I'm not mad...I'm just disappointed.
I sound like my father.
Please do a squier vintage classic vibe 70s precision bass review. Thanks! 🙏🏻
Yo Patrick, what your opinion on Rogue basses? Would love it if you did a review of those coming from a guy like you.
Hi Pat, a question for you: have you ever tried the Squier Vintage Modified take on the Mustang? I have a black mustang of that series, it came with Duncan Designed mini split coil pickup (so no P-J solution, but the classic mustang way instead) and I think it sounds great. Plus, this series was WAAAAAY less expensive than this new Classic Vibe one (mine was a b-stock from Thomann and I had it for less than 200€, insane!!!)... so, just wondering: have you ever had the chance to play one?
Could we see a paranormal jazz bass on the channel ?
@Undercoverbus all the reviews I saw on youtube were positive. Or at least the first results that came up. I have one and I think it's great for what it is. I've bended the g string I hardest I could and it was still in tune. I've also pre-bended the hardest I could and it's was still in tune.
When you started playing I was like "shit I need that bass now" and then you were like "this bass is shit" lmfao
Lmao I’m on the starting phase and def considering buying 😂 would you recommend something else for a beginner who likes blu detiger kinda style?
I don't know about you. But i like this bass tone
I think the tones ok but absolutely hate the looks of one.
Yup
This bass, in the hands of this player, has a great retro timbre; lot of lo-fi character. Sounds awesome. I don't understand what he doesn't like about the pickups.
I'm not alone! I really hate the "everything's $400" pricing model for the CVs, and the QC is all over the place! Great vid Patrick
Things must have really changed when they changed from the China factory to the Indonesian one. The old Chinese CV basses from the early 2010's are great, but I've heard nothing but disappointment from the new ones. I was thinking of off loading my Jazz, but based on the reviews I've been seeing, I might hang onto it for a while.
@@ampthebassplayer The Paranormal line from the China factory is also really nice. The pickups aren't noisy, but lack a little character... but the build quality and QC is much tighter compared to the Indo-CVs at the same price. Given how much competition there is at the $400ish price point now, Squier better watch out.
@@LowEndLobster Agreed. They had a nice corner on the market 10 years ago, but there are so many viable options at that price point.
@@ampthebassplayer squier has actually improved a whole lot in my opinion, at least they’re playable albeit with a few issues that aren’t major and can be fixed easily
@@mcbrodz1663 Not really, the old Chinese CV's were plenty playable (I have a 2012 CV p bass and the neck plays like butter) and had better hardware and QC than the new ones...so the quality has decreased in the last few years.
Sounds freaking great in this video. If it requires the tone knob set at 75% to sound so great, so what, the result is amazingly cool sounding.
Right? That's what the tone knob is there for. Adjust that to your taste- or tweak your EQ a little to compensate. This bass sounds great.
Agreed.
I don’t understand your high expectation. For $400 it’s a fine bass. I’ve played a couple in music stores and was very impressed by their construction, sound and value. I could gig with one of these tomorrow without any mods.
I love this bass so much. I love its sound and how it plays with La Bella flats on. I seem to be the minority in this opinion from most of the reviews I’ve seen.
I totally agree with you.
im with you. got mine in white and its been fantastic to me. might still replace the pickup with a Nordstrand mustang tho.
@@alejandrolara-agraz7356 Let us know if you do. Looked everywhere for a comparison of the stock vs nordy but couldn't find one anywhere!
@@marcusparnell2403 have not yet, havent been gigging so that would be my litmus test for deciding whether or not to replace it
What scale and gauge are your La Bella flats?
I went to see a band in quite a big venue recently. The female bassist was playing this bass!! It sounded brilliant. Really carried the band tbh.
Bcnr?
Margaritas podridas
@@yukoandhiro425 Tyler plays a p-bass most of the time
My initial impression with hearing it was “Wow... that pickup is so weak.” So I’m glad it’s not just me haha. I used to have a MIJ Mustang and the pickup made it sound close to a P, so this is disappointing
The MIJ Mustang was one of the best basses I ever had. Giving that up is one of my biggest regrets.
@@audibletapehiss3764 Went into Long and Mcquade and saw a Fender Mustang Bass Short Scale. It was selling for $899.00 Canadian ($690 USD) It's has a PJ configuration. It had a switch on it to switch off the P-bass and play the J pickup. The Squier Mustang Bass (although made by Fender) in the video does not sound good. The Fender Mustang Short Scale Bass I saw sounded real sweet!
