It's a great method. I've done this many times as well. When I do this, I figured go heavy over the grout lines and make sure there's plenty of excess sealer on tiles around the grout lines; basically over apply the sealer to grout lines so that there's plenty on the tiles. And then use microfiber towels and wipe the excess evenly over the tiles so that they're consistently wet. And then make sure you have plenty of dry towels like a 10-pack and so long as u wipe the tiles dry, there won't be a haze on the tiles. If u do this, u will have sealed your tiles along with you're grout. A must for marble and other porous tiles. Thanks for the awesome quick video.
To clarify: 10-pack of microfiber towels ("12x12" approx) is plenty for any regular size bathroom floor.
Thank you for this video! Had a cleaning guy quote me almost $900 to clean and seal less than 600 sq feet of tile. I would have let him go ahead and do it but he wasn’t willing to assure me he was going to protect my newly painted kitchen cabinets nor carpet. I watched this video and others and over 2 days (taking breaks etc…) I did it myself without any damage to my cabinets or carpet. Total cost about $150 bc I put 2 good coats on the entire floor and the water beads up as promised when I spill water on the tile. No absorption into the grout and gives me time to wipe it up! (FYI- Zep Grout cleaner is amazing!!)
That's awesome to hear and glad it helped, thanks for watching!
I agree, very important step with grout. Thank you MMM. Your floor looks great by the way!
Thank you the floors do look nice!
Very good information on how to do this and why you need to do this .The floor looks real nice.
Yes I didn't want that dark looking grout line a few years from now after use. Thanks for watching Rita!
Thank you so much, an Easy video and helpful.
Nice Job! Quick to the point video. Thanks
Glad it helped, thanks for watching!
Straight to the point 👍
Awesome to the point, easy to understand video!!
Another very informative video even for a short one.
Thanks Larry!
Good video. Now I can seal the grout that I have been putting off for months
Glad it helped!
Thank you, The Eclectric Handyman! This is an awesome video! (:
Glad it helped, thanks for watching!
Moved into a 5 yr old house & just scrubbed the grout on the floors that are Exactly like Your example. So this video really helps 👍🏽🙏🏽
Glad it helped!
1 year later. Hows it been holding up?
Been there done that and for sure a step not to be skipped 🐾🐾🦊🐺
Yeah for sure and I think it's overlooked by those having floors installed. Thanks for watching!
Great tip.
Very helpful. Thank you.
Glad it was helpful!
Very helpful. Thanks.
Glad it was helpful!
Easy job, thanks
Thanks a lot guy
It was really very successful I tried it for my family and living room and it was really awesome 👌
Glad it helped, thanks for watching!
Great video. Sealing your grout is always a good idea and something anyone can do. Great investment!
Thanks for the video! A general contractor just quoted me over $1000 to seal the (new and in good condition) grout in my shower. When I saw the number I was like "there has got to be a cheaper way..."
Glad it helped and you were able to save money! Thanks for watching!
Absolutely nobody mentioned to me that tile grout needed to be sealed.
Now here I am 3 months later cleaning/sealing an entire ground floor worth 🙈🐾
Thanks for posting. I am re-grouting a bathroom and will use this to seal the new grout.
Thank you so much for posting this video! Much appreciated and so helpful! 👍🏼🙏🏼
Glad it helped, thanks for watching!
Thank you very much for sharing
Hope it helped, thanks for watching!
An easy to do task. I put down two coats, let dry between, and then went over the entire tile floor with a tile sealer. Well worth the 30-45 minutes of your time and money, especially in a bathroom that will see water all the time.
So wipe off the grout sealer from the grout. Got it!
Thanks a ton!!!
Exactly the video I was searching for…just had new tile floors installed in my rental property and I was wondering how I could protect the nice and new grout lines.
"wipe the access off" lol
Undoubtedly a lifelong head turner for him
Accidentally forgot this step - If you don't wipe off the "access," I found out that the "access" sealer opens up a portal to another dimension 😮 DIY sealers beware!
Maybe just an accent 😂 sounds like the Canadian way of saying it.. he did a great job 👍
Come on. Practically every person makes common English errors.
