    I have a 1986 yamaha 6hp 2 stroke, replaced the spark plugs, thermostat, impeller, fuel filter which is regular maintenance stuff. Starts first pull, runs well, used often, great little motor for 33 years old.

      i got a old 6a and i got it out of sholder high grass. it was sitting there for 20 to 30 years the old owner said, i gave it a quick turn and the cylinder was free gave him 100 euro and went home with it, changed sparkplugs and put some 2 stroke oil in the cylinders while i tested everything after i was happy with it added some fuel and started straight aaway, smokey from all the oil i put in there so it wasent turning over dry but that burnt off and she runs so smooth now

    Thanks for posting this. I have the exact same outboard, and this helped a lot. the only thing i had to figure out on my own was the linkage that the shift shaft connected to.

    Nice motor! Should be driving holding with your left hand, wouldn't have to twist your body .

      Back when they were new it was around $800. No clue what the value is now days. My brother recently sold the motor to a friend of ours for $500.

    I've been trying to get the bottom to go back in for an hour. And that's the only thing in the video that was skipped. Everything is lined up, and I'm spinning the prop to let the splines line up, but no success.

    • @markf37talon
      @markf37talon Год назад +1

      SOLVED! There is a tube the the main shaft can easily miss. While lining up the shifter shaft the main shaft was missing the tube.
      In case somebody else is dealing with this:
      I turned the motor upside-down, and used a phone flashlight to pear into the exaust side of the houseing. The right spot would shine light onto the the main shaft and its tube. While keeping the main shaft alighned, bend the shift shaft to align with its own hole.

    • @OldCarAlley
      @OldCarAlley  Год назад +1

      @@markf37talon It was impossible to show how to reinstall it with the camera. Yes you need to line up everything, not just the shaft. They can be a bit of fuss. I am a marine mechanic, so to me it's no big deal for me.... but for someone that has never done one, yes it can be a challenge. Glad you got it together ok.

    can you tell me the exact model # of this motor? i have one that looks identical, & when i try searching “1985 yamaha 6hp outboard”...the websites don’t show an available 6hp for the 1985 year. also, my motor doesn’t have the serial # plate. that’s why i’m asking. it would be much appreciated!!!

      They usual go on if there in the correct position. Just make sure is pumping water to the power head.... most have a little tube attaching to the top of the block, that go threw the lower cowl. It shoots a good stream of water when pumping properly.

    this is old but the carb should really be cleaned you never know what junk accumulated after all those years even brand new. factory ran them with fuel. the fact it took so long to start and stalled a couple times tells me the idle circuit is a bit gummy. not clogged, but some varnish. not good for a brand new 2 stroke!

    • @OldCarAlley
      @OldCarAlley  3 месяца назад +1

      That outboard has been running flawlessly for many years now, so I don't think there was any crud in the carb.
