Man rescues mom during Hurricane Ian

- In one photo, Johnny Lauder’s 86-year-old mother is in her Florida home, submerged nearly to her shoulders in black murky water, staring straight at the camera, mouth open.
In another, she lies just above the waterline on a table, wrapped in sheets to keep warm. In yet another, she's being pushed through the water in a wheelchair, her rescue nearly complete.
The photos were taken after Hurricane Ian made landfall last Wednesday, bringing a powerful storm surge and 150 mph (241 kph) winds. They tell the story of Lauder’s journey to save his mother, Karen Lauder, from the home she refused to leave, despite the family’s pleading.
That's real love for his mother.💝
Real love would have been not letting her stay there alone and then going to help after the water got up to his window. Real love would have been if he rushed right over instead of making sure to move slow and frame up his video for the movie. Real love would have been getting her out of the water as soon as possible instead of taking a pic and then a selfie with her still in neck deep water.
Real love wouldn't have had video documentation.
@@frey8725 thank you Frey!!! The son is no hero ! A hero would have picked the mom up, and put her in a car to evacuate!
@@frey8725 uhm I think you missed the part which says she refused to leave.
@@robaguilar4978 If my one-legged, wheelchair-bound elderly mother refused to leave when we were told storm surge could get up to 16 feet, I'd be able to convince her. If not, the family would stay with her. And I DEFINITELY wouldn't wait until the water got up to my window before calmly and slowly going after her.
Did you miss the part where he took the time to make sure he was recording video and moving slow enough to keep himself framed up? His hat was even dry and he slowly made his way there. Did you also miss the part where he stopped to take a picture of her through the window? Did you miss the part where he was so concerned about hypothermia that he took the time to take a selfie with her in neck deep water before getting her out of the water?
The guy's not a hero. He's a glory hog.
@@frey8725 🤔..

Men who dont think about evaccuating their mother before hand.
@@robbieogle8622 I think that they said that the mom did want to leave the house. So yes my comment stands.
There are many reasons people are unable to leave for an evacuation and you shouldn't judge them if you don't know there situation. 🤡
@@justdorcas3875 name one...
@@robbieogle8622 the mother refused to leave
If this isn't heroism & love, I don't know what else.
Love is not leaving your one-legged, wheelchair-bound mother alone when you were told how high the storm surge would be. Love is not waiting until the water gets up to your window before you decide to go get your mom who can't stand up higher than the water. Love is not spending the time to get your camera perfectly framed and moving slow to make sure you don;t get your camera or hat wet when going to save your mom. Love is not stopping to take a picture of her before going inside. Love is not taking a selfie with her in the water while you claim to be worried about hypothermia.
A hero is someone who doesn't stop to think about recording video or someone who's more concerned about getting his hat wet than moving fast through the water to save someone. If he were a real hero, we would have no video evidence of any of this.

How about getting your mom out of the water BEFORE you take out the camera?
Older people are so stubborn and then they want to be saved at the last minute. This woman is lucky her son is still alive.
They're just stuck in their ways, you just save them anyways.

Gosh ease up she's 84 years old. I would swim a mile in the same situation just to see my grandma again. She is long gone and I still miss her. Hug your loved ones, tomorrow is promised to no one.
So not only did he managed to save his mom but he managed to film it all and contact the news. What he didn’t managed to do was bring his mom over before the storm. He even managed to get one last photo before he moved her to safety.
Exactly, I feel like he partly did it for the video sadly.
he even somehow didn’t get any water into his own home when he opened his window and jumped out and sprang into action when said it was chest high. Not one drop came in. He also managed to swim without getting any water on his face or his perfectly placed hat, as he stopped and took selfies, not knowing if his mother had taken her last breath or not, because as he said, when It got to her navel that’s when he decided oh I should go and get her now, wow!!
If she was only 4 blocks away, then why wasn’t she at her sons house in the first place!? Glad to know they’re safe.

Ok but why the hell did he allow his one legged 84 year old mother to ride out a hurricane alone in her one story home to begin with?! This whole scenario is incredibly stupid.
It seems staged.
Exactly 💯
I agree totally!
Very
Unfortunately this is quite common. During Hurricane Katrina many elderly refused to leave in spite of pleas from family members. A woman who lived a few blocks from my Mom’s house refused to leave. She told her family she’d do a jig if water got into her house. She didn’t survive. :-(
As a fellow SW Floridian go to a shelter! I am happy you saved your mom and your family. Please evacuate next time!
Exactly. Heroic stories are great but they can be avoided. Don't remain in your home when a powerful hurricane is coming. Take your pet's and elderly parent's with you.
Everyone always says, "next time I will evacuate". But sadly many people cannot learn from the previous people that say that
Agree! Touching story but please do not ignore the warnings
@@JT89877 ok. so were just trying to discredit this guy now????? fuck off with that negativity. go help somebody you jackass

