      Tubes tend to make that pop n click sound when they fail. I had one last week start making a similar noise, then glow bright red.
      My guess is the same or similar happened here. The trouble shooting here may have caused more harm.
      Always best to turn off, unplug, let it all cool down then remove the tubes and see if you cooked one.
      Easy fix with hand wired amps, but painfully difficult to trouble shoot these cheap mass produced ones.

    • @Skinny_Karlos
      @Skinny_Karlos 6 лет назад +1

      Alan Dunn Exactly. If she's come straight from the store you know she's done a bit of travelling that you (Shane, in this case) doesn't know about and it's easy for a valve/tube to fail. Also, the 18wt mode was fine but engage the last two el34's (or whatever, Fender - I'd think 6v6's) in 30 wt mode, and you'd look there first.

    Would be good to know what it actually was that went? Was it a fuse, or output tubes, or something else? The difference in repair cost could range from 50c or $500 depending on what happened. Just thought it might make a good follow up for all those that have been thinking about getting one of those.....

    • @rselp
      @rselp 6 лет назад

      It wasn't a blown fuse...the pilot lights and tubes were still glowing...the volume just dropped to ~2% of the previous level before it crapped out!

    • @dcs2402
      @dcs2402 6 лет назад +2

      rselp , and that's why things like that mooer ge200 thing that Shane demoed recently start to look attractive. That's why old guitarists all have screwed backs... Take your favorite Tube amp to a gig, then lug another one as well in case that same thing happens. Especially now when the technology is really starting to FEEL like all the things we love about our old tube amps, but with out the huge dollars, massive weight and uncertain reliability... I'm slowing coming round to that reality.

      Some really tasty playing by the Doc until it shat itself lol. It sounded great though!
      Lol, I still want one for some reason.

    • @jharekcarnelian
      @jharekcarnelian 6 лет назад +1

      I have come round to that reality. I have a Laney LC30 tube amp I love here, however it weighs a ton and is a pain to maintain for the reasons you mention. Having said that it's more reliable than many tube amps I owned as Laney normally builds very reliable equipment. However I couldn't be bothered with the joy of 45 gazillions leads, pedals etc. and eventually bit the bullet and bought a Boss Katana. I am so far more than happy, I only use a few guitar effects anyway and those I use it does quite well and it's portable and built to a high standard for the price point. The Laney is probably going to find itself getting sold of to be honest as it weighs a ton, takes up a lot of space and I only really need one amp.

      Says a guy who’s obviously never worked on guitar amps. Have you ever had to chase down hum or a rattle? Or a buzz that only happens intermittently? Or tried to fix a no name amp from the 50’s or 60’s that has no schematic- and even the internet has nothing about the amp or the amps circuit? Good luck fixing any of those in an hour. In most cases you’re correct ( i e. new tubes & re-bias- new electrolytics - grid resistors or things like a speaker swap) but you’d be surprised how many amps come in that are beyond “servicing” these amps have already been “worked” on by multiple other people that were all chasing the same problem(s)- which were never solved but made worse by modifications made to the circuit in trying to fix the problem. So not only do you have to actually fix the hum or popping noise- you get to fix all the crap work done by the last 3 people who tried to fix it in the last 20 years. So you put it back to stock. Once it’s back to stock only then can you start to diagnose the & fix the actual problems. It takes time & patience to repair tube amplifiers properly.

    Funny, I was talking to my amp tech yesterday about this exact problem with the EL84 Bassbreakers. I had a 15W that kept blowing the power tubes. The third time it went I said "enough" and exchanged it. My tech (David Aurora Audio - best audio tech in Melbourne BTW) explained to me how EL84s are very low powered, I think only 10-15 watts, but many companies set them up biased very hot, in excess of 15W per valve. We think this is what Fender is doing with the Bassbreakers. I remember mine would always be very hot to touch when it was running, and when it blew you get the exact crackling sound you guys had.