@@susiemuirhead561 I own a 2016 Fender Mustang Bass with the PJ configuration. I agree, it is a great bass. I was lucky enough to find one that still came with a rosewood fretboard. The newer Pau Ferro and Indian Laurel just don't do it for me. I usually play it with just the p bass pickup and I'm glad there is a toggle switch for this function. I have yet to put flatwounds on it but I imagine it would sound good.
Just go out and buy one of the sire bass models and you won't be disappointed. Trust me on this.
have one in my hands right now. What a great instrument.
your playing makes my heart tingle
This is a completely giggable instrument. Easy and fun to play, with a very slim neck and a perfectly adequate sound for almost every kind of pop/rock music. For a cheaper bass it actually has an unusually wide tonal range, and no-one is forced to play it only on the brightest setting. There are plenty of other options, especially if one installs one of the more versatile sets of flatwounds, like Fenders (stock on Fender's own JMJ Mustang bass).
I have a JMJ Mustang and it’s incredible, and has a huge sound.
Nice review! I've been debating on grabbing one of these or getting a bronco and upgrading. Love the honesty on the pickups
Love the colour! Sounds good! Thinking of getting one.
The pickup sounds pretty good to my ear. In fact I’ve seen a few videos where a fender stock pickup has been replaced with a Nordstrand NM4 with virtually no discernible difference in tone. What would be really useful is if you could do the same with this bass and let us hear both the stock and the NM4 back to back to see if it really is as bad as you say.
The thing about squire basses for me is that they just feel amazing. Neck always feels like it should be on a $700 guitar. Worth it if you plan on swapping pickups anyways. Also the finish is sexy.
Amen, brother. The "newer" Squiers certainly are a far cry from the earlier Indonesed Squiers.
Yep. I have a couple of Squiers and the necks are really great - sort of "invisible" because you don't notice them when you're playing. They do exactly what they're supposed to do and don't intrude on you or make you wish they were better.
Your spot on with it sounding tinny and I think flats will do it a world of good too.
I like the bass still, It's pickups sound great to me through an ampeg and with a pick (I'm a king gizzard fan girl) with plenty of grunt for me. I like to play around with the tone on them a bit, at one hundred they sound fine but i agree, they sound better when turned down a bit more. Also, would love you to play one of the bronco's, most people think they are horrible, and they probably are however, I love the sound anyways!
Actually, to my ears, this bass sounds better than some of the reviews on RUclips I've seen of $5000 boutique basses. That could be the player, but there are a lot of really high priced basses out there that sound like crap. And others that sound killer. But for the cheap price tag on this Mustang, it sounds pretty damned good. It's not meant to sound like a Fodera. Obviously.
As for Mustangs, I think the Fender American Performer Mustang nails it--super versatile with the extra J-pickup and the pickups are voiced to give a more "modern tone." I think that bass sounds every bit as good as the standard scale Fender J's and P's. But, as for this Squier Mustang... I'd rock it. Sounds gigable to me. But then I don't do death metal. Mainly classic rock and soul. You know... dinosaur stuff?
The pick tone on this bass is awesome!!! I wasn't crazy about the finger tones compared to the pick tone.
If you’re looking for a Mustang, for about $600 you can get a Fender Mustang with a PJ pickup combo and higher quality materials.
I saw a Player Series Mustang PJ on Dave’s Guitar Shop (Reverb) that sold for $395. Insane. I shoulda nabbed that.
The PJ Mustang might have a slightly better neck and body composition, but that toggle switch and the bridge are terrible and broke on me in the first year.
As a general rule of thumb, I'd usually recommend a CV Squier over a Fender Player Series for any of their basses or guitars.
They are most likely coming on the same east-Asian factory floor, but one offering a step up in parts quality while the other is offering the Fender brand decal without saying "Squier" on it. But it sounds like in this case you might be right.
@@twincitiestara I agree, but it’ll be a stronger argument if the CV in this case is the first-run made in China. The new CV is a hit-and-miss in terms of QC.
@@twincitiestara you know what? I think the quality of the player series stuff has gone down. I have an older MIM P bass that feels way better then the player series jazz I got. The older MIM has better tuners and no sharp fret ends like the player series had.
Patrick! Greetings from Argentina! Those short scale mustang basses was made exclusive for play with flatwound strings and always using pick, to sound like indie bands: roosevelt, tame impala, etc.
I bought a Fender Player Series PJ Mustang Bass at the beginning of 2020.
It's Sweet. 💕💕🎵🎸
Man you've always played well but you've also really improved. Keep it up
Patrick "King of Camera Angles" Hunter 🔥
I was going to buy this, but recently thinking about getting the Fender Mustang instead. My mind is now made up!