@Judith G- AGREE 💯 💜
Naw! I disagree! Let's ignore all orders to evacuate, and then set up Go Fund Me pages and yell for any passersby to come over and risk THEIR OWN LIVES just to try to save us out of compassion.....or maybe guilt🤔. That's more adventurous and profitable than to just evacuate, right?👍
In another news story… it was reported that mom refused to leave. Sometimes you can’t make an elderly person do something they don’t want to do.
Yes people are morrons if your told to evacuated you do that
And thanks for all the video you took time to record and the selfie you took when you were so concerned about hypothermia. And thanks for waiting until the water got waist deep before going to check on her.
Her refusing to leave could've cost her son his life. Imagine that guilt...
my thoughts too! Hopefully she learned her lesson to lesson next time someone says evacuate. Not worth the risk!
It almost cost her, her own life considering her son waited until the water got up to his window before going to check on her and then he loved slow while recording video.
@@jacquelinekovacs4083 There were no evacuations called in Naples. This storm was full of last minute surprises.
@@ellengrace4609 There were, but they were late.
"The city of Naples declared a local state of emergency at noon Tuesday. It was at a "Level 1 activation," the highest level of storm preparation.
Zone A includes most of Naples, so the city piggybacked on the mandatory evacuation order.
The city activated its own Emergency Operations Center at 5 p.m. tonight. It advised residents to "run from water and hide from wind."
The issue I have with this story, though, is the fact that this guys left his crippled, elderly mother alone and didn't think to go get her until the water was up to his window. If she would have fallen over, she would have been dead.
Then, he made sue to go slow and record it all. Made sure his hat stayed dry and he was perfectly in frame the whole time. Then he stopped to take a picture of his mom when she was neck deep in water and, when he claimed that he was concerned about hypothermia, he took the time to take a selfie with her before getting her out of the water.
I honor 🎖 this man. So many forgot their parents. Many left behind died. So happy she knows she is loved and was safe.

@@justdorcas3875 So you just give up and let them stay where they are? I don't think so. He is a cop so knows better. Also, he was 4 blocks away, why not invite her to his place? Or stay with her? Whole thing seems strange and fishy

This breaks my heart because a man in argentina killed both of his parents a month ago, apparently he wanted to keep all of the money for himself, and this story is all of the opposite because this heroic man risked his own life to save his mother. No doubt there's real love in his heart. Blessings to everyone!
I'm thinking, he was trying to get her killed. Why else would he have waited until the water got so high before going to check on her? Plus, he moved very slowly. He probably recorded it so he couldn't get arrested for murder when he found her floating face down in the water. But... Since she was alive, he went with the hero-route.
Love you too former chicagoan you go. I love what you did you are a hero in my heart
A wonderful son he is.
I'm really glad he got to her safely but the fact she refused to leave and they didn't make her leave sooner is crazy to me.
I agree but she’s an adult, can’t really make her. Then she’ll probably claims he was “assaulted”.
I was reading a lot of stories of Floridians passing away and I wondered in general why they refused to leave. One woman actually admitted she made a mistake by staying. She felt that the last one wasn't a big deal so she refused to leave. This is Florida. They always get hit. They should not take the risk.

That's what happens when you don't evacuate. you put people in danger
Get real people, the guy was wearing a superhero batman shirt during the interview, then had the cliche quip, I wasn't batman, but aquaman that day. Everything here panders to a media coverage pickup. Get real.
Lastly, I won't disagree that the son went to the mother during the flooding. Agreements should be made, why was the mother left alone at her house only 4 blocks away? However, here's where I think bs comes to play. Son sets off without any flotation device, finds life jackect and boat float mat(takes picture from a far). Come across random kayak(takes picture again).
this literally brings tears to my eyes. wow such a hero ❤️
His mother 4 blocks away?!? And they decided when facing a natural event to spend it separately. I dont understand some families smh 🤦
Total BS or total ignorance. Take ur pick. The woman had one leg based on the coverage.

Who leaves their disabled mother alone during a hurricane and records it?
Obnoxious!
Haven't you watch the video to show that the mother refuse to evacuate before the hurricane, and when hurricane hit and thing got worse, her house was flooded, and sons come and rescue her from her flood due to her stubbornness, and the people send her to health facility to get treatment. If she learned to listen then her son and grandson wouldn't risk their life for her. She should be thankful she is alive and her son is alive to rescue her, that what you need to look at. And the video could be chance of the mother being rescue and treated, and to share to the world to show what kindness and consideration means.
