DIY Exercise Bike For Under $50

- Those excercise bike stands can be expensive...even $100s of dollars. I viewed other DIY bike excercise stands and started pulling together some ideas for making it cheap, easy to do, easy to maintain, parts needed to be practical for other purposes, and safety! We tackled assembling the bike as a family project. ruclips.net/user/postUgkxzg0clhbtRf2gGxPkVETFKJJKGqdsorQu The package is heavy, but I have 2 teen boys that were able to move it. The written instructions were great- we didn't need to watch the videos, but it was good knowing that the option was there if we needed it. After we were able to get it set up, the boys each rode 3 miles and I rode 8 and the bike stayed quiet. The display is easy to reset, and you can put it on whichever setting you are using (time, distance, calories, etc). I will say that my butt is a little sore from the seat, but that could be because I haven't rode in a while. While it is comfortable for me, it was not comfortable with the seat position for my friend (could not move the seat back far enough and he slightly looked like a kid riding a tricycle that he had outgrown). He also said that the seat hurt his manly parts. We are going to look for a different seat that will be compatible with this bike for him.I did purchase the Wahoo Cadence sensor and strapped it to the crank of one of the pedals. This will sync with my Apple Watch, iPhone and will import data in to my Health app. Wahoo does have other sensors available other than cadence. I can also keep either my phone or my iPad on the display and they both feel pretty secure.
Thanks for viewing and suggesting an alternative. Yes, I saw the same fitness bike as well at Walmart and Target for over $300. That is one of the reasons I posted this alternative DIY upgrade to a bike for less than $50. By the way, the DIY bike in this video is still working 3-years later. No parts needed changing yet...including rear brake pads!
be careful some pegs will bend under too much load over a long period to counter this make sure the jacks are as close as they can be to the bike

Marvelous, marvelous!! I'm nearly seventy and this idea is what I'm looking for. So inefficient (or cheap) and still get my exercise (no riding on the streets where crazy people are). Kept on looking for something on YT and found it useful. Probably might find jack stands wee bit less at flea market 's (maybe) but anyway much thanks for the wonderful idea. Planted in my head!!
Arrived as expected with all parts intact, also included two hex keys for assembly. ruclips.net/user/postUgkxwOUUBdw8-88Iu4QnQS7q6b2NwZkHiYVl Had to adjust mine slightly to fit my bike, this was easy enough with instructions. I bought it to train with my track bike and found it to have resistance similar to climbing a slight gradient. Takes a while to learn to balance but there is plenty of guidance to help on the internet. Edit: There was more resistance at lower speeds because of the number of contact points but at higher speeds it is much easier as you don’t have to contend with drag.

I found your video looking for diy excercise bike stands, did some digging in the comments, today I bought the jack stands (2T), new foot pegs for 26'' wheel bike and put them all together! It worked like a charm!!! (I used zip-tie for my setting) Such a creative idea for bikes that are used as clothes' hangers :D Thank you again !

Such a great idea! It takes 5 minutes to put together. I bought everything at Wallmart including the pegs. It works perfectly and it's very stable! The zip ties create a good, adjustable resistance. Thank you very much!!! I enjoyed your sense of humor. Now I am going to buy a bike tablet holder and I am all set, I have no excuses for not exercising :-)

This bike was really easy to assemble ruclips.net/user/postUgkxMesz3KOGEmwmvyKQfLfrRSUXLFzfVHZA and required very few adjustments out of the box. The wheels did not require any truing/adjustments. The frame had some small scratches, but nothing major.I did replace the seat though - the seat it came with was very uncomfortable. The tires need to be re-inflated every 4-5 days, but this appears to be quite common for the narrow 700x25 tires.Overall, in my opinion, this bike looks and rides like a much more expensive bike.

1) Gripper to tighten BMX Pegs
MINUS the Zip ties, & Rubber bands.

Woods way cheaper if u dont have jack stands tho. But the stands might come in handy later i suppose.
If you have a quick release spindle I’m thinking it needs to be swapped out for a different one in order to add the pegs?

another option for heavier resistance is to tighten the inner bearings of the rear wheel. As a last resort, we can only slightly wear the internal ball bearings, which we replace with new ones that cost a few cents.

Also, the rear wheel is what needs to be jacked up...it's the wheel that moves when pedaling. To create resistance >>> use a combination of changing gears (minor effect since it is off the ground) and using the rear bike brake with your hand or with a zip tie as shown in the video. You can vary the tightness of the zip tie to change the resistance.

Just wondering did anybody do this a couple of years ago? Wanted to know how the bike was holding up from a durability standpoint and also holding the weight of the person as far as sturdiness

Is there a way to attach a speedometer / bike computer to the rear tire since it is the only moving part? Most bike cables seem to be long enough for the front wheel hook up.

