Thank you... real simple and you helped a lot. Let me add my 3cts... when you put the foot back into the shaft, there are three items that need to align, 1 - the shifter and if you move it to forward, it's not an issue right away. 2- the water pipe has to align onto the rubber grommet and it's a pointed pipe, so get that first. 3- the drive shaft, make sure you got it going up the shaft hole because it does go into the outside of that hole, but not all the way in, and you'll think it's the water line or the gear rod that's stopping it. Do that and liskidislick you can align the shifter rod afterwards. Cheers
Yes, I found this to be excellent advice and made the process much easier when alighting all the pieces. One thing to know is that on my motor the apparatus that holds the shifter rod has a nut that is threaded into its starboard side which is responsible for tightening and holding the shifter rod. The nut on the starboard side only acts as a lock-nut so be careful which side you try to tighten first, otherwise you may break the bolt.
Hi i used your video to work on my Yamaha 8hp 2 stroke. Apparently the previous owner didn't ever service this, the impeller was disintegrated. the lower unit looks wet and nasty. do you have any videos on the lower housing disassembly?
Really ? That's it huh.. I asked the local marine service shop in my town what they would charge for this procedure, and they said $ 325.00...ouch !! Thank you very much ! you saved me a bunch of $ and I learned some of the must-do's that even the repair shop may overlook...
Generally this job is billed at 1 hour plus parts. That's pretty much true across the board for all engines inboard or outboard. This is generally not a hard job.
Hi awesome video i just got my lower unit off and replaced the impeller but now i cant get the lower unit back on i have tried playing with the forward and reverse to try and get the shaft and crank to line up but maybe im misisng something any tips or insight you have would be much appreciated
My Lower unit is stuck still and I got about and inch of space between the lower unit and the driveshaft housing I'm incredibly jealous that came out so easy.
I had real trouble getting the shaft back in. Turned out it was missing the hole doing it on its side so I turned the motor upside down and shone a torch in the leg to align the shaft properly. Went in first time.
Hey mate I just replaced some lower unit cells on my 1989 8hp and everything works like a dream now but I’m 12 so maybe I’m incorrect anyway cheers from Australia
Hello! We like your video very much. Very informative. We're in a process of changing an impeller on our Yamaha 8hp outboard right now and we noticed that the shifter shaft (the smaller rod with a rubber boot on it) is not engaging at the bottom of the lower unit... It seems like it "jumped out" of it's socket. It's impossible to see what is happening, but we can tell that there is no shifting happening. Can you tell us what can we do to re-engage that shifting rod? We would greatly appreciate.
Hello I broke a tilt lock plate, it's the llittle Y looking piece under the outboard. What does it do?? Is it needed and if so how do I put it back in?
Hola buenas tardes, tengo un problema cuando aflojo el tornillo de la palanca de cambio y los cuatro tornillos. No me deja sacar la cola, no sale. Me puedes decir cómo la puedo sacar. Muchas gracias
Will this help with the motor starting first go but won't run. Exact same motor. I can get it running playing with the choke but as soon as I go to no choke it stops....
Hi, Very good informative video thanks ! But I'd have a couple questions: 1- What kind of grease did you use ? I know it has to be marine grade, but ... 2- In the Impeller replacement kit with gaskets etc, there was a round rubber (was in the ground, just below the chair @ 3:41), where does it go exactly ? It wasn't shown in your video... thanks !
p.s. nevermind my 2nd question, I think I have found the info, it's the Water Seal Damper (647-44366-00-00) that should go on the water pump exit according to my research... (and I think, on my 2009 8HP, it is missing ... doh! 😏)
I have the '97 version of this Yamaha 8hp engine that needs a throttle replacement cable. I bought the cable (amazingly still available). Have you tried this before? Let me know either way.
Hello I did this last summer and my 6 horse was pumping water great again. The only problem was that I couldn't get the wear plate of because the impeller pin was maybe rusted to the shaft? Do you know how i can get the wear plate of when I'll replace the impeller next time?
you need to pull that pin out, or take off the driveshaft from the lu by pulling the bearing carrier out which is harder. Just take it somewere that they could just remove the pin for you.
I had this problem. The gear matching is very, very precise, and I hear metal on metal clunking when I try and don't have it lined up. You have to rotate the propeller in tiny increments while trying over and over until it will slip on.
I had two pump housing bolts back off! Flush with housing .mig welded nuts onto stubs ground back and rewelded a few times got cherry red each time let cool and they both came out
Thank you... real simple and you helped a lot.

