1:07 Are the action sequences in this movie excellent? The fight against Cheetah was worse than Black Panther vs Kilmonger by most of the accounts I've heard.

_That specific_ scene is indeed a dud.

Problem is that Jenkins ain't a writer, she just directs. And because she does it so great, they thought she was the right person to write the story... Noup!

ironically the piece of music that you liked while Wonder Woman learns how to fly is not from Hans Zimmer but Adagio In D Minor by John Murphy and originally from the movie Sunshine

Great review as usual. I agree with a lot of the criticisms of this movie, but I enjoy Gadot and Pine’s characters so much I can overlook the flaws.

Thank you for your thoughts, Chris. I've seen a lot of negative thoughts on this movie but I just came out of the theater and thought "it really wasn't that bad." I liked it slightly more than you did but I can understand your points and criticisms.

Oh man, the day has come Chris where I don't see eye to eye with you on a film, lol. But I think they were for reasons that are ultimately subjective.
I didn't particularly care for the tone overall. It was consistent, I will give it that, but it was a quite a departure in tone from the first film. Where you saw at it as Jenkin's confidence showing, I saw it as a bit full of itself. Everything from the performances, to the score came off that way to me. It also didn't help that I feel like another film/show playing off of the 80's nostalgia thing has long lost its luster and comes off as a bit lazy when it comes to producing a screenplay.
The production was very good overall, but personally, it just wasn't enough for me to overlook those over-the-top elements that made the film feel a bit contrived/cheesy.
Regardless.. Another fantastic review from you. Love you man! Hope the holidays have treated you and yours well thus far. Have a Happy New Year:) Take care!

I think there’s an indescribable quality to certain films where you just feel secure in knowing you’re in the hands of a competent story teller that allows you to get swept up in the film. While I love the big swings Jenkins took, there was a lack of precision and execution in this sequel that really hurt the viewing experience.

I thoroughly enjoyed WW84. Yes it was a bit too long and rewrites could have helped. Yet again I wouldn't want to miss anything that I saw. Another aspect that held the movie down for me was the location hopping. Honestly I had a hard time following where they were. They were jumping all over they place. A location tag in the corner for a second or two woulda been nice.

I absolutely loved the cast and acting, each character individually so great. It was the script that was lacking for me. It did not leave me feeling at all like the first. I don't mind the tone but doesn't make sense to me to make that switch after the success of the first movie. I have seen 84 twice and will not revisit it because I'll just continue to watch the first one which leaves me breathless each time. I like Patty and I do look forward to ww3 and rogue squadron for sure, she has a passion and I think she'll learn from where ww84 lacks. Thanks so much for the review.

It's not the train wreck many are saying or the triumph others are either. The plot is unnecessarily convoluted and I think Cheetah should've been the main antagonist instead of secondary. She is essentially the Lex/Joker to Wonder Woman and was in the backseat for the most part. it also seemed more like a Diana Prince film than a Wonder Woman feature. Gal is really owning this role but should have had a better script. 3/5.

Great review Chris! I agree with so much of what you laid out here. I'll admit I spent my first view of this video trying to figure out your film collection order logic. :) Is that MCU and Potter at the top? Then it looks like a section that is ordered by director? Ooooh, in release order too? I like that a lot. Then after that is alphabetical it looks like?
We agree on a ton here and I liked it even though I had issues as well. The song playing in the scene you mentioned by the way I think is actually John Murphy's theme from Danny Boyle's film, 'Sunshine'. That film is one of my off-the-wall favorite films so I would recognize the score anywhere. That was actually one additional issue I had with WW84 that they chose to use that rather than writing something new.
Loved your take on this though as always! Keep up the good work!

