Cool video man, the alvey side cast reel you refer to is a national treasure and have been around for over 100 years here, I’m so pleased that people in the US are starting to enjoy them too, the best thing about them is they are completely bomb proof, you’ll likely pass them onto your grand kids and theirs after. I noticed you mentioned the need for a good swivel, line twist is one of the few gripes people have with the reels but there are a few tricks you can use to minimise it, one is properly feeding your line onto the spool so it’s coming on the same way it’s going off, another is letting your line spin out for a while bewteen casts and of course quality swivels in your rig are essential.

Good work. I'm in Perth WA, and we use this rig as well as a paternoster version as our go to - we put a sturdy snap swivel to the gangs, so we can use whatever size hooks suit the size of sardines or Mulies as we call them here. I find most people shy away from this frig because they are forced to fish it actively if there's any significant swell / wave action. If you use it at the right times in hand you can catch more than using other methods.

Forgot to mention I have a vid of the rig I use for Tailor on my channel, that rig gets used with gangs, wire traces with gangs, and also straight mono/flouro leaders with single/ double/ triple snelled hooks. Tight lines !

Appreciate the post and the information you shared. Yes, this rig is really under appreciated here in the US for use with bluefish (tailor). Most people just buy the mullet rigs here and not think too much about other options. My biggest problem with the mullet rig is that a surf fisherman looses way too may blues (tailor, lol) when the fish bites higher up on the rig. Your point about having to actively fish this rig during swell and wave action is spot on. Working this rig in a heavy surf is great because you can move it around like a slow retrieving sinking plug while the bait gives off it's scent into the water, something plugs can't typically do else you grease them up with scent oil. Thanks again and good luck on your future outtings!
