13:17 Where To Buy Fender Basses
In this bass guitar buying guide we compare four legendary Fender bass guitars, a bass shootout between the Precision Bass vs Jazz bass vs mustang bass vs jaguar bass, so if you were confused, hopefully this video can help you decide which is the right one for you.
For decades now, these guitars have been heard on countless recordings covering a huge range of musical genres, making them some of the best bass guitars for rock, jazz, indie, pop, funk, country and punk. They've inspired countless copies and imitations, but nothing beats a real Fender, so we'll be looking at some of their best bass guitars for professionals including the new American Professional II series Precision and Jazz basses, as well as some more affordable Player series models, some of the best cheap bass guitars that Fender produce out of their Mexico based factory.
We look at the differences between scale-lengths, long scale vs short scale, the body designs of each bass including offset vs non-offset, how the neck profiles differ between a P-Bass and Jazz bass, and give you a tone comparison between the split coil pickup of a Precision and the dual single coil pickups of a Jazz bass.
So take a look and listen here with PMTVUK, make sure to let us know you're favourites in the comments, and try the full range for yourself at your nearest Professional Music technology store...

Let's be honest, we like all of them.
The biggest surprise is how much I liked the tone of the Jaguar. Thanks for this.
I really like the playability of jazz bass, and the bridge pickup sound is very nice. Though p-bass neck pickup is a must! I just could not live without that sound. That's why this jaguar bass is just perfect. It connects those worlds together.
I know! I came here trying to get a better idea between the P & J, and was starting to feel like I understood them a bit better, but now I’m thinking the jag might actually be the one for me lol, crazy that it was the player series too.
Yea that thing sounds INCREDIBLE!!!
Small hands so that Mustang
looks & sounds real good.
Most all basses sound good by themselves with a little help from your amp . Play the bass in a band , then decide! SteveBaggett
THIS IS THE VIDEO THAT I HAVE NEEDED FOR YEARS!!!! PLEASE CREATE MORE! You are a very good host!
You've been on RUclips for years and this is the first video uv seen that does the fender bass comparison? There are literally thousands of them.
I like the looks of the Jag but the sound of the P bass is iconic!
The p remains undefeated
@@simonemezzacapo6544 the funny part of this is that I actually ended up buying a jag bass.
@@dingalsbe88 the worse the sound, the better the skills 🗿
@@dingalsbe88 Are you happy with it and what genre are you mainly focussing on?. I'm thinking of buying one.
@@corkandi I just use it to make some of the tunes in my youtube videos. Rock and Country. The fret dressing on it sucks... I really need to take it in to someone that can dress them up. They are pretty sharp. other than that, is makes the P bass and J bass sounds pretty well.
This is so well done, The explanations and order of info is so to the point and I didn’t get impatient the whole video. You guys edited this well. Rock on you crew, what’s with British stores having dope reviews, the British camera store has a good channel too. Proavtv, seriously, thanks.... saved me from watching 2 hours of comparison videos and always forgetting what a p bass sounds like. I seriously love that you went back to the p bass without changing it to compare the others at the end. Genius... maybe it’s because I might be a P bass fan... hold on, let me watch it again.
Mustang bass all the way! No question. It’s not just “easier to play” or “for beginners”. I feel like the mustang isn’t getting enough love in this video, especially with the PJ configuration.
I’d have sooner had a ‘real’ mustang bass here with a mustang pickup.
this is great except you undersold the shortscale`s merits! there's less overtones in a shortscale which can give you a thuddier tone, especially nice when using flat wounds. a lot of bassists who arent children favour a shorty, such as paul mccartney
SAME HERE!!!
Same!
Dude I’m 15 turning 16 tomorrow and just recently discovered the fact that mustangs were smaller , glad to see it holds its ground
Older guy here who prefers short scales
I'm really considering getting a Mustang to add to the arsenal, don't have a short scale. Thanks for the input.
I have researched this a TON and this is the ONLY video to give real world information. Great job!
Great stuff here. Thorough in informative.