      @@dutchi15 Hi, this was a while ago. I replaced the BB with a Deluxe Reverb blackface reissue. Great amp. I did need to have tubes replaced in that a couple of times after 12-18 months use. Funny! My Bassbreaker 45 has been kicking since 2016 still sounds amazing! Love my Attenuator in my amp. Best setting is both channels pegged with a TS pedal in front of it for added kick to the balls. Used my regularly at gigs and at home 10 hours a week since November 2016 and the original tubes are still cooking!

      Marco Lalama I don't think the retailer has a lot of choice. Take apart just about any vintage 50's /60's guitar amp or hi fi amp and you see everything hand wired point to point . Things were made properly as standard , not just a load of IC's rushed together in a Chinese sweat shop.

    Regarding this 18/30 blowing I think it's a little premature to go trashing the model or Fender without more evidence.
    Haven't seen many complaints for Bassbreakers since the early 15s had that Send/Return grounding problem, now sorted.
    Folk do say that the 45 is pants until it's up loud.
    I was a little nonplussed at the lack of features on the bigger two, seems an odd design choice.
    I have a Bassbreaker 15 and I'm loving it.
    I got it to replace a Peavey Valveking II 20 Combo which kept blowing around the Send/Return.
    It's great around the house and up to moderate band practise/low volume gig.
    DI out is useful, though I prefer the sound from my attenuator array if I'm silent running.
    Some reckon the 007 sounds even better but for a good range of tones and FX options I reckon this is the winner from the Bassbreaker range.
    They're all so different it's a wonder that Fender gave them the same name.

    I've seen two videos of Fender amps blowing. I've seen two videos of Fender's new digital modeling amps that mimic their analog tube amps, squeal with the wrong note during reviews. Something is off with their program. Play at loud volume and bend up to a C note on the fourth string. See if it happens.

I plugged in to see what she was like and within 5 mins this amp did the exact same thing. We sent it back to Fender.... This and the tweeds from 2016 onward have reliability issues due to poor design, and the use of crap IC brand caps and inferior quality tubes/valves. It's well documented by amp techs with YT channels.

    Not the first I've heard off that (sometimes literally) blew up. Just watched a few tech vids pointing out that these things are unrepairable due to the chassis design. Apparently if they pop in warranty then Fender just send a new amp, out of warranty they won't repair them. You can't even clean/replace a crackly pot - they are that inaccessible. The bass breakers seem to have been designed to last a few years then need to be junked for even the most minor fault. I'm guessing Fender accountants think this is a good way of securing customer loyalty and guaranteeing repeat business.

    Cheap amp + upside down tubes = heat inside the amp, could be anything, I know i've read a lot of feedback of these suffering from solder problems around the tube sockets. Could have just been bad luck on a power tube, maybe the cathode follower tube that crapped out, don't know if these have a cathode follower, they should do but not sure.

      Anthony Cashero my issues effects loop and inherent noise when using the reverb. Using with all outboard effects in front of preamp okay. I use mine as a practice amp so no biggie

    I too would be curious to know what happened...I've heard some people say this is one of Fenders best sounding amps yet. I had high expectations. Not everything off an assembly line is going to be the same that's why there's a warranty. Unfortunately, this happens on video, I for one am not ready to start calling Fender Products junk because of one failure. Looking for the follow-up and I'm very interested in these new amps even in spite of this. But it does have me on hold for now.

      This amp is a marshall clone. It's got absolutely no Fender dna whatsoever.

      These Bassbreakers are getting a bad reputation, and Thomann had lots of them returned.

    Absolute bummer, but very entertaining, you are so look fun to watch, I feel like I'm hanging out with old friends!!! I remember doing something like that back in the 80s, except the tubes in the amp was smoking & the smell of burnt wire filled the room, you live & learn my friends, great video !!!!

    Haven't heard anything about those Fender amps having issues. Maybe just a production error. Would be cool to know what happens with it, see how Fender handles it.

    I have a 30r! Best sounding 1x12 combo I’ve ever heard but the tubes have already failed twice on me and I’ve only had it for a year 😅 something with the design of this amp makes those EL84s fail a lot :( No regrets though, just gonna keep replacing tubes and enjoying it
