    I started suddenly with orchids at the age of 24, 10 years ago for reasons I don't even know. I'm not the flower kinda guy but these flowers have captivated me so much. N yesterday by chance trying to find information on oncidium zapii I found your channel. I now only have a vanda, a phal, a ludisia, an oncidium n 1 braisilian orchid which name escapes me. My biggest lost was my Dracula lotax. It never bloomed but it was a cute lil orchid. Anyway long story short, I like your channel, energy n narration. The tips are cool. Thanks :)

    Hello! I'm watching you every day! You are my inspiration. But i have a problem with vandas.
    I had two of them in a different environment. One was alive for a month, another one for 2 months but now have started lose her leaves starting from down the same as the first one. During all those 2 months when i bought it it had black spots on the leaves, And also there are small black things next to the stam down , it it rooting or sick? I'm not sure. The root system didn't grow at all for those months. I don't know what is it and how to help. I don't want to loose the second one! Ill be really happy to see your advice when you have time! Thank you for what you give us!

    Just to add some more info ... I live in North Central Florida and am working on making my first (and only until I really get the hang of it) vanda happy. I have had this plant about two years and have had problems but none of them having to do with rot of any kind. This plant has lived inside, outside, been outside in the rain overnight, regularly watered over the entire plant with well water, and never a problem with rot.
    I assumed since they grow upright that water in the crown would not be a problem but I am being more careful now just in case.
    My indoor climate ranges from 80F (27C) with 50% humidity in the summer to 65F (18C) (did not have the humidity gauge last winter) in the winter.
    Outdoors this summer was mild in the low 90sF (32C) with 100% humidity in the morning and decreasing a bit as the day progresses. Normal summer temperatures here are usually reach 100F (38C) to 105F (40C) and can go to 110F (43C). Temperatures drop about by about 20 degrees F at night from the daytime high.
    Wintertime temperatures are around 40F (4C) but do go down to freezing at times and there is usually a day or two where it goes to 20F (-7C)
    Note that I try to keep most of my plants inside as much as possible since the regular afternoon thunderstorms here in the summer can be rather violent. Not much fun trying to get plants under cover when something is whipping up.

    Buna Dani,
    Multumesc frumos!

    I lost 3 vanda seedlings to this issue. So sad . Had them for so long 4 years. Also looks like one of my miniature species also a goner . Ironically , the roots look great. Oh well, you win some you loose some. Good info video.

    I always water early in the day so the breezes and warmth can naturally evaporate any water that happens to get on the leaves. ESPECIALLY true in the cold weather. I grow my Vandas in wooden baskets with moss. It keeps moisture around the roots for a day or so enabling them to get more to drink in addition to their soaking time. The moss begins to dry quickly and does not keep the roots wet for long. I soak once a week while it's warm and every two weeks when the months are cold.

    My angraecum sesquipedile came frozen and I lost the top 4 leaves to rot but, kinda like vandas, just taking good care of the plant it put off side growths.

    interesting topic danny! nice seeing the dennisoniana, i have a cross with limbata , the other parent but the leaves take after the denisoniana , very curly and undulated like yours ! i think your climate because you're in the mediterranean is much more Arid , you have less humidity ? or it feels less humid because of how the mediterranean plateau is drier, whereas florida is tropical but a lot more lush but they still have the sun and high temps. to deal with like you. xoxoL

      Hi, I show my humidity levels in the video ;) not entirely sure what the difference is, but maybe my area is even hotter due to the proximity to Africa, but it's def different :)

    On your vandas do you experience bud blust ,what do you think am doing wrong? Needed help there inside my greenhouse.

    • @p4ul1010
      @p4ul1010 6 лет назад

      Connie Aguilar when I experiencie bud blast in my vandas is because there is something happening that they dont like, for example excesive drought periods, to much wind, or to much bright light. Try adressing some of those first to see if it haves results. Good luck!!

    How do they avoid crown rot in their native habitat where it rains pften?

    • @MissOrchidGirl
      @MissOrchidGirl  4 года назад

      Hi, many don't need to, water evaporates fast due to wind and air movement. Bacterial climate is also different in those parts of the world. Some who are unlucky sadly die off, as part of natural selection.

    I usually gently pull up on the new Vanda growth with "rot" while it is still short and tender and a new leaf shows in a matter of days. I illustrated this process at Orquideas-Orchids community at Goigle+ years ago and had several responses from growers in Southeast Asia explaining this usually happens in their climate if Vanda roots are watered too late in the afternoon on exceptionally hot days. It was explained that water in the crown was not the cause. I again illustrated the "rot" at a later date and the same cause for it was explained by even more growers confirming it was caused by watering the roots too late on exceptionally hot days. These responses were not by casual growers, but rather by those in the business. The Vandas I illustrated were maintained in full Eastern exposure and under cover from rain as well. The problem never returned since I water my Vandas early in the day. I am only referring to my Vandas which are not fully exposed and are out in the rain day and night.

      Hi John, thanks for sharing :) I however did shower my Vandas (on video) and the 'rot' happened right afterwards. I also maintain water around the roots as much as possible, morning to night if I can with no ill effect for the main part, I have been doing this for a few months with no ill effect.. except when I shower my orchids. Good to know this can happen in your region, in my case I tend to believe this is not the case, due to the wild inconsistency with the other Vandas, due to me showering my Vandas and the way the leaves in both cases were trapped in the previous leaf, together with the water.

    • @MissOrchidGirl
      @MissOrchidGirl  6 лет назад

      Later edit: also not sure what you mean heat, but my Vandas were always exposed to at least 30-33 deg celsius almost every night in summer for the past 2 years, with my microfiber setup and wet roots.. I sometimes would water them at night with no ill effect once again. So I don't think I have reasons to think your case applies, or am I missing something? Also, presuming a vanda is potted with wet medium for 2 consecutive days, would this still happen?

    • @MissOrchidGirl
      @MissOrchidGirl  6 лет назад

      Hi John, I was actually really thinking about what your observations were and trying to find a logical explanation for it. I am affraid I couldn't, do you have a reason, a solid biological explanation for what you observed, or is it just a suspicion? I am asking because, having thousands of viewers, I cannot afford to just say anything, I need solid explanations. Being experienced in orchid growing doesn't make us biologists or physicists, so I am never blindly following experts opinions without explanations. Therefore it stuck with me all night lol, I don't want to tell people that if they keep potted Vandas outside in summer they are doomed, hope you understand :)) I actually found what I think is a solid explanation, which I happen to get here too, check this out www.growsave.co.uk/database/how-to-avoid-condensation/humidity has nothing to do with watering, but it is based on science and can apply to hot, humid climates. Do you think that this might be a possible reason for your observation, if you are in lack of other explanations?