I was waiting for a video like this for years. Thx!
love the depth in the jazz bass sound. and the jaguar has a wonderful clarity to it that's not overly bright
I've been waiting for a video like this, thanks guys...🙂
Our pleasure!
You’re welcome. I wrote the script and screenplay to this.
I absolutely love the way short scales feel, but they have that mid heavy squatty sound, which is perfect for jazz or blues, but I miss the tone of a clean full scale
been playing P and J basses before (and loved both) but been happily in love with my Jag for many years now
At last a decent video without all the clowning around ... very informative.. interested in the Mustang, currently have a slab P 51 style
the best review so far. im rooting for the Jaguar and it's really beneficial to have it compared to the most preferred ones. thanks! keep it up!
Played a ‘69 American Precision with black nylon strings thru Ovation amp, 200w 4. 15s for ten years. Loved it amazing tone and speed with that set up. This video explains a lot of the differences very well. Thank you.
As someone who has only been playing for 2 months (thanks to accidentally discovering Davie504), isn't friends with any musos and who is far too intimidated to go into a music shop, this video really answers a lot of the questions I have. Thank you.
Thank you for this video! My Jag Player Pau Ferro is on route, now!
Great video. Great detail. Exactly the kind of comparisons I was looking for. Thanks much. 🤘🏻🎸⭐⭐⭐⭐
i’m going for either the mustang or the j bass. i just love the tone and looks of the mustang, and the jazz has a really nice, tight sound to it.
Great video, thanks! I really like that Mustang!
Cool video. A few decades of playing, and working on, guitar and bass, and almost as many years building them. I've owned, and played, quite a few instruments, and personally enjoyed, of these, P basses and J basses most, but I've enjoyed several other builders instruments more, especially the basses I've built.
Excellent comparison - very informative - thanks
Came here just to hear the mustang and jaguar in action , learned so much ..... superb video
Really good video, thanks! I have this exact same mustang and all I can say is with nickel wound strings it doesn't sound half as bad as in this video. The stock strings sound a bit too metallic. I changed them 2 days after buying and now I'm happy with the sound.
What did you put on? I'm not a fan of stainless steel and have pure nickels on my P bass. Don't no whether to do the same with the PJ Mustang or put flats on.
@@jameshunt8373 I'd definitely go for flats personally. The thudddd!!
@@lev9161 I've just been trying out a set of cut down power slinky's on it. Gonna leave it a while before making my final decision. More than likely put chrome's on it.
absolutely excellent demonstration !
Thank you!! Awesome video and very useful
I play a player series P bass with a Fretless jazz bass neck. I love the simplicity and tone of the single pickup but also with the maneuverability and freedom of a Fretless jazz neck.
Great video! FWIW, I have an American P & J, plus the same P/J Mustang featured here. I've strung mine with Flatwounds, (what ALL bass strings once were) which moves the sound from the P & J pickups MUCH closer to that of the 34" P or J with Roundwounds (which were 'invented' to give them the 'brightness' already inherent in the Mustang). This video really demonstrated that. I have a Squire Jaguar Short Scale P/J with the same gauge Roundwounds and Fender USA P/J pickups as my Mustang, and the brightness really is as pronounced as the video demonstrates... great for 'cutting through' and especially great if you have a Hammond/Synth player (or sequencer!) who can use the pedals and cover the deep bass stuff. IMHO, YMMV, break-a-leg :-)
Thx for setting the camera angle so you’re not doing that weird thing all RUclips bass players do where they stare at you down the lens while playing their riffs
Great video thanks for actually explaining it!
Great video. I'm a guitarist and play several other Instruments. Been looking to get a first bass and didn't know exactly what I wanted to satisfy the sound in my head
Great video thanks. I'm leaning towards the jaguar - sound, looks & versatility. But will try in store before buying.
Thanks! Very Helpful Video!!