I sold my PJ mustang for a vintera literally today, can’t recommend the latter over the former enough. A decent PJ can be had for $200, whereas there aren’t really substitutes for a TRUE fender mustang bass pickup. Modding one of these into a musicmaster though? That might be a project
@@USSLIBERTYREMEMBERER yeah I'm going for the Player series PJ methinks! Thanks for the insight! 😊
Totally agree with your assessment on the pickup. Very mid-forward, I would say. I had trouble finding one that didn't have QC issues with the neck joint or other cosmetic problems. I was highly-anticipating this bass and was super let-down. After returning a couple to chain stores, I eventually bit the bullet and went with a JMJ signature, which ships with flats and plays and sounds great, as it should, lol.
I've never had a Fender, so this sounds good to me. I currently play on a Squier Vintage Modified Jaguar. Shirt scale with a PJ configuration.
Me too, which is why I won't need to buy a Mustang. I've tried both, and they're both good, but the Jaguar SS is more comfortable.
But if I had to choose alternative replacement, it would be a Mustang or Sire U5.
Sorry, I completely disagree! I own 2 vintage Fender Mustang basses but for me the Squier is a very usable, good playing and sounding instrument! Flats are of course a must and I agree that you have to turn down the highs a little bit, which I see no problem at. For me the Squier has a classic look and feel that you will not find elsewhere for the money...
Do you recommend this bass for a beginner? I play the keys and am looking to get into bass playing. Was thinking about getting this as my first bass. I kinda like the sound of it actually.
Absolutely. Once it‘s set up properly, it‘s very easy to play and sounds really good! But you need to put some flats on, like the LaBella MUS set. But that’s just my opinion!
@@olliesound67 Cool thank you for the advice!
I just got one of these in the mail and will be reviewing it too. The most common thing I’ve heard is the QC issues
what short scale bass could you recommend me? i was considering this, the jaguar, or the tmb30 or gretsch 2220
I would guess maybe your expectations were too high. There are some pretty good mustang pickups out there for not a lot of money that I'd be willing to buy and slap on it. Glad to hear that the neck feels so good and that it has a bone nut and string through body too. And yes I would throw some Diadarro chrome flatwounds on as well plus sand the back of the neck down too
I agree. The tint on the maple of the neck and headstock is sweet too. The Nordstrand Mustang pickups look like a good choice. Plus it’s always fun swapping out pickups!
Why would you sound the neck down ?
@@jaxonvictoria4345 exactly , the entire price to what you get is AMAZING
To give it a faster feel compared to a lacquered neck. That's just preferance. I plan to leave the lacquer on mine because I'll need something to slow me down.
Does anyone know if standard short scale strings will fit (this being a string-thru) or if medium scale strings are needed? Thanks
I picked up a Fender Mustang 2 years ago and it never felt right either.. I have had it set up 3 times and the playability is still off. I really like the bas but don't know what to do
I brought one of those beautiful machines last week ,after over a year of lusting for it. Its very very very good. The search is over .
Killer video! I have an early 2000`s Squire re-issue Mustang. LOVE,LOVE,LOVE it!! Fit/finish is top notch and everything about this shorty is great. Can`t go wrong for ca. $240 delivered.
Great reviews mate 💥
Thanks a lot for the demo
I own the Squier Mikey Way Signature Mustang
$300 when it came out.
Love it.
Swapped the pickup to a passive EMG tho.
I've been through tooooooo many basses through the years. This bass is about as good as any I've ever played. Not sure why the negative thoughts in this review.
I have a fender mustang,p.j. combo which cost me more than 400 bucks, right now is all factory and good sounding to me. I may do some upgrades on it.agulair pickup, Ernie ball flat wounds and a tone monster just to make it better. What do think about that?
I just spent a few minutes going back and forth between some sound sections in this video and your demo of the JMJ Mustang that you really enjoyed. Honestly in most of the sections, especially ones where you use the pick, I liked the sound of the CV as much or more. You probably didn't have the gear and recording setup exactly the same in the two videos, so maybe some of that is set up differently in this demo to compensate for what you describe as the lacklustre sound of the CV, but I'm thinking if the tone issues are something that you easily managed to fix and make sound that good with some simple adjustments of the tone knob, or amp EQ, then that's really not a big deal, especially considering the CV is half the price of the JMJ. Thanks for the great demos! :)
I looked at one of these basses the other day and was incredibly impressed by the feel/craftsmanship. I have a CIJ mustang bass and it felt pretty similar to mine. The neck felt really nice and not like other Squires I tried. When I buy an import guitar I always expect to replace all electronics. I think I’ll get one of these for my kids to learn on and upgrade it along the way. Again, really impressed by the quality/feel of this bass.
i love this bass shape and scale!
