Anyone here struggling with this - *there's HOPE. I am free of this after a basically life threatening issue with histamine.* I had a *severe asthma* attack (almost worthy of the hospital) every time I ate ANYTHING (not just high histamine food) when my issue was at its worst because your body makes histamine to start the stomach acid flow and I was THAT sensitive. So, needless to say, I learned to fast. And, I attribute fasting (prolonged 3-5 days and IF) and eating low histamine food to my healing. It took about 6 months to get so my asthma essentially went away and another 6 to really get on solid ground. Now, I can eat what I want as far as histamines go, but I'm mindful not to let the bucket get too full since I think I probably have issues producing DAO.

I grew up in the environment where we used fermented foods daily all year around (Ukraine). Straggled almost all of my adult life with bad congestion. Two to four weeks recommendations/restrictions on those foods to restore your body/gut balance:
    1. Remove all alcohol from your diet
    2. Eat freshly made meals (freeze the leftovers) as the histamine increases with time.
    3. Minimum adjectives (like sulfates etc) in the food as it could spike the histamine level.
    4. Aged cheese and fermented foods.
    5. Canned and smoked foods
    6. Soy sauce, vinegar (again, any fermented foods)
    7. Avocados, spinach, citrus foods - as it may triggered the histamine spike.
    Root causes:
    - stress
    - mold

I developed histamine intolerance years ago while I was vegan. I got so bad that near the end of my vegan diet I couldn’t eat anything without throwing up most of what I just ate. I developed all the symptoms of histamine intolerance… I was a freaking mess. I couldn’t figure it out, nor did the doctors. Years after I cut most of the plants out of my diet I had a horrible flare and broke down and just wanted answers. RUclips apparently heard my plea and recommended a video on it and a freaking miracle happened. I knew I had gut issues and went into gut healing process. All the fermented foods were introduced week by week, and that freaking caused my body to freak out. So it’s been two years I’ve known about this issue and I’m still trying to figure out my diet. I’ve talked to doctors and they just dismiss it. I live with horrible itching and throw up often. Though it’s better, it’s still not gone. Almost every food that has histamine or histamine promoting compounds, I have been excluded from eating. I’ve seen two gastroenterologist and all they did was scope my tummy, and told me to take an antacid. So if anyone has any suggestions on a doc to see in Missouri please let me know.

All I can eat right now for gut healing is homemade chicken broth by boiling 4 piece chicken thighs with bone ins and skin that was previously frozen. I thaw it right away then cook it right away with a pot full of water to make the broth. I have to remove skins before I freeze them because I'm getting nauseous with too much fat. Then I freeze it all separately. I add low histamine low FODMAP veggies: lacinto kale, rutabaga, arugula, chard, cabbage, broccoli, sea salt. I can tolerate that. When it's time to eat, I pull out a piece of frozen chicken, cook the veggies in broth diluted with water to taste, and add in the frozen chicken piece. Add Himalayan salt. For lunch I eat frozen turkey patty cooked on stove top in ghee. I can tolerate green plantains and sweet potatoes. I cook them on stove top with ghee. I can tolerate steak frozen and immediately thawed and cooked. Look for recipes on cooking plantains: tostones. I am going to start taking a DAO supplement and am working with a functional medicine doctor who ran tests on me. I can eat cassava chips and taro chips with oil made from palm oil. I eat plantain chips. I take digestive enzymes from designs for health. Try dao from "designs for health" or "seeking health."

Intro, aight, but there are some with HIT, as well as glutamate and salicylate intolerance, that's lifelong from Hypermobility Spectrum Disorder / Ehlers Danlos Syndrome (hypermobile). Not all people get HIT from that but a sizeable portion of those showing up with HIT have underlying HSD/EDS. It also comes with MCAS. Some may view it as temporary but if you're talking about relief from symptoms, it's not "curing", it's reduction of load and reloading while avoiding unnecessary high-h foods like olives and citrus. DAO can help, timing your anti-histamines too, reducing overall MCA load (environment; mould, dust, pollen) too. Overall POTS treatment helps: building leg and ab musculature, compression leggings, legs up when possible etc. Healthy weight. Low stress. Soluble fibre. Midodrine, ivabradine, etc. (POTS only!). Vit D, C, and Omega 3. B12 if deficient. Source: I have all mentioned conditions and have been seeing the best (dietitian) spec in these in Oceania imo.
B1 B5 B6, copper-zinc balance, maybe Selenium & iron, etc. are used in the body's creation of DAO iirc.
Looking at things like HIT etc. as emerging for each individual isn't always best; things like it are often lifelong, or long-term (complex cause), or pre-disposition event caused (similar to Long Covid maybe). They're sometimes new for a person, but not often imo--instead gradual change across a lifetime that makes it significant if the spot-able symptoms haven't been life-long.
The best test to do is: citrus, pineapple, olives, tomato, ripe stone-fruit for oral allergy symptomology. Separated by a day or two for each test. Sickness from cocoa, coconut, strawberry or really any high-h foods, but prior ones have lots of mouth sympt
Skin symp isn't always prevalent in all (myself eg). They also tend to emphasise POTS symptomology maybe through vaso-dilation.
SIBO is also common in EDS + POTS.
Please don't do olive oil nor turmeric.

I have histamine intolerance that almost killed me three times before the immunologist figured it out. It started being deadly when menopause started. I honestly believe there is a connection but unfortunately where I live none of the doctors do not know what to do other than prescribe pills. I had to take over being my own doctor, not knowing what the hell I am doing, getting information from mainly mayo clinics. Too much misinformation on the internet. I am on Zyrtec and Benadryl, and a low histamine diet because the steroids caused my health and weight to spiral out of control. Now I have a low thyroid issue and the medication put me in ER. It feels like I am slowly dying.

Benadryl makes me gain weight. So no more anti-histamines.

I take a DAO enzyme from Amazon, and beef kidney capsules from Ancestral Supplements. Those two will help break down histamine in the gut. Quercitin and vitamin c help clear it from the body. Take a good digestive enzyme to help with digestion/gut acidity. Benadryl blocks histamine, but also impairs the body’s ability to make its own DAO-so you’re hurting yourself by taking it. Estrogen dominance drives histamine intolerance, as does mold and candids. Hope this helps.

I disagree with some of the approaches of functional medicine doctors, but only such common sense approaches will work. If you have evidence of high histamine (fatigue, stuff nose of a morning, dry skin) take charge and play around with whatever approach works for you. I don't believe (from experience) all the testing or addressing hormones is necessary. The key is if you support your body, it'll do much of it for you.
