of the fat you intake. This is why fruit is actually good and fat is bad. Hence the Gracie's not being particularly diabetic. I'm guessing your fasting helped with your lack of being prediabetic. Hope this helps!
Who says glycogen is the primary fuel source? If you eat a ton of carbs, sure, but that doesn't mean it is the "natural" or "normal" state. Your body can make unlimited amounts of glycogen, it is a myth that if you fast or don't pound carbs you won't have glycogen. There are plenty of long distance athletes that run over 100 miles on a high fat low carb diet and they have all the glycogen they need. I would say that overflowing glycogen reserves and fatty liver are the emergency state, not the normal state. By the way, type 2 diabetes is insulin resistance. You get insulin resistance from having too much insulin flowing through your veins. You get too much insulin by eating too much sugar, so yes, diabetes is caused by sugar. Fat is a necessary nutrient, sugar is not, fruit is not.
Bob Wilson Came in to say the same thing. You beat me to it. Glycogen is only the the primary source of fuel in people that eat way to many carbs. Their body has a diminished ability to burn fat. As to the other posters contention that being in ketosis for extended periods is bad, there is no proof of that whatsoever. There are tons of people that have been on very low carb diets for years or even decades with no apparent ill effects. They have high energy, low body fat, don’t have diabetes and have amazing calcium scores for their heart. Speaking for myself, I took up BJJ in my mid twenties. I trained six days a week and ate whatever I wanted. Lots of carbs. I got all the way down to 148 pounds, but I was still carrying fat around my gut. Still no abs. Fast forward 20 years and I was nearing 50 years old. I had ballooned up to 215 pounds. I went on a low carb KETO diet that included fasts of 16-20 hours. In six months, I lost 50 pounds, gained muscle, got stronger and didn’t have energy lows like I used to. Calcium score of zero. Got off heartburn meds. Sinuses cleared up. Skin rashes gone. Abs are showing through for the first time in my life. All by eating a diet high in animal fat and protein. I don’t care what kind of shady “research” the high carb proponents come out with; no one will ever convince me to go back to a high carb diet.
I'm newly diabetic type 2. Tying to beat my diabetes through diet and intermitten fasting. According to Dr. Jason Fung diabetes is not caused by sugar/glucose but caused by insulin. Insulin is the problem. Type 2 diabetics are producing Insulin but their Insulin are no longer processing glucose well. Too much Insulin causes weight gain.
Did Carlos really loose to rufino dos Santos then go assault (three Gracias carlos, hilio ,george) rufino with pipes then go to prison for a couple yrs. Also a few other practitiors that beat them?????
Good video, but Angus Barbieri died age 51, not 94. Fasting for 382 days in a row might not be the jitsu to get to 90 years old, although intermittent fasting might help you there.
You’re right. He died in 1990. That’s the “90” I remembered… thought it was his age. Nope, it was the year he died. But he did live well for 20+ years after doing the fast. Had he not done it, he would likely have died decades earlier than he did.
... no ones going to address the cream cheese and pears meal? Did he eat the cheese off the block or spoon it? Either way sounds horrible to pair with a pear.
You're not a tall guy, from what you've said before you are short. The reason I say this is because the skinfold calipers don't take height into account. Therefore you have much less bf% than 18%

Before a fast eat a decent bowl of oatmeal and drink a protein shake with mixed berries, cinnamon, flax seed,Maca powder and a milk of your choice. Guarantee you’ll be full for the day or two. I learned this from fasting because of religion. Stay hydrated and you’ll be good
You can put your oatmeal flakes in the protein shake and mix it with the berries, cinnamon, flax seed and put some peanut butter, turn on the blender.
Correction: Ketones are a byproduct of the body burning fat for energy
That part still confuses me
Kama Jiu-Jitsu great video overall though
Those of you that think adding salt to your water is going to make it taste bad, it won't. I thought it would when I first heard it, didn't do it for a few weeks, then got on board. I do it all the time now, you can barely tell a difference and I actually prefer it.
What is the purpose of adding salt to water.
When fasting multiple days, you’re losing all your body’s mineral stores, but not replenishing them, since we get our vitamins and minerals from our food. Putting sea salt in your water helps to replenish some of them during your fast.
@@KamaJiuJitsu thanks Professor.
Fasted for a week, Cracked my rib cage during a roll.
😑 2 weeks on the bench drilling shrimp.
Thaaanks!
i think your rib was already ready to crack. better than dislocating it (been there).
It was... already ready to crack.
Are you working out while on a two day fast?
I am.
Thanks
Same portions, but no carbs is best for cutting body fat, it seems.
Wow man. Fasting+BJJ=Life!
How does the fasting affect your energy levels on the days you train and fast?
I seemed to do OK. I don’t feel that much of a difference.
you wouldn't think it would help but you'll have more energy for training
One little thing: while it is true that your body can produce glucose, that doesn't mean you don't need to take in any sugar / carbs at all. The production of glucose creates side products, which at certain concentrations can poison your body. For example: in extreme cases of ketogenic dieting, ketosis can lead to ketoacidosis, which is a life-threatening condition. So, while most people nowadays consume too much sugar and could do with less, keeping your diet *balanced* is ultimately the key to being healthy.
Kron smokes that brocolli!
fasting is great
I usually have my first meal or lunch at 1 pm but before that I have about 2 cups of coffee and some water from 8am-1 pm. Does that count as breaking the fast? I use no sugar and very lil amount of milk to lighten up the coffee.
You pretty much do what I do, except I don’t put any milk in my coffee. How has that been working for you? How long have you been doing it?
@@KamaJiuJitsu after I started bjj I lost 10 solid pounds I'm about a year. Next step is to reduce beer and I think it should click into place.
It will.
We do it every ramadan try it next ramadan
2 April 2022 next ramadan
When you do a multi-day fast, how much liquids do you drink a day? Hot or cold? Thanks.
Me myself, I just drink a lot of water and black coffee.
Never trust a fasting fart....if you know what I mean.
does this fasting change for young adults
(or older kids)
i don't have my own kids fast, although if they miss a meal here or there because of time constraints, i don't sweat it, and just make sure they eat more when they do have time to eat.
I will think about that when I drink a beer tonight (like you say no sugar, no coke ;-) )
btw drinking a beer sometimes and practising bjj seems compatible for me, your opinion about that is welcome.
Thank you for that! ~ Ryan

Yes. There's even evidence of it.
And their kryptonite was always Catch Wrestling
It’s actually REALLY good.
I thought it was weird at first.
I usually fast all day and don't eat until after my bjj class at night
Me too. Sometimes im so beat I just shower and sleep resulting in a 36-40 HR fast. Look up Autophagy. That's where the magic happens.
Does it have to be sea salt, or is himalayan salt work the same? Thanks! Great video and channel.
In my fast this week, I’m using Himalayan salt. Ran out of sea salt the last time I fasted. Just don’t use that Morton’s crap.
sugar is the fuel for high intensity. End of
Good stuff but viewers not familiar may want to be careful ingesting caffeine on a fast.
You're not a tall guy, from what you've said before you are short. The reason I say this is because the skinfold calipers don't take height into account. Therefore you have much less bf% than 18%
Like I was saying, I’m not so worried about the percentage. I’m only worried about the sum of the measurements and if that sum declines.
good at JJ