Great review
Always loved the Jag....I played a metallic pink flake one in Jax Beach about 10 years ago and was blown away by the tone and depth of bass. I own 2 now. One a Teal metallic Squire, and a black Fender (I also own several other brands-2 Ibanez Srs, and My Sterling Stingray, and the Jags are my favorite Squires/ Fenders.) I still think my Sringray is my favorite bass (Even if it is "only" an Indonesian Sterling...it still sounds better than my 2 Fenders.) My best sounding would be my Ibanez, but I just don't have as much fun on it like I used to...
have the pro II p bass in miami blue. love it and my choice :)
GREAT job, thank you!
Doing the Lord's work with a video like this.
Grest reviews and video man!
I have a Jazz bass and want the other three as well
During the Spring of 2000 I had my sites set on a Fender Deluxe Active J bass. At the same time, one of my local retailers had in his shop a Squier version of the Mustang demoed here. I might have gone with that one because of the shorter scale length and synonymous tonal variety, only the Fender brand was a little more enticing than Squier.
Great review!!!!
Idk why the Jazz Bass sounds very unique for me, I love the comparison and you have done a great job comparing the sounds of each basses. :D
It's the pickups. The single coil neck gives you a bright sound
Great easy comparison 👌👍👍
I’ve been dreaming about a fender P-bass since I started playing for a bit over 20 years ago but must say the mustang is appealing with it’s sound and shorter scale. Must go to the music shop and try one.
Perfect. This was such a a good video as I wanted to hear the jaguar compared to my jazz bass
Thanks for this. I've had my '76 Fender P forever (which I love) but have often wondered about trying something else. Would be good to see something like this comparing Fender with some other similar price range bases. It's like I"ve been with the same women for 40 years and want to try something just as good but different before I die. Any recommendations??! I'm thinking Jaguar out of the Fenders.
I've always thought I would be more into P bass based on the written descriptions in the magazines,
but well it turned out that I fell into Jaguar (and got more inclined to J bass) after trying out the models at the store loll
Thank you for a no nonsense, easy to understand video on the differences. I'm choosing which will be my first bass and this helped significantly. I thought the Precision and Jaguar sounded similar. I also thought the Jazz and the Mustang sounded similar. I liked the sound of the Jaguar although you point out the Mustang is just a little bit better when it comes to pickups. Well done.
Too tough to choose, so I’m sticking with my Fender Precision Special with the PJ pickup configuration, P bass body and J bass neck. Best of both worlds. Have to say that Mustang looked awesome though. Might have to get my hands on one of those.
It’s a good time to do a smash and grab!
Cracking review 👍
Good video It would have been nice if you compared these basses with the tone knobs set the same !!
Very informative video. I am a guitar player - looking to purchase a Short Scale Bass. I have had my eye on the G&L Fallout or the Fender Mustang? I play Everything from: Motown, Classic Rock, Reggae, Funk & Pop. Appreciate any input. oNe LovE from NYC
Great video, personally I'm torn between the jazz & p bass, the jazz does seem more versatile but the p has that unmistakable tone 🤔
I'm gonna have to try them side by side, great video tho
All good,I'd go for the jazz bass as my all rounder, and for its aesthetics over the other models.
great video
I love my Hot Rod Red Jaguar Bass from ~2006 (it’s got J-J pickups). It’s a shame the newer Jaguar Basses don’t have all the control options
Those older jags are the only bass with an active preamp I ever really warmed up to, and they're gorgeous to boot
Great Vid. You have some noises while playing lil buzzing at around @12:00 Mins mark. Is this common? because i also got these noises and im despaired if its normal or not :-D
I have an American J bass in surf green and love it, but I also love my Carvin P bass as well. My only complaint is when I start playing the Carvin only to find out that the batteries are dead…again.
I want to add a short scale, but didn’t like the tone of the one in your video. I’ll do more research.
They all sound good, but my favorites were the Mustang and Jazz.
I have got fender precision standard mim with V-mod pickup and sound monster
Good comparison video.
I'll take the JB thanks.
What are the different scale lengths? I think that I noticed one had a custom 30 inch even though the 'normal' length was 34 inch. I don't know if it had a custom neck or how this was accomplished.
