  • For my Extended Cuts of The Hobbit films, I decided 'The Desolation of the Smaug' needed a new ending and 'The Battle of the Five Armies' needed a new beginning!

    I've just finished all three extended cuts of The Hobbit by Chris. These are the versions I will be watching going forward. He has taken films which are each about a 5 or 6 out of 10 each, into easily 7 or 8's out of 10. He has ultimately made edits that preserve the original, expanded vision of Jackson, Boyens, and Walsh, and made what was already there work. Weak elements like Radagast, Tauriel and Kili, and the much-maligned Alfrid, work perfectly fine now with Chris' dynamic editing. Chris' version can't fix some inherent flaws of 3 movies for one book, but each movie does work pretty well now, and shows you how much greatness was there along within the bloat. In some moments, films 2 and 3 even reminded me of LOTR. I didn't expect that. Bravo, Chris.

    I'd love to see a Middle Earth super cut using the 6 extended editions and have it flow into one single epic marathon movie... all in chronological order by moving flashbacks (such as beginning with the great war with Sauron followed by Smeagol discovering the ring) and removing some of the extraneous material Peter Jackson added

    Just finished AUJ EE. Nice work, mate! Gonna begin TDoS EE in a moment. I think the way you've maintained the Trilogy arc is still more palatable rather than condensing them into a far too long film. The issue I had with those was not having an Andy Serkis Gollum sketch at the end of the Five Armies closing credits, not to mention actors like Sylvester McCoy, Cate Blanchett and Christopher Lee being in the credits but not being shown. Granted, that would have meant more work for those other editors, but try to maintain continuity I say!
    Still, I didn't mind that The White Council and Radagast were included and I always wanted them and the Dol Goldur sub-plot included in The Hobbit films anyway. I get it - it's meant to be about Bilbo's adventures and I never saw any issue with the Prologue either.
    Now, unlike all the other edits out there, did you include The Enchanted River scene (guess I'll find out soon)? 🤞😁

    Also - I have to say, your new color-grading is INCREDIBLE. An Unexpected Journey, especially, feels like a whole new movie - a much better movie, which looks and feels a lot closer to the Lord of the Rings trilogy, while still fitting the more whimsical style of The Hobbit.
    It did make me wonder, though - would it be possible to add some (subtle!) film grain to the Hobbit films? These films still feel a little too clean for me. The grain should make them feel more consistent with LOTR, *and* hide some of the fake-ness of the CGI, *and* add some texture to the overly-soft visuals of the last 2 films, *and* just be a better fit for the genre (medieval fantasy films just work better with film grain. It makes them FEEL older).
    I don't know how complicated the process of adding grain is... But I really believe it'll look better that way. It even looked a little better when I tried it on my crappy VLC.

    • @ChrisHartwell
      @ChrisHartwell  4 года назад +1

      It is _possible_ but I don't really think it'll produce a look that is _that_ much "closer to the _Lord of the Rings_ trilogy". If you look at those original films, they are actually quite _crisp_ and sharp. Much of it has to do how those different mediums capture and treat light and color. A great thought though!

    Hey Chris, thank you so much for being a humble and honest filmmaker, please don't ever change! Your cuts of the Hobbit seem to be really well done (from what little I've seen!) Just wanted to stop by and leave that encouragement for you, and one more thing. 3 years ago, Jesus, God's Son, saved me from my sins and granted everlasting life as a free gift. This is a gift, completely unearned, that I believe we all need. Why? Because unfortunately the Bible says we're all sinners against a Holy God, deserving of His righteous wrath. For every lie told, every time we took something that wasn't ours, looked lustfully at a woman, or used God's name as a cuss word, these things anger God. He is Holy and we are unholy in His eyes, and the Bible says our fit punishment is hell forever. But, God is also rich in mercy, and doesn't want anyone to perish. So he sent Jesus to die for us, take our punishment and forgive all our sins away if we've repented and surrendered ourselves to Him! I hope this makes sense and I hope this is you. God bless and take care!

    I loved this change! The second film works so much better this way. I just wish it could be done for the theatrical cuts too... Yes, that would mean that the 3rd film couldn't open with an exciting action scene (because there's no Gandalf sub-plot), but I think that's okay. After all - Return of the King doesn't start with an action scene, right? It starts with a slow, harrowing flashback to Gollum's backstory. Maybe the same could be done for the theatrical cuts? Repurposing one of the earlier flashbacks for the intro to BOtFA, so that DoS could end with Smaug's death?

    Hi Chris, I've just finished your Extended Cut of all three films. You've done a fantastic job here on focusing the plot much more closely to Bilbo's journey. These editions flowed for me much better and avoided the bloat. You really have trimmed out the fat. I like how you have handled the more ridiculous bits which I always had the impression they were forced (looking at you Legolas). The big problem for these films was the move from 2 - 3 films during production which was clearly an after thought and so those sequences felt shoe horned in. I think the ending you have produced for DoS is a cleaner conclusion to the film although in the cinema the 'What have we done" line worked as a great cliff hanger (especially when we had to wait a year for the conclusion). Shame you didn't (couldn't) include Smaug exiting the mountain to attack Lake Town. I wonder if had PJ had the time the final version would be closer to what you have produced here. In the Extended edition appendices they give the impression they really ran out of time because of the 2-3 switch which then throws out the balance of the whole structure, which they worked hard to mask. Again this goes to show PJ is a master to have produced these to the level we have with those time constraints.
    I've not seen your theatrical cut of the films so this will be next and I can't wait. Thank you

    I have an idea for you, if you still work and do make changes to your cuts of the hobbit films. How about moving the flashback with smaug destroying dale and going into erebor to the beginning of the second film. The first will profit from the change, because we begin with bilbo and his home, wich is also a better introduction to the world of middle earth for first time viewers. They get the information about erebor and smaug along side bilbo, when the dwarfes tell him about it and dont get overwelmed by big action stepieces in the beginning. When bilbo sees the lonely mountain the first time at the end of the first film, so do we. Now for the second film: when we see the Flashback now, we see the destroction of dale, when it was in its glory days, a place, we will go to in this film. When we see the ruins of dale now, we will remember how it was before smaug came, because we saw it just At the beginning of this film and not the one prior. The second flashback of the black arrow creating a weak point on smaugs chest, that we get in laketown, it will fit better with the first.

    • @leonardosatalino7045
      @leonardosatalino7045 3 года назад

      Also, it will add a bit of mystery to what happend to dale. It would feel similar to the flashback of smeagol becoming gollum in the third lord of the rings movie. And it allows for a better reintroduction into the world than the bree scene with thorin and gandalf, which now can be cut. It also shows us something familiar with old bilbo introducing places and people like thranduil, wich we will see in this film
