Why should you seal your grout? Cement grout is porous and will absorb any liquid that gets on it which could include soap scum, oils, juices, or just dirty water. Then it will stain, grow mold, and even start to stink. Nobody likes smelly grout. By sealing the grout you fill the pores of the grout so that other stuff can't get in and stain it. Basically, sealing your grout keeps it looking new for longer.
However, not all grout needs to be sealed. If you have epoxy grout, you should not seal it because it won't accept a sealer anyway. How can you tell if you have epoxy grout? Easy, does it look and/or feel like plastic? If so, then it is epoxy grout.
Next, I talk about how which sealers are best to use and why. Basically, any high-quality penetrating sealer with fluorochemicals is best. That way there are different sized particles that can fill in the gaps on the grout.
Finally, I'll share three ways to apply the grout sealer to the grout. I mention a method to apply a sealer to floor tile grout, shower tile, and even natural stone tile. Just make sure to clean your grout well before sealing, otherwise, you will seal in stains!
How much grout sealer do you need? Not much, I would recommend buying the smallest amount you can unless you are planning to seal a large amount of floor tile. You can usually seal an entire shower at least 3 times with just one pint of sealer.
And finally, I give you some tips for sealing your grout like how to remove grout sealer from your tile that has dried.

Can we please have this guy teach EVERYTHING on RUclips? From grouting to basket-weaving to handstands to French? I'm sure he could pull it off. Excellent work.
Thanks for the kind words!
LOL! But yes, true. This is totally saving me money and I don't have to worry about the bad reviews that companies are getting. I have a feeling they do a quick cheap way of doing it (but charging you a lot of money).
Bow making too
Seriously this guy is awesome!
Lol custom building products huh? I just used some of their sealer and its a joke, water soaks right past it. Why even bother with a sealer like that? Heck regrout every few years till you're tired of tile and put up a PVC surround.....really custom building products????
This is super! When I did my new homeowner walk through and they told me I had to seal all my grout/granite/tile I was like a deer in the headlights and have been procrastinating due to lack of knowledge for this timely project. This alleviated my stress on that issue! Foam paint brush...2 high fives for that idea!!
This is one of the best RUclips videos that I've seen. It's engaging and has all the important info. It's easy to grasp. The demos are clear. Very well made!
Thank you!! If only all instructional videos would be as clear and concise as yours.
Excellent instructions! You explained all the options, possible troubleshooting etc, as well as demonstrating the process. You are a natural teacher.
Do you need to use a dry paper towel or wet towel to wipe off the excess?
One of the best introductions I’ve heard, and I HATE intros. Thanks for your contribution to the DIY education space.
Thanks for the kind words!
Built a shower over a year ago. Wish I would have known this. Thanks for being clear, concise, and explaining everything so I can get on with making it look brand new again.
Glad it was helpful!
Just purchased a new home and glad I watched this video. You answered all my questions about whether to seal the grout. Thank you...
Dan Perry... You ROCK!!!👏👏👏 After watching your video, I feel totally confident about how to get the job done correctly! Thanks so much!
This is a good vid but, friends...have a care. The sealant has the consistency of watery milk. Very drippy. DON'T let the sealant dry on shiny tiles. Wipe each section as you go. I made the mistake of sloshing it on the whole wall and wiping up afterwards. Now I've got drip lines which has not only changed the sheen of the tiles but looks terrible.
great advice.
@@jferrer1973 he had a solution for that... did you try it?
Great comment! Thsnks for sharing!
Thanks for letting us learn from your mistakes. Much appreciated.
He said that if that happens to you apply more of the same grout sealer to the tile area you want to clean. And then wipe it up quickly. All will come off because it will sort of act as a solvent when you apply more to the area you want to clean.
Best video on this topic by far! Used a couple different small paint like sponge brushes to apply. Finished bathroom shower, tub wall and large floors in a couple hours. Excellent video- 🗣Many Thanks!!🎯
This is one of the best RUclips videos that I've seen. It' has all the important info. It's easy to understand. The demos are clear. Recommend using this video.
Excellent video! Very easy to understand for someone like me, who is doing this for the first time. Thank you!!!
I didn’t know I had to until when I bought my house. I am glad I found this video, thank you!
You dont "have" to. Its totally up to you.
If you do, great just make sure u do a thorough job and there are no unsealed areas. Otherwise u will trap water behind the grout if a tiny area is not sealed perfectly or a crack apoears and the moisture won't be able to evaporate.
I haven't sealed my grout because im clean its unnecessary. I also have a habbit, i take a shower n rinse off the walls while im in there before i get out (i dont leave giant mounds of soap bubbles all over to dry and ruin stuff). Anyway i cpean my a bathroom a max of 1 time a week usually once every 2 weeks. The tiles are all of my shower walls not the ceiling. I also turn on a small heater to assist in completely drying the bathroom to also help prevent mold after i shower. I replace my shower curtains prob every 6 months or so. Its just easier to me, totally up to u if u buy expensive ones and wash em.
It is not actually "necessary" to seal grout, just an option and totally up to you.
However if you do seal ur grout, then u absolutely need to redo every year at a min.
Very informative. I had to go through several videos but finally got to stop after this one. Thank you!!!
This was the fourth video I watched and everyone should start here, the others were completely useless!! Thank you for explaining it so thoroughly!!
Great video. Short, sweet and to the point...but well explained. Thank you!
Thanks for the video. I had no idea how to go about sealing our grout and tile. Now I feeling pretty confident I can do this. Just got to go get some.
Great video to get me started on sealing my new bathroom shower tile! Thank you!