I think you hit the nail on the head with the pickup. The Classic Vibe series, for me, is a perfect molding platform. My CV Jazzmaster has good pickups in it and is miles better sounding than factory. But solid body and neck. I'd imagine this is the same.
Thanks for another great video, I was just looking at that bass literally yesterday. I think I'm going with the new Schecter Banshee. Would love to see you review that one.
Do you think they may not have wrapped much wire around the pickup ? just curious.
What would be a better short scale equivalent at that price range or lower?
What do you think of the Hofner 300-400 dollar range basses? Any budget short scale basses you absolutely love?
If I didn’t already have enough electric basses and about to get another, I would almost find this model tempting. What’s missing is, an instrument like this should really have the bridge pickup also. Late in the 90s, I played another bass that was very similar to this (with the bridge pickup) at my local retailer, and the only hold up was the Squier name.
@patrick hunter, great video. Can this bass be upgraded to the Seymour Duncan high-fidelity pickups that come stock on their American model? I love the look & vintage vibe of the Vintera 60s bass but don't want to drop over 1k at this time. What upgrades can be done to make this better that won't break the bank? Thanks in advance
Someone pls help me, should I get this mustang classic vibe or the ibanez tmb30
Do you know how the Squier does compare to the Fender Vintera Mustang?
It's sounds good, i'm curious of what you have done to the bridge pickup because my DG strings are too quiet and are completly lost in the mix, so i never use them since 3 years. Completly not usable and it's on all the squier mustang bass i tried.
What exercises would you recommend to get better at using a pick? Keep up the good work.
That opening groove is sweet. Pickup does seem to lack "oomph." Great vid, dude.
I think it sounds great but its hard to tell how much of that could be attributed to the Darkglass head or any other sound processing that is happening. Its fair to assume that a Nordstrand replacement pickup would have that stang screamin'!
Picking one up today for 300. Will play live, all original. I'll see see after if swapping the pick ups is a must. Great video. 👍🏽
I agree, the first thing I noticed is how week it sounded. Can anybody tell me if you threw a fender pj plate you could fit some split P's on it? If it plays good, the sound could potentially be fixed, only the pickups & bridge worry me, maybe the tuners, but a bone nut is a definite plus.
I played one of these in flats that was the smoothest, buttery thing I could want. Played, felt, and sounded as good if not better than the JMJ.
To my ears, Mustangs basses doesn’t sounds the best with roundwounds. It’s a vintage thing :-)
IMHO if it costs 400 it’s probably because of the real bone nut that you can only expect on high ends basses and guitars
Hi. This bass acepts just the short scale strings or the standard long ones too ? Thanks
Ah I don't know, I love mine and thought the pick-up was fine. It's a short scale Mustang, it only kinda does 2 tones, they're not exactly famous for being versatile instruments. It does the Talking Heads vibe perfectly, can't say I'd bother changing pickups.
Own a JMJ Mustang Bass. Although not as loud as a Precision Bass the bass is still a powerhouse! Works great with flatwound strings.
Hey Patrick! have you thought to tried the Justin Medal Jensen Mustang Bass? I would love to hear your opinion on that bass.
To get a better sound, what would you do to make it sound better? Pickups? Tone and volume pots? What type would you get if you changed these items ???
i bought one of these in February and i love it but i agree the pickup is pretty weak. it plays so nice tho and thats such an easy fix
Pickup on mine is veery low output, I don't know if it's a thing with Mustang basses in general. I gotta give it quite some more gain than I do with my other basses.
Good candidate for a pickup upgrade? Norstrand, Lollar?
I owned an original 60's Mustang bass. I tried different strings and even changed the pickup to a Dimarzio model P, and could never get along with it.
I've had my Squier CV '64 Precision for 10 years, and at first it was a great bass. Over the years, though, I had problems with the neck - it would literally flex while playing with it, causing the notes on the first fret to fret out and for the whole bass to keep slipping out of tune. I thought it was the bridge or tuners, so I kept replacing them with others. Ultimately the truss rod went, and it would turn into a ski jump again a half hour after getting the neck straight. I wound up replacing it with a brand new Fender MIM Standard Precision neck, and the problems went away. At least Fender has this line at vintage specs, so just about any Fender replacement part is a drop-in (though for standard-sized pots you'll need to route out the control cavity).
The Seymour Duncan Mustang bass pickups might be right up your alley, but maybe also try out a Fender Mustang and see if the pickups on that are more to your liking.
I had the American Player version and it was also a total bust. I tried to make it work for what I do and the music I played but it just didnt have the punch
Need to ask, what is that riff that he plays at 5:24? Sounds like a ton of bricks! Where can I find it?