I don't understand what people are looking for when they watch a movie. From what I feel in hearing people's feedback of films, it has little to do with what's actually occurring in the film and more about what their expectations are before the film starts.
If you had a director's hand sticking out the side of the frame throughout the film, would that not draw you out of it? Why, then, does seeing the writer's hand ALL OVER THE PLACE not draw you out? The movie starts and we have a crowd of 100s watching 42 people do 16 different Olympic events all at the same time - the writer calling for spectacle without having the ability to create an organic scene. Then, a young girl ducks under a beam we are shown is 2 inches from the platform. Then there is a 1:1 ratio of horses to women who made it to shore; someone psychic must have set this all in motion. Well yes, as confirmed by the women each having a specific color of target to shoot despite there being more women in the beginning of the race. How did they know which colors to shoot? What happens if they miss their shot and hit someone else's target? This whole, garbage scene concludes with WW's two mother figures staring directly into the camera and saying, "This movie is about truth." - This is the writer just completely covering the screen with their hand.
But then the movie isn't about truth, is it? PP was a dishonest business man, but he was an honest stone. He gave people what they asked for. Who was lying? Then there's the monkey's paw, except not. The first thing that happens is in line with the monkey's paw. The dude wants a coffee, but it burns him. The lesson of the monkey's paw being that the grass isn't always greener on the other side. People think that if they only had "x" they'd be happy, but life - and the paw - doesn't work like that. Right after that, the paw takes away Diana's powers and K Wigg's humanity. Diana's powers are her greatest asset. K Wigg's humanity is something that has left her the butt of every joke and entirely unhappy with her life. Neither of these fit with the monkey's paw, nor with each other, nor with the coffee thing. Then, PP just changes the stone's rules (as fluid as they already were) and makes it so he can choose what happens, so the whole thing is meaningless.
This movie is chalk full of contrivances, terrible action, worse special effects, overacting (PP) and underacting (Gal), and the writer's hand being visible at all times.
Oh, also, WW can't break a lock without trouble, but then can run as fast as cars, kick tanks away, lasso a missile, and save two mannequins with her spider-swinging.
So, what were you looking for, Chris? Did you watch a movie to see what world and story the writer was moved by or did you want to watch a 2.5 hour film about three people wanting to shove dumb garbage in your face and hope you were too entranced with your joy of nonsense and a director's willingness to steal a writing job from someone with talent to see how awful this mess was?
DC, hire writers talented enough to get their characters out of situations without needing plot contrivances at every turn, please. There are thousands of nobodies out there who could have given you a better script at 1/300th the pay. Your movies keep failing because you keep hiring people who couldn't write a decent story if their lives depended on it - this stands for literally every single DCEU film, without exception.

Haven't seen it, but the consensus I've seen is that this is a MASSIVE step down from the first film. I really hope the Snyder Cut gives us more/better Wonder Woman stuff than this.

Overall enjoyed it, but can't say that it quite hit what it was going for as much as it could have, the tone was a little funky, but had fun anyways.
I just wish I could've seen it in a theater, some scenes would've been so gorgeous in a cinema.

I think we let directors off the hook too easy when we blame writers for story issues and still call the film "well directed." (I KNOW Patty Jenkins wrote and directed this film but my point Is still valid so stay with me here...)
Steven Spielberg has often said that a director is a STORY TELLER first and foremost. Before all those other things (score, lighting, performances, etc.) is the STORY. As he rightly pointed out, any number of commercial directors can shoot well and get good performances. But can they sustain a narrative for 2 hours? (Or 2.5 in this case,) If not, then they aren't good film directors. They have failed in their first responsibility; to tell a good story. If the screenplay sucks, then a director should have it re-written. Paraphrasing Spielberg again; A director should have the script rewritten until it's the story he wants to tell. In short, I can't agree with the 90% of critics who keep saying Patty did a good job directing this film when she didn't sustain a narrative. If she couldn't write it herself, she should have asked someone else to rewrite her script. But she seemed to already HAVE the story she wanted to tell and told it the way she wanted to. Which doesn't inspire me to praise her directing skills in this case.

I've seen this movie with friends and overall it was a decent popcorn flick but it feels very shallow. Both in it's execution and message. It also has some unnecessary controversies on Twitter because of course it does. It's a popular mainstream movie.

Good review. Personally, I would have given the film a 2/5. My reason being the lack of logic and numerous plot problems ultimately distracted from the story, thus resulting in a quite messy and unentertaining movie.

Pretty forgettable movie. I really wanted it to double down on what made the first Wonder Woman so great and it turned out being just fine. I agree with everything you said - a better script was what this film was missing. Looking forward to the inevitable fan edit that manages to cut a solid 20 minutes and hopefully improve things a little.
