  • Back in 2017, Horizon: Zero Dawn launched on PlayStation 4, and it didn't resemble anything Sony-owned studio Guerilla had ever made before. Best known for its dark FPS series Killzone, Guerilla instead delivered an airy open world action-RPG, one rife with tribalistic societies and mysterious robotic creatures, and it went on to sell a staggering 20 million copies. Fast-forward some five years, and its sequel has arrived. While it initially began development as a PS4-only game, it's also natively available on PlayStation 5 (where we played it), and -- for the two of us on today's episode of + -- it blew us away. Gameplay and combat, story and voice acting, main quests and side quests, upgrades and options. It's a wonderful adventure, and one of the best PlayStation exclusive games of all-time. So come join us for a deep, spoiler-filled discussion about all things Horizon: Forbidden West, noting that the first 15 minutes or so are spoiler-free.

I kinda disagree about Varl. Where as for me him leaving doesn't impact me at all but he never came across as annoying to me, he came across as a true homie - him and Erend literally the two who always had your back.
What I loved was Varl was the one who was picking up on information, learning new concepts and understanding the old ones much much better than everyone else (minus Alva).

I'm glad we didn't see Faro. Not seeing him accomplishes two things. One being that it leaves his mutation to our imagination. And second and most importantly is he's a loser. By not seeing him, his extended life feels trivial and worthless and that's exactly what he deserves. For him to be disposed of by a naive tribe that worshipped him is insult to injury. Ultimately Ted Faro is not worthy of crossing paths with Aloy because she has bigger fish to fry.

You got a pretty good overview of what he was in the hologram Aloy saw, that was enough for me - we was like a massive plant grown cramped in a small jar, so it would have really been hard to get what had happened to him from going around that corner I think. I was happy enough with the hologram view.

I just have to disagree on the idea that Frozen Wilds didn't have much story and didn't impact Forbidden West. This DLC was the thing that developed the character of Hephaestus, the subfunction that plays a very key role in the sequel. I can't imagine having not played it and being able to grasp the sequel quite as well.

Agree with the mystery lacking. Wish it was told more like HZD. They could of changed the way they told the Far Zenith story and given it more of a mystery revealing itself via exploring, holograms and audio logs like HZD. Revealing the fact they didn’t die, that something was approaching earth, finding out it’s them, that they figured out eternal life, and that there’s a greater enemy out there (which they also didn’t have to completely reveal to keep it mysterious). Instead it was very straight forward.
With all that said, I really enjoyed the game and this world. No game ever made me platinum it until this one. Just wish the story was told a bit more like the 1st one. 9/10. Thank you GG. Looking forward to the next one.

I find it interesting how Colin says no one could have predicted what the game is about meanwhile in the back of my bad I always had a “what if the ship didn’t blow up” thoughts of what could happen if that were the case
Also the fact that at the beginning of forbidden west they tell us about far zenith again was a huge hint for me, the rules of foreshadowing and setting something up only to pay it off later
Still awesome that they actually did it!

Same. As soon as we went through the first ruins with Varl and saw the holo's, I absolutely knew they didn't explode. I actually thought it was obvious.

Incredible game and I wholeheartedly agree with Colin, the Far Zenith stuff was absolutely awesome and now that the odyssey is on Earth, they have a lot of different angles to work with in the 3rd game. Imagine a trilogy of games that begins with primitive tribes with spears and bows that ends with space travel. So much they could do.

1:19:00 - It might be more of a critique on the game's Normal mode and it may even be true that it's unbalanced, but I never get it when complaints are made about a game being too easy or not forcing you to be creative with its systems, when the person don't try to bump up the difficulty. Overall I like game and I think the art direction and visual are top tier for these Horizon games. But I've come to the realization that the writing for Aloy's personality brings the story down. Outside of her orgin in HZD I don't find the character interesting or endearing. Also the writing and pacing for some of the key characters and plot points were off. Leaving the conclusions to story treads or deaths either leaving no impact or feeling underwhelming. I felt like the whole San Francisco part of the map was underutilized and could do with more story and npc quest. The whole Thebes and Farrow bit was lame and underwhelming. The Ragalia character was a miss and she felt like a Saturday morning cartoon villain. Alot of the tribe characters either looked to similar because of the heavy war paint and hair styles or they had similar sounding names, that they've become a blur in my mind with no one in particular sticking out. The early settlements like Chain scrape in the Daunt are detailed and seem full of life but those even takes a steep decline as soon as you leave The Daunt.
At the end of the day I enjoyed the game fir what it was but feel as though they tried to pack in to much. If Ragalia was written better her rebellion and Aloy uniting the tribe. Aloy having to find the other subs funtions of Gaia and stopping the blight should have been more than enough to substain HFW storywise. And in my opinion the could have saved the whole Zenith and Nemesis stuff for the 3rd game.