This video was practically perfect.
Very good explanation. I am not in the business, just a homeowner. Really found this information easy to follow. Thank you.
You’re welcome. It was created for homeowners as well.
Great Video. I really like how you show the different types and I think that you did an exceptional job in showing how to apply it and also how to re-activate the product if it had dried on. Thanks again!!
Yup my builder told me to seal my grout as part of the handover briefing. Great video bro.
same
How did you do it, and how did it turn out. We close on Monday and have about 1000sqft of tile/grout.
why didnt he do it?
What a great video, all the questions about grout sealing answered, explanations clear and concise, no time-wasting anecdotes and detours. 13.25 minutes well spent.

Great video, so helpful. Very easy to follow and the tips are wonderful and complete
You had a great intro, instantly sold me on watching the whole video, great information throughout!
Very clear, concise and well explained!
Grout in bathrooms gets that way because of soap. Soap gets nasty and traps moisture in grout, causes mold. Seal it. Excellent product, excellent video!
hello, actually we have the best solution for your tile Gap sealing, our tile sealer has 44 colors ,mildew proof, stain proof, good impermeability, Contact us at mobile/whatsapp:+8615305201583
Bar soap is actually the culprit. The binders leave a film on the tile, and it can actually stain the grout. We recommend switching over to liquid soap for that reason. If you find bar soap has stained grout, the only solution to restore is to clean, and use a colored sealant.
Great info. Thank you. Having tile installed now so I'll be doing this next week.
Great demonstration. I need to seal a small kitchen backsplash and this video makes me realize I can do it. Thanks
Thank you sooooooo much!!! I’ve been Googling for 3 hours! Wish I had come here first! You’ve answered all my questions!!!
I just bought a house and I have a long, laundry list of things to fix and work on. Found your videos easy to follow! Just subbed.

Straight to the point.