Auto correct is responsible for a lot today if people don’t cheque…..I mean check🙂
Wow 🤩
You also can have the tile layers use a product that mixes with the grout instead of water so the grout is sealed throughout and done.
I wish I’ve known this long time ago.
Can you please advise how long do we wait to use a sealer after grout application?
Cleaning is primary before sealing. If you see any film on the tile it must be removed. If you don't the, seler will efectivly seal that film in place
Short video straight to the point. Thanks !
Just one question. Does the grout stay dark or does it dries to "dry grout colour" ?
The sealer goes on wet looking, but dries transparent.
I plan on doing this in my living room and hallways so it's a larger area. Is there an item I can use instead of that small foam brush to make the process a little quicker ?
They make the grout sealer in a spray bottle by another company for quicker application. You would still need to wipe the excess, but it should be much faster than having to brush it on large areas. Thanks for watching!
liqiud form flooding bathroom floor till dried up is can be?
Do you need to clean off the sealer from the porcelain before letting it dry?
As I demonstrate in the video after brushing on the sealer, I use an old t-shirt to wipe off the excess and the remainder dries normally. Thanks for watching!
Looks easy! Does it have fume? How often do you have to seal grout on the title floor?
Yes it was very simple and I don't recall any super strong smells. I try and do 1x per year to keep the grout sealed. Thabks for watching! 🛠️
Great video.....just a couple of questions. We just had our kitchen tile grout scraped out and replaced. 1. Do I seal the grout before I dehaze the tiles or dehaze first? 2. How long after dehazing the tiles do I need to wait before sealing the grout? Also, how many coats did you put on? Thank you for this video. I used this same sealer for my granite. I have 1/2 a bottle left and I'm hoping I can seal my 10x12 kitchen without having to purchase more! It's not cheap for sure!
Hello - I did not dehaze the tiles, so I couldn't offer suggestions on timing of that vs. grout sealing. As to how many coats, I only did 1 coat. I was told by a professional tiler to seal the grout 2x the 1st year, and then annually after that. Thanks for watching!
@@TheEclecticHandyman Thank you!
Can you recommend little bit reasonable but the good grout seal?
Hello - there are cheaper varieties of grout seal at Home Depot and Lowe's, but I have not used any of them and can't speak to how good they are. I do think this brand I used worked well as it's been 1 month and the grout still looks great.
Thanks! Great video.
Do I need to apply two coats?
Also, do I wait 3 days until I take a shower for it to cure?
So the area I did was not exposed to water like a shower, so applying a couple of coats might be a good idea. You can always re-apply at any time following the manufactures directions. Thanks for watching!
The package will say. Usually 2-4 hrs dry time, then add water to surface and see if it beads up. If not, do another application and test again in a few hrs. Good luck.
When you wipe the excess off do you wipe the excess of the grout line too? I have read some reviews and some people have hazing on the grout lines and I was wondering if they were supposed to wipe off the excess from the gout joint too.
I just used an old cotton t-shirt and wiped off all excess on both the grout and tile. I wouldn't concentrate wiping too hard on the grout but just a simple wipe. The grout is porous so as soon as you put on the sealer it will get inside of it. Thanks for watching!
Great video! Should I mop new tile before doing this?
Yes I would clean it prior just for the fact you'll be crawling around on the floor and if it's nasty it will make the job harder. Also you'll want that grout as clean prior to sealing. Glad it helped and thanks for watching!
Do you recommend this to be used on shower walls?
Yes I would use it on my shower walls on the grout line if I had a tile shower.
So another question. My grout sealant came with a bottle with a roller attachment, which i used. i feel like it came out way to fast and i left it over the grout. Is this, ok? Will it still seal fine if it is thicker?
Yes the extra shouldn't cause issues, just wipe up the excess with a rag as I did. The biggest issue with using too much honestly is waste of liquid and the cost. Thanks for watching!
How long does it last and how often would you need to go over it again?
I've been told the 1st year apply it 4 times, and then after the 1st year apply it annually. Ultimately check the manufactures recommendations on application and re-application periods. Thanks for watching!
Can this be applied on an existing grout?
Yes and in fact it is a general recommendation to reseal grout annually, especially in high traffic areas. Thanks for watching!