Hollly Crapzilla there Batman...I was trying to find an Indoor Bicycle Trainer for 24" Bike... Nothing... Not even on Amazon. I could buy one for a 26 - 28" bike, then modify it... Sheesh! Not my first choice. I love DIY projects and found yours... I've already got the Jack Stands and all of the tools. All I needed were the Pegs and a Stabilizer... Very fun idea! The concern using the brakes as resistance, however, is not in wearing out the cheaply replaced brake pads, it's in wearing out or damaging the rims. Wheels are much more expensive to replace than tires.
You bring up a fair concern. Here is the good news...my wife is still using the bike since the video first came out. Rims are still OK, and the brake pads still don't need replacing.

that is alot of stress weight on back axle wheel nuts. what happen when those break off?
Good question. I talked to someone at a bike shop and fortunately it seems that an average ladies adult bike can hold a weight of 300 pounds and the weight is distributed between the two wheels. As far as the rear axle and threaded bolt, apparently it is hardened and pegs do screw in pretty far without worries of snapping a peg or snapping the threaded bolt. Since there is no jumping on the pegs and no bouncing of the bike due to terraine (motionless in training bike mode)...he said there shouldn't be an issue. Thanks for comment.

Hmmm...interesting question. To be honest, I don't see why it wouldn't work. In fact, you may not even need the bike pegs...plenty of space and a bar between the 2 rear tires to put the jack stands under. It would be a cool video to make too :)
I went out and checked my bike and there’s no way to connect the clips that you got from Amazon to the rear tire. The mechanism for both tires are two quick release skewers. So there’s not enough bolt to which I can attach the clips that will rest on the floor jacks. Do you have any ideas for a workaround? Thanks, Sean...

I like the concept. Couple of questions....1. what purpose does the front wheel stabilizer serve 2. Why do you need resistance on the brakes if you have the gears set higher?
Cool questions. 1. Stabilizer to keep the wheel from angling off on it's own while using the bike hands free. Also, kind of looks cool with stabilizer at the front when not in use. :). 2. It does help to a certain point having the gears set higher...but since the rear tire is off the ground and adding a bit of resistance with the brakes seems to take the workout up a notch.

Ok I have a one speed cruiser bicycle. There are no gears for resistance and as you know those bikes have a foot break. Is this idea only good for other type bikes? Thanks
Thx for watching video. You bring up a good point. Yes, this idea will only work on bikes with hand brakes. I tried this idea without using the handbrake and there is very little resistance.
After some further thought...the only idea I could come up with is adding weight to the rear tire. Example would be to secure 5 lbs weight disks (flat circular w/hole in middle) with zip ties... between the spokes of the rear tire...maybe 4 or 5 with equal distance between them. Just a crazy thought.

Thanks for comment/question. To be honest, I just don't know. If a clip lock can be replaced/interchanged with a nut bolt...then I lean towards yes. However, I would probably look at owners manual or contact manufacturer. The question I would ask them is: "Can rear bike pegs be installed on my bike?". If they say yes...then you can move forward with this posted DIY exercise bike idea. I hope this helps.

Just discovered this vid. Love the solution. I weigh over 400lbs and cant find a bike stand that can support my weight. This seems like an wwesome solution, except for the bike pegs being a point of fault due to my weight.

Hi. Yes, it should work with kids bikes as well. The bike pegs will fit. The jack stands are height adjustable as well.
Good DIY. Using jack stands gives stability but also increases the cost. May be a stand made from metal pipes may make it cheaper. On the other hand, I found a bike pedal exerciser for $40. Now I am wondering if it is worth doing any DIY at all :)
I bought all of the stuff, and then grabbed my bike out of the basement, to set it up.
Unfortunately my bike has a quick release for the back tire.. so this method does not work at all. I was so excited to do this, and save money.
This is definitely a great idea, but unfortunately will not work for all bikes.

How much weight can 2 tons jack stand take?
2000 pounds each. I bought the 3-ton jack stands because it was only $5 more and if I ever needed to use them on an SUV...I'm covered.

Instead of the brake, use a bike roller( they are used to service motorcycles) placed under the rear wheel. It makes the same noise as a cycle trainer

Good question. I tried it but with the rear tire off the ground the resistance was minor.

Yes, definately! The way they are designed with its legs extendeding outwards makes them stable. Then, the stands are even more stable when weight is added (sitting on bike).

Lol...good catch. We bought 3 assembled Schwinn bikes from a retail store about 10 years ago for Christmas. I didn't notice the reversed fork until this video was made. The other two bikes are correct. This means the bike was used like this over a 10 year period. Embarrassing...yes. Maybe for now I'll try to get away with saying that it is a status symbol? :)

Actually, thats a great question! I asked my wife (since she has been using it regulary since June 2020)...and she positively says no plastic or rubber burning smell. I did check out the wear on the break pads and found them to be minimal...so that means replacement is far and between for them. Thanks for your post!
Definitely the best stationary bike hack I've seen. But why can't you create resistance by increasing the gears on the bike? Full disclosure, I'm brand new (after several decades) to biking again. Thanks very much for the video!
Thanks for watching. By the way, great question. I did try it with different gear settings and the change in resistance was minimal. Probably due to rear tire being off ground. Also, I decided not to go the route of creating a rollers system for the rear tire to spin on.

Good question. I put this together in May, 2020. My wife is still using the setup today...still the same brake pads too :)

I would enhance this "build" with fiber pads. Just grind the rubber off and glue fiber pads you can cut to any shape. Then use oil to get more resolution with brakes.
All one should require is to elevate the frame and used zip ties to secure it to the blocks.