Very helpful video - good information, well presented, easy to understand. Thank you.
Awesome video and thanks for breaking things down to an understandable level for us first timers. Keep up the great work.
Your explanation was very clear. Thank you!!
Thanks Dan, that was very helpful. I watched several videos yours provided the most useful information.
Thank you this was exactly what I needed to know. Now I need to know how to clean my before sealing.
First time home buyer here, and my first home is a new build! They recommended sealing the grout, and I had no idea how to do it. This is very informative, and now I feel confident that I can do this on my own! 😁 THANK YOU!!
I am here for the same reason. Now I understand a ittle better. Well time to head on to "how to best care for marble" dyi video. Any children at all
@@Apolac Good luck with everything!
Also, if you have a warranty, don't be shy to go to the builder with issues during the warranty time frame. We've had some issues pop up that shouldn't be issues for a new build home, and apparently it's not uncommon for that to happen, unfortunately! We've had some big things (like AC issues, and the front door not latching properly), and small things (like paint chipping on the exterior of the home, one lock that wasnt switched, etc) that the builder has needed to take care of in our warranty time frame
New first time home buyer too and here for the same reason l new construction
Same here!
Did you clean the tile before applying the sealer as they are newly installed tiles?
This is a paragon of excellence for an informational/instructional RUclips video. Thank you very much! I’ll look for you again next time I have to learn a new technique!
Thanks!
This was a very awesome video. Very thorough with valuable information. thank you this helped a lot.
Thank you so much for the video, and extra thanks for mentioning the respirator when using a spray bottle! Wouldn't have thought of it.
Thank you for showing us how this works. And how to get rid of the missed sealer. Awesome. Great for beginners like myself.
You’re welcome!
Yo the last tip at the very end is a banger 🎉
Very thorough and understandable for me, the homeowner! Thanks...I am now a subscriber!
Thanks for the informative video. Just closed on a new construction home yesterday. I want to take care of the grout before we move in. Thank you for providing all the information I need and for answering all possible questions as part of the video. Great job! I’m off to the hardware store.
Good luck!
Great job on video, pertinent info and different options to do things right is exactly what a rookie like me wanted
Good video it does make the water shed instead of soaking in the grout...
Great video! Answered all my questions.
Best video on the topic! From a Mason and Tile Setter.
Wow, thanks!
Seriously so informative and helpful! Thank you! Will be sealing our showers before we move into our new home and I believe this video answered most my questions. The one thing I would ask is; is there anything specific to do or be cautious about when sealing matte black tile?
Adding new sealant to misplaced dried sealant and then wiping it all off. Genius. Excellent presentation.
Sure
finally a good explanation
Thanks!! Appreciate the info, tips and how to seal grout and why!!
Very comprehensive. Thank you so much!
Very informative. Excellent video.

Very well explained! Thanks for the video!
Thank you so much for thorough videos !!! Good Job
Thanks for a great step by step video!
Very helpful. Answered all the questions I had on my mind. I also learned a little bit more than I expected.
Nice! Glad to hear it.
Really appreciate the information you presented. Now I know why the grout in my showers looks like crap after 4 years living in my newly remodeled home... the people who remodeled it didn't seal the grout and being ignorant of these things I had no idea that sealing grout was a thing. Not till now that it looks bad and is also cracking and crumbling out due to the house settling. Thanks for the information!
You’re welcome!
This is actually a pretty normal situation on new grout installations. Typically this occurrs in the vertical corners and above tub or shower pan. We recommend correcting the cracks with a sanded caulking.
@@rocketj7449 I knew cracking could occur due to settling, just like it happens with paint, but I seem to have had a lot of separation with perhaps 3/16" opening up and pieces falling right out. Would filling those with grout and then going over the smaller cracks with sanded caulking work ok or should I really be looking at removing the grout entirely? Been so busy I haven't had time to finish that bathroom so it's sat unused till now especially with the whole pandemic going on but I'd really like to take care of it as soon as I get some time as I did buy everything (except the sanded caulking.) Thanks for any advice you might have!
@@redemptusrenatus5336 You can certainly perform another grout repair, and add a product like "Stain Blocker" or "Grout shield" to your grout mixture to make your grout more durable, but all it takes is an eighth of an inch movement to crack grout, so if your walls shift or expand and contract, the crack could occur again. That's why we recommend correcting it with sanded caulking, as this allows flexiblity with building movement.
@@rocketj7449 I really appreciate your taking the time to respond. It seems like some sanded caulking was used in places but not everywhere apparently which seemed odd but I'm not sure if they did so because there was a large gap already existing and perhaps they filled it with grout instead. Can sanded caulking be used for larger gaps or will it shrink too much?
Super helpful and very clear explained. thanks
Super informative! Thanks!
I love the St. Jude commercials. Very real.
Thank you for your tips...very helpful!
THANK you very good teaching
This is super helpful! I just bought my first home and the shower grout is not sealed. A contractor just quoted me over $1000 to seal the grout and replace the silicone in the seams. So, I'm learning how to DIY it myself.

Glad it was helpful. Thanks for taking the time to comment.
Amazing video. Thank you for being so detailed. I’m about to seal the floor tiles in my new kitchen soon, using the Aquamix sealer you used as well.
You’re welcome!
Great video! I'm about to seal my granite and backsplash. After viewing your video I have everything I need to know!
@handymanstartup
I sealed granite and backsplash yesterday. There’s a film on my granite. Why did things happen and how can I fix it?
You may not hav wiped it down soon enough after applying it. Dry getting your rag damp with sealer again and wiping it with the damp rag. Then go back and wipe it with a clean cloth immediately.
Great video. Thanks so much, Dan.
Great video. Thank you!
thank you! Very clear and informative!
Best video ever that I’ve seen on RUclips