This was the first ever bass comparison video I ever watched. 6 months later and I own both a Jazz and a Precision. Whichever one you get, you’ll agonise that you should have got the other until you have both. Having said that, flatwounds on the neck pick-up of the jazz sound so similar to the same strings on the Precision. I still love my P Bass but now I understand why people told me to get the J as my first bass. Like you can tell a tiny subtle difference but an audience member wouldn’t at all. It’s more like a subtle EQ difference. Slightly fuller and bassinet. Most of the sound is in the choice of strings. There are other differences though, the lack of pickup options on the P forces you to get on with actually playing and stop worrying about the knobs, or whether you should have bought a P.
I have the Mustang PJ. It's an awesome instrument! :)
They’re all so good. I love the jazz and have one, but looking for an excuse to buy another!
The Mustang PJ on flats is the nuts
For pj configuration, Would you recommend jaguar or mustang more? I don’t like that you have two separate volumes not blend for jaguar, but it seems that the short scale would cause the tone to be pretty different from the classic fender tone.
As a lefty and I have a MIM Player P Bass, but when I came into some money I bought an American P -Bass from the American Standard range and you notice how much lighter the bass is, how much more responsive the tone is and above all how it sounds and feels when you play without plugging in. If you feel it through the wood when you play it’s a good indicator of build quality. If you can afford it, it’s well worth going for the American Pro range. Honestly though the Player range is great under a budget and the maple neck is a first for me.
I had a MIM p-bass and hated how heavy it was which led me to sell it, but I have 3 mustang pj's and absolutely love them, they're supremely comfortable and the range of pickup options out there for upgrading allowed me to voice all 3 slightly different from each other
4:00 about bass strings: if one must put Rotosounds on their Fender(s), I recommend Jazz Bass 77 LDs for prepackaged sets. If one wants to do the preferable thing, one buys D'Addario single XL Chrome flatwounds, gauges .95, .75, .55, and .45.
And tuck some sort of string mute under the Precision's bridge!
I think the Jaguar is unquestionably the best looking bass. I'm strongly considering buying one of those Player models.
Did you get around to buying one?
@@lucaswallo8127 No actually, I got a VM Squier SS Jaguar though,, and a Player Precision
@@introscapes9418 Oh that's cool. What made you get the Precision?
@@lucaswallo8127 I don't really use the Jazz pickup in the bridge of my Squier, and I wanted wider string spacing.
Just found this video as one been doing some recent research. What kinda strings are you playing? Round or flat? I'm considering a mustang but it was quite bright to my ears and figure a set of flats could help that. Thanks.
Thanks for this, it's a really useful video. To my ears the Mustang has more audible "twang" of the strings mixed in with the bass notes than the others. Were they all recorded DI? Is that likely to be a characteristic of the Mustang's DI sound or could it be reduced by adjusting the set-up?
Saaaame
it's due to the shorter scale length. It literally sounds like a guitar on the higher strings. if you like the twang go for mustang if you want deeper bass go for the others
Put flats on the Mustang, and you'll get more of a Precision tone.
Hi...can i put bigger gauge on the short scale mustang pj than the 40-90 gauge? Thx
This is a very nice overview, and it would help me in my selection. I've had a P-Bass and J-Bass, but I recently bought a Squier Jaguar SS (short scale) bass, and I adore it and made it my primary bass. My J-Bass has been relegated to the BEAD-tuned role if I need a lower register. Of the four in this video, I would choose the Mustang, as I can't find any reason to go back to a 34" scale bass...plus it's the prettiest.
I'm considering the mustang because I have a really small studio and fear I would smash the headstock into one of my monitors but there is one thing that is putting me off. The mustang sounds really shallow and guitar like in comparison to the others. Is this any different in person ?
It could however be a good thing in a small room to minimise the boom effect.your thoughts are appreciated.
thanks
Just bought a jag. I love the tone. Hits me right in soul
Awesome!
The Best comparison ever
I'm thinking seriously about a short scale bass, and I've always loved the sound and feel of Fenders in general. My only slight gripe is that I would have liked to be able to blend the two pickups on the Mustang, like I can on my Jazz, rather than having the three way switch. Other than that it looks like a great bass.