We have the same engine on our sailing boat. I have it in the shed for an impeller change. Thanks for the clear explanation.
Very helpful video!
Made replacing my impeller super easy. And, I really impressed my wife with my outboard skills :-)

Great video. Thanks, to your video I will tackle this task myself on my Yamaha 8hp outboard. Keep up the great informational videos.
Take care
Very well done! Simple and easy to follow. Thanks Eric!!

That is crazy. I would charge 75$ max to do the job plus parts

Excellent video dude. So helpful! Thank you!
That was a big help for me! Thanks so much for doing this!

Well explained, nice job done young man, thank you
Great tutorial. Thank man!

Great vid Eric Thanks for sharing all this info it has helped me out mate
Your video was a great help. Thanks a lot.
Great job...better than the one posted by the Yamaha factory tech!
Had trouble getting lower unit off. I realize I loosened the wrong side of the very first thing you told me to unscrew.
Great video eric, i also would like to know what the part # is. the impeller, gaskets, etc and were to buy them at?
Can you do a video on re-sealing a lower unit on one of these 8hp Yamahas? I can supply the parts!

When did you discover that had left left the impeller cap off ?
Nice back ground music great video
Good video bro. Probably a obvious question but do you tighten the first bolt you loosened?
Thx!
Dude. Can you help me with something? I need a servicemanual for exact this motor...
While trying to align my lower unit to put back on this little pin fell out. Do you know what it came from? How or should I get it back in? Thx
Thanks for tutoring. I have a question: what are the dimensions for impeller? Thanks

Thanks , Nice video
Perfect you make a great Job 👍
Great video keep up the great work is there a website where you can buy the water pump kit?
Will this help with the motor starting first go but won't run. Exact same motor. I can get it running playing with the choke but as soon as I go to no choke it stops....
Sounds like you have an air leak
Anything go between the foot housing and stainless base plate? I.e. lube/adhesive?

Great video. One question, do you need to drain the gear oil before removing the lower unit?
No
Have you a vid on the gearbox removal and installation
night at the Roxbury! good video
Are you filming this next to a motorway...!?
Thanks.........well done..........very useful

This model 8hp outboard hasn't changed in 30 odd years and Yamaha is still selling them today
What are you using for the motor stand? I built my own from some youtube videos, but yours looks more compact.
cheers dude u the man
Great upload 👌🏽👍🏼 very helpful
Thank you sir✌️

Great video, where did you order the parts from?
How can I get more power on an 8Hp Yamaha, short?
Thanks from Russia
Great video! Can 6hp engine be converted to 8hp, and It yes, how? Thanks
Swap carburetor and drill out exhaust washer.
RUclips search “more power to Yamaha 6hp” for instructions on drilling exhaust
Great Video. Thanks.
I have taken out the lower unit, and installed the new impeller, but I can’t fit the lower unit back in. What do I do?

Do you have a video of impeller change on newer(2006-up)9.9 4 stroke Yamaha?
+J Mac sorry i do not but if you watch this video its basically the same process.
0:20 he takes that bolt and nut of what is the name of that piece mine broke on my motor
What type of Grease was that you used?
Anyone have the impeller part #?
Hey what is the part number for the impeller?
I cant get my drive shaft back in
Can I take my 2 stroke 6hp Yamaha to you?
Thanks! This was usefull
WHAT IS LOVE????baby dont hurt me dont hurt me no more WHAT IS LOVE????
Not 10 mm , 6 mm. In EU, 6 mm bolt, use af 10 mm soket.
esta muy bien pero el comentario agradeceria que tambien fuera español para poder entender
P.S What year is that motor in the video?
i believe that it was a 2000
Save my life!!!!
Lol the screw broke in 2 😂

Not so simple, the bolt underneath was a nightmare
You can make it yourself, just loook and learn from INPLIX .
Is it a bitch to get the rubber impelleller off the shaft? Or is it just me?
I can see why you edited a bit out when you putting it back together. Mine is being a bitch
