Today we tend for the Vanda orchids finally! time to go back to the basket setup, the proper way. Also welcome rePot me to our family!
    ▼▼▼More info below!▼▼▼
This year has been pretty tough for my Vanda orchids and I am the one to blame. After a series of unfortunate.. decisions, they are now set back and recovering. So when rePot me reached out, my Vandas were my first thought!
rePot me is the largest orchid supply company in the United States and I know them for a lot of time. I use the MSU fertilizer that they provide for the past 2 years! I am so happy to partner wit them for future videos in which we get to test and try their products!
    Visit rePotme here go.missorchidg...

rePot me is offering a 10% on your next purchase if you use the code ORCHIDGIRL
    About themselves rePot me say:
We started in 2006 and have grown to be the largest orchid supply company in the United States. Our founders, David and Ruth, are avid orchid growers and the quality of the products we sell reflects that. We set out with a goal to create a product line that simplified the life of orchid hobbyists worldwide. Ruth, the woman responsible for rePotme, remembers buying 50 pound bags of charcoal, fir, perlite, etc. and making her own mixes on her deck. She remembers drilling holes in pots that had no drainage and how difficult it was to source good fertilizer. She set out to build a better world for orchid growers.
Today you can buy hand blended mixes in the exact quantity you need. Long gone are the days of drilling holes in pots to keep your orchid alive. We now carry hundreds of orchid pots that provide optimal drainage. Everything you need to grow orchids (and other houseplants) can be delivered to your door with just a few clicks.
A lot has changed since 2006. rePotme has grown from being run out of a basement to needing 20 acres of land to operate. The one thing that hasn't changed is our dedication to our customers and staying true to Ruth's original vision; to help others enjoy growing orchids as much as she does.

You're going to love those baskets; especially when you see how fast roots will roam around freely as they reach and cling on to the wood slats. Enjoy.

That's a great collaboration. :) I'm a huge fan of growing Vandas in wooden baskets. I don't have enough buckets to soak all Vandas overnight at the same time, too. But I've created a habit of throwing some of them in the bucket one day and the other ones when the first batch is done. I think in my climate a plastic lining would impair the longevity of the baskets. Did repotme provide you with information on the wood? I find it important to avoid supporting unsustainable rain forest wood harvesting, that's why my baskets are self-made or second hand. Have fun rebasketing and happy growing! :)

That's great Danni :D I've ordered from them a few times and always have a great experience with them. I called and talked to them once and they couldn't have been nicer and more helpful. Now I'm thinking of eventually ordering their MSU fertilizer for sure, I never tried it. Congrats Danni, that's so cool, look forward to seeing what you try out from them. I love those baskets too, I have a few of them.

    Hi Danni
In an attempt to reduce watering frequency I’ve lined the base of my Vanda baskets with gutter guard and have sprinkled large LECA between the roots. I’m in Australia so our hot summer should test out this set up. Fingers crossed this’ll work 🤞

Small silicon spatulas (cheap) serve very well to press hot glue against the sides - no burnt fingers. Also use when assembling floral wreaths.

Are you not worried that once the Vandas settle you can't separate them from the wood? I use large glass vases...in any case very happy for you with the repot me partnership Yay 🎉🎉🎉

    • @miriamendersby_soprano5503
      @miriamendersby_soprano5503 6 лет назад

Lots of people who keep vandas in baskets dont try to separate them, they simply place the basket inside a larger one when the orchid needs more room, since there is no medium to cause rot and the baskets have spaces for the roots to grow out of! Maybe that's what Dani is planning?

Hi Danni! Just watched your video on repotting Vanda in wood baskets. Both of my Vandas have 2’ long roots, do I feed them through the slats on the sides (since I will line the basket floors) ? Several roots are dark and shriveled, should I cut them? There are several healthy roots as well! Thanks, Liz

After watching your video I ordered a wooden vanda basket from rePotme and have a follow-up question regarding the watering routine. I only have one vanda right now and I keep it indoors. It's currently hanging in a clear plastic pot that I made very airy by creating "slits" down the sides with a soldering iron. I soak it every morning and once it's done I tip the pot and remove most of the water. Once I receive the wooden basket should I continue with this routine and immerse the whole basket (that I will line with plastic as you do in your video) in water? You mentioned watering every 4-5 days, but I'm not sure I would be able to keep the roots hydrated enough. In that case, wouldn't the roots have to be sitting in water? Also, with what frequency should I soak the roots in fertilized water? Thank you Danny!

I have two vandas with extremely long roots. They are both in ugly plastic baskets, one is filled with coco coir and looks rotted. Can I safely cut the baskets off and give them wood baskets? I have been told that messing with vanda roots is a death sentence for the plant. Thank you.

Danny, do you see any difference between Vandas and Mokaras?? My vandas bloom well and live quite happy in glass vases in a southeast window and they also get extra light (artificial, yes, I live in Norway - the light sucks). The mokaras grow quite fast and produce lots of new roots (also in glass vases, same place and setting as my vandas), big and healthy leaves, but no sign of flowers yet. Do you have any experience with them and do you think there is any kind of difference when cultivating them (specially compared to vandas)?

Hi Danny - Did your vandas have to go through a period of root rot after switching to this Vanda setup? I have noticed on mine after the switch (its been a couple of months) that half of the vanda roots have experienced root rot because they are not used to be in water for longer. I live in the SouthEast US so our climates are somewhat similar. Any tips on this setup? I can see that some of my Vandas are growing new roots but they never grow long enough to reach the bottom of the basket. In result, I can see that some of the vandas have started to drop leaves from the base of the leaf.

    Hello. . .
I have an Oncidium Colmanara jungle monarch. I have had it for over 1 year (also has flowered) . I re-potted it as I wasn't happy with the medium I got it in. It has grown a new pseudobuld and has started to sprout a new flower spike! But these past 2days I have noticed it has gotten a few tiny tiny black spots on the leaves. . . NOT all over. I am just wondering what it could be and what I could do to fix it!
    Hope you can help!