It's fascinating how totally unique the Mustang sounds compared to the other three. The Jaguar on the other hand just sounds like it's phoning it in.
Yeah, I noticed that too, the least amount of character of the 4.
I like the jaguar and jazz bass
the mustang sounds great and is my favorite out of the basses you showcased
I didn't like the PJ tone as much as I thought I imagined. Precision bass and jazz bass sounded the best at what they were originally designed to do.
Great video. Overall I would say go with a P Bass. The reason here is the simplicity and the fact that most sound people are used to working with them. I started on a Jazz Bass and love those but feel wise I think the P Bass is a bit comfier. My cool Squire P Bass I have has an identity crisis. I have a purple flake model from the early 2000s and have upgraded it by upcyclying and getting the best parts for the cheapest price. All said and done it is between $250-$300. I bought used Duncan Designed pickups, a Fender Hi Mass bridge, upgraded the electronics, bought a cool spade neck plate from Icon Plates, threw on a thumb rest over the P pickup and got new knobs and a gold/copper (depends on the angle) perloid pickguard. Throw on that some DR flatwounds...the tone I get is interesting. I mainly wanted more of a Motown sound but even with the flatwounds she growls. She is both mellow and surprisingly punchy for flat wounds.
The reason I say this bass has an identity crisis is that the headstock says its a Precision Bass but the neck is a straight up Jazz Bass neck. Also it has the P/J pickups set. Interestingly the DD pickups came out of a much newer Jaguar Bass but I had to do quite a bit of wood work with a file to get the new pickup to fit in the jazz pickup slot. So this bass really is an ideal inbetween. Of course the body is a Precision body.
I love the look of the Jaguar Bass but right now a P Bass feels like home to me. While I am mainly a guitar player I would especially recommend the Mustang Bass as a "one and done" purchase for a guitar player who is looking for a bass but does not really want to become a bass player. Also more petite players or smaller handed players. A guitar player will find the Mustang feels more like a baritone guitar feel wise.
Thaks for the detailed insight! -Lee

You bet buddy! Love your content!
I wonder if the shorter string lengths on the Mustang cause the sound quality to suffer. (More string, better sound?)
Bonjour, ces 4 basses ont-elles les mêmes cordes ? Et le même réglage ?
How these Basses sound in a live Band is the important thing ! Some cut through the mix better than others ! SteveBaggett
That's for sure, a Jazz punches through the most, the P can get lost in the mix the easiest, at least has been my experience. Of course speaker cabs play into that as well. I run a PJ Precision through a 15", hard to hear on stage, but I usually get compliments on my sound.
I started out with a P Bass. Just bought a J Bass but it hasn't been delivered yet so cannot tell you which is my favourite.
How do you like the J bass compared to the P bass?
@@dustinglass lmao legend
Now tempted by a mustang !! Thanks 🙏
I bought the Jaguar. Tried the P bass but didn't like the tree trunk neck. Tried the J bass and liked the neck but didn't like that it couldn't produce a good P bass sound. The Jaguar has a great neck and actually sounds like a P bass with the jazz pickup turned off. Winner!
I'd been wondering about the terms.. Looks like my toby is a jazz bass then.. Nice.
With the Jaguar bass, you probably don't have to choose between the p-bass and the Jazz bass.
Really interesting--the Jaguar tonally doesn't sound like it does "either" the Jazz and the Precision sound with the pickup selection but always sounds like some sort of combination between the two.
It probably has something to do with the neck as well. It has a slimmer neck similar to jazz bass. So my theory is that it's not only how it feels, but also how it sounds acoustically.
The neck can affect the tone quite a bit, so can the electronics or the holes the body has. It makes them quite unique, really, they’re not just P and J’s mix, but a whole different thing on their own.
Is that good or bad
P bas sound by far the best, but would love it in the Mustang body ;-)
My fifty years old P bass is still my favorite.
I’m at 4:04. Asking this now before I forget. So the mustang is only for kids and starters?
Can't wait to get my hands on a mustang
The jazz sounds fantastic through my iems
They all would sound great, with ghs flatwounds on them.
also, is the jaguar bass just brighter?
