- Saving a vanda from an extreme surgery process. Find out what extreme method we had to take in effort to try and save this orchids life. Time will can only tell if she/possible keikis will survive the ordeal.
I astonised that you have taken a drastic action to come over the infection.It is a surgical ampute.
Just wanted to this video was amazing. I haven't been very good about soaking my vanda everyday but I can see the changes. There is so much new growing coming from the root system. Blown away!
I bought a Vanda that I waited to purchase for more than a year. When I finally purchased it it was suppose to be near blooming size. What I received had fusorium I tried lots of remedies to no avail. I kept it far from my other orchids. After 4 months I gave up. However you have new growth on yours and great roots. I think yours will make it. Calcium and fish emulsion will help you tremendously.
A friend of mines father passed and he gifted me 3 Vandaceous orchids. 1 died..one lost the crown and the 4rd seems to never soak up much water even though the vellum is intact. It actually started sending up a flower spike which turned brown and halted. Im so hoping that with some of these tips I can save at least the best one. Thanks for sharing and giving me some hope. :)

That was an awesome procedure, Dr. Young. If l should ever run into something as nasty as that fungus, I don't have to cry, because Dr. Young has showed me how to combat that issue. Thanks Dr. Young for sharing and happy growing.

Hi Maria. Thank you so much for educating us on your videos. I have inherited from a deceased estate a whole bunch of sadly neglected orchids which I am attempting to bring back to life. Unfortunately my dear friend who passed away in December obviously didn't have the stamina at the end to care for them properly. Anyway! I am considering this a challenge and hoping that I will be able to save at least some of them. One question. I see you place your little vanda orchids in small basket like containers with the roots popping through the spaces in the basket. What happens when these plants grow into bigger plants and need repotting? How do you get them out of those little wooden slats without damaging them? Thank you again for sharing.
Hi Maria: Tks for sharing notes. Im a beginner with orchids, not too lucky! I have 3 vandas; 2 look dryish with NO leaves, some roots they only turn green (a bit) when I wet them!? I have one of them with only 2 leaves roots look grayish....what possibilities if any, may I have? Thanks. Wishing for high hopes. Lisa

This was a very sad case...The fungus infection was worst than what I thought...and it appeared it was too infected to be saved...but I have it my all...and even though she did not survive...I did learn a lot.. and have tried other effective methods since that time...so all was not lost. Thanks for watching! :)

Hi Maria, I’ve a vanda garayi seedling that is mottled & yellowish leaves but one is green. Potted in a pot of bark & sphag when I received it. I notice that the tip of the leaves are drying off. I normally grow my orchid in semi water culture, do you think it’s better to transfer now that the cold autumn has already unfolded? Pls. tell me what to do.

I am new in vanda raising.. I want to know what chemical did you use to cover the cut area, the brown POWDER and why it was applied to it...
I would love your advice as to my vanda crown rot situation. I too live in Florida (south Florida), I’m right on a lake, but unfortunately, my beautiful porch is useless because no matter what I’ve done, my orchids (all varieties) always get too much sun. I’ve had the worst trouble with vandas. The subject vanda is hung in my palm trees out front and was doing fantastic. Until... crown rot. I think I caught it fairly early, yanked a bunch of the top leaves off, cleaned it w peroxide and then added some cinnamon. There are still at least 6/7 leaves on each side (no new growth but no signs of crown rot either), and now there are three keikis, two growing way way down out of the base and another growing from the stem just above the roots (that’s the largest one). So with the original stem still looking good, is it necessary to remove it all as you did in this video? Is there any chance that a vanda can continue to grow from a stem that experienced crown rot? Would love to have your opinion! Thank you for all of your videos! They have helped me tremendously in my growing hobby :)
Lo Bo Hey there and sorry to hear about your vanda but the good news is it gave you some vanda offshoots! Just as long as you are not seeing any rotting in the mama plant then it should be safe to continue to grow on her. Just keep watchful eye over it. Oh my goodness, that was drastic! Can it survive without any leaves? Sending good vibes and a speedy recovery to your vanda.
Yes it can actually survive without leaves...in a case like this, the roots would take over the function of creating energy for the plant...the main concern now is the infection not coming back...it is the infection that would more than likely kill this plant....I am keeping my fingers crossed in hopes that the infection is fully eradicated and that it can bounce back. Keep your fingers crossed.

I believe it has a good chance! The glucose produced by photosynthesis is its good to provide to the keikis so they have a chance

At 06:18. after handling the infected area with bare hands, you had some black specks on your hands. I hope you used that disinfectant again after cutting the stem.

YES INDEED...and I continue to disinfect this orchid...just in attempt to eradicate and keep other infections from setting in. Thank you for the well wishing and I am keeping my fingers crossed that all goes well.
Can use ground charcoal instead of ground cinnamon.

we haven't talked in forever and ever and ever and I miss you. I just picked any one of your videos just so that I can communicate with you. I was wondering how you fared the storm. my little garden is in such a mess that it's so sad my orchids are fine and so am I succulents cuz I brought them inside but my sails and big tarp that my swing and my sofa or under has to be redone so right now lot of my plants are in the Sun that should not be. but I think God is bringing me the men from my Fellowship to come and clean up for me. well I hope to hear from you.👉👵👈

Did you Vanda make it? I am late in asking but I have a sick Vanda so I was searching youtube for ways to treat it and came across this video.
I am sad to say this one did not survive...the infection spread so quickly and it was overtaken. She is now in orchid heaven. :(
The plant has pretty good roots so if those nubbins are keikies for sure they will survive at least few of them.
YES! YES! YEEEESSSSSS! That's what I like to hear!!!! The nubbins that were left over from the cutting are continuing to form...my only concern is there have been about 3 roots that have yellowed and browned...I am hoping that it is just a reaction from the extreme surgery and also from the strong chemical used...I hope it is not a sign of another infection because I fear it would be the final straw that breaks the camel's back... :( ...I still have my fingers crossed! :) Thank you for watching and HAPPY!!! PS How is your baby making phychopsis doing??? :)
The plant start getting yellow and died fast, the babies didn't make it since they were very young and not having enough roots.
+fifi fifi WOW and so sorry to hear that...I had a phychopsis too that sadly went to orchid heaven due to black rot...and is the reason why I now keep most of my orchids indoors.
How is the progress of the keikis? Any sign of life?

Hi Maria, I think it will make it, You did it with the phaleanopsis that you did the extreme propergation on, So I see no reason why it won't work,, So good luck, How is the phal now?

Unfortunately this did not survive...it was already too far gone by the time I discovered the sever infection. :(

You are absolutely right...I have such a bad habit...but I did warn everyone else to. I promise I'm getting better with wearing gloves...hopefully soon I will wear gloves every time.

that looked like crown rot, make sure that when you water your vandas phalaenopsis, renantheras orchids that you dont water the crown so that doesnt happen :)
Alfred Gamer Yes, crown rot along with other orchid infections can be a common occurrence for outdoor growers. Unfortunately there is no way to control mother nature in her watering methods. My goal is to have a greenhouse so that we can keep these type of infections to a minimum. Thanks for watching and HAPPY GROWING!
