I just bought this 2020 model yesterday; black on black. There is nothing I don’t like about it. I’m 62 years old and hands r getting somewhat arthritic after playing for 40 years, and I will say I have no doubts about playing this bass on stage. I have an American standard p bass and a Mike Dirnt sig that’s pretty old, but I really love this Jag as well. Just had to set it up. Very nice Visio. Thanks for that.

Thanks for: A) Using a drum machine; and B) Playing an actual bass line (That may sound like a strange comment, but I have no idea what some of the reviewers on RUclips consider to be music or what they do on an actual gig, but the godawful "cram as many notes in at a varying tempos, ooh look at me I'm redefining music as you know it, using techniques that come in handy.....er, never" approach just makes me hit the home button). Now I have a pretty good idea of what if would sound like in a band setting, which is what most of us would be buying it for. Keep it up!

Charles Parish always a bit of Jamerson in my playing, particularly in a groove of this style, good spot! This kind of runs have almost become bread and butter in what I do, hard to resist them! T

Was tabbing out the Glastonbury 2015 version of Pictures of Lily by The Who with Pino on bass and he drops in a couple of Jamerson licks (Around 0:52 on the G before the chorus there's a lick from the intro to Reach Out, I'll Be There). I'm telling you as my guitar player mates just look at me and shrug when I tell them. Philistines :-D

Thanks for showing the pickup combinations. I bought the previous (active) version of this Jaguar bass, and got rid of the active circuit altogether, replaced the P-pickup with a hotter Tonerider and swapped the tuners for better ones. Love it, now.

Bought this bass thanks too your video. It is beautiful build quality and I love the size and feel. Both large and with the expected beefiness, but also small with the 32" scale. I dig the narrowness and it makes cover those first four frets much more comfortably than a full scale P/J. For me it was going to be Jaguar or Mustang.I'm glad I chose the Jaguar.

I love that tone you got playing with a pick, with both pups on full, and the tone rolled all the way off at the bridge. Great rock tone. Would soak up distortion great.

Thank you for the in depth review. I purchased the Squier CV Jag bass a few days ago, mostly as a back-up to my P Bass. I suppose the "new" will wear off soon but, so far, I'm having a difficult time putting the Jag back on its stand. My P Bass be looking at me like, "What the hell, man? I thought we were partners." The Jag is just so much fun to play!
Love the Jag! It’s so much fun! Being that little bit easier physically, makes a big difference in overall fell!

@@TylerSpicer the 2012 VM Jaguar Bass was 34” with stacked pots but the black tone ring clicked into set positions, whilst the volume was free. Are the tone pots free moving on the 2020 32” CV?

I have a squier jaguar and i like i got it like 2 days ago for christmas but i. Have played it alot since i got it but i like it it looks nice snd sound incredible highly reccomend

Fantastic demo all around. The tour of pup selection-tones alone is 5-star. I'm not a fan of pointing out the obvious: color and other clearly visible features, but your insight into the hilights and foibles is indispensable. Already chose this and awaiting delivery as I'm a guitar player feeling that compulsion (and hopefully resisting the temptation to play it like a guitar player). Chose it specifically for that happy middle scale to remind me I'm not playing a guitar, but comfortable enough not to be a back n forth shock. Planned upgrades already inthe works, but your insight saved me a bit on the bridge. Will give it a chance but upgrading the pups and electronics, as well as tuning machines. Didn't know it had a bone nut (???) but you maybe saved me there too. Cheers!

Thanks for this review! I have a few 32 scale Japanese Squiers and they are among my best instruments tonally but a little temperamental. I've been sending emails around trying to get people interested in a 32 with a P/J config for probably two years. I think this happened without any knowledge of that even though I work with a high-profile Fender artist, but either way I'm VERY happy to see it happen!
That is one high profile Fender artist indeed - nice gig! This bass has got me sold on 32” basses as a very viable option. I wish they were more broadly available and used! T

@@Luminectar Hey, wow, old comment alert. Well, I had to do a lot of work on them to make them useable. I had a friend heat treat their necks and then I had Maurilio Mina at Nordstrand shape the frets and do full pocket neck shims, plus normal setup work. Then I had trouble with them intonating properly so I've replaced the original bridges with Hipshot Vintage units and everything is much more stable and predictable. It was a lot, but not necessarily more than you'd expect to do to any older instrument that had gotten out of shape over time. I love those basses and will never sell them, so it was worth it! I played one of them almost exclusively on the latest J5 album, but I did also play the Squier CV Jaguar on our version of How High the Moon, with the solo on the MIJ Squier. The CV is also a keeper! I plan to replace the bridge pickup with something noise cancelling and that's about it. I literally got it out of the box and recorded a song with it for someone that evening and they chose it over the two Fenders I'd also recorded! Just to take the conversation full-circle to the instrument in this video.