Thanks
Hello, what is your top three affordable short scale basses?
Do you prefer this or the classic vibes Jaguar bass?
so what is your better options for that price point
I’ve always heard Nato compared to Basswood.
I tried to buy a Classic Vibe Jaguar, same price point, I got two with major defects. After the second return, I gave up on my dream of owning a Jaguar. It is unfortunate, because I would have otherwise considered this bass.
I put a cheap Amazon copy of an original ‘57 P-bass pickup in a Bronco bass, and it sounds exactly as this pickup is described. I like it when I roll off the tone, like this Mustang pickup. I really like it with the tone on full with fuzz, for a lo-fi garage tone.
What fuzz are you using at 5:24???
E GADD, I think this is the first demo i'm seeing of yours where it isn't overwhelmingly positive! (not a criticism, I love your content) I agree regarding the price. A few years ago I never would have thought Squier's would be in the realm that MIM Fender's used to be in.. I probably sound like a boomer living in the past, at least price wise..
What is everyone’s take on the JMJ mustang model? That and has anyone tried those new G&L fallout short scale Basses?
I got a JMJ just within the past month and really dig it. Played it out for the first time this weekend and got great feedback on the sound. Sorry I hadn't gotten it sooner. I came across the shortscale Fallout while researching but have never laid hands on one, though I do own a Fallout Tribute 6-string, which is a solid import with American electronics.
It's the pick-ups!!! The same pick-ups are on the American Performer Mustang Bass. I have one and I'm switching the pick-ups out for a set of Seymour Duncan JMJs. Fingers crossed that it sounds comes out with real character after the switch
Sounds great for the price through my speakers.... I have the mex pj mustang, and I like the sound of this squire better. The selector switch on my mex went bad two weeks after I got it, I should have paid 400 for this instead of 700 for the mex.......
My dream mustang bass would have Billy Sheehan pickups on it personally. I think it would benefit from a proper pbass pickup and a neck humbucker. Regular mustangs have a good tone for post punk stuff where maybe your playing melodies and using chorus with it. But I use a bass vi for those tones.
ive played some of the classic vibe series guitar before and they are pretty amazing in my opinion. i think its okay for you to disapointed bcs this line up suposedly the top tier line up of all of squire product.
Can you give me examples of better options?
You might want to consider dropping in a Nordstrand NM-4 Mustang pickup and see if that fixes the missing lows.
I bought one in 2015 at Thomann, it was not "classic vibe" but just the same, except brighter neck colour, all black with maple fretboard, less than 300 euros brand new, very nice.
Dude this thing sounds fucking rad with some fuzz/distortion!
Would you recommend it for loud punk rock?
If Fender were ever like “HEY DYLAN(I’m Dylan) WE WANNA LET YOU DESIGN A BASS!” It would be a 32 inch Mustang with the 22 fret neck from the T Bucket acoustic bass. Medium scale basses with 22-24 frets are so perfect for scratching whatever Les Claypool itches you might have.
I'm not much of a bass guy, but I really enjoyed your playing. 👍
Also... A big 👍 for the sweatshirt. 😁
I have the same bass and it rocks!!!
Could you tell about these "better options",for a decent, economical, short scale bass?
Thanks...
You there ??
And Patrick, you probably got a model that was checked and fixed because of who you are. The one that I played in a local shop had sharp frets and an incredibly high nut. If you fix everything that needs fixing on this bass, you are well out of the Squier price range and could get a Fender Mustang PJ or a Sterling shortscale. Or save some bucks with a Sire U5. I really hope you do a demo of that one too.
Also, thanks for giving an honest opinion about basses! It probably is a risky decision from a business standpoint, so kudos to you for choosing credibility.
could you plz plz 🙏 do a review on the AMT WH-1B Bass Wah Wah?
Your right the neck is were it's at. I took the neck off and put it on a p.j. fender mustang body and it is so versatile now. P.s. I also sanded the neck down a bit and it is just right now.
What kind of distortion did you used?
I have one. Plays and sounds great.
i scored one for $314 and with the prices for even squier vista musicmasters now i think thats worth it. the pickups have a bit of hum and thats my only beef with it. this think rips with distortion and fuzz. the pickups have a very distinct character that i really love. i luckily dont have the dead E string issue that lowend lobster seemed to have.
Yeah it actually isn't just specifically this bass. Mustang pickups specifically have been known to be lacking tone-wise because of how small the split pickups are. This is why Fender has been putting out these Mustangs with P-Pickups because in this case, size matters.
Are you using flatwounds on it in this video?