What kind of grout do you use for floor tiles like porcelain vs shower tiles? unsanded or sanded?
Depends on if you have natural stone. If it’s porcelain or ceramic you’ll use sanded grout.
Sanded grout is for larger joints. Unsanded is for 1/8" or smaller joints.
How long do i wait after cleaning tile before i put the grout sealer?
I would just let the floor dry normally, and then seal the grout.
if i've been living in a new house for 2 months, can i still put the sealant on tile?
Hello yes and in fact sealing tile is a process I've been told by contractors to do annually to keep the grout protected and clean. Thanks for watching!
Dose this sealer have gloss in it. I’m looking for a sealer that is non glossed.
The sealer I used is meant for the grout, not necessarily the tile itself and it basically protects the porous nature of the grout line from dirt and grime. It had no gloss to it I could see.
Can I apply it on limestone floor also? I want to seal the grout and also my limestone floor, can I use it for it?
Thanks guys!
Find a stone sealer
👍
How long does it last to protect the grout from molds and water?
I was told by a professional tiler to protect the grout 2 times the 1st year after installation, and 1 time per year afterwards to protect the grout. Thanks for watching!
Did you or do you recommend applying more then 1 coat? Thanks! 😎
I only put on 1 coat. A person that does tiles told me to do it 3x the 1st year, and 1x per year after that. That was their recommendation to me. Thanks for watching!
@@TheEclecticHandyman thank you for the reply! 🙏🏾Yea we went with white grout and afterwards the builder said he thinks that will prove to be troublesome especially around the bathroom and kitchen areas so I was considering doing at least 2 coats initially in those areas. 🤔
Let’s to this today
Does this automatically seal the tile too by wiping it?
The tile itself if porcelain or ceramic doesn't usually need sealing just the grout because the tile isn't porous. There are some types of tile floor materials that are porous and do need sealed.
Do you need to seal the tile or just the grout?
I just did the grout as it's porous and collects dirt.
Will the prevent the grout getting dirty ?
Yes the grout sealer is to prevent water and dirt from getting absorbed. Just a reminder to keep the grout clean the grout will need reapplied at least annually. Thanks for watching!
How soon after laying the grout should you wait to apply the seal? My father in law helped me do a bathroom and said you wait 30 days after which i feel is too long because he jsujt wanted thejob done. He said this after we had set the toilet and vanity down so we would have had to move both to seal under them.
Also he didnt lay tile under the whole vanity jsut the back corner to "save tile" would you suggest this should have been done this way?
I waited 48 hours max for the grout to dry, and then did the sealant. I wanted to do it before traffic, water, dirt, was in the area of the floor. I did this in 2 different rooms and has been great.
@@TheEclecticHandyman awesome. thank you.
Most sealers will say 48 hrs. Every bottle has directions.
@@dthorne4602 When people who have done stuff a lot and say otherwise than what the directions say, what is wrong with getting more opinions?
@@Matt-np3wk I don't know what you mean. I tried to answer your question
How often do you seal the grout?
2x the 1st year, and annually after that is what the tiler of my house stated. Thanks for watching!
I've sealed my grout, now which products are safe to use to clean the floor that won't ruin the grout seal?
Warm water , washing up liquid, I’m a tiler 👍 vacuum floor 1st get dust up then mop
@@truthwillprevail5241
You said it dries clear did it make the grout look darker when it dried?
I like to use a gallon of water and a few drops of dish soap, nothing with any ingredients such as hand antibacterial, scents or hand protection. Just pain old Dawn or Sunlight. These adsarovee can leave streaks
I'm a painting contractor and this is the best way to clean walls, leaves no streaks. But make sure the rag is wet of you may leave buff marks.
How often is this required?
A floor guy told me 2x the 1st year, and then 1x per year after that
VOCs?
I'd recommend checking the manufacturer website for the specific product you're looking to use to get that information.
I heard something about resealing it every so often. Is this true. Is all that extra work necessary?
Yeah rule of thumb from tile folks I hear is 2x the 1st year, and annually after that. It breaks down from wear over time and will lose effectiveness. Reapplication is unfortunately necessary.