I would probably change out the pickups, but thats all I'd like to really have to do. I am a bit confused, did you mean the CV Jaguar required a lot of work? Or that The Jag was a solid bass and you just desire to change the jazz pick up? I would like to check out your music!
Just got mine to replace my Fender Modern Player Telecaster Bass (wanted to try a medium scale and wasn't over the moon with the pickups or weight) and it's gorgeous. However, the one main detraction is that there was a bit of a flub when routing out the cavity for the j-pickup and I have a healthy 1/8" space where the wiring is clearly visible (I have a few things in mind to fix/hide this when I swap out the pickups). Of course I only notice it when I go looking for it, and although it bothers me I won't be returning it as I haven't seen a bass in this price range with a fingerboard with such lovely figuring.

Very thorough review. I had this bass a long time ago in black and hastily got rid of it, may get it again.
Brilliant bass for the money - the only minor niggle I have with it is the shiny neck and some of the old school finish.
I'd love to see them do a Contemporary series version of this bass keeping the PJ pickup config
I don't like shiny glossy necks too, but successfully took the finish off some of my bass necks' using sand paper... on a cheap bass it won't harm its value that much. I think there was a tutorial by Galeazzo Frudua, Italian great luthier about sanding off necks' finish
I have noticed the difference in quality, especially more in the feel of the necks, now that I've moved "up" to two Fender Player Series Basses, over my two previous Squier Basses...

Hi Tyler, really enjoying the channel. Thanks for putting out such great content. I'm looking for something with split coil pick ups but that isnt a P bass (I don't get on with the necks). Between this and a mustang, which would you say provides the most low end? I've compared mustangs and P basses in shops - the mustangs always seemed to be lacking something in the lower frequencies. Thanks again!
This bass is great for beginners. I started playing this a while back and I gotta say, it is awesome the color is nice, and I love the 70s neck. Overall: 5 Stars

Looks and sounds to be a great bass for anyone. Even experienced players...
I like that they went back to the concentric knob setup but I wish it also had a Jaguar control plate. (Like the original "Vintage Modified" jaguar basses had.) Other than that it looks pretty killer and sounds good as well. (Yours has a very nice "3-tone" burst. Alot of the ones I've seen for sale on Reverb look more like a "2-tone" burst.)
Tommy's Timeless Treasures i love the concentric knobs and I was really impressed with the burst on this one! It would be cool to have the jag control plate but I can see why it doesn’t have it, with an eye to cost. Thank I think it’s a great sounding bass, no doubt! T

Love 70s jazz necks. I think Squire is 1.6 nut on that one but not sure. I got the Gettylee signature Jazz because its a 1.5 thinnest i have seen. Love it. Great video sir.

Awesome and informative! It should be mentioned though that Indian Laurel isn't being used simply because its a "cheaper wood" for the fingerboard. Rosewood had been heavily depleted in the wild and is now endangered. It's against the law to use it the way it was used before, and Indian Laurel and Pau Ferro seem to be the two most popular replacements for it.

Kinda funny I ordered this bass from my local music store, but couldn't find any videos to this model. And now I see the first review. I now own it for less than 24 h and I have to say I love it. The only thing which was not so good was the high action,but that's up to personal preference. By the way I have this Model in all black.

@@panchaviaras2935 I mean the gap between the fretboard and the strings is a bit high due to a slight neck curvature but this is fixable
I have the 30" Jaguar SS, which is no longer made. Love It! If I hadn't snagged that one, this 32" would be my choice. Love the sound of this one with 0% tone, bridge pickup only.

Is the headstock and body smaller than a full size Jag? I remember the medium scale J basses from Japan were 7/8 of a standard.
I'm trying to decide between this Squier CV Jag and the Squier CV 60s Precision to buy as a second bass (I have a Dingwall ABZ6). Which one would you pick?

I love the Jag, mostly for its unique scale length and the pickup combination (I love a PJ!). It will also make a nice change to the size of the Dingwall (I’m an ex ABZ4, AB1 5 and AB2 5 owner) and give you a very different tonal palette.
I definitely think a Cali video needs to be done, but whether people will hear the nuance over YT remains to be seen. Let me have a think about the best way I could demo it! T

What's the difference with the vintage modified Jaguar bass? Is there a difference except the bass boost?
I wanted to buy the vintage modified but I read that the bass boost really sucks on it, so I'd like to know if this bass is a good alternative (I like the mix of the P/J pickups!) Thanks :D
No problem! Which version of the vintage modified were you looking at? The SS is short scale (30”) and the normal vintage modified is 34” scale I believe! So you’re going to get a very different feel between them. I really liked this Jaguar and I think it’s a great balance between playability and tone! T

You can buy short-scale flatwounds, no problem. La Bella are *the* classic flatwound sound, so whilst they’re expensive, I’d just start and finish there! T
Get La Bella MEDIUM scale flatwound strings. Deep Talking Bass set. Ball end to nut length of the wound portion is critical.