Fully agree with Colin and Ben on Aloy's characterization. I've seen so many complaints about Aloy as a character since release but so much of it always felt like people talking about who they wanted Aloy to be instead of accepting who she actually is; respecting where she comes from.
Given her upbringing, her experiences in life thus far, and now carrying what feels like the weight of the world on her shoulders all the time, the way she interacts with others seems realistic and human. She's empathetic towards others but she can get pretty fed up dealing with other people's shit all the time too, and she'll let them know.
This more grounded characterisation makes her feel more human and relatable and is what makes her a great character. It may not be what some people want, but like real people, you don't get to choose how people are, they are who they are because of where they come from and this game's portrayal of Aloy understands that.

I finally finished the story last night, and was able to watch the rest of your review - pretty good commentary. I really loved where the story went on this, all during the original Forbidden West I was sure that the ship in space had not really exploded, or somehow survived, but I was amazed to see how much of a factor that played in this game. However the burning question I had was not talked about or answered - did the Zenith that got taken away by the bat-machine survive somewhere else? One other point, after you were talking about the art I realized it existed at another level - it was part of Tilda's plan to begin turning Aloy into her Elizabeth she intended to spend eternity with. And speaking of that, one story aspect I would have liked to seen explored more was, how it would warp a mind to be alive that long. You sort of got a bit of that with Faro, but Tilda seemed remarkably normal for someone who had had a thousand years pining for someone. Edit: One other other thought, Machine Strike I didn't enjoy playing during the game, but if I had been able to play Machine Strike on my phone against the characters in game and won game items that way, I would have probably done that.

Man, it took me 105 hours to complete the story, and I I think my completion percentage was around 70% when I finished the story. It took me 118 hours to get the Platinum and my completion percentage is only around 84%. Colin at 75 hours and Ben at 72 hours to complete the story and have well over 65% completion sounds really fast.
Honestly about 3 or 4 of the things required to get the Platinum were tedious. I was not having fun at the end, with stuff like Machine Strike, or the races. I felt kind of 'meh' after getting the Plat, maybe I would have felt better if I had waited a week or so after finishing the story instead of just rushing through the rest of the trophies. It really felt like an open world Assassin's Creed at the end with just too many Rebel Camps that felt like rinse and repeat. I liked most of the side-quests, but I think Guerilla tried to put too much into this game. I agree with Colin, the trophy list was kind of lame.

I really enjoyed this game until the last couple of hours. It isn’t without its issues, however. Vertical traversal is pretty abysmal. And I ended up almost never using melee combat unless I was forced into it, since it always felt so underpowered compared to ranged combat. But the vertical traversal is just broken. Regularly I had to move down a handhold and back up the same handhold to get Aloy to reach for the next handhold up. And there were often (VERY often) times when there was no logical reason I couldn’t move from one handhold to the next. The underwater stuff, while beautiful, really wasn’t all that necessary, either. Aside from those things (and the rare bug), I really enjoyed the game, though.

    • @galacticcurator8788
      @galacticcurator8788 2 года назад

I thought the vertical climbing stuff was in some ways better this game than the first one, in that there were more different kinds of handholds so it looked and felt more natural. But I agree it had real troubles with actually getting off at the top of things, I would have to shift around to some magic spot where it would let me up, should have been a lot more forgiving or had a button to press that would say "let go of all handholds and just go up no matter what you think". Sometimes mid-climb I did have issues with moving between handholds, but that wasn't frequent for me.

I also thought that he ans Aloy had a connection and aftre it turned out he's romantically involved with Zo it kinda seemed like Aloy was a bit sad about if as if he thought she missed her shot with him. I think Tilda wanted something to happen between her and Elisabet. If you completed the conversation with Tilda at her home it sounds like Elisabet and Tilda never had any relationship only that Tilda wanted more than Elisabet. She remarked that Elisabet saw Tilda as a mother figure. Nothing about a stronger deeper romantic relationship is really hinted at being reciprocated by Elisabet toward Tilda but it is made very clear that Tilda wanted Elisabet and Aloy, but not Beta.