@@TheEclecticHandyman Thanks
where can buy this product?
I purchased mine from the Home Depot:
Sealer's Choice Gold 24 oz.
www.homedepot.com/p/Custom-Building-Products-Aqua-Mix-Sealer-s-Choice-Gold-24-oz-Penetrating-Sealer-AMSC24Z/202907686
So when dry it doesn't 'darken' the grout????
No it dried transparently for me and should not change the color. If you're concerned, test a small area in the corner 1st and see how it looks after a day or so.
So I had a professional group come and build a tile shower for us thinking that it would look better than had we tackled the project. Not so much. The sub contractor just destroyed the project. So the company I had contracted with nicely came and tried to fix the uneven tiles and poorly grouted areas. When they went to mix and apply the same grout (black) to the areas they worked on, it was obviously mixed differently. The first guy's grout came out kind of a dry, flat gray. The guy who fixed it all, must have mixed it correctly, as it looks black, as intended. Here's the question to the long-winded story.... if I were to seal the grout, would it potentially stabilize the two colors of grout? The grayish original stuff looks great when it's wet... black. But goes back to gray when it dries. I'm trying to come up with a way to get the two variations to both be a nice dark black. Any ideas?
Hello sorry to hear about the troubles with the floor. The grout sealer dries clear/transparent and does not add a wet look or impact the grout color. This is actually desired, because if it did modify the grout it would be hard to know the final color. While sealing the grout is needed to prevent future changes in grout color from dirt, etc. it's not intended to impact the original color. Hope this helps.
It's not about mixing the grout. There is always a variation between the batched of grout that were made at the factory and it's possible the installer used a different color or brand of grout. They always recommend that you mix multiple backs of grout together to get an even look if you are using more than one bag. The correct way tot do this would have been to remove the old grout and replace it all with the same batch.
@@MAGAMAN Correct. Its the same theory of "boxing paint" to make sure the color is consistent.
I had the same issue with my tile in the bathroom. The grout in some spots is grayish and other spots almost black. I decided to get a grout pen from Amazon dark grey and try that so it looks the same all over.
I try to do as much as I possibly can for exactly this reason . There are shocking tradesmen out there who will do quick jobs and not look at long term problems associated with a quick job . By the time any issues show they are long gone and they know it . I recently did a bathroom myself , totally gutted it and relined walls , put knew ceiling in , tiled a new floor , installed new toilet , vanity , shower , re plumbed hot and cold water , new ceiling extractor fan and painted etc . I saved literally thousands of dollars and in all honestly it came up better than a bathroom that was professionally done at my previous address . The only thing I got a professional for was anything electrical . Be careful who you hire because we live in a world where people want quick and easy money .
Why not seal the tile too?
There is no point in "sealing" ceramic/porcelain tile, it already is.
@@dthorne4602 Yeah, but wouldn't it be easier to use a sponge mop and do the whole floor in a few minutes?
@@B-ch6uk easier isn't better. The tile won't absorb anything, so you'll end up with an uneven film there. Better to focus on the absorbent part of the floor, which is a very small area
You mistook the process.
First you need to shake the tile grout sealer bottle.and put the tape between tile grout line for avoiding sealer out of line.
Yes shake it first. No do not tape, unnecessary and wasteful
That's a lot of echo from the tile floor. Nothing you can do about that. Good video.
Why not do the whole title...
My tile isn't porous as is with ceramic or porcelain tiles so no need to seal the tile itself. If you have a tile of type like granite or slate then you might want to seal it.
Seams wasteful. Most of the sealer ends up on a rag.
$45? F that.
You get what you pay for...
What is your time worth to you? Depending on size of your room/amount of tile, grout sealer will keep your grout lines clean so you don't spend hours on your hands and knees, scrubbing grout lines. That grout sealer goes a long way--will probably last for years if you store it correctly.
Yes, sealer prices are one of the all-time classic scams. They've gotcha.
It's $60 in some places. Can you imagine?
I hope you used a proper mask. I know thing with solvents and hardeners cause permanent brain damage
Who invented grout anyways? What a pain in the butt. It just attracts dirt, grease and dust.