Another very useful review, Tyler. I have been thinking of purchasing a short-scale bass particularly for situations when I have to play standing up. The 32" scale and the sound of this bass is intriguing. I don't know if you still have this bass or not, but I'm wondering how well balanced it is when you play standing up and have this bass hanging on your shoulder. I am wondering about neck dive. Years ago I had a Fender Jazz, but only kept it about a month, because every time I wanted to play it, the headstock wanted to hit the floor. Can you comment on whether this Squier CV Jaguar is well balanced or not?
Hi John! Thank you for the kind words and supporting the channel! It’s well balanced. I’ve really enjoyed having it around (it’s still here in lieu of lockdown starting after I shout the video) and it sits happily on a strap, no real sign of neck dive (even with a fairly slippy strap!). The medium scale definitely helps with balance and neck dive being that the weight of the headstock isn’t so far out. T

Thank you! Very much appreciated! I think they're better than I've experienced with most Squier tuners - though the lower tension from the Medium scale might be helping that, in part. Not essential to replace, but recommended if you're gonna be gigging the bass regularly and hard, I'd suggest! T

What do you think of the 2006 Fender Jags?
Nice looking bass. I have the Squier Jaguar Vintage Modified in 34 scale. It has the four knobs and it's made out of Basswood. I've had it for years and it's one of my favorite basses I have owned.
I’d not encountered Jaguars before but this guy has really got me thinking I’ve been missing out! Basswood is usually more to my taste being a pretty straight swap for alder so I’m sure I’d dig your Jag! T

No problem! It's a little lighter than the Ps in my experience, but wouldn't class it as lightweight. More medium! that can vary from bass to bass though of course. T
Does this sound much different than an actual P bass or the play series jaguar bass? I really want it.
I planned on getting an American jazz bass at the beginning of next year( tax time in amurica 😉) to complete my fender collection,(one from each country they manufactur in) but I might just grab one of these instead,, and maybe a new amp ,idk,I DO know the more I see of this bass the more I want one, stack knobs and a REAL BONE on a cheap bass,that's killer, maybe I'll buy that one of these then get some real fender pickups to mod it🤔🤔🤔 now it's a toss up either a jag or a Jino signature jazz,( there's a fender you should check out!)
Would you pick this bass or the Fender Mustang PJ Bass for a guitar player looking to get into bass?
I really like this, but the mustang PJ would be a little higher quality and the shorter scale is probably more comfortable as a guitarist. T
Sorry, forgot to answer your question. My favorite tones were the P pickup with tone at 100%, both fingerstyle and picked.
It’s a classic tone - hard to go wrong!

Hey great video!! I’ve owned this exact bass for about a month now and love it. But I’m not sure if my tone knobs are working because I notice zero difference in sound when I miss with the tone. Was wondering if you were having this problem as well or mine is just defective. I ordered mine brand new btw, please help
Thank you! That doesn’t sound right. Are you sure they’re attached correctly? It could be that the outside is spinning but not moving the capacitor with it. There are a couple of little screws on the sides of the knobs, you just need to tighten those! T

iVelocity they should just be on the sides of the knobs. (The black bits for the tones and silver for the volume).
Hey! I know this comment is a bit old now, but I was hoping you could update me on the issue.
I had the exact same problem with the tone knobs not seeming to do anything. Tried it on a couple of different amps, but no change. I sent it back to the shop. They said that it's working as expected, but refunded me anyways. I really fell in love with the feel of the bass, so I'm wondering if you managed to figure out a solution or cause to the issue that I could try, or if I should look for something else.
@@EowielParallel hey friend! I still own the bass and can say i still love it just as much as when I bought it! Yeah weirdly I keep moving around the knobs and they eventually started working! I was concerned at first but they work perfectly fine now! Maybe just keep moving the knobs around!
Any long term impressions on this?
I ordered this bass but I thought it had too little "bass" in it (somehow especially the open E string sounded weird to me). Could be just my particular one, but I definitely prefer the mustang for the real short scale sound. It has much more character and depth imo.
superstitiouspotato did you check the break angle of the strings over the bridge and past the nut on the E string? I’ve had that on a few occasions and is generally the source whenever I’ve had a ‘weird’ sounding string! T
@@TylerSpicer I did not, what is the break angle about? Haven't heard of this before
It’s the point at which the strings cross the bridge saddle and nut, and the angle of the string thereafter - hence break angle. In order to fix this you need to push down on the string as close to the bridge as possible. You then need to do the same, pushing the string down between the nut and tuner. If it’s not then sorted, you need to re-wrap the string on the tuner, until it’s as low as possible and the angle between the tuner and nut is as steep as possible. Hope that makes sense! T

how does this bass compare (mostly sonically) to a Squire CV P/J 60s let's say?
Hi! I bought this bass this week and found that when I play both pickups or just the Jpickup the volum drops dramatically compared to when I play just the P pickup
Is this normal? I'm new to bass so I dont really know if it happens with this kind of basses