    • @rusty4265
      @rusty4265 2 года назад

Yea I felt like their relationship was more about Tilda's desire than mutual interest between both of them. I guess you could read their weekly 'meet-ups' as some kind of sexual relationship, but I think it's open to interpretation (intentionally?). Simply put, it was clear that Elisabet's interest in Tilda was fleeting at best and that Elisabet didn't really want a relationship with her.
I think this game muddies the waters on Elisabet's sexuality instead of clarifying things. I hope Aloy stays 'single' in the next game. I think her character is simply better as an asexual (sort of) person.

I did speak to Tilda going through all dialog. She didn't say they were a couple or hint that Elisabet and Tilda were romantically engaged. Tilda stated she wanted more fron Elisabet and the more she wanted the more distant Elisabet became. Doesn't sound like a relationship Elisabet wanted even from the perspective of Tilda's own retelling of their acquaintance-ship, friendship or possible deeper romantic entanglement. It really sounds like the former two options rather than the latter. As Colin stated why would the developers push for Elisabet to be homosexual only to make both of her clones straight if homosexuality is innate, immutable and rooted in genetics despite no evidence for such a deep bond to homosexuality and genetics even with evidence to the contrary existing in the real world? The developers probably learned of the research into such topics, but also perhaps wanted to tread lightly not to upset anyone in the L••• community (sometimes I actually cannot use the acronym without consequence on YT due to heavy-handed censorship, I wish that was a joke).

Aloy was an interesting character in zero dawn beacuse everything she learned about the world and her self, we learned at the same time. + We could choose her reactions and give her the personality we wanted her to have. In forbidden west all that was gone. Talking to most characters gave you no more interesting info about the scifi story. It became so anoying that i just skiped everything characters had to say exept gaia and sylen. I wish they build this game without a campaign. It would be sick to freeroam and find clues to what has happened and learn more about everything. I tried to play it like this by removing the hud and didnt look at the map. I well and truly loved this game. My favourite PS5 game and one of my favourite games of all time. I had a mostly smooth, visually stunning experience on PS5. The comparisons to Elden Ring are unfair, because besides being an open world it's not even the same type of game.
I was blown away by the story and dialogue quality; I truly wasn't expecting this direction at all. It's one of the few open world game designs that I couldn't believe I was seeing. Last time I felt that was with Division 2 (which I first played on Xbox One X in 4K), another game with a visually incredible open world. So much of Forbidden West is charming; from the Vegas story to the introduction of the Quen, the latter of which really 'opened' up the world even more.
I mentioned before that I had issues with Aloy herself in the beginning, and I maintain that. I nearly hated the game as a result, and as Ben mentioned; the Bulwark section was so absurd. But with time, Aloy matured as her companion group grew. Honestly, by the final mission they were trading quips in an almost Uncharted style, which I adored.
Finally, I thought the gameplay was fantastic. Some of the robot fights are seriously challenging, especially the Slaughterspine. The melee combat felt good, so I highly spec'd that tree, as well as the Ranged combat. I'm SO excited for what's coming in the next game.

I find it funny, hypocritical, just stupid that Colin, a guy who has said he's fed the F up with open world games PRAISE this bland 2012 feeling game.
I mean seriously, it feels more like DLC for the first game than a new game.
It looks good, it plays better, but it's like just patching the first game.
The NPC interactions are just as bad. They talk for half an hour and the options are just talk more.
Talking options don't affect anything I can tell, it's just get more context in the most bloated way possible. Like if I asked "where is the door" an NPC in this game would tell me a long winded story about how the door was made, who made it, what decisions lead to the door being made, who selected the design of the door, but didn't tell me "down the hall on the right."
The game also does things that are un-intuitive. Like climbing, it's limited, wonky, and even with the yellow guides on doesn't work like it should.
It's like they spent more time on making NPCs and animation that making a new fresh game that felt like a sequel.
I didn't like it, and again, everything Colin bitches about in openworld games is present and at times doubled down on in this game.
Side quests, Colin bitches to no end about too many side quests, this game has too Fucking meaningless side quests that serve no purpose.
Person missing, find person, get thanked, resources added.
    WTF
The praise for this game feels biased and unjustified.