It might be that the J pickup is wired out of phase compared to the P pickup… I would go back to the shop and tell them that, or send it back and ask for another one if you bought online. It’s a simple job to switch the wires the other way for most stores/setup guys. T

Do you think a short scale bass can handle Eb tuning? They don’t sound too lifeless?
Tony M i don’t think it would be a problem. I’d maybe move up to a slightly thinner string say 105 from 100, but I don’t think it would be a problem at all, and certainly not lifeless. It’s not a semi-tone isn’t a huge difference in tension after all. T

Because I don't know much about basses, is this considered a presicion and a jazz bass together. How does this P/J bass thing works in general
This would be just defined as a Jaguar bass, but with the P/J pickup configuration. Typically the body shape defines the name of the bass. However there are pickups that have become synonymous with different types of basses hence their naming scheme. The pickup closest to the neck is most often found on precision basses (P) and the pickup closest to the bridge is most often found in a pair on Jazz basses (J). I hope that clears it up for you? @@panchaviaras2935 I think the p-bass is actually more present in the genres you've mentioned. Most punk bands use p- basses, or p/j basses. In metal they usually use active basses. Bands like the strokes on the other hand more often uses j basses. But you are not that much limited. You can play every genre with every bass, except maybe some heavier metal styles . I think these CV Jags are a good level better than the affinity from the ones I’ve played and seen. If you can, I would go for one of these! T

I replaced the jazz bridge pickup with a Dimarzio Area J bridge pickup. Fits nice, sounds about the same as the original Fender, but its a lot quieter. Worth $80? Maybe. Maybe not.
Mine weights 4,06 Kg (9 lbs) which seems a bit heavy for a nato body, or is that typical for a bass of that size?
I've wondered about the same thing. Mine's not a boat anchor, but it's heavier than I prefer.

Hi Stefan - I would say it’s smaller, but not by a lot. I think that lower bout is smaller than a jazz. I do find the Jaguars very comfortable! T

@@TylerSpicer well, I was looking at an older 34” VM Jaguar on eBay but looking at your review of the 34” (albeit the newer model with different pups and body wood) it really feels like the 32” is a better option.

You're aware though, that the fingerboard is rounded and not straight on a lot of Fender, as well?
Bapt and the Basses of course - what I’m referencing here is that some of the fingerboard edging I’ve seen is not well done. The CV 60s I played looked like someone had been at it with a small chisel, rather than having a smooth rounded edge. T

@@TylerSpicer well, I don’t really play yet; I mean I’ve just started lessons again after a 30 year break. Bought an Ibanez GIO GSR-200 on EBay literally two months ago. Neck is thin AFAIK but I find the body annoying sitting down and my lesson videos are all with teachers hold Jazz basses with a tortoiseshell pick guard which I love. When playing I tend to favour the P pickup over the J which I kind of dial in a bit. I find im drawn to 70s rock, 80s pop/rock, and soul/disco/funk. Given I like Queen and The Police, you’d think I’d go P Bass.... but the offset body.... 😩 oh and I have small hands - same size as my wife and wear small/medium gloves, so my little finger is killing me right now with trying to stretch over 4 frets.

@@TylerSpicer they are. Tried to raise the bridge pickup and all it did was wobble. Looks like whatever let’s them float is at it’s highest on mine. Pickups sound close-OSh in volume on mine so I put them back where they were (I think!).
The only thing you didn't mention is weight. Are these heavy basses?
G Middle Last I don’t tend to mention weight as it can vary so often from example to example due to the inconsistency of wood as a material. This particular one sits right around the 4kg mark - but tbh most Fender-style instruments seem to be that kind of weight, unless they’re chambered etc. T

Melipong Amri it’s unlikely I can get hold of Harley Benton as it’s a Thomann product and not stocked by the Guitar Centre. However, if that ever changes or I come across one at some point, I’ll definitely do a comparison! T

Good video and that's a nice looking bass. Could be shorter (the video, not the bass) and I can't help but be nitpicky and say tone is not on or off, there is not more tone or less tone, rather it favours treble or bass more.
